  1. Second announcement went better, overall good game by the referee, shame about the 2 wrong, but close decisions by AR1

    1. She mixed japanese with English. It was very unclear. They should remove this nonsense new thing. Body language is much more clear. Now they talk instead of using body language. Can't they do two things at the same time?

      Delete
    2. I dont get how you as a referee can put yourself in this position. When you are appointed as an international referee the first thing you should do is to sign up for an english class if you are not fluent already. Tess Olofsson did 4 announcements in her game perfect

Its not just about announcing decisions like this. How do you talk to players, coaches, colleagues and observers when you cant speak english?

      Delete
    3. English isn’t a world language. Especially not for Japanese people. You compare Tess from Sweden with a Japanese? More than 75% of Swedish tv is English. They learn English in 1st grade in school.

  2. I post it here again: Interesting situation in Spain-Sambia, third goal. Defender tries to commit a red card DOGSO in the penalty area (pushing the attacker), but the attacker stays on her feet and scores. The Referee is visibly showing advantage. Shouldn't there a YC be following despite the goal? What do the LotG say?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, you're absolutely correct. A yellow card is required by law here (unless someone thinks that was somehow not an obvious goal scoring opportunity!)

      Delete
    2. With the visible advantage shown by referee, should be indeed YC for DOGSO after the goal scored.

      Delete
    3. Yes but nobody expects it. They should remove that law. If it’s a goal who cares. But as it is now it’s 100% a misses yellow card.

      Delete
    4. Thanks for your replies! Glad that I remembered it correct. Of course I don't actually know if I would want to give it in one of my games if I'm honest, but I'm also not a world cup referee... ;-)

      Spain -Zambia
Announcement mix up: have to feel sorry for referee who clearly isn’t confident in English. Bad luck there should then be another one! Let’s hope Figa don’t overreact as she had an excellent game.

Advantage for GSO: Good alertness and decision to play on (claimed credit for a good advantage by only signaling advantage when ball on the way in to goal…!). Technically a YC, but if Collina wants people to ‘manage’ cards (ie. ignore them and often ignore clear offences early in games) then this has to be ignored too as nobody cares or expects a YC there, especially in a one-sided game.

  3. What do you think FIFA will do at CRC-ZAM? A "dead" game where neither team has a chance, chance to see a support referee? or someone who performed poorly and will get a second chance here?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No 4th official assignment for Ivana Martinčić 27-30 July. This makes her a strong candidate for CRC-ZAM.

      Delete
    2. AR from Palestine is a strong candidate for a dead game. She lives in Sweden and is probably around their 10th best AR in the womens league and would not be a FIFA ref. Swedens strongest AR-candidate (Almira Spahic, was in Euro 2021) would have been far better choice for this tournament. But politics...

      Delete
  4. The only YC in JPN - CRC, I didn't watch it, but it looks like an extremely fair and easy game for Ferrieri Caputi, maybe same as Spain - Zambia...

Moreover, I rarely saw the officials doing that still with the jackets.

      Delete
    2. What emotion do you mean?

      Delete
    3. Just try to catch the detail, not difficult for me to understand :)

      Delete
    4. There is no detail. She caught the coin and then changed her mind. Where is the emotion?

  5. i thought it is a shame that FIFA makes Ivana Martincic a 4th official so many times. She is one of the best referees but now i thought, what if they put her there to support less experienced referees. you can see her coaching them (see sambia/spain minute 37 she clearly says: " just send them out") love to see her!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It’s great that she’s taking on that role, but she has never been a referee at the World Cup herself, so it would be very unfair to make her wait just for this role, since she clearly deserves to be a main ref. If FIFA indeed thought about this (feels more like a personal action than a planned action from FIFA though), it should be someone like Staubli or even Adamkova, who already achieved games at the World Cup

      Delete
    2. thats true. well i just hope we will see her. i really like the way she works.

  7. Spain - Zambia, troubles with referee's announcement after VAR intervention:
    https://streamable.com/lpj1pi
I must admith, very poor to be watched and she was also angry at herself after, changing the tone. I don't know how much this, taken alone, can be enough for an assessment?

    1. Hopefully FIFA does not take much notice of this and rather look at the rest of the performance instead. Referees are here to take decisions, not to talk in a mic

      Delete
    2. Why is this such a big topic? She was very nervous and things like that can happen.

      Delete
    3. Second announcement: https://streamable.com/orycep
Better, but still with a very agitated body language.
Not clear what she says after "review" and before "offside".

      Delete
    4. I think she might be trying to say "number seventeen is not offside"

      Delete
    5. It's unfortunate, but this seems a good case where talking adds nothing. Pointing to the centre after a tv symbol is very clear to all. Saying just the decision with no explanation/clarification just seems pointless. I wonder how this would work in domestic leagues? I assume the local langauge would be spoken, but with no signal it'll take international audiences (and maybe foreign players) time to work out what happened. I would much rather a signal, then a clarification after if the situation requires. Or better still, Ifab to allow a trial of the live conversation being broadcast!

      Delete
    6. On another note, why took the decision so long in the first situation? Shouldn't this be much quicker with SAOT?

      Delete
  8. Very good performance by Fortunato

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well refereed game by Fortunato in Perth. Both YCs correct (I echo Ecrosse's statement about the 2nd one). Correct rejection of an early IRL penalty appeal as well. Not the toughest game, but still convincing imo

    ReplyDelete
  10. Best non-Uefa performance I've seen this tournament. Not fussy, noticable when needed, always in control. Really happy to see an advantage after an offside at 50' (several cases where this should have happened in other matches), and a foul throw being given (again, about time!) No doubt better games to come

  11. Serbia found another excellent referee for future in UEFA, Milos Milanovic. I am watching him in Crvena zvezda- Fiorentina. He will be flying soon.

    1. Come on, it was a friendly game and absolutely not challenging.

      Delete
    2. I have seen him before, this evening confirmed . I like to look beyond the mere performance, I look at the substance. It seems to me he has a lot of it. We'll talk again in three years dear anonymous.

    3. We heard similar things about Maresca a few years ago, but he is still at the same level, with no significant progress...

      Delete
    4. I agree with pita, I think someone also already said when he got UECL match last year in such young age, the new Milorad Mazic.

      Delete
    5. talent and career do not always travel parallel, bad luck, crucial errors or the personal interpretation of a committee member can determine the way... but if you feel like watching some of Maresca's matches you will understand his excellent skills

  14. How to avoid YCs at all costs: Yamashita's first half. Ignoring PI (e.g. Groenen), wishing away reckless offences (e.g. tackle in 13') and rather than using her cards giving verbal warnings until the cows come home (27', 45+3', 45+4'). There is leniency and there is simply not doing your job.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, the tackle in 13 is a big mistake, clear YC for reckless challenge. I can support the verbal warnings in 27, 45+3 and 45+4 but she really can't continue to keep her cards in her pockets. Her great alertness stops this game from boiling over, but not even that can save her for much longer

      Delete
    2. If you're okay with only cautioning 1 of all those incidents mentioned. Then you sir, are part of the problem. The matched turned into an ugly overly physical brutal affair because of Yamashita.

      Delete
  15. Are Reserve Assistant Referees not being appointed? Or are they just not noted here?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Does FIFA really think Yamashita is one of the top refs? I am really confused. There were so many times where a dutch player made no attempt for the ball and pulled shirt and hair. No yellow

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Who are you kidding? Yamashita is an "amazing" referee (in the eyes of those who wish to destroy what refereeing should be). She's exactly what FIFA wants its "modern" referees to be. Mindless lumps of spineless mush that follow "orders", no questions asked. So don't be surprised by the matches she's assigned to. FIFA rewards those who are good sheeple.

      Delete
    2. She recovered very well from her biggest mistake in the match when she did not card NDR #10 for a really nasty foul on USA#10. This was shortly after giving the USA the first caution for a nasty reckless (retaliatory foul). Prior to this she had done her best to control behavior with 4 "public talkings". USA#10 was really hot, and let it show. Ref, took her time, allowed some dissent then waiting till the temp went down before proceeding with a corner (that #10 USA scored on). After that it was soccer the rest of the game. Could have been a disaster for the Japanese ref, but it all worked out well for her. Some would say luck, others would say great management.

      Delete
    3. “FIFA wants … mindless lumps of spineless mush who follow orders no questions asked.” You say this about referees using judgment when deciding to call fouls and issue cards to control a game vs a robotic stance where everything is called and every situation in which a card could be issued it is. I would suggest you are the one advocating for mindless lumps of spineless mush to call games in strict adherence to the laws of the game. I remember world cups where cards were issued for all the things FIFA was trying to crack down on and it wasn’t a pretty game, and the players didn’t adjust. They still time wasted, I think there is also something to the idea that you can call a match differently in a brief tournament like the World Cup vs a marathon 8-10 month season. A strong referee can use their personality more in a World Cup to manage players and keep them in the game when cards issued have more severe consequences.

It’s pretty arrogant for the people on this blog to think they understand the game better than the people governing it. And Collina is arguably the greatest referee ever (not saying that he absolutely is, but that the argument is out there). He probably understands a little more about controlling a match at that level than we do.

There was a lot of complaining about refereeing at WC2022. If you only read this blog and didn’t watch the matches, you would have thought it was just horrendously officiated from top to bottom, except for maybe the final, which everyone agreed was great. But matches that reportedly should have had five more yellow cards issued and maybe a send off were highly entertaining, often without a lot of dissent, and the players played. I thoroughly enjoyed that WC, and aside from a bit of a rough start for a few officials, have really enjoyed the matches I’ve been able to see here. There were some early women’s world cups where because of countries advancing, the referees selected in later rounds weren’t great. I’ve not seen any indication that will be a problem here. And if Yamashita gets the final next month, it will be well deserved.

  17. All the BS that happened from the 61st minute up until the US scored. Was a completely pointless "stunt" by Yamashita. It truly felt and looked as if she simply likes hearing herself speak. Because the players weren't paying her no attention because she had already lost them. I thought she was going to make Horan and van den Donk hug and kiss to make up. That's how dumb that whole thing was. For a referee that seems to want to go unnoticed, she made it all about herself for that time period.

  18. If this is what passes off as good officiating. Maybe it's time to look for other sports, where referees actually honor and follow their rule books.

  19. I just realize that there is an all-CONCACAF match in the group stage (Panama - Jamaica) that will be handled by Kateryna Monzul. How was that draw result possible? Usually, two teams from the same confederation are not allowed (with the exception of UEFA with more than eight representatives)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Haiti qualified after play-offs, but the draw was made before the play-off results were known; since it is impossible to account for all confederations that participate in a play-off path, this is not taken into account and so Panama and Haiti ended up together

      Delete
    2. I think, I found the answer to my question: The draw was made when the play-offs were still pending:
      Group A with AFC/CAF/UEFA
      Group B with CAF/CONCACAF/CONMEBOL
      Group C with AFC/CONCACAF/CONMEBOL/OFC
There would probable have been too many restrictions if one had considered all the possible results. For example, the winner of group A should have been drawn in a group with exactly one other UEFA representative as well as one from CONCACAF and CONMEBOL each. (OFC was itself in the play-offs).

This is a missed RC for me.

      Delete
    3. The idea that this is a missed red card seems insane to me.

The defender is trying to clear the ball off the goal line. She only has eyes on the ball. She turns and kicks at the ball and an opponent (who also only has eyes for the ball) gets there first and heads it into the net. Both players were absolutely doing their jobs and they only thing they should do. It's all instinct. We're going to send off defenders who are second best here AFTER the goal is scored? Why? Who on the field reacted like this was an egregious or unacceptable challenge?

Goals matter a lot in our sport. People are desperate to score them and desperate to stop them. Sometimes unfortunate phsyical results happen. This isn't a gratuitous kick the abdomen at midfield. It's different. And the players understand that. We would do well as referees to understand that, too. The idea that any referee would sort this out with a red card is somewhat frightening to me.

      Delete
    4. IMO the comparable incident in SWERSA is a pretty nasty challenge and a RC could be an option (in theory), but on this scene I agree entirely with what usaref wrote.

      Delete
    5. Rather an unlucky incident, with defender trying a save, totally unaware of opponent coming to score, and then you have as result a very strong kick on chest. No other options than red card for SFP if you assess the incident without the context, but how much referees must be allowed to find such explanations for challenges? This could be valid. If football refereeing is understanding of the moments, we could then explain many moments... basically I would agree with you, but this was an extremely dangerous action. Then we see penalties for very soft contacts and all people are happy, this is definitely something more serious. I threfore think you can't blame a referee issuing a RC. Also, according to my opinion, this was definitely more evident than SWERSA.

      Delete
    6. I'm sorry. I'll leave things alone after this, but I just have to respond and say you DO have to blame a referee for issuing a red card here. It would show absolutely no feel for the game or its participants. I can't believe people are seriously suggesting that's the correct outcome here. It shows no understanding of what our role and responsibilities are in the sport.

Also, why is this an "extremely dangerous action?" She's trying to clear the ball off the goal line. She did exactly what every defender in the world would do in that situation. Nothing more.

"If football refereeing is understanding of the moments..."?!?! There should be no "if" there.

She is well trusted, very experienced and has had all other great finals (EURO 17 and Champions League). But I think it will be a referee from another confederation, but probably it also depends on the last two teams. Staubli should definitely be a candidate for late stages of the tournement.

      Delete
    3. I see the point of appointing a ref from another confederation; in the end, the WC needs a suitable ref for the final. Till now, there is just no ref who has stable and good performances like UEFA refs when it comes to female refs. 3. I grow tired of this "no VAR stuff" for things like 66'. It's a deliberate foul to stop a goal-scoring opportunity. Just because the Portuguese player still gets the shot off we are supposed to say "meh, good enough?"

We parse handballs down to a science on plays where we know they are completely accidental. But we should let these sort of fouls go because... why, exactly?

I'm sorry, but it's comical that this was a play on and very poor by the VAR team to not intervene. If this is good officiating we are missing the forest for the trees.

  29. I'm slightly bemused by the amount of potentially avoidable travelling undertaken by some of the officials as the tournament progresses. It is obviously impossible to have 1 base for all officials given the geography of the host nations. It looks like Makalima will be FO at all 5 games in Perth (she travelled Perth-Melbourne-Perth for GER-MOR). FOs for the 5 other Australia grounds will be a mix I expect. Ditto Martincic as FO in Auckland, Fernandez as FO in Hamilton, Marcotte/Demetrescu as FO in Dunedin & Wellington & Kim in Wellington. Foster had BRA-PAN on 24/7 in Adelaide & then has SWE-ITA on 29/7 in Wellington. Monzul had HOL-POR on 23/7 in Dunedin and then has PAN-JAM in Perth on 29/7. Oloffson had ZAM-JAP in Hamilton on 22/7 and then has ENG-DEN on 28/7 in Sydney. Oh had SPA-ZAM in Auckland on 26/7 and then is FO for ENG-DEN on 28/7 in Sydney - that strikes me as ridiculous. And, perhaps most peculiarly of all, Demetrescu is FO twice in Australia and then flies to NZ for another 2 (at least) FO. Physical and mental health concerns alongside confederation neutrality, it seems the former are underestimated.

I have noticed over the course of the tournament that the leniency we saw early on has faded a bit. Maybe FIFA didn't like it. Yamashita appointed as fourth official, as well, is notable.

Decent game for Borjas, though I expected something a little bigger. And Beaudoin, well-trusted, gets an important game, but one that could turn out to be much less difficult than it is important. So, in a sense, this is a game that protects her for future assignments, while also being an insurance policy in case the match becomes difficult and/or critical for qualification.

90'+10' a very hard shoulder charge in China's penalty area. To me, debatable incident but definitely not a clear error. Comparisons can be made to the 76' incident, though this one was more shoulder and less back, despite having more force.

Then 90'+11' a possible holding/impeding foul by a Chinese defender. I think by the book it is impossible to argue against the claim that this is impeding with contact when not within playing distance of the ball; however, it's one of those things that is just never called.

  58. One of the poorest performances so far. Underpunished clear SFP, deficient in foul detection and disciplinary, and for me, at least one missing and one wrong intervention by VAR...

    ReplyDelete
  59. I might be in minority about this one, but I genuinely can't find a reason for the VAR intervention to revoke the penalty awarded to Haiti. Just look at the impact between the defender's arm and the attacker head. Simply never a crucial mistake.

Below-par foul selection, especially in crucial incidents (76' is a really, really clear foul in my view and 90+10 is a wrongly assessed ball clearance at the very least). Huerta de Aza simply has to be rejected by FIFA, I would be stunned if she gets another appointment as referee.

    1. I feel bad for Huerta, because this game (even added time alone, maybe) had far more critical incidents than most of the other matches at this tournament! But there were just too many mistakes. Considering Lehtovaara got relegated to 4th Official for similar mistakes, I think we can expect the same fate to Huerta.

  62. Evident RC missed by Huerta De Aza, good VAR intervention, it was expected.
Will watch the rest of incidents soon, but Smala is right when saying that there were many crucial situations, and some of them difficult to read. It doesn't happen in all games, so you can't say that another referee would have surely done better. This is refereeing, you must be ALSO lucky, but yes, taking alone the RC incident, is enough to say that she had to see it and this will probably cost the tournament. About the penalties, one can have still different views, but still,.. incidents can also be missing in a game.

I must say that based on last replay, indeed we can be (are?) in reckless area, putting the hand and making a certain pressure on face. Very often, we see soft cards for such kind of incident, in this case it would have suit, because player did that even deliberately (but still not violent act).

Some things definitely to be revieewd in this game, not the best performance, all about how much important will be for committee these incidents. Second game still possible.

  64. China - Haiti RC full live sequence:
    https://streamable.com/abgfsb
The reason of the mistake by referee, assessing only a reckless challenge and missing the point of contact, can be in my opinion easily found in the unnecessary excessive backward movement. Had she stopped herself some seconds before, instead of going so far away, she would have spotted it. Of course you can't expect a SFP in all circumstances, but in this case in my opinion with a different positioning she could have easily issued the correct card. Even only a few steps backwards less than she did.
OFR is perfect regarding timing and understanding of the missed situation by referee once at the monitor, the key frame is shown (point of impact), then one decisive replay and nothing else to see, the RC is obvious, an Elite referee doesn't hesitate, all correct.
Then a comment about the crowd, quite mild reaction if compared to announcements about goals and penalties, some people reacted only after the shown RC instead of YC. I really dare to say that most of fans don't have the basic knowledge to understand what referee says in such circumstances :D especially terms like "Serious Foul Play". Emotions are only with goals and penalties...

    1. You're wrong in your "assumption" about Huerta de Aza. I can 100% guarantee that even if she had the best unobstructed view of the challenge. She is not going straight Red Card. Don't forget that nowadays everything in the moment on the pitch is under punished. It's left up to VAR to actually make the hard/gutsy decisions. That's what FIFA wants and that's what these referees blindly go and do.
      - Cynical fouls that are by the book Yellow Cards are now just endless/meaningless hand gestures and talks.
      - Fouls that in any other era would be no questions asked Red Cards are now just a Yellow Cards.

    2. On the crowd, also worth noting there was a large Chinese support in the crowd, who, like the players, probably did not understand the announcement because they don’t speak much English.

  65. I also feel bad for Huerta de Aza. I didn't watch the whole game but from what I saw it is clear to me that she had a tough game and I also think she took many correct decisions. Of course it is expected that an Elite referee gets the RC correct but regarding the penalty situations she was not that wrong. The one she initially gives is soft but in my eyes supportable and no stuff for VAR and the other appeals she waves correctly away. Time management was good and I also liked that dhe cautions the Haiti coach.
Honestly I saw poorer performances in this tournament in much easier games. Probably these were to many controversies now, but personally I would ulf like to see Huerta de Aza once more. Let's see.

    1. She's mediocre at best, whose referee team required (4) VAR interventions. With how low the bar is currently set for these referees. I'm not surprised to see these types of disastrous performances. While women's football continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Most of these women referees have been surpassed by the level of play. Add in FIFA's ridiculous ideals on how a referee should perform and you've got a recipe for disaster.

      Delete
    2. 4 interventions? I thought there were only 3, the red card, the China penalty given, and the Haiti penalty overturned.

      Delete
  66. Why are all of you piling on Huerta de Aza?
The foul on the Red Card is the type of cynical foul that is trying to be normalized as a common foul with maybe a Yellow Card shown. Personally, I was quite surprised that VAR actually intervened.
When people say, "not enough", "too soft", "definitely not VAR stuff", "not enough force", etc. Then you are all part of the problem of which you then go and crucify the referee when he/she gets it wrong.
FIFA and its Referee Committee can talk until they're blue in the face about taking care of the players. But until the referees on the pitch actually show with it with actions. It's all talk, and talk is cheap. It's cheap in press conferences and it's cheap on the pitch. Because actions speak louder than words. But FIFA doesn't want its referees to take any actual meaningful actions on the pitch.

  67. Still Haiti - China, the rest of the incidents

72' VAR intervention to cancel an offside decision and confirming a penalty originally whistled by referee before changing to offside:
    https://streamable.com/no50rc

76' Penalty appeal, no VAR intervention
    https://streamable.com/q5a2an
In my opinion it was penalty and it looks inside. If in this case VAR didn't intervene because outside (but I don't thin so) I would find this announcement to fans by far more important than the other communication. For me this is a foul and should have been whistled.

    90'+2 Revoked penalty after OFR
    https://streamable.com/2b2g60
I agree that this shouldn't have been whistled, too soft and never a penalty, but at the same time I'm not 100% sure this was clear and obvious mistake as the defender made a certain action with arm on the shoulder. Surely play on is best decision, but strictly according to book, to me this wasn't VAR stuff. Common sense was added in decision making, but definitely penalty area's decisions are mostly grey areas, so this is what we have. Another VAR maybe wouldn't have intervened... what I can say about Huerta is that she maybe whistled too hurry this penalty, thinking about something definitely more serious.

    90'+7 Possible penalty for holding
    https://streamable.com/igzvbc
We must admire attacker's behavior here, she continued her action, but she was strongly and firmly held by opponent all time long. This didn't make referee notice about the infringment, and at the same time it is difficult for a VAR to intervene, but surely if UEFA keeps the battle against holdings, this one should have been a big call by Spanish crew. Many things to discuss, sometimes player must act unfairly to get penalties... and I think this is not good.

    90'+10 Another possible penalty
    https://streamable.com/dhr7w7
VAR allowed play on, in this case I agree. Definitely less penalty than the situation in 76' that remains as the "main one", in my opinion. In this case Huerta De Aza could have whistled, but no mandatory. Still maybe a slight perception of more penalty than nothing, but no more than that and close to 50-50.

    90'+11
    https://streamable.com/fwbj8m
Deliberate action by defender to impede opponent from reaching ball by taking position, very hard to see a penalty in such situations, OK play on for me.

So, an incredible game for Huerta de Aza, clearly we can't say that another referee would have done better (or worse). Can committee consider this? But for me etremely unlikely to see her in another game.

Summing up, for me important mistakes are:

    1) Missed RC
    2) Penalty in 76' if INSIDE, clear mistake and also VAR mistake

All the rest: one can discuss. But unlucky for the Spanish that all this happened in only one game.
Would be nice to have many opinions...

    1. My opinions are above, but I messed the incident in 76'. Not good not to whistle at all there, it is expected that a UEFA elite sees this push and gives free kick/penalty kick. So my assessment is less positive than before but still I think the spagnard did not a bad job regarding the late penalty incidents.

      Delete
    2. Eerily reminded me of Lindhout in FRAITA U21, an insane amount of crucial incidents to assess. Good presentation, but poor decision making.

      Delete
    3. In my opinion, all of these penalty incidents above could actually be whistled. For every situation there are points to whistle a foul. But, I totally agree, that the most important "Mistakes" have been the missed red card, the missed push in 76min, and the VAR intervention in the 90+2 minute.

All in all, both, VAR and Huerta, should be out. But I'm still hoping that both AR's will get a new referee (why not Martincic?)

      Delete
    4. @Quilava I also liked the presentation. Even with the controversies she leaves a professional impression. I also liked the management of the penalty that is finally given. She didn't hesitate for a second. Initially whistled and kept sure and confident about her assessment after the offside review.

      Delete
    5. Yes indeed a pity for Huerta De Aza, I think she has been very unlucky at major tournaments, remember also EURO. All the referee should be tested with similar games for being fair in the assessment!
About assistant referees, Porras Ayuso excellent performances also at men's level, but the Croatian made this mistake before penalty, despite of her big experience. You can excuse her but it was borderline situation and she could have detected the ONSIDE. So maybe an argument to be considered.

      Delete
    6. She could have detected it, yes, but it was an incredibly close call and therefore not a mistake that should determine whether she can stay in the tournament. These are exactly the decisions for which the technical support was introduced.

      Delete
    7. If FIFA wants to maintain confed neutrality and not give a referee a 2nd match only in R16 (not so small Ifs...), there are only three real options for UEFA referees (+ the unimportant CRC-ZAM), so those should go to Frappart, Welch and Staubli.
So in this case, it would be hard to find a game for Huerta anyway (unless she directly gets CRCZAM) - and there is also Caputi as another UEFA option.

      Delete
    8. On the situations:
90+2' shouldn't be a VAR intervention based on the normal line, we see for clear and obvious mistakes. We sometimes (e.g. in Bundesliga) get explanations for that like "crucial moment of the game" or "the referee wanted to see it again himself", so that could have been the reason here. I don't really like such arguments, because they lead to less consistency.
90+7' shouldn't be a VAR intervention as well IMO.
Yes, technically there is a foul, but it is quite far away from a situation, where everyone expects a penalty and therefore it certainly misses the "obvious" aspect.
On the rest, I agree with Chefren.

    9. At least the explanation given by Huerta for the 90+2 incident was actually somewhat helpful (even though VAR intervention was still wrong for my taste)

    1. Wow, lots to discuss here.

Martincic comes “off the bench” to work a game that figures to be pretty one-sided on paper but is nevertheless important for qualification. And breaks confederational neutrality in the process.

Frappart with a predictable assignment, though I’m a little disappointed to see it tbh - her first game was actually poor, surprisingly. Nevertheless, if anyone has the body of work to warrant such a big appointment after a bad first match, it’s her.

Garcia’s game is pretty good, it should be competitive and it is surely important for qualification too. I didn’t watch her first game too closely, but FIFA must be satisfied with it.

Koroleva with a “big” but relatively unimportant matchup between two big teams who have already qualified. Curious to compare this to her compatriot Penso’s game, which is sort of the opposite: fairly small teams (with the caveat that one is a host nation) but very important for qualification.

And finally Karboubi on the dead rubber match. Very rare to see confederational neutrality broken with a CAF referee! Interesting that they chose to give this game to a referee who already had a whistle instead of debuting a “support referee” here. And it strikes me as different from, for example, Wilmer Roldan and Nawaf Shukralla’s dead rubber matches in 2018, which were essentially punishments for “bad” performances from referees with a lot of expectations (I strongly disagree that Shukralla’s POLvSEN was bad but that’s another debate); for Karboubi getting two games at all at this tournament must be seen as a success. Maybe others can weigh in, but this strikes me as even potentially a “developmental” appointment for her, to get her more experience at the WWC in preparation for the future, perhaps? She will get more out of this game than a confederationally-neutral referee would.

    2. Oh, and Olofsson as 4th on the biggest game: I wonder if this is some rejection of her performance. Or perhaps they just didn’t have plans to use her going forward (or maybe they even still do) and just wanted a quality referee as fourth official on such a big game.
