  1. What's an elite referee like Grinfeld doing in the conference league round of 16?

    1. Well, he didn't have any CL or EL group stage matches this season, so it would be a bit weird, if he would be used in the KO stage of those competitions.

    2. We saw Elite referees in previous rounds as well in this competition, committee uses the opportunity to appoint referees who hadn't, for different reasons, a positive season so far.

    3. Orel was injured, so it is a good opportunity for him to come back

  2. Second straight game for Peljto and now with Rosetti.

  3. Wow, Frankowski appointed after the missed handball goal in the Qarabağ FK - Olympique de Marseille game. That was excellent that the player admitted he scored with hand but the big mistakes stays as that. I didn't expect another appointment so quickly.

    1. Indeed I fully agree with you, the mistake is huge and in normal conditions, without VAR, should have cost the rest of the season.
It is absolutely particular to see the Polish again, we are talking about a mistake like "La Mano De Dios", but my opinion is that committe "used" the confession of the player and the fact that this goal was not important for the final qualification. Most of referees would have ended their season after that: Rosetti has different ideas, but I think that maybe they are starting to think with VAR being part of nowadays refereeing, if you understand what I mean.

    2. In last WC, there was a game where the commentator a high official in US soccer said in referring to the referee's performance, I paraphrase " that's the reason VAR is here".

  4. Referee Liaison officers, like in CL and EL?

    2. yeah, also for youth league (national FO is also RLO) and for womens' games with RLO appointed by national home federation.

So that, no club in charge of refs.

  5. A greek observer (former Cat. 2) to an English referee?

    Really?

  6. Another incredible kit, this time by Treimanis. Even worse than Kavanagh one :D

    2. Slavia Praha's kit is problematic. It has both light blue and red, if the other team plays in black, as referee you are in trouble.

  7. Absolutely wrong second yc by Raczkowski. Normal foul play, without no attempt at all to foul the attacker,no spa.

    1. I think he assessed a reckless challeng there, from behind directly on opponent, but the replay shows that it was no more than careless, no SPA I agree with you.

      Delete
    2. I think, it was given for SPA, because this type of challenge often is a SPA (running behind the opponent and slightly tripping him to prevent his progress).
However in this situation, there are too many defenders behind the ball, so not really a promising attack.

    3. Agree with above. Also possible missed penalty in the last minutes.

  8. Penalty by Peljto and after the whistle a very strong body language against players who were protesting. I would say maybe a bit aggressive, but no problems, I can accept that, he was very sure.
The call was for a quite reckless challenge, with a raised leg hitting opponent close to head, absolutely justified, even though the contact was not full but this doesn't matter, still dangerous. Referee considered it as careless, I think in this case a YC could have been appropriate to justify the nature of the call.

    1. Clear penalty and I can support no card decision. Peljto is well known for body language.

    2. Unluckily, I couldn't find videos as for now.
I can add, I think 2-1 scored by Basel maybe extremely tight offside (AR1), but difficult without VAR.

      Delete
    3. AR1 is not part of standard Peljto crew. Ibrisimbegovic and Beljo are best one and this was Lazic.

      Delete
    4. So what about that Lazic is not part of standard Peljto crew? He often goes with him. Lazic is better AR than Beljo and Ibrisimbegovic. Look how many decisions he had tonight, everything happened on his side. For 2-1 goal, you know the rule, in this situations you give advantage to attacking player.

  9. Big mistake by Dabanovic in Norway… in 90’ minute a completely wrong penalty call in favor of the home team, which costs AZ a draw. A perfect tackle playing the ball.

    1. This was a vey clear fair tackle. Penalty is very difficult to accept as mistake and decisive for final score. Sorry for Dabanovic!

    2. Big mistake by Dabanovic, wrong penalty.
Also at the first goal is a funny situation. He opened his arms to say no handball and with his arm hits a player and lost the whistle, while searching for the whistle Bodo scored. Never seen something like that in my life

    1. Thanks for all the clips! I've seen the whole match. The tackle of minute 70 was preceded by an incident at minute 68:48. The Roma player was still irritated about that. Personally, a major point of irritation from me was the asking for cards started from minute 1 by Roma players were not acted upon by the referee. Much stricter action should have been taken against this unsportive conduct.

Curious about your opinions about the 90+3 incident?

      Delete
    2. A matter of interpretation, for sure. In my opinion we can have two very different views, the decision taken by the Polish is because Roma defender touched ball before, but this, as we know, very often can't be a criterion. I will answer based on VAR intervention, not present in this game, but in this incident VAR should have supported all choices. You can say that the action by defender was reckless after having played the ball, so a penalty would have been justified.
My personal view in this case is that having touched ball before can't exonerate from responsibility defender like other cases, so i would have liked more a penalty, but nothing black and white.

    3. What is everyone's thoughts on 78' as a caution? I don't see reckless. And for SPA, well, where exactly is the player going? He's before midfield and is about to encounter a line of 3 Roma defenders. It feels like this is one of those situations where some referees reflexively go yellow because the foul is from behind. But, based on how SPA criteria is enumerated, is this actually a caution?

    4. Sorry!!! Just seeing now this was already discussed earlier.

    2. Further incidents:

35' - Possible YC - No foul whistled, then offside
      https://streamable.com/sa2bsh

      39' - Warning
      https://streamable.com/wi1ja7

43' - YC for reckless challenge and reaction by player, management
      https://streamable.com/zhhelg

74' - Missed YC - Clear and obvious mistake
      https://streamable.com/wrdkgx

82' - YC - Broadcaster missed the incident live, I think, I couldn't understand more, looks soft, but we can say nothing.
      https://streamable.com/77jvxb

90'+2 - Possible RC for SFP or even violent conduct. YC for SPA / reckless given, the minimum... in my opinion VAR should have intervened in a game with technology, player is aware he can't reach ball and he deliberately fouls opponent from behind, extremely dangerous tackle.
      https://streamable.com/pjwc05

Apart from the penalty call, I must say that in some situations I'm not convinced by Peljto, one clear mistake (74') and strong arguments for a straight card (90'+2). Rather passive approach to player's protests in 43', but this one, without other particular incidents, wouldn't have been a problem.

      Delete
    3. To be honest, I'm a bit shocked by the YC given for 90+2.
That's a textbook example of a clear RC which should also be an easy call to make on the field: From behind, with force, zero chance to reach the ball. No replays needed.

      Delete
    4. That is absolute nonsense!the point of contact is with the shin, no arguments for clear red. just that the movenent is from behind - this isn't enough for a RC

      Delete
    5. For me, 92' is an absolutely clear SFP offence. The player has no chance to reach the ball; he desperately runs full-spead across the field just in order to dangerously foul the attacker. The exact contact is not the main factor to argue with when assessing this type of RC offences. In a game with VAR technology, I would have liked an intervention.
