  1. Possible delay in adding the referees, I apologize for that, meanwhile here for you the observers!

  2. Taylor with Italian team and PSG is way toooo predictable. Not a good signal that especially Italian teams and PSG are treated in a different way than for instance German teams (less experienced referees).

Kwiatkowski (POL), Brisard (FRA), van Boekel (NED) and Dingert (GER) are AVAR on Tuesday, which means we can see Marciniak, Turpin and Makkelie on Wednesday.

  3. Kovacs is back, he will handle the game in Zagreb, Valeri is VAR, Hațegan AVAR.

Taylor in Paris. Worth to mention that he has German VARs, looks like indeed the English VARs are not trusted anymore with big clashes.

Good appointments for Massa in Sevilla and Pinheiro in Leipzig!

Also, I am surprised to see that Pol van Boekel is only AVAR.

    1. Refer to my comment 10:20. I think we will see the AVAR’s as head VAR on Wednesday :)

    2. Very interesting Kovacs is back after the mistake he did in Bulgaria.

  4. Looks like UEFA will use the more experienced VAR officials, regardless of country, which is good.
May well see them used twice each match week

    1. Blech. An Italian who hasnt shown anything yet at european level is rewarded with a top clash. A safe option for PSG instead of the only best option possible to stay credible (Makkelie). Choices of a coward by Rosetti. But that has become predictable.

    2. There are more referees out there MR Makkelie some think he is the only Uefa have to do games

    3. in Italy they say "they fucked you and didn't they pay you?". It seems that this is the relationship you have with the Italians. You are also offensive.

  5. Can someone confirm, what is the role of AVAR?
How much is he/she involved or needed?
    Always curious of this.

Thanks in anticipation of the answers.

    1. It's like an assistant on the field. The VAR will be checking something and the AVAR will be keeping an eye on what's going on the field while the VAR does the check. Or the other way around.

  6. Welcome back to Hategan in European competitions, and the same for Kovacs after the troubles in preliminary rounds.
Champions League debut for Pinheiro under the eyes of Velasco, this is the highlight of the first set of assignments. Big plans for the Portuguese, at the same time we can say that Verissimo seems to have been "abandoned" by committee, after some attempts.
To follow, Taylor for the hot clash in Paris, absolutely more than predictable name and one could say if committee wanted to change the trend, they could have appointed Oliver for Juventus.. but indeed this is not possible because in case of controversial situations and with WC waiting in a short time, this would only create troubles to Oliver. Also, in big games no English VAR for English referees, and that's a very interesting thing, the appointment for Play Off with English VAR was made just because it was that game. We will see how committee will manage the next steps, to me possible to see English VAR with English referees only in certain assignments.
Jovanovic again with an Italian team and this is becoming quite regular, most of the times expected performances and that's good for him, he can continue on this path. About Massa, similar assignment to Sevilla - Chelsea that he handled some months ago, not a real top clash between clubs from European big federations, but still something very close. Sevilla is no more the team we knew in past years... but as assignment at first glance it looks excellent.
Normal appointments for Ekberg in Lisbon (good for him just to get CL) and Schaerer in Glasgow.
Finally, Letexier in Dortmund could have definitely got something better, and looking at the observer I indeed thought about a Category 1 there... but surely the French is still under development, to make a further step in terms of consideration by committe as Elite referee, and he is young so he has time.

    1. Pinheiro's career path is quite remarkable after only one group stage game on matchday 2 in the Conference League last season. How do such career paths work? As far as I know, the national associations submit a ranking just once a year - and last autumn both Martins and Verissimo should have been ahead of him. If it is UEFA itself that meets such decisions: Which criteria did they take into consideration since Pinheiro didn't handle any UCL or UEL game last season and just the mentioned one in the Conference League last September.

      Delete
    2. About how a debut in CL is allowed, differently from Collina's times and the past, you are fully right, it seems there aren't criteria, and some referees get a very quick treatment than others, apparently without reasons. In the case of Pinheiro I could think on the fact that only Soares Dias in CL for Portugal for a quite long time is not so much so they decided to appoint Pinheiro. He was surely followed by committee with interesting assignments in recent times, but the path was indeed very short for him... this is surely unfair for many referees from all countries.

      Delete
    3. Can we imagine a referee from Lithuania, Poland, The Netherlands or Nothern Ireland get CL after just one ECL match? If not, it should not happen. Of course, I'm sure Pinheiro is a good referee and I wish for him that he will have a good match. But this won't be an easy match, with a team from Ukraine, a German team, so I can imagine there will be some tension and attention. Dortmund - Copenhagen would be more suitable in my opinion, and even than: why would Pinheiro not first get experience in EL?

      Delete
    4. Strictly speaking, Pinheiro already gained experience in the Europa League with one match each in the seasons 2019/20 (FK Oleksandriya - AS Saint-Étienne) and 2020/21 (Real Sociedad - HNK Rijeka) respectively - but no one last season. Nevertheless, his international appearances in the season 2021/22 (just one ECL appointment on matchday 2) didn't indicate such a career. Maybe UEFA kept a closer eye on his national performances instead and was impressed by the way he handled FC Porto - Sporting CP with 9 yellow, 1 yellow/red und 4 red cards this spring ...

      Delete
    5. Unfortunately, referees from Western federations are treated better than thos from Eastern football...

      Delete
    6. Impossible for a referee from N Ireland for Champions league. Maybe Youth League with their low quality now.

      Delete
  7. In recent last 2-3years some elite got 8/9 matches some are only 2/3. It proved either those who got only a few matches are ineligible to be a elite or those who got more matches from other planets rather than earth. But reality politics, nepotism influence the selection. For example, Makkelie is no doubt a brilliant Referee but somehow one of his mistake nearly cost Portugal out of Qatar, but Turpin with so many mistake example like A.Madrid-Porto still got the CL final. Rather than making such a chaos (only he is more capable, he can, he can't) make a good distribution, believe there capability.

IMO those who are going to world cup should get 10*5.5=55(GS-2/3 & KO-2/3)(some with 5 & some with 6)
Referee like Hategan, Dias, Manzano those who are good in league and good in European circuit 10*4=40
New faces with good potentials, regular good performer in own league and aged old faces also 15*2=30
This is just an example of distribution, if someone with good performances in GS surly deserve KO but poor performance in GS destroy his chance to be in KO.

Thank to Portuguese federation, we know that Visser (and not Vanyzere, who is AR, clearly a mistake) will be in charge of Barcelona - Plzen on Wednesday, with Martins VAR. Quite reasonable assignment.

    1. Lol. That destroys my argument @11:57 regarding the double VAR assignment in one week

      Delete
    2. No, it does not. Because Tiago Martins will be AVAR in Barcelona.

      Delete
    3. Thanks. I am curious who will be the VAR. Belgium VARs are not (yet) trusted on CL level?

Visser’s mother tongue is Dutch, he used to work with the French and Tiago Martins worked a lot with Kwiatowski this summer. Plenty of options ;)

      Delete
  9. Any predictions for the Atletico - Porto game?

My first thought was Orsato, but Irrati and Valeri have been assigned on Tuesday. This game needs a top VAR and I doubt UEFA would assign the Italians twice as head VAR.

Some clues can be found in AVAR assignments. Kwiatkowski, van Boekel, Brisard and Dingert are in Nyon on Tuesday and I doubt they will be just used as AVAR. I think they will all work on Wednesday as VAR. It could be Marciniak, Oliver, Vincic or Makkelie in Madrid.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There is a Dutch delegate in Madrid for Wednesday, so a Dutch crew seems unlikely (but still possible, sometimes this happened). Reading a Polish name as AVAR for Tuesday, I would indeed say that Marciniak will be referee for that game.

      Delete
    2. Yes, for me also Marciniak, Orsato or Oliver.
I won’t be surprised to see Makkelie in Bruges, a bit closer to home after he had to travel all the way to Bodo, Moldova and Trabzon.

      Delete
  10. It's good to see Higler step up as a VAR from the Netherlands. He's been gaining experiences in that role and has many years to come. Van Boekel won't be VAR for many more years, I can't imagine that, so they should really find replacements.

Interesting fact: Ruperti from the Netherlands has been added to the international VAR-list, but he hasn't been appointed yet. In The Netherlands he has done big matches (like Ajax - Feyenoord) already. I imagine we will see him also in EL. Interesting, cause he never did a match at the highest level in NL, but he is a very trusted VAR.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ruperti was AVAR in FC Sheriff Tiraspol (MDA) - FC Viktoria Plzeň (CZE), in early August, with Makkelie and Van Boekel as VAR.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I know. But this is relatively common. Referees like Perez, Van de Graaf, Manschot and others did this also, mainly in NL appointments.

      Delete
  11. What is your prediction for Inter-Bayern? It’s not easy because referees from Germany, Italy and Spain are not possible. Turpin is also not possible, he has a game in Ligue 1 at Wednesday

    1. Turpin has no game on Wednesday. Lorient - Lyon was reassigned to Bastien Dechepy.

  13. One of the most fatal mistake is Michael Salisbury who disallowed Newcastle’s goal due to “foul on GK” after VAR intervention while as you can see from the video, Willock was pushed into the GK.

Also controversy on London when Madley cancelled West Ham’s equaliser because of foul on Mendy which IMO, though it’s quite debatable.

Spotlight on Oliver who chose to stay with his penalty decision (which was correct) even after OFR

    ReplyDelete
  14. Congratulation to all Referees. Chefren and others made a good analyze of appointments. I mostly agree with all of you. What I want to highlight is no VAR from England. Unbelieve how down they went through the years in this aspect. One of the best championships in Europe, always produced some of the best referees, is not capable to have at least one good VAR? From what we saw even yesterday, Webb has a lot of work ahead especially with VAR.

    Plzen - Inter Hauge (NOR)
    Sporting - Tottenham Garibian (FRA)
    Liverpool - Ajax Argyrou (CYP)
    Rangers - Napoli Zimmermann (SUI)
Porto - Club Brugge Malcom (NIR)
    Leverkusen - Atlético Kassai (HUN)
    Bayern - Barcelona Duhamel (FRA)
Marseille - Frankfurt Melo Pereira (POR)
Milan - Dinamo Zagreb Strömbergsson (SWE)
    Shakhtar - Celtic Sajn (SVN)
    Chelsea - Salzburg Lannoy (FRA)
Real Madrid - Leipzig Kuipers (NED)
Manchester City - Dortmund Schluchter (SUI)
    Copenhagen - Sevilla Ingvarsson (SWE)
    Juventus - Benfica Messner (AUT)
Maccabi Haifa - PSG Medved (SVK)

Two committee members, Sajn and Kuipers, both again in the same group of Leipzig and Shakhtar, like Velasco on this matchday. It looks like committee has identified group F as the most suitable for refereeing tests in CL.

  17. Question for French readers, or those regularly following Ligue 1.

How common is the management/procedure of SFP RC situations seen today in Montpellier-Lille (Brisard) & Brest-Strasbourg (Dechepy) ? Is it a matter of referees' personal style or is it encouraged by DTA?

I.e: Blow the whistle, then check on the injured player to see if he needs medical assistance or which part of the body is he feeling pain on, and 20-30" later give the RC 'out of the blue'

    Clips:

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This kind of delayed card procedure is quite usual in Ligue 1 since the "VAR era". DTA quite heavily encourages referees to wait until they show a card, and not issuing a red card after pulling out the YC and change their decision after checking the injury severity.

BTW there is a similar management from the Troyes-Rennes game (currenlty playing) by the 4RCs-in-one-game-man Mathieu Vernice :D

    2. Btw - what shirts does France use now? The new Nike series have no orange, and no colored socks. Here I see orange and yellow and before Turpin with yellow and yellow socks. So does anyone know?

      Delete
    3. Ligue 1 referees are supposed to wear the 2022-2024 Nike referee kits (black/blue/green/yellow shirts with black socks), but there is a supply problem with Nike, who somehow aren't able to provide the kits for the officials.

For this reason they're using the Nike 2020-2022 kits (black/light blue/yellow/orange shirts with colored socks), and the referees will buy the new kits on their own (instead of waiting for FFF to give it to them)

      Delete
    4. “Change their decision after checking the injury severity.”

I’m not a regular watcher of Ligue 1, but in many leagues this is not possible because the fouled players are exeggerating so much… Imagine that Italian, Spanish referees would do this. “Okay, player has a lot pain, let’s issue a RC”.

      Delete
    5. Also, RCs with so much delay would be very difficult to sell to the players and public cuz they'd automatically think that protests/complaints have influenced the referee to give a RC.

      Delete
    6. Yes. The SFP standard in Ligue 1 is very different compared to other leagues and UEFA’s standard nowadays. We can appreciate this, especially when it’s done in a consistent way, HOWEVER it can create issues for French referees when they have to make the “transition” to UEFA standard in international game where checking the injury severity, or a glancing, ‘studs not loaded’-foul is a YC instead of a RC.

It’s not easy to turn 180 degrees in mindset, tactical approach, application of LOTG…

  18. More VAR issues in the premier league. Arsenal goal disallowed for a foul in the buildup. Never VAR stuff for me. Referee is Paul Tierney, VAR Lee Mason. Tierney should have rejected the review he was 10 meters away and didn't give it first time. Should have stuck with his decision

    5. Well I think this is where we agree to disagree cuz that's a foul all day everyday

    6. Agree its a foul but not sure on VAR intervening, Tierney should have given it straight away but I am not sure on Mason intervening. To be fair to Tierney he took a while to overturn at the monitor but it would have been almost impossible for him to then award the goal.

    7. This is exactly the kind of situation PGMOL said would have higher Bar this season and that’s exactly what has been applied all through this season until yesterday and Today!! 27. ZAG-CHE (65.) - Kovacs
Should Mount (CHE) have been issued a 2nd YC for this ‘using the arm’, would a whistle have sufficed or can we agree with the play on?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hard to say, how much Mount can be blamed for that. Thererfore I think, this remains a quite subjective call, so the referee could be supported for all three options.
Best choice probably the middle way, i.e. careless foul.

      Delete
    2. I think YC to be issued, not a violent conduct but surely a reckless action. For me missed second YC, and I think because Kovacs didn't have perception of what exactly happened. You know when it is about second yellow cards, it is very often impossible to be 100% sure about the crucial mistake, hopefully for him the observer will agree, but play on can only suggest us that he totally missed the incident.

      Delete
    3. Setting aside the misconduct decision for a moment, I am most interested in Kovacs choice to deliberately move toward the incident and put his whistle to his mouth before giving a demonstrative "keep going" signal. Everyone in his vicinity stopped. Had Chelsea scored off this, he would have had a BIG problem on-field. And then maybe even a bigger problem if VAR said this was an APP foul.

      Delete
    4. I tend to agree with Chefren here, reckless use of the arm and a YC for my taste, however I understand Philipp's points as well. A pity such an incident occurred in an otherwise very good match for Kovacs.

Very good and interesting point, usaref. He should have definitely avoided that, it created some confusion even for the TV viewers such as myself.

  30. I cant believe im saying this but I really hope Taylor screws over PSG big time tonight. 2. Indeed, impossible to detect for AR1. Good start for the new technology. It was not very fast either, but I can imagine it would have taken much longer in such a situation if the VAR had to check offside by himself.

    3. Judging by the video, it took only 50 seconds to reach the correct decision here, which is remarkable for such a situation. It would have probably taken at least 3-4 min for the VAR to check everything himself. And I fully agree that this was impossible to detect for the AR.

    4. When an AR is correctly placed it’s not very difficult to spot an offside like this.

    5. Well considering live it looked onside I'd have to disagree cuz that AR was correctly placed

    6. One of the tightest offside decisions I've ever seen and Mr. Anonymous thinks it isn't difficult. Far out.

    7. The situation is well below technical resolution, so tossing a coin would have been equally good and only have taken 3 seconds.

    8. In the disallowed goal situation, would the linesmen be marked down as a clear error 7.9 ?

  33. Good no penalty decision from Taylor, clear dive from Neymar. Hand from the defender but that’s all it was.

  34. Good performance in 2nd Half by Jovanovic. What do you think ?

  35. A rather calm evening of CL games, regular performance by Jovanovic in Salzburg, he is gaining more and more trust by committee withot being in the spotlight. Good game by Taylor as well in Paris.
I think that the most interesting points for discussion today come all from 18:45 games....

    1. I agree. Jovanovic had a good sound performance, no major faults, always close to what's happening, good communication with the players. Maybe the first YC is a little questionable.

  36. I can report a good performance by Ekberg in Lisbon. Very focused, strong presence, reacting immediately to any kind of dissent or mobbing (some FK decisions made players angry as promising counterattacks were stopped but those were cases of very mature and delicate way of refereeing - not awarding FKs could led to dangerous attacks and VAR wouldn't have been able to intervene, so it was better to whistle them live). There was a penalty incident (tripping) before the final whistle but, unfortunately, replays were not shown. Some seconds afterwards there was a SPA offence by MHA player and a clear case of delaying the restart but Ekberg simply whistled for the end of the game. One would say "smart", one would disagree. But if the penalty incident was rightly cleared up by VAR (we will never know...), the performance was at the strong 8.4 level.

    1. I didn't watch the whole game, but Schärer applied a good advantage before the second goal of Real Madrid.

  38. Anthony Taylor has always been Rosetti’s favorite, partly because of a clean history with Italian teams. But tbh, surprisingly enough, I noticed that he just officiated 3 (!) Champions League knock-out games.

    He did a sound Atalanta - PSG (2020), PSG - Barca (2021), and a non-decisive 1st leg Villareal - Bayern (2022).

I’m not saying he is a bad referee, on the contrary. He is a very good and well-trusted ref, but due to the presence of English teams, he was not exposed to that many intense & decisive contexts compared to other top flight referees. A part of the clean history can be explained by this, as group stage games are in general, more calm, and don’t generate that many media attention than, for instance, the games refereed by Makkelie, Orsato last UCL season. So, talking about the clean history with Italian teams and Rosetti’s love for Taylor… It’s also sand in his eyes. He hasn’t been tested and exposed as others.

    1. To compare:
Felix Brych refereed 28 UCL KO games
      Cakir and Kuipers 21
      Orsato 14
Marciniak and Makkelie respectively 12 and 11.

      That’s incredible and I didn’t even mention the euro’s and WC’s. Talking about exposure… ;)

    2. How about Turpin?

  39. Curiosity: it has been confirmed by a source. for some reasons, maybe problems in connecting with Zagreb, Dinamo - Chelsea yesterday has been the only game covered with VAR at stadium and not in Nyon. This is also confirmed by appointment, with Valeri and Hategan in charge only of this game.

  40. Reading comments that affirm there would be only 3 Eliterefs being goo. d options for topclashes - and same time complain Rosetti's missing trust in talents... This is nothing else than nonsense. There ARE more hoid options on toplevel. Lets count. Makkelie, Marciniak, Taylor. 3. PLUS Oliver, plus Letexier, Turpin, Siebert, Orsato, Kovacs, Vincic, Mateu Lahoz, del Cerro Grande, Schärer, maybe Meler, maybe Soares Dias, maybe Grinfeld, maybe Jovanovic and for sure Hategan when he recovered. So, WHERE is the problem. Maybe some guys only feel important when they pretend living in a forthgoing catastrophy, instead of being happy about many good refs on toplevel and many really promising talents ready to convince as well.
