And the other way around, Čulina and Kolarić are FO in their CL appointments
DeleteThe policy of fourth officials appointment by Croatian federation is particular. I already wrote that: similarly to Romania, they tend to appoint rather big and maybe not needed big names for low stages, don't know why. It looks like there isn't trust in NO FIFA referees for international stage, they could easily get all such games. As said, same is done very often by Romania.
DeleteAbout Maresca, being a Category 2 it is normal to get an appointment starting from this stage. It seems he is appointed for a CL game on next round as well, but the names of observers for him doesn't show that committee wants to start something, in my opinion. I read them as reward for the very good season he had in serie A. For a promotion (42 years old) maybe these are the last chances for him...
At least not this season, it does not apply to Romania. All 3 Second Category referees have a game in UECL in the list below. Plus, each one of them featured in Champions League (one in playoff semifinal from Iceland, one in First Round UCL first leg, one in First Round UCL second leg)

Marciniak will continue in UEFA, isn't it? There were some rumours in June that he received a big offer from the Saudis in June (since he completed football from the refereeing pov) but I didn't hear anything new about it this month.

This is what happens when a referee wants to handle clear yellow card offences with ”personality” and prevention that gives no effect.
DeleteThis behavior is not surprising when every player is allowed to make unsportsmanlike gestures without being sanctioned for it. Marciniak may be able to handle it, but another referee could lose control of it very quickly. So I don't think it's a good example for young referees.
