DeleteInteresting to monitor the appointments of Makkelie and Vinčić so far this season. Both have done a Europa league final and are normally “on paper” logical names for a potential Champions League final.
ReplyDeleteWhat I notice so far:
- Vinčić whistled two big games in Champions League, but still early in competition (week 1 and 3) and therefore still quite sensible if you have bigger plans with him. In the Euro qualifiers, he whistled Romania-Israel and Ukraine-North Macedonia. Games that can be challenging on the pitch but definitely not in the spotlight.
- Makkelie quite similar, although they did not use him in PSG’s group. He’s regularly appointed with Italian teams in UCL and always assigned to eastern/Balkanic teams in the Euro qualifiers.
Curious if this pattern continues in Week 5-6 Champions League and the play-off rounds.
Welcome back Ovidiu !!!! very good news his return on the pitch at nation level. I still think that he will not have chance to attend Euro2024 as main referee but in any case his regular and smooth return is very positive. I hope that he will be choose as VAR.

We know pretty much who will qualify from groups A,F,G,J - it is only a matter about who will finish first and who will finish second.
ReplyDeleteIn the groups B,C,D it is pretty clear who will win the group and it is a fierce battle for the second place.
And finally in the groups E,G,H,I - nobody is sure of qualification yet, 3 or even 4 countries are in direct fight. Top referees expected there.
Why is makkelie always with Balkan countries?

So Pol Van Boekel totally out of Makkelie teams? With Dieperink in Indonesia and I mean what about his chance (Van Boekel) in Euro 2024, with Ruperti selected ahead than him? Do you think NED will send more than 3 VAR referees, maybe Dieperink, Manschot, Van Boekel, Ruperti?

DeleteVan Boekel has been the most controversial VAR since 2021.. He’s not feeling the game and cannot oversee ‘the big picture’. Always hiding behind a protocol.
Delete- Euro women final (Monzul), the VAR crew missed the handball
- WC Qatar, two questionable interventions in Vincic’ and Makkelie’s games. Even more strange that both referees were done after Groupstage and V.Boekel was rewarded with a QF…
- Inter vs Barcelona (Vincic) > v.Boekel missed a crucial handball
- Feyenoord-PSV (2022) > Gozubuyuk whistled a title deciding PK (handball) when nobody expected a Pk. Guess who stayed quiet…
- Chelsea-BVB (R16) > I guess the handball PK was in line with UEFA guidelines, but again, nobody expected a retake here. IMO no VAR-stuff
- EURO 2021 - imo he should’ve intervened in the semi (England-Denmark). Sure, there was a small contact, but initiated by attacker. When >90% expects no penalty, a decision is so crucial/decisive in a SF(!) and referee had no good view at all (made a call based on sensation), it is important to re-watch the incident. Also to sell the decision. A good example was the ‘re-refereeing’ intervention in Gil Manzano’s semi-final UCL last season. Maybe not in line with protocol, but praised and expected by football enthusiastics. Perhaps, v.Boekel didn’t make the intervention to “increase” his own chances to get the EURO final (as VAR with Kuipers’)…
I have the feeling that somebody from (Team??? Makkelie) try to kill Pol van Boekell. I think they can write what they want: van Boekel is like Irrati VAR experts for the UEFA and FIFA. I taste so much frustration from somebody……..

Instead all he did was cost himself place as a VAR with Kuipers. Van Boekel is a poor VAR. People go on about English VARs with Attwell and Kavanagh but other countries are just as bad if not worse.

DeleteFollowing a penalty appeal by Hungary in the early minutes, quite evident reaction a few later by Makkelie against a player who was complaining, very strong approach by the Dutch for this game, I think he is aware it can become very hot. About the appeal itself, you can whistle it but better decision to play on.

ReplyDeleteMakkelie with 5 cards in first half, it was indeed a very challenging game as referee expected, given his approach. You can see how much different he was from Napoli - Union Berlin, game that allowed him to keep a certain style.
ReplyDeleteThere were some moments of tension betweeen players, another penalty appeal by Hungary in 40' or 41', possible holdings but I think one can say not enough for being called by VAR and indeed no intervention. A goal was correctly allowed by AR2, good ONSIDE.
I think that second half will be very challenging as well.
For me this is a penalty. Missed by VAR. Why not call Makkelie to check double in this very crucial game.

I completely agree! An extremely challenging game, especially the 2nd half, but Makkelie was completely in control and very well accepted. Good advantage before the Hungarian equalizer and yes, probably one additional Yc for a holding should have been issued. But I echo M’s observation, a very strong performance today!

DeleteWell in my opinion this was a very good performance by Makkelie. Once again the first thing I want to underline is that he is a very able referee in changing his style, understanding the game before, and then during it. When you decide for a certain approch before, you can make a mistake, because we can't be sure about the future and what about to happen, well, at that point an intelligent referee can change his mind. Today Makkelie opted for being strict, the face he made to a player in the early minutes is rare by him, this means that he was aware he had to keep a certain approach, at least to see how the game would have developed. Many cards in first half, while the second half was maybe a bit less intense but still quite challenging for him. You can say that all cards are OK. Can't talk about a referee who didn't want to book players, and in such context you could have got a big blame for that, given the kind of game, indeed.
ReplyDeleteHe was mentally focused for the clash and he kept this attitude until the end. The no penalty decisions are OK for me, correcty by VAR to stay silent, good work by both assistant referees, and let me add, an attitude I can't find in other referees, even when it looks like he has missed something, a few later the possible correct decision follows, I think basically thank to teamwork. That's not common in other crews, I ifind that very smart.
Montenegro had a chance to qualify as they were winning, then Hungary with comeback and game ended without controversy, I think this was a very good spot for UEFA!

Not everyone had to have the same opinion. That’s why I like this blog. For me minimum one moment penalty situation it’s clear. Var Ruperti have to call for a OFR. And clear 1-2 yellow cards are not given. His team, 4th !!! Official have to help him, the rest was ok, nothing more
DeleteYou are absolutely free to have different opinion, I just like to explain why for me it wasn't VAR stuff. In first case, all is about intensity and referee saw the incident, inviting him would have been something against the protocol, even if you can give penalty (and I agree). Second incident, we see very often VAR interventions for holdings in recent times by UEFA, we also saw same VAR, Ruperti, calling Makkelie in Naples (rather a mistake for me) for disallowing that goal, so in case of evidence the Dutch from the VAR room would have surely intervened, as he seems a VAR with a certain approach. But all holdings analyzed in detail in my opinion were not significant for an OFR. Should have been more.

DeleteGuys, I am not convinced about the performance of Makkelie. It looks he is not himself like 2 years ago. He don’t smile, no contact with players (you remember player Emre Can Chelsea- Dortmund) hè talk about Makkelie that he don’t talk with players and that he is arrogant. Tonight I know what he mean. It looks he is stressed. Come one Makkelie!!! Try to come back please. Normally when players talking or shooting the ball after whistle he will not accept. Tonight 2 times he do nothing.

I think that in this game it was difficult to smile, he had to keep this approach for keeping a control, in a different game he would have had different relations with players, I don't say he had to be harsh, but to me today he was rather focused, I think you can't officiate a game always in the same manner. About the relations with players, I don't see particular changes as well, but of course that's my opinion. It is not from the smile you can say better or worse performance...

DeleteI didn’t see today’s game, but IIRC in Balkan games he always chose a strict line, a bit more distanced/arrogant instead of the players friend.
That’s the reason why I wrote this, this is not Makkelie from 2 years ago. And maybe it will never come back (unfortunately), but the passion, the energy, I am missing. It looks he is stressed. Hopefully he have the ambition to come back to the old level

To clarify - I switched from Lambrechts' game when Bulgaria went 1-2 up, and then reported this incident (which was a clear YC).

It should go without saying that I'm not against Makkelie (or any referee) at all. For instance, I very explicitly wrote a piece praising him in Summer/2022 on the blog, and you can even go back to Club World Cup in 2020 for another example, when as part of an editorial, I argued that he should be amongst the names in consideration for the Qatari WC final.

DeleteActually it was so interesting to see that during the game he was totally using his authority and players respected his style. And also noticed after the final whisle how he changed the mood and interacted with players even giving a small hug to one of the players. I think that just shows the brilliance of a true referee who can adapt his style, which is wonderful.
DeleteAnd at the same time I think Makkelie was very good with foul detection, but to my taste he gave away a few cheap cards. And after that he had to keep this line, that's why it was a stand-out mistake what Mikael mentioned as missing card as it was crystal clear and he gave YC for smaller offences. It was just my feeling that he could try to handle a game in the first half with less cards.
So did I just critizise and compliment and a referee at the same time? - so called "self-sarcasm" ;-)
Thanks Mikael for explaining. I was one the people noticing a lot negative posts from your side about Makkelie without (almost never) highlighting the positive, whereas I mostly read praise with regard to other refs (eg. Letexier, Turpin, Bastien, etc). I guess it’s just a style you like or don’t like and nothing personal or a bad 1st hand experience… ;-) And yes, we all have different preferences.

IMHO the better decision is a play on. Attacker slightly moves in front of the defender when both try to win the ball, resulting in a regular collision.
I don't think ever and Elite referee would give a penalty for such body vs. body contact especially with marginal extra force from defender. Totally correct decision to play on.

DeleteScotland - Norway: 100% correct penalty if ball touched arm. Very long check by VAR for that. It was possible defender had hit ball with another part of body, thank to a replay looks quite evident arm.
