  1. So, UEFA has kept the split of referees between Georgia and Romania also in this KO round. The circumstances allowed that, but I think in case of need they would have been more flexible. Nevertheless, this management can suggest us how they work, in my opinion appointments at this competition can be considered quite similar for all games, so no need to make big chances unless extremely needed. They ruled out the referees with clear errors, I don't think Lindhout will be appointed again, while the Swedish gets the last assignment as fourth official.
Let's also wait for knowing whether the play off will be played or not.
About VARs, maybe the ones working as AVAR on Saturday will be main VAR on Sunday, we will know that tomorrow. The AVARs are indeed quite experienced officials, like Dingert and Frankowski, could be a confirmation that they will get games as main VARs.
Then, about the predictions: we have in my opinion Delajod (it depends on France progress, but he could handle the play off in case as well), Rumsas and Aghayev with next expected appointments.

    1. Also, if either both France & England win this round or both lose, there will be an extra game to be played and thus an extra refereeing team to be appointed (Olympics playoff game)

    2. Delajod after the PK (crucial for qualification) and leaving Belgium very angry. I doubt it.

  2. Sorry, but Lambrechts does not deserve a game in KO stage. He is just lucky because many of the referees based in Romania did many mistakes and there are not really other options left. While all the referees in Georgia performed quite well... some of them will unfairly reamain without more games.

    1. May I remind you kindly that lot's of referees appear to be lucky with some appointments, just because of circumstances they have no grip on. This being said, Lambrechts was observed a.o. by Kyros Vassaras and performs mostly very well, also in the toughest Belgian games as well. It is certainly more than "just being lucky"...

      Delete
    2. He whistled 2 matches in this Euro U21 and had no problems. No major incidents. He deserves his appointment. And if he succeeds in his 1/4 match, he could be a candidate for the SF or Final.

      Delete
  3. What if the referess appointed in QF also make ”clear errors”, which referess will be appointed for SF and final?

    ReplyDelete
  4. So UEFA not taking any risk with appointed experience VMO. Interesting to watch Eskas 3rd performances in front of “full house” Boris Paichadze.
With this circumstances I think UEFA must send referee from Georgia to Romania because 2 referees that had poor performances were homebase in Romania, or maybe 3 if we include Krogh penalty incident. But If UEFA didn’t change their arrangement, it’s like undeserved for Rumsas to get only SF, but if Rumsas appointed in SF, so the others SF could be Fesnic and the final goes to the Azeri.

    1. Agayev is a very particular case. 2016 U19 Euro final, and then 7 years later he is still not completely trusted. Also last season he had appointments from Nations league D(!) to CL GS. Lets see, he may indeed be appointed for SF od F game

    2. Tbh his style never convincing enough to handle hot game, nothing special about him, I don’t think he had natural ability as referee, totally different feeling if we compare to Strukan or Rumsas especially for Aghayev come from third world countries, so I think if he got the final or if we track back after 2016, Giorgi Kruashvili path little bit more lucky than him :)

    3. I remember him got VAR intervention in match involving San Marino!

    4. I agree that there is something not clear in Aghayev path, but yes, that's something common to many referees with the current committee. The CL debut came absolutely unexpected, now also for this reason, I think they are trying to give him finally the chance, we will see. Based on the games he officiated at this tournament, surely one must say he did well.

  5. Two easy games yesterday in the Gold Cup, without problems for the Mexican or the Costa Rican.
Guerrero in JAM-TRI, a game that is not easy to handle, but Guerrero with his experience handled it very well, I have to rescue the Mexican's ability to communicate with the players, smiles for everyone and that helped him in the game.
And Calderón in SKN-USA, I think the score says it all, an easy game where there was no controversy.
Good physical condition and excellent movement on the field.
    Good both.

    1. Have you actually watched Guerrero's match? He had a penalty kick overturned by VAR plus a wrong offside at Jamaica's second goal awarded afterwards by VAR - that's far from very well...

      Delete
    2. The offside was the assistant's error, Guerrero only did what the assistant marked and then, correctly, he scored the goal.

And the penalty kick, yes, it was his mistake, most likely he saw that the ball touched his hand but it was not like that, in fact if you see the OFR he makes a "no" gesture with his head and in less than 1 minute he changes his decision, it was a mistake of sight and that can happen to anyone, don't tell me no.
Other than that, I repeat, a good game.

I'm not Mexican as you may think, I'm just defending my point of view.

  6. Danny Makkelie has been named referee of the year for the second time in a row by Dutch magazine Voetbal International. Because of that he has given a large interview to the magazine. Few highlights for those interested:

    - Because of the WC being mid-season, the focus in the first half of the season was a lot about preventing any (serious) injury and not getting too much negative (media) attention for dubious decisions.
    - After the Dutch team elimination at the WC, the first response of Danny and his team was that it could be positive news for them to get another match. Being in the stadium during the match of the Dutch against Argentina, they did not realize the huge commotion about referee, 'childish' behavior of players, etc.
    - Because of this, it was clear that Makkelie could not be appointed to an Argentine match. The image of such an appointment would not be seen as good and cause controversy by the general audience and media, despite referees being professional and unbiased. This led to a huge disappointment and Danny retired for about two days in his hotel room. It was an emotional time and he really needed some time to recover. Björn Kuipers was the first one to call and he has been a huge support, also having missed the final matches at WC 2014 because of Dutch progression to the semis.
    - Danny's performances in the remainder of the season have definitely been influenced by the WC. The disappointment was huge and it took a lot of time to fully overcome it. Often he felt like his performances in the second half of the season were not more than a 6 or a 7 (on a 0-10 scale), where he and his team always strive for a 10. He openly spoke about this with his assistants, of whom he requested some additional support in 'recovering'. He wanted to continue refereeing for a similar reason as after you've had a car accident: to not lose trust in yourself you shouldn't stop driving but just continue.

Note that I don't have access to the full interview, I have to do with other (free) news sites who have published a few items from the interview:

    1. Hope he'll get better next season

      Delete
    2. It indeed sounds like the same disappointment that Bjorn Kuipers had to deal with after the WC 2014. After the WC2014, Kuipers had his worst season in 2014/2015. For Makkelie, the mental impact was perhaps even bigger, because the WC 2022 fell in the middle of the season.
I'm NL based, and I think Danny Makkelie is an excellent referee. During the 2019-2022 seasons, he was better than Marciniak. However, during the World Cup it is the current form that counts.

For me, as an outsider, it is hard to believe that Makkelie actually had a chance at the 2022 World Cup final, after their first two matches (including the Messi PK, which generated quite some headlines). And certainly because the Polish team delivered a flawless performance. I therefore blame FIFA for giving Makkelie false hope.

However, Makkelie should also recognize they were not the best performing team at the WC 2022, instead of moaning about the behavior of Dutch players and “almost” making it to that final. Sure, the behavior didn’t help, but IMO it also starts with their own performances. So, look in the mirror and say: we could have done better in Qatar.

Hope he will be back in his top form soon!

  8. Good to see VAR appointed in the remainder of the tournament. But i'm a bit worried for the VAR's. Does anybody know if UEFA is increasing the number of camera's in the stadium for the matches?

Take for instance the "famous" goal no goal incident in FRA-ITA. There were two situations to take a decision of. First, was the ball totally over the line and secondly if not, was it kept out by hand or the body?

I've only seen replays from the "main" stand of the stadium. And not from the other side. Also in other matches it appeares that there are only camera's on one side of the pitch. If i'm correct not even behind the goals.

So if that stays the same it will be a hard job for the VAR officials to take good desicions. Anybody with any news on this part?

  9. Portuguese and Italian VAR will join the competition as well.
UEFA has invited a high number of VMO, I must say.
Clearly Italian VAR will not be appointed for France...

    1. Will be interesting, whether (some of) those 8 VMOs stay for the rest of the tournament or they will come and go for each game and we see different names in the remaining games.

    2. Wow I expect that UEFA will send VMO with high credibility but somehow I’m also quite surprise with the lineup similar to UCL level eventhough this is only U21 tournament. Tiago Martins one of the best, I think his level is same with Hdz Hdz, Kwiatkowski, Brisard UCL final VAR, well… I hope we didn’t get another surprise performance too from well known VMO.

  10. Predictions for semifinals and final:
    Georgia/Israel-England/Portugal: Aghayev
    Spain/Switzerland-France/Ukraine: Rumsas

    Delajod for possible play-off game

    2. As far as I'm concerned, there shouldn't be any political reasons to stop such an appointment. There is obviously political friction between a lot of countries in this region, especially between Azerbaijan and Armenia, but I don't think there is any between Georgia and Azerbaijan

  11. From a very reliable source but not still official (it will be on Monday) here the serie A and B referees' changes for next season:

    OUT
Marco Serra (the referee of the famous Mourinho case, he was already in danger before that, not really a surprise)
    Gianpiero Miele
    Francesco Meraviglia
    Daniele Paterna
    Matteo Gariglio
    Lorenzo Maggioni (resigned)
    Paolo Valeri (resigned)
    Massimiliano Irrati (resigned)

Paolo Valeri and Massimiliano Irrati took this decision due to their age, form and quite long career, while the reasons behind Maggioni demotion are not clear, for this reason I think it is not fair to speculate, but I have my idea.
Daniele Minelli and Niccolò Baroni, who were punished because they wrote on a famous Italian refereeing site, will continue their adventure. Nevertheless, looking at the management by committee, Minelli was used like he was about to be removed, but this didn't happen. On the other hand, Baroni got some good serie A games. Also in this case one can have his own ideas, based on facts.
Almost all First Year referees, unless Ferrieri Caputi and Feliciani who were good, had a terrible season.
Perenzoni, Gualtieri and Rutella had an extremely negative season with repeated mistakes, but they have been confirmed due to "first year (unwritten) rule", this doesn't allow to send home referee after only one season, to give them more time. But the performances were really poor... they must start in a very convincing way next season.
There is also an update about Chiffi and Mourinho story: the Portuguese wasd expected to write an excuse letter to the referee, to avoid the ban. This was waited for a very long time and the case lasted many months, but at the end it turned out Mourinho didn't want to do that and so he got a ban of 10 days (not matchdays, but DAYS). So he will skip the next two serie A games at the start of the season. Here you can clearly see the difference between Italy and UEFA, OK, we are talking about different alligations, but the punishment in serie A nowadays are always very very mild.
The referees who will join serie A and B panel:
    Davide Di Marco
    Kevin Bonacina
    Giuseppe Collu
    Paride Tremolada
    Marco Monaldi

About VAR, almost all referees leaving the list are about to become VAR PRO, because there is the need to have more elements, while one VAR PRO will leave. The name in my opinion (no rumors about this one, but this is my idea) should be Banti. He made many incredible mistakes, like Nasca, but differently from him, I think that (again, my personal opinion) he doesn't convince too much in the role.
All is expected to be confirmed on Monday, as said.

    2. I didn't follow serie C, so I really don't know them. We will see.
In recent seasons, new serie A and B referees have been very often all disappointments, just hoping that this time it will be better...
I can only say that Kevin Bonacina has been promoted after "only" 2 years in serie C, and this is a signal for him, you know, Italian career has very long steps if compared to other nations. He got the serie C Play Off final first leg Foggia - Lecco in which he was heavily criticized for some decisions, now we will see how he will perform in serie B.

    5. Azerbaijan referees are a real disappointment for me!! The Azerbaijani referees, who performed in both the U17 and U21 finals, showed very poor performances. Being so insistent on these names unfortunately harms the UEFA referee committee as well. I hope UEFA acts fairly and will give the same chances to other referees as they gave the Azerbaijan referees.

    6. I had missed this incident, indeed very clear penalty that makes the final assessment about the Azeri referee different. He should have seen this and maybe it will be an argument when the choice for the final referee will be made.

  13. Semifinal:
    Georgia/Israel-England/Portugal: Delajod
    Spain/Switzerland-France/Ukraine: Rumsas
    Finale: Obrenovic or Pinhero
Possible play off for Olympics: Eskas

    ReplyDelete
  14. It was a big mistake that most of the referees invited to the tournament were chosen from the wrong names and also VAR was not applied in the tournament. But to be honest, the referee committee quickly returned from this mistake and now VAR is being used from the quarter-finals.

Although the referee committee invited the wrong names to the tournament, they did not make the same mistake in the quarter-final appointments. They chose the referees who showed good performances. I hope they make the same appointments in the semi-finals and final matches.

In my opinion, if Rumsas will not be given directly to the final match, he will be the first referee who guarantees to manage the semi-finals. Another referee will either be Fesnic or one of the referees who performs well in the quarter final matches. Fesnic was not at the expected level in the first match, because of this I would choose for the final one of the referees of today’s and tomorrow’s matches.

For the final match, I think 4 quarter-final match referees have equal chance. Whoever performs better, he will be luckier. For me, Eskas is one step ahead. All the names except Eskas,Lamberchts,Pinherio,Obrenovic,Rumsas and Fesnic surprise me according to the performance criteria in this tournament.

  17. I didn't manage to watch the regular times, but I was back for extra time, in which I saw a very convincing referee, great body language during when he issued a card. I always thought that Norwegian referees had a problem: being too much relaxed, like it was for Moen. It seems that Eskas has really worked to be ready to officiate games at international stage, he can indeed get the final, but ew must wait for the others.

  18. Speaking of the U17 World Cup, I read that in the last edition (Brazil 2019) the 5 selected referees previously attended the U21 European Championship of that year, taking this into account we can see where the final choice for Indonesia can go.
    I would say:
    -Agayev
    -Eskas
    -Peljto
    -Pinheiro
    -Obrenovic
    -Fesnic (as support)

I'm putting Peljto on the list because I feel like FIFA will call him up, you know, a new Elite that needs development but can easily be swapped out for Strukan/Fesnic and Krogh as support.

And almost always the referees of the U-17 World Cup that takes place AFTER the World Cup come from countries that are not very "in refereeing terms" known or powers (Sweden, Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia in 2019) and I don't see a problem in a group of Azerbaijan, Norway, Bosnia, Portugal and Slovenia by 2023.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I will swap Agayev with Rumsas, after previous mistake mentioned and unconvincing performance in long time I don’t think that he deserved to get the chance surpassing Rumsas. Fesnic? I doubt because Romania still have many good referees on the top category, they still have Petrescu, no need to hurry. I will replace Fesnic with Strukan/Krogh as you mentioned it in different circumstances.

      Delete
    2. Or maybe referee like Kruashvili, Jablonski, Kavanagh could get the chance.

      Delete
    3. Yes, that sounds quite logical and I especially agree on Peljto.
Maybe Schärer will be also selected after missing out on U20?

      Delete
    4. And yes, Rumsas would be another option, but as he was already at U20WC as support referee, maybe three tournaments in one year would be too much.

      Delete
    5. I agree with Rumsas, I didn't consider him because he was already in the U-20 but let's remember in 2019, Barton was support in the U-20 in Poland and he was a central referee in the U-17 in Brazil later, so why not?
      Rumsas deserves it

And why not reward Schärer as you say, I see it as possible.

And I think why not a Belgian name, Visser or Lambrechts?
      we will see soon

      Delete
    6. I see Schärer as a good name for the Paris Olympics instead of U17 unless Switzerland qualifies for them, they just lost to Spain.

  21. In 68' Portugal asked for a penalty, Obrenovic whistled against attacker, but this call seems to be wrong, in my opinion.

  22. What a superb performance by Obrenovič tonight. Very tough game, toughest than Georgia-Israel. Excellent body language, trusted by the players, something what I like to see is little delay before call, stay, see, call. Tough call was potential penalty as Chefren mentioned. I think that offensive foul was correct. Supportable by VAR. About others, Eskas very good last night, Lambrecths just solid. Wait for Pinheiro tonight. Still think that Obrenovič will officiate the Final.

I think still “too far” if we include political factor from Obrenovic nationality but if we calculate since group stage I think Eskas ahead than Obrenovic. Agree with Lambrechts nothing special from 38 y.o referee. Waiting for Pinheiro, which many of readers here support and expect his promotion (inc. me) but nothing given by UEFA.

  30. Okay, I reviewed the Pinheiro penalty situation from all angles and it seems his decision was fully correct: Kalulu doesn't play the ball, touches Mudryk on the right shin, this means the Ukranian can't move his right leg, then his left leg kicks his right leg, causing the natural fall -> foul.

    3. You already wrote 50 times that Obrenovic will get the final.

  36. I think next appointment will be Rumsas in Bucharest, Delajod in Batumi, and the final will be Eskas.

  37. My prediction:

ESPUKR: Krogh (I don't think Rumsas will do the same match twice)
    ENGISR: Fesnic (maybe Delajod)

    Final: Eskås

    1. Mine are:
ISR-ENG: Rumsas, Radius, Suziedelis, Aghayev - San, Tschudi
ESP-UKR: Fesnic, Avram, Cerei, Lindhout - Dankert, Delajod

Yes, that involves some travelling, but there was enough time since their last games - and Fesnic needs to return to Romania anyway...

  38. Will final appointment come out together with SF appointment?

    1. SF appointments have already been published.

    2. With these appointments, Eskas strong candidate for the final in my opinion.

    3. Is this a joke?

Absolutely ridiculous imo, Krogh with modest performances so far and Lambrechts after QF... And Aghayev, Rumsas, Delajod, Fesnic?

No logic, maybe Al Hakim can get a final now, wouldnt be surprised

    4. Most likely Ağayev, Al-Hakim and Lindhout are out from KO stage due to missed penalties. I don't know how Rumšas and Delajod performed - nothing bad was posted about their performances on here but it's not conclusive as we should watch full games in order to give a verdict.

    5. Dissapointing appointments for SF. I don't think it is necessary to explain why.

    6. And Lambrechts getting a 2nd game in KO stage means either that the committee is very disappointed with other referees or that there were 2 groups from the start and he was in the one with a particular focus. Good signal for him in any case, especially if he performs well in SF.

    1. He said that he expects him to be appointed for SF or F, to be precise.

    2. IMO Strukan could be FO on the final with Eskas as referee. With Fesnic already going home?

  40. With Rumsas appointment as FO, is it his decision against Spain deemed as wrong or maybe it’s just lack of “political support”? I think many readers on here really disappointed with this assignment (inc. me) because I think we have the same perception about who is the best or at least top 2 best referee in the tournament so far but I think Mr. Bjorn Kuipers had different conclusion.

    1. If not appointed again, indeed the main reason can be only that the disallowed goal decision wasn't supported by committee...

  41. What do you expect from 38 y.o referees except his nationality? Maybe Rumsas gesture too obvious to show that was guessing call, despite de facto it was correct call. Maybe at the moment Lithuanian it’s enough to have 2 young cat.1 referees, in the other hand Belgian maybe in crisis, I don’t know why Visser is not trusted, he’s still young, same with Verboomen. IMO Lambrechts not so different with Bram Van Driessche. I hope another big association (read: ENG FA) not use their lack of development with political influence, it’s just poor management and so childish to covering their truly excuse.
