    1. Was there a VAR check for 87' incident, because I think regardless it might be a punishable position to offside, assessed by the GK's movements and the GK's reaction after that, I think there was also a goalkeeper error. Do you have long clip for 87' incident?

      Delete
    2. Of course it was checked by VAR and they confirmed the field decision. This is a full clip, 10 seconds after the end of clip the game has restarted.

    3. I think that in both videos decisions by Kulbakov crew are OK or at least supportable, 8' is not a 100% RC and for Kulbakov's standards, the YC at that time is something indeed remarkable, then about the disallowed goal, correct due to attacker's position almost in contact with keeper when the latter tries a save. Very often such situations are never reported live by assistant referees and VAR invites to OFR, in this case given that AR1 saw it, VAR could only confirm.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Kulbakov in both decisions.

    5. Agree, both decisions correct for me. Although the situation in 8' could have potentially had a much worse conclusion; luckily, it didn't and YC is OK IMO.

  2. We gonna have crazy tuesday with 7! games with direct rivals for winners and relegation. I know we got critics here when we comment this game as challenging hot games and then they tend to be more like friendly game. But I think in last round all teams will go all out and give 100 %. Can add to this games Hun-Ita which will be played tomorrow. And ofc this games are not like liga derbies but a I sure they will not be like friendly games .

  3. It might be interesting to highlight that the Head coach of the Netherlands has PRAISED the performance of Hernandez Hernandez. In his opinion, after 4 nations league games, HH was the first referee that dared to let play, that didn’t whistle every contact, hence allowed NED to play their high pressing game. Some referees blew the whistle as soon a pressed player decided to fall, as he realised there was no way out.

I found it interesting to share this aspect, as his performance on this blog has been rated “mediocre”, too lenient, foul detection too inconsistent, and more (also by Dutch people!).

Gil Manzano, on the other hand, was criticized on this blog for whistling too many fouls in ITAENG.

This is just to highlight how “subjective” the (negative) comments could be, sometimes. Many opinions are formed based on personal preferences and the playing style of a team.

    1. Noticed that van Gaal send Collina and Wenger a letter to talk about the referee performances. He say that the pressing style of NL is made impossible by the strict behaviour of the referee. In the summer they had a videomeeting about it. Not sure if it was van Gaal with Wenger or Collina

      Delete
    2. Because I'm sure Collina has nothing better to do than read a whinging nonsense letter from a coach... of course refereeing should remember it is 'their' game, not 'ours', and co-operation is very(!!) important, it is also important to know when to tell clubs/managers to **** off as well when they are talking complete crap.

Btw there is nothing new about trying to lobby for the style of refereeing which suits you: whereas Italy lobbied for weak, pedantic Silva Valente for their WC1990 QF vs. physical Ireland team because they knew he would favour them, for the SF, they were desperate to have firm/strict Helmut Kohl, because he'd clamp down quickly on Argentina rough play. If Kohl reffed the game, I think Italy would probably have won. Instead, both teams accepted Vautrot. Same at USA 1994 with very politically tense SF Brazil vs. Sweden (Havelange vs. Johansson) - quite lenient Lamolina had the game, but Havelange removed him for strict law-enforcer Torres Cadena, as he would be harsher against more physical Sweden team. Colombian ref was 100% right to eject Jonas Thern, but I'm sure that Lamolina would only have given a yellow...

      Delete
    3. I’m not talking about a whinging letter or a lobby, as I would never be a fan of that... I just tried to endorse how our opinions are formed.

Personally I prefer a referee that allows to play (in a lawful manner), because this is the advantage of the team that plays nice football. Other people may support ultra defending teams and/or like the dark arts. Or a referees that issues a soft brave RC in the first minute. We shall respect each others opinion, but it’s good to realise that a negative feedback on this blog is not always truthful, as everybody has its preferences and that is totally fine.

    4. it's actually ridicilous that a fifa/uefa chairman has influence on the referee department, the refereedepartment should be actually completely neutral, without any national/fifa influence, and referees should be appointed by 1 former referee who is completely neutral, for exemple his own country doesn't play at worldcup, another idiotic thing form my taste is that national teams can vote against a referee.....iff i was the chairman of referees, and those things would happen, i would have retired long time ago!

    5. It was a teamsmeeting with Wenger. Van Gaal send him clips and the discussed it

So Collina is the right man for the job ;)

    7. My message wasn't aimed at you, K; apologies if it seemed the contrary.

@Erik - I like Platini's statement during Les Arbitres, "I interfere with the refereeing, but not the referees". That is the correct approach IMO. Referees in top football *do* have a duty to serve football with the way that they handle the games, and it is right that football politicians discuss with the refs committee about what the officials will focus on during tournament x. The problem is when they interfere with marks/appmnts/etc, as we know they do.

Weak instutitions encourage mediocrity, strong institutions encourage excellence!

      Delete
    8. Crazy if they can eject a referee…

      Delete
    9. Mikael, i fully agree with that statement, off course football politicians can discuss with refereedepartment where the focus must be.... thats normal, but more than that should not be possible!

  4. Andora-Latvia some very hard fouls in first 10 minutes. Can get ugly here if Papapetrou do not start showing som cards.

    ReplyDelete
  5. We all do respect for crucial games I think as some mentioned before game Romania-Bosnia and Macedonia-Bulgaria can be very challenging. Will be nice test for Meler and Wienberger. Romania has huge internal problems and I expect them to be here very nervous as with draw or lose they will relegate. Bosnia will play with hungry B team. And Macedonia-Bulgaria can get ugly because of political problems.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Before Latvia's 0-1 goal, the attacker was standing on the line of the penalty area at the moment of the goal kick execution. So the goal should not count, I think. And I would expect, that this is the first thing, VAR looks at.

    1. VAR can't check restarts. Imo this is something that needs to be changed

      Delete
    2. Even if it leads to a goal? Isn't the start of the APP reviewable?
"this may include how the attacking team gained possession of the ball in open play" in the VAR protocol.
Maybe a border case, unless there are clear instructions on it somewhere.

      Delete
    3. Maybe you're right, I think I've seen one or two similar situations were VAR didn't intervene and I just assumed that that was correct according to protocol

  7. I must give cred to Frappart when nobody support her in last period. Liechtenstien come out to play really hard again but with some quick yellow cards she calmed down them and after that had full control of the game. Even dissalowed very quick Moldova goal because of foul, correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Long (~3 min) VAR check confirming a disallowed goal by Moldova in 80'.
Tight offside position and also interesting situation regarding deliberate play by the defender. IMO correct by new interpretation to deem it as not deliberate, but I have doubts about the actual offside position.
Replay is shown in 84' - directly after a Moldova penalty appeal BTW.

    1. Followed only live text on uefa.com it said dissallowed goal because of foul. Appologize.

    2. Well it was an indirect free kick, Frappart signalled/said during the check, that it was a tight decision and there wasn't anything suspicious of a foul - so pretty sure the decision was offside.

    1. To be very clear, this is NOT directed at you Chefren, but to those above who think this shouldn't be a goal.

But if anyone wants that goal to be annulled, they are insane. And if they want that goal to be annulled via VAR... well, can one be doubly insane?

That's a mistake by the defense, period. Let's stipulate for a moment that the attacker is slightly inside the penalty area (I'm not even sure he is, but let's stipulate). So what? We think the difference of 10 cm is what turned this into a goal? As referees, we must have a feel for the game. Every player on Andorra hangs their head in disgust. No one appeals for encroachment. It is absolutely crazy to consider calling this. We see walls that are only 8.5 meters away all the time that block shots. Throw-ins taken from 2-3 meters in the wrong position that lead to attacking opportunities or goals. Free kicks taken from 2-3 meters from the wrong position. It's part of the game. All of that is part of the game. And, suddenly, we're going to annul goals that no one wants annulled because a toe was in the penalty area on a bad goal kick?

I'm sorry, but this has to be said. Some of you here are absolutely losing the plot.

    1. That's a clear foul, penalty to be given...

    2. Definitely penalty to be whistled, play on is OK according to VAR in my opinion, but almost impossible to accept in reality. The strong contact by defender with attacker makes the latter colide against another opponent in a very dangerous way.

      Delete
    3. Agree, clear penalty to be given. However, I think VAR should have intervened here, the defender was nowhere near the ball, just slammed into the defender.

  11. Osmers with 4 yellow card and 1 red in first 35 minutes. Who could think this game would be this hot. Anybody watching? Should be nice to see red card situation? Does Osmers take it or VAR call?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was a double yellow in the same scene: First a reckless foul and then pushing the opponent to the ground. So Osmers showed Yellow, Yellow, Red to that player.

      Delete
    2. Osmers looks very good. Most ref wolud be satisfied with only one yellow here, but this kind of situation makes difference if you will be elite referee or not. I think Germany have good future in Stegemann,Osmers and Schlager.

    3. Azerbaijan vs Kazakhstan? I definitely WOULD think it could be this hot :D

RC for KAZ3 was correct, it wasn't VAR intervention but two consecutive YCs, one for a reckless tackle and another one for pushing an opponent in his chest (+YC for Azeri GK who ran to confront the Kazakh player)

    4. I think, there is a clear change of direction of the ball from falling down to flying nearly horizontal, where only the blue player's arm could have caused that. So I am 90% sure about the handball. But I understand, that one can have doubts.

    5. Agree with Philipp on this one, the change of ball trajectory could have only been caused by contact with the Slovakian player's arm, which is punishable handball for me. It seems like a very good spot by the VAR crew (I also haven't detected anything watching the live sequence).

  14. Re: Osmers in AZE-KAZ.

Am I the only one who thinks that YC for KAZ20 (reckless challenge) in 29' could have been a straight RC for VC (tackle as an attack)?

It could have prevented the correct sending off of KAZ3 five minutes later.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. RC would be an excellent call but I'm still fine with YC personally, the ball is still kind of 'there' in the duel. The big problem is that Osmers is the 'loser' of the scene, KAZ no.20 is more interested in confronting an opponent than his YC, and then he walks off. The German doesn't arouse any respect there.

Similar speech can be made about the (correct, actually mandatory) SYC. Another referee could have easily prevented the retaliation by stepping in, but Osmers just lacks that presence. I must be honest: despite his best attempts, I don't see a referee with the skills (which should be) required to be in the Elite category of UEFA...

    4. 29': YC is OK, no VAR stuff, assessing it as RC is more about the intentions than the reality and I think we can't go too far away in this case.
36': Osmers in my opinion couldn't do anything different than what he did. Once whistled the foul, very clear YC, then pushing another player means second YC.
About the argument by Mikael, to show a strong presence to prevent the possible second YC, I must say very difficult to expect this from a German referee. I think they just prefer to wait and take decisions. I can remember many and many cards given with delay, and I want again to say that's because in Bundesliga they can do that... remember Osmers at Under 21, the game Italy - Spain was very clear about that.

      Delete
    5. Watched this clipps with double yellow from Osmers and i don't understand how do you think he could prevent this push from Kazal player? He went to players quickly showed the yellow and then sudeen push. And in all this mess he correctly gives yellow to keeper because he is out of his area.29 min yellow only is correct and even there he goes to players very quickly shows csrd and calm down situation. He is only 37 and with referees like Sanchez,Kruzliak,Kulbakov,Serdar,Stieler in elitee I see no reason why Osmers should not earn elite under his last 4,5 seasons. This small nations are very tough for refs, you could see today in first 4 games over 25 cards. Compare to Spain or Portugal game with almost no foul. I really like his progress and see him as German number one in 3,4 years period. Brych would handled this situation the same.

      Delete
    6. 29': I understand the point of view about the possible RC (and agree with it theoretically, based on the player's intention), however YC is fully OK and expected decision here, IMO.

36': I fully agree with Mikael here, but at the same time, I do not want to blame Osmers too much. Personally, this is about feeling the interpersonal tension between the two players, something brewing and boiling "below surface" and becoming ready to "explode". If a referee lacks that fine feeling, then this is everything he/she can do (it's the same in some other professions, e.g. police). On a technical level, Osmers did everything right here and should be praised for not ignoring the shove by the Kazakh player and settling with one YC only (YC for the GK was spot on too).

  16. Quite an interesting situation in WALPOL, AR2 signaled an offside which seemed to be wrong and quite immediately Polish player found himself in a goal scoring opportunity. Referee whistled too quick and killed the situation - it would be expected to keep cold head and delay the whistle even when AR raises the flag in a game with VAR

  18. Not convincing Treimanis, very lenient style that so far is not working.

Now at the end clear shirt pullinf off the ball aka.Chiffi style, and even that was not enough for him to brandish YC.

So far 2 clear bookings, but he is making game tense with his style of refereeing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. This is standard Triemanis. Take a look at his statistics in Europe, almost 90% of his cards come last 30 minutes of the game. Incredible lenient style some referee have in first half. It has to be almost for red card if they are gonna give yellow in first half. Kulbakov,Gozboyek,Sanchez,Massa,Mariani like this approach to.

  20. Well, the Latvian crew offered a very poor performance in the first half of WALPOL. It was very close to be completely out of control (de facto it was, around 30'). Treimanis couldn't find a line for foul selection, whistling some soft FKs against WAL what led to many dissenting behaviours he couldn't cope with in any way. Add to that some missed fouls and three mandatory cards (16' - reckless tackle by 11WAL, 20' - reckless use of arm by 14WAL, 30' - blatant delaying the restart by 5POL involving even a push in face) and suboptimal handling of borderline incidents (24' - illegal use of arm and subsequent holding, 45+2' - off the ball push, 45+2' - holding) and dissents. AR2 with two mistakes, too. Fortunately, things calmed down a little bit at the end of the first half but surely not thanks to referees.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The second half started with a mandatory YC for late trailing leg tackle close to AR2 (47'). Then, some borderline incidents that didn't help in controlling the game, like play-on call after impeding/illegal use of arm by 15POL (51'), no disciplinary sanctions to 16WAL after late challenge/kick (63'), 3WAL after simulation in penalty area (64') and 13POL after blatant delaying the restart (75', shocking to let it go unpunished, imo). In the meantime, two off-the-ball charging offences let go in 70' and 77'. In 87', mandatory YC to 18POL shown after SPA offence. In 89', missed YC for LoR holding to POL player (didn't notice the number). Four minutes later, a mass confrontation after foul and provocative behaviour of 9WAL and subsequent reaction by 15POL - both players correctly cautioned. In 90+4', two cases of dissent shown at first by Polish and then by furious Welsh player who was finally cautioned (it seems you have to furiously run towards Treimanis to get a YC for dissent though, many cases of undermining the referee's authority throughout the whole game...).

Well, I saw Treimanis in Elite two years ago but now he is very far from achieving it with such performances... This performance was a negation of what was told to referees at the summer course.

    8. So i start reading that there was a match in chaos and with 5-7 missed yellow cards. Interesting as i also watched a match and saw things under control and in normal manner for such match.

Took some time to make a vid of mentioned incidents to protect the image of refereeing and be kind enough to show the credibility expertiese of mr Beach Soccer Ref so next time who want can skip these comments.

All 7 YC given were mandatory (no need to show because correct decision are boring right?) and it was a difficult match. It was handled in a totally normal manner. Not anything special nor anything bad.

Yes there are maybe a few missed YC-s, but nothing big. Missing a card is part of the game in such matches.

And starting with YC-s in situations 16' and 30' is a refereeing suicide in that level of football. Maybe it different in Beach Soccer?

    13. Fully agree with Mikael here. After reading the comments above, I took some time to watch the footage of the match and Euro Soccer Ref was perfectly right in his posts and I agree with him.

The language and tone of some anonymous comments in this thread are unacceptable for a dignified discussion. We can all agree or disagree on specific refereeing matters, but wrongly accusing someone of having an agenda against a referee or trying to deceive the readers is something seriously wrong to do. I see absolutely no evidence of any of these things in Euro Soccer Ref's posts.

Last but not least, I would be more than happy to see Treimanis, or any other referee, genuinely succeed on the highest level, as I'm sure most of the contributors of this blog would. But that doesn't mean we cannot share our opinions about specific situations and performances, nor does it mean that sharing such opinions represents an agenda against referees. It's quite the opposite actually.

Also, this match is important for Bulgaria to be in higher pot for upcoming Euro Quali.draw so I just want to point out that Austrian crew can be in for a tough match if they dont use right approach.

  30. @M, I just reading that it can be some tense in Skopje tonight because we can call it some political dispute. Fans were fury against away team in interviews before the game,as late as in july this year Bulgaria stopped Eu process for North Macedonia. Add to that very bad weather conditions, heavy rain in Skopje tonight so it can fast get very ugly here. Now to referee Weinberger, it is very unproven referee and I am really surprised why Rosetti send him to such tense match. If he is lenient like Triemanis,Kulbakov in first half he will be in problem for sure. I have not see this referee many times in action but from stats only he does not look to be lenient, avg 4.50 cards per game which is a lot for Austria. But seems like all of his cards come in last 15 minutes of the game which is very strange(and many cards for the coaches).

Another very hot game tonight nobody has mentioned is Monte Negro-FInland, game for second place or relegation for away team. Same here very tough weather condition, with heavy rain and bad pitch. But for me very good referee here even if only 33 years in Letexier (probably best young referee in the Europe). So I m sure he will have no problems to handle this game.

About Bastien I am not sure this will be that challenging game as many think. Sure stake is big but this teams plays clean and everyone will be watching this game so I do not expect any dirty game. Anyway Bastien is solid with huge experience and can handle it.

Budimir's penalty appeal (I can't remember the exact minute, I'm sorry) is quite interesting: he tried to bounce from the defender to win it. Very good play on decision by Dias; it may seem easy, but I've seen plenty of situations with the referee deceived like that.

    2. He literally shoved Ádám over with one hand while waving the other about to say look Im not touching him! That should have been a penalty. I don't like Bastien's style at all but aside of that very subjective call he was reasonable.

  56. How can Makkelie award the English goal in such a poor way. He is turning is back to the AR, and at the same time the AR who is involved in the action, correctly "make a signal", but this signal is not correct according with the LOTG. ok ok ok... they have the Goal Line Technology... I know, but anyway the should have followed the correct procedure. It wasn´t a good example for the refereeing schools.

Having said that, of course this was not a good night for Makkelie but ey, don’t we all have a bad day every now and then?

And if you want to talk about Zwayer, fine! The problem with Zwayer is that he had bad nights like this time over time over time. And then we’re not talking about missing 2 penalties, but losing control, not being accepted by players, lack of personality etc.

  61. Next OFR, this time penalty for England to be given. In my view, it should have given a RC for SFP too, but it seems like Makkelie did not want to go so far. Studs up, hitting the opponent's shin, high force. Not very easy to detect on the pitch, but one could expect a high class referee to evaluate such an incident correctly without VAR intervention. Honestly speaking, Makkelie seems a bit unconcentrated today.

    ReplyDelete
  62. 86' in HUN-ITA, possible RC for SFP. Bastien gave YC for reckless challeng, in this game surely a different approach by the French if compared to his previous appearances.

  63. Difficult to make a judgment about the real performance by Bastien.
Most interesting situation because potentially very crucial for the game was the possible penalty for Hungary, he didn't whistle it and game became by far more challenging. However I think he ensured always a certain control and his performance was OK, but no more than that. The sensation is that, in case of even more difficult game, referee could have lost it. Let's see how much this possible penalty will be discussed, about the rest he was rather lenient than strict, differently from previous games, as said. Could have issued at least one if not two red cards due to players behavior.

    1. I dont think it will be that discised cause Hungary have only themselves and Donnaruma to blame for all thos chances where they couldnt capitalize.

As for non penalty, in real time it looked like it was, but supportable call,as we saw backeb by VAR.

His style was not so much lenient, but adaptable I would say.
He understood the significance of this game and tried to stay in the shadow as much as he could, unlike his previous UEFA performances.

It was weird seeing him like this,I enjoy more his regular style of refereeing ,but hey,it was as you said ,OK performance...

    2. Won't be discussed in Hungary. It's been mentioned, shrugged about and moved on from already. We lost because of atrocious defending for the first goal and Italy's goalie having an absolute worldy of a performance. Marco Rossi said nothing about it after the game, he mentioned the Italy goalie, congratulated Italy & said they deserved the win and then talked about Szalai Ádám and what a loss our kapitány will be.

This was quite difficult to spot for Makkelie because he was in movement with his head, as you can see from the video, he should have watched there at the exact moment of the challenge, something that you can miss, totally different from first incident. I agree with YC, not a 100% RC and UEFA will agree on that.

      Delete
    5. Hmm, I'm surprised that having a possibility to watch a replay, Makkelie still opted for a YC. I would maybe accept a YC given by the referee on the field but after watching replays, a RC is preferable, imo.

    6. Agree with Euro Soccer Ref on this one, RC preferable for me as well: missing the ball, hitting the opponent's shin with studs and rather high force.

    8. 50’ agree with others opinion here, Makkelie should spot live this penalty, maybe AR should involve to help the referee when he makes such a miss.
71’ although we have to praise AR for seeing live this goal still it was a strange flag signal, never seen that before
80’ yes, it is difficult live but for a top referee IMO this PK have to be whistle live not after an OFR.
About YC/RC I’m ok with YC, both players open their leg to play the ball, at the moment of contact we can clearly see that white 23 has a bent leg not a straight one, so intensity will be lower.

According to the German commentator, the holding was possibly outside the box. And when the player dropped himself in the box, there was no longer a pull.

    1. 45': RC for VC is possible, however I actually prefer the YC for UB in this situation, given the context of this game, followed by a stern warning. Now, if we want to assess the exact result of the card, it's rather questionable, seeing the attitude of the carded player, but I see Bastien "giving him a talk" just at the end of the clip, so maybe that sent a proper message.

79': Supportable play on call, no more than that. Penalty was indeed possible, a very borderline situation. I would leave it to referee's discretion.

87': RC possible for a "challenge as an attack" offence, but again, YC is not wrong (no studs shown, no high contact). I would support the referee again.

    2. 45. Italy's 8 should have also been booked for simulation. That was embarrassing. Szalai deserved the yellow. I can understand his anger at the shameful diving but he crossed a line grabbing his shirt & trying to drag him up. As for his attitude, according to his interview he was questioning the ref about if he saw the simulation. It was his retirement game tonight & was already emotional.

      79. Clear as day push with his left hand. That should have been a penalty.

      87. Ah Fiola. I love him but he is always a late tackle away from a card. He's late, as he often is and deserves his yellow. Not a red for me as said above no studs, not high, just typically Fiola late.

      Delete
    3. 45’ YC Imo is the only appropriate punishment. This simply is an unsporting behaviour, not a violent conduct.

79’ This is a clear penalty for me, attacker misses the ball ONLY because of the push and it wasn’t a small push. In that case a DOGSO while not trying the ball as well. Var intervention expected.

87’ Correct YC, challenge as an attack not relevant in this case I think, because the tackle aimed at the ball, but too late. High speed, but no studs, no high contact point.

      Delete
    4. 79' is quite a clear penalty IMO. The nature of the situation means that it suits the attacker to rather stop to make his shot, and then the defender crashes into him. I don't really see any attempt to deliberately stop in order to generate a foul. DOGSO is possible as well, but I think UEFA/FIFA want a yellow card there. For me at least, this situation is less grey than has been discussed.

  67. ENG-GER

Entertaining match! Team ref contributed to a very entertaining match and Makkelie is imo one of the best managers (if not the best) on the pitch.

From a refereeing perspective, two OFR's is unfortunate. 1) The first one was initially rejected. From a first glance, it looked like the German player tried to run through the English player. However, the kick was clear in replay. 2) The 2nd penalty - it seems Makkelie was turning away from the incident. Good cooperation with VAR. Strictly according to the book, you can argue about a RC. However, as a neutral watcher I preferred a YC here. Those of you that have seen the full game - and the full picture - will agree with me that a YC is the better decision in the spirit of the game, and also fully accepted by these fair playing teams.

Perhaps interesting to mention that both Germany and England scored a goal from a high pressing situation - a style that both teams prefer to play. Very balanced and entertaining game in every single aspect.

    1. Perfectly put kmk. I'm sure he'll be disappointed not to have seen them in real time but good teamwork with his team. One of them, the stamp on the foot would have been his blindside anyway, unless he has developed X-Ray vision, the player would have been obstructing his view. I think people forget he is just a human being as well as being one of the top referees in the world, there seems to be a higher expectation that he can see and judge things not humanly possible because of it and the criticism of him always feels that bit harsher to me, more because of peoples expectations than anything. He's had better nights and it was a tough game for him tonight no doubt but both incidents fall into the understandable category, imo. Unfortunate not incompetent. Overall he and his team contributed positively to a decent game of football and between them got the big calls right.

      Delete
    2. Exactly. Every referee is human and positioning is crucial. Penalty 1 – some might think, Makkelie’s position is "perfect" as he looks straight into it, however the best camera angle in replay was the one from the side. Perfect position? Think again :) Penalty 2 – some are convinced that it should be whistled live, but forget that a referee's view can be obstructed by, for instance, a player or because the referee is in a turn to follow the ball.

Some of the claims on this blog are therefore heavily exaggerated (‘terrible night’ or ‘nightmare to watch’). Unfortunate is the right word. If Makkelie had to make 500 decisions yesterday, 490 were correct.

This referee is on top of the field. Stands out, above the ground level, therefore expectations are always higher. Even his domestic games are extensively reported on this blog, which always surprises me a bit. As if people have an agenda to write him down.

Meaningless game? Not really. The second half was certainly one of the more spectacular, intense and least dull I have witnessed during this Nation's League campaign. It was a spectacular match, thanks to the management of the referee, who was 100% neutral in a packed stadium, who did not influence the final result in cooperation with his reliable VAR. In the end, that is the most important thing.

    3. Seriously, I am the last to critisize a referee but its just so unfair against other referee being critized here and Makkelie that makes me angry. Although he is very good manager, in his games there is almost everytime missed big incident and after that no problem. This isnt just right for me. Otherwise stop critisizing others.

      Delete
    4. @GRef you'll be hard pushed to find a critical post from me about any referee, I will always look for the positives, whoever they are. I can't agree with you on there always being a big incident missed in Makkelie's games. He consistently puts in above expected performances as his UEFA marks reflect. It is rare for him to perform below above expected level, probably why the criticism is always so harsh.

      Delete
    5. Agree. I had the impression that some commenters have an agenda and are already (more or less) running a campaign to see their favourite referee in the UCL final. :-) They will praise their favorite, and talk down the strongest contenders, like Makkelie, in a rude unfriendly way. The same happened last season: Turpin certainly not flawless, but he was constantly insulted by people who also realised that he was the biggest competitor of their favourite referee.

I don’t say it was DM's best game of season, but I distance myself from that nonsense. He is rarely overruled by the VAR and has been performing at a consistently high level for a number of seasons now. The major “incidents” that people tend to talk about are the typical 'grey area incidents', however they are never clear & obvious mistakes. It’s part of the profession called refereeing and he is truly one of the best atm.

  68. Here is 30' from Wembley mentioned by Ref_1707:
    https://streamvi.com/watch/1664262973

I would have played on too, Kehrer falls of his own accord after the holding and performs a 'schwalbe'. That being said, the holding is quite existent and García-Aranda gave a penalty for less at WC1998 and then got a semifinal as his next assignment. As Ref_1707 said, nobody could really complain about a penalty call here for that reason. Impossible to determine whether it finished in or outside the box, but I'm sure the VMO crew checked that carefully.

In general, my impression was that Makkelie wasn't at the top yesterday (game was on the background at home), some small stuff, he should have detected both penalties himself on the FoP. Anthony's clip (thx!!) just misses it but England unexpectedly gave the ball away at GER's penalty, so Makkelie had some ground to make up, and then Musiala tricks Maguire into this clear trip. Rice runs in the Dutch ref's vision, so if he watched the duel 'all the way' he would probably have given a penalty by intuition, but I guess he thought Musiala just kicked it too far and played for the penalty (he did!), though he did so successfully. Second one is quite a bad mistake, one of the (IMO) top two referees in the world should be able to perceive such a penalty quite easily, probably he senses sth has happened but doubts his perception a bit and opts to play on. Personally, I think a RC would be a rather/really bad decision here, Bellingham prods the ball away deliberately in order to get hit and win a penalty, Schlotterbeck is just late, never excessive force IMO (HUNITA 87' is by far more a red card tbh), yellow card is absolutely correct for me.

Despite the six goals the game was, from I saw, quite flat really and probably I'd have refereed this game quite poorly too :D. I wouldn't read too much into what happened at Wembley re. Makkelie's form, at least personally.

    2. Agree with what you said about the penalty incident in 30', after live sequence and without closer replay my first impression was that attacker looked for the defender to get the contact, then the replays were confirmations that his fall was quite theatrical, in order to "use" the situation. Having said that, of course penalty would have been absolutely OK for the action by defender.

In 00:17 you can hear a blasphemy from San Marino coach, I think, complaining about the decision and screaming about a backpass. In serie A such wording is punished by straight RC if heard by referee, but mostly players and coach are able to pronounce it "disguised". :D
