  1. This basically confirms a promotion for Schnyder next recategorization, it was expected before but this is final confirmation

  2. One of the most surprising set of appointments in recent times, I think.
Bastien (like Collum) gets a very important game, which is unexpected given his other appointments.
A Second category referee in a game, where one team is still fighting for qualification is strange regarding some of the other assignments for First group referees.
Di Bello and Nobre also in important games, where one could have expected Elite or at least top of First group referees, but not officials with no or only very little CL experience.

    1. The strange thing for both Collum and Bastien is that they got such games when almost very decisive and before they never got something that one could have assessed as very important for the groups, quite particular management, and I think it is made based on the names of the teams involved (clearly we don't see them for very big games under spotlights). At least with such assignment their belonging to Elite Category can be justified.
To follow, very important game for Schnyder under the eyes of Rosetti. Now you can easily understand why he moved away from Switzerland, because it was a Swiss referee to be assessed, so not possible in his country, or maybe closer :)
The Swiss can reach surely important goals, but again one should wonder about Schaerer, let's hope he will be back soon.
They are now trying to develop another Swiss referee.
An English referee for France - Gibraltar, even if belonging to low categories, seems too much, and I think that we rarely saw such assignments in past.

    2. Schärer is regularly appointed in Swiss Super League (gave a correct RC for SFP after 15 minutes this weekend for example). Strange not seeing him in UEFA

      Delete
    3. Refereeing in Swiss league doesn’t say everything, it is a lower intensity than Champions League. It happens regularly that referees have a light injury, but still work in their domestic league.

If Schärer is 100% fit, he would be appointed for sure. Let’s see.

    4. Hi with reference to Mr Collum he is excellent referee and deserves to get that the appointment.

      Delete
    5. Why is English referee unexpected for france v gibraltar?

      Delete
    6. Simply because this is a game which has zero impact regarding qualification. That would be a great chance for a 2nd category referee from a smaller federation to prove himself on international stage.

    7. France England Germany and Spain and maybe Holland and Belgium still have multi million euro players playing though so needs competence?

  4. SUIKOS could be a very rough game, I expected an Elite referee there, to be honest.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I don't know, sometimes it feels like the person who makes the appointments in the European clubs competitions is different to the one who makes the appointments for the games between countries. Maybe it is the case... It feels like completely different strategies applied. I am not talking stricltly about this matchday. Also at the start of campaignit it was this feeling. Some referees that don't get much in club competitions suddenly are trusted with important games when it comes to national teams. And some Elite referees looks like are sent to random games many times. I think you guess what I'm talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I saw Schaerer in domestic league. Lost season for him. Unfortunately long way to come back. He have to focus for new season. No risk.

    ReplyDelete
  7. How exactly in the game of Israel vs Romania there is a Swiss observer?when Swiss is in this group and basically looking at this game…

    ReplyDelete
  8. I never asked myself this question, but how is Gibraltar considered regarding English officials ? Gibraltar belongs to England (English Overseas Territory), so it seems quite strange that an English referee can be appointed on Gibraltar, or at least avoidable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's another reason for which I said it was an unexpected and strange appointment, never seen before, but we must admit that in modern football many unwritten rules have been broken about referee assignments.
We saw something similar in FIFA tournaments when officials from Tahiti, French Polynesia, were assigned to French national team in their competitions.

      Delete
    2. It belongs to Britain and is a British overseas territory, not England and English. Its a very important distinction.

Ultimately there is nothing like the historic and cultural ties between the UK nations with Gibraltar

  9. Brisard, Letexier and Watellier are today in Hungary for Israel-Romania (18/11) and then will have to fly all the way in Belfast for the game Northern Ireland-Denmark (20/11). The ARs and the 4th official are different. Interesting choice I might say. The first game is crucial, the second one has no stake at all.

  10. Bastien giving Armenia every soft foul he can, whilst failing to do anything about stamps on Welsh players. Superb from the Frenchman so far

    1. He gave a couple of erroneous freekicks but his performance in the first half was absolutely fine 👍.

  11. I don’t understand why Bebek give easy and unimportant match and Pairetto get decisive match, I mean with regularly Bebek now get UCL match as VAR is questionable for me to put Pairetto behind the VAR room in Riga.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can't reason only on VAR appointments in different games, comparing them, they are there mostly due to referee's nationality and other reasons, we never saw Bebek (CRO) with a Swiss referee, while very often we saw a Swiss referee with an Italian VAR. About Bebek, he is getting many games with referee from various nations so I think his assignments are absolutely OK, it can happen sometimes that he gets an unimportant game, as well as this happens to Italians as VARs.

      Delete
    2. Bebek obviously not given the game in Riga because he is Croatian :p

      Delete
    3. I know he’s Croatian but I mean why must Andorra vs Belarus :) and why must Pairetto, as we know him in Serie A.

      Delete
    4. I don't really see a problem tbh. Pairetto is absolutely good enough to do a job in Riga, and Swiss officials often worked with Italian VARs in the past. Maybe they could've found another VAR for AND-BLR who could've used that game as a way to gain experience, but then we also have to remember that referees get paid per game they do and I think Bebek would still prefer doing an unimportant game than no game at all

      Delete
    5. I prefer to use save name like Aureliano or I forgot the name of Italian VAR debutant in this round.

      Delete
    6. Aureliano, WCU20 cmiiw but use in useless match in Sweden

  12. I watched only first half and I was surprised by the mostly very easy going nature of the game, very fair. At least until 30' minute, in which something started to happen. In 20' a correct assessment of fair tackle on the ball, no penalty, close to AR1, in 30' in my opinion a very dangerous challenge, but with ball played at first, could have been punished by a YC, but one could understand referee's choice there, he was aware when he warned player. Then, I don't know what happened later, but I'm not surprised if the game has changed tone.

  13. Poor missed advantage from Bastien in crucial time

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. More unlucky than bad imo but it seemed to me he was ready, at first, to allow Armenia’s ‘idea’ for the restart position which would have been scandalous. Overall perfectly adequate and mostly good performance by Bastien in a not-so-remarkable match.

      Delete
    2. Agree more unlucky but I mean he was also lucky that Armenian already hopeless for their chance, I mean Armenian thrown away many chances to win the match, there were many shoot to the sky, so it was frustrated by theirself not by the referee.

      Delete
  14. Missing a crucial advantage late in the game isnt unlucky. Poor overall from Bastien whose foul detection is embarrassing

    ReplyDelete
  15. A quite deliberate late charging at 2’ on Brozović whistled just as a simple normal freekick by Schnyder should lead to a small cross in Rosetti’s notes. Hopefully that is not a sign of things to come!

  16. RC for GIB15 for SFP after OFR by Brooks, studs tackle with high force above the ankle on the French player who scored.

(I still don't understand why did Kavanagh intervenes (rightly!) for this one and then intervened to overturn Welch's RC in Women's Euro FRAITA)

    1. Another OFR for Brooks to give a PK for handball, very clear.

      https://dubz.live/c/d8a40b

      Delete
    2. RC I would say almost impossible to see for referee.
      Penalty for handball very clear.
Some good interventions by Kavanagh, to answer your question, I think we can easily say that he learned the lesson from that game with Rebecca Welch. It was a clear mistake to intervene for removing red card.
For Brooks, not a good presentation to have two VAR interventions in such a game, with a 7-0 score in first half, but still, many goals mean many attacks and so more can happen and more can be missed by referee, a discussion we already made in past on this blog. To me, at least handball should have been spotted live.

    3. The angle makes it very difficult to spot on pitch. Arm is more or less hidden for the referee, and far away for the assistants. Ref probably had an inclination, but did not have all the necessary details

      Delete
  17. Extremely tough match in Berlin. Great atmosphere and (very hot!) so far Frankowski does it well

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The referee made a scandalous mistake. Rudiger clearly pushed the Turkish player. It should have been a penalty and a red card.

      Delete
    2. He have to work for his body image. Look Marciniak and look this Polish ref (baby face), he have to show more power, look 53:30 min. He gave a public warning, but it looks like he order a beer 🍺 in a bar. He have to show more balls when he is angry like Marciniak in the World Cup final

      Delete
    3. For example, there was a clear foul before Germany's 2nd goal. The German broadcaster probably didn't send the necessary video footage to the VAR room (this happens a lot in German matches. For example Bayern-Galatasaray). Only the following interesting video of the position was shown on the screen. Even in this reverse image, the foot pushing is clearly visible.

      https://streamable.com/cxqvxm

The referee was in a good position for the penalty. Nevertheless, the penalty was only awarded with the help of VAR. Frankowski is clearly not at the level of these matches.

      Delete
    4. Please look 84 min. Again warning with 2 players. Totally not listening the ref. They don’t look to the ref. No respect to the ref.

Now big problems and yellow cards benches

    5. - Penalty position in the first half.

      - The referee's poor authority over the players.

    6. thanks for the links @anynymous. For me thats not a PK from Rudiger, as the attacker is never getting the ball and if anything he helps the striker by pushing him away from a collision with the GK.

  18. To Italian readers, may I know who is Valerio Marini, I forgot to ask, I never seen his name work as VAR before and maybe a debut for him in UEL last week.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He became VAR PRO one year ago, after having retired as referee (dismissed from serie A and B referees). As referee he hadn't reached too much in terms of serie A games (only a few appearances). A good development in recent times, with the chance to appear on international stage as well. In the early times as VAR PRO his main problem was to intervene too much even for situations that were not clear and obvious mistakes, now I think he fixed a bit this issue but he is still a VAR you can expect to intervene in borderline situations if compared to other VARs (especially Irrati, quite different style).

  19. 67:20 CLEAR PENALTY for Turkey. OFR, Frankowski, not best tonight. What is ass number 1 doing. After penalty mobbing/protest Germany players and no cards.

    1. Clear Penalty??? The ball touched defenders arm from 1 m distance and from behind, while he ran back to be ready to defend, he could not even see the ball. This Penalty was simply ridicolous.

  20. Another very brave straight RC decision for Letexier in Romania - Israel. He punished a SFP by Romanian player.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Letexier gave a very good immediate red card for SFP in Israel vs. Romania (perfect refereeing), but on the negative side lost his temper in one incident after a caution for dissent (+91’).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Little bit braver and Zahavi would have seen red.
This way, both letexier and Zahavi escaped troubles :D

      Delete
    2. But Zahavi deserves this red card…

      Delete
    3. The first half was not the best for Letexier, missed some fouls, one or two times poor communication with the AR, not impossing authority succesfully - he was not the referee that I know. But as soon as the second half started he raised his level to a true Elite. Absolutely correct RC for SFP. Overall a good night for the French, he has to improve what is not good enough yet and continue his journey to the top of the world.

      Delete
    4. And I don't have a problem with the way he managed the conflict with Zahavi. He did a short talk, showed YC, the player continued to protest so Letexier started a longer talk and explained the decision and gave an ultimatum to the player. He seemed a little bit angrier than usual bu it is ok, two YCs for dissent in 1 minute would have been too much, especially given the context of the game in that minute. He avoided headlines succesfully this way.

  22. Brooks made a third OFR in second half for offside matter, assessing a deflection (clear deflection) and so offside, disallowed goal.
Everything OK by Kavanagh from VAR room today. Maybe that's a news for English officiating, especially concerning VAR.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Brooks usually gets the big calls right, surprised by three OFR. He loves an OFR for offside. Third time in recent months for him for them.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Omg omg what a game. Very very difficult game. We can expect very very hard games Euro2024, the new generation Germany players are not so best as (old generation like Muller). The same with the German refs, after Brych, nobody is follow him. Only Zwayer is coming back step by step.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I just noticed Akil Howson, who is not a FIFA AR, is appointed to AR France vs Gibraltar. How common is it for non-FIFA ARs to be appointed to these matches?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not completely uncommon but not massively common either. The only non appointed FIFA AR currently in the PL is Hatzidakis who really shouldn't be on the list and Ian Hussin who is injured.

  26. Three remaining decisive matches between two teams, where winner will go to the euro:
    - Ukraine v Italy - ref: Gil Manzano
    - Slovenia v Kazakhstan - ref: Marciniak
    - Czech Republic v Moldova - ref: Scharer

What do you think, which match will be the most difficult for the ref?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have big big doubts with Scharer. His first game UEFA. He start not good in domestic league. Since march! No uefa game and now this important game. Fingers crossed

      Delete
    2. I agree, I find this truly incredible. Of course appointments are made beforehand, but given the standings in that group and the fact that Czech Republic had Poland away for their first match, it was very much possible that CZE-MOL was going to be a crucial game.

Knowing that Oliver, Vincic and Kovacs didn't get any matches. Also Soares Dias had a fairly easy match, maybe someone else was possible there. I would even have preferred someone like Mariani, Pinheiro or Peljto here, all without matches this round if I'm not mistaken. At least these guys have been active the last months.

Let's hope Schärer does well and can return to where he was a while ago.

    3. Im truly happy that CZE-MOL goes to Scharer. A relatively new and good ref who did really well before his injury and at least someone else then the (surely on this blog) overhyped referee grandpa Orsato. (Or any other pushed Italian for that matter.) UEFA needs new names if they still keep Makkelie and Taylor (unfairly) away from games of certain teams. They cant only rely on Manzano and Marciniak only.

      Delete
    4. Maybe you have to think why UEFA keep Makkelie away from bigger matches….. with this fantastic committee there is 0 doubt about there integrity. If you deserve you will get it
