  1. Normal appointments in group B, because Greece's chances are rather theoretical with Netherlands only needing one win out of their two remaining games.
BTW, three out of the last four France games handled by German referees.
Big game for Kruzliak, could be another direct duel for a EURO spot and is at least important in the remote duel with Wales.
Therefore also a very good game for Jug and surprising not to see an Elite referee there.
Massa and Stegemann make sense IMO in a group that could still have some tension, but could also be decided after MD9.
Kabakov is a strange choice in a meaningless game.

  2. Ok, I think that after this set of assignment we can draw a very important conclusion about Kružliak, it is now clear to me. Given how he has been appointed in recent times in many games, mostly crucial, he is a name for EURO 2024 for committee. In case of different idea, it would be impossible to see such multiple games, it is a classic path for a referee who is considered back after the extremely poor period. One can discuss whether still fully deserved or not. My opinion is: he did the best to ensure a decent form after the years in which he looked to be ready for demotion, but if we look at the real level of his officiating, one should say that something is still missing for a big call and he would have needed in case more time. Still, committee once at the big tournament, can find the game for him. I think he will be there (I take the risk of making such prediction).

    1. For me Kruzliak no candidate. I am sorry.

Especially that test he got on Tottenham vs Chelsea game!

    2. We won't see him, but he's also not the only ”big elite” without an appointment. Both Vincic and Turpin is also out, as well as other possible Euro candidates Nyberg, Peljto, Gözübüyük and Meler. This means nothing

    3. Jovanovic's situation is totally strange. This season he had only 5 games
      15 Aug: UCL Qualifyng
      03 Oct: UCL GS
      27 Oct: UAE PRO League
      05 Nov: Cypriot League

I can't find a valid explanation. It make sno sense whatsoever. At least he should have had more games in his domestic league.

    7. Regards to all. The data avaible on Transfermarkt and other sites specialized in data from the world of football are not the most accurate, as it says that Srdjan had only 5 matches this season (as someone mentioned in previous comments).

The mistake lies in the fact that there is an assistant referee in Montenegro, Srdjan Jovanović (Nikola Dabanović's assistant), so a good part of Serbian referee's matches this season were assigned to an assistant referee from Montenegro.

As for the international scene, I expect Srdjan in MD5 and MD6.

And yes, Jovanovic wasn't suspended from his own FA, that's bullshit :)

      Cheers!

  5. Matei's point about 'it seems different people write the appmnts for these qualifiers than CL' is ascertained by the assignment of Jug to Wales vs. Turkey. When we think about Bastien, Collum and so on it is an obvious strategy to use the more 'law-enforcer' style officials in these matches (even if they are a bit out of favour in Nyon atow).

Generally it seems a wise strategy to me.

  8. Massa, although not the best Italian referee - obviously ahead of him in terms of performance are Orsato, the n.1, Mariani, Maresca and the emerging Sozza - will be called up for the next European Championships. Even in the recent Lazio Roma Derby he suffered protests from Immobile, Mancini and the two coaches Sarri (the only one cautioned) and Mourinho who repeatedly shouted at him: "Non hai avuto le palle!" Italian slang for "you didn't have the courage..."
    Inexplicable

    1. To be honest I wouldn't be so harsh with Massa, it is true that he has a different styl than Orsato and the other Italian referees you mentioned, but in recent times he managed to change a bit his approach. Nevertheless, every now and then he is rather too lenient with such situations and he should do more. Hopefully he will do that. Because if we analyze him under the technical point of view (foul detection and disciplinary control) I think he is very good referee. He is just missing in being strong with players and coaches in some occasions, but I think this is related also to personal character.
We will see how things will go for him, seems sure he will attend EURO, after Velasco observation and important assignments in EURO Qualifiers. But I can't deny that is some missing abilities were from another referee and not Italy nr. 2, the things would have been different for the referee in question.. yes.. at the end we must admit that after Orsato he is the nr.2 for the country so this maybe is the element completing the analysis.

  9. Premier League referee appointments out for next weekend. Michael Oliver and Paul Tierney completely missing. Chris Kavanagh has been appointed to Manchester City vs Liverpool with Stuart Attwell as his VAR.

If UEFA continue to the same pattern of Michael Oliver in Matchday 1,3 and 5 and Taylor in 2,4,6 then he will come out of the cold having not refereed a match since Arsenal vs Burnley just before the international break. His AR1 (Stuart Burt) is acting as AVAR for Sheffield vs Bournemouth and his AR2 (Dan Cook) is on Championship duty in Saturday with Darren England.

Anthony Taylor (could be appointed in UCL) is appointed to Nottingham Forest vs Brighton with his normal assistants. This appointment hints at a midweek UCL appointment.

Stuart Attwell only has two VAR appointments this weekend, Saturday in Man City vs Liverpool and Monday in Fulham vs Wolves. Potentially stay overnight near Stockley Park and fly out from Heathrow to Nyon/Ground on Wednesday.

  12. Very soft penalty for Turkey, in my view plainly wrong. VAR should have intervened.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Phantom penalty by Jug again. he has form for this

    ReplyDelete
  14. There were also several penalty appeals by Wales, some situations definitely more penalty than the one whistled for Turkey.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As a Turk, penalty whistled was too soft. I believe none of the penalty appeals were correct. Matej Jug was not the ideal referee for this game. He had control issues. Some players from both teams were not playing fair game. He didn't pick up these. This game needed elite referee. Vincic could swap with Jug.

      Delete
  15. Very clear penalty for handball not whistled to Kosovo by Kabakov. Referee can miss the incident, but NO VAR intervention definitely without explanation. Arm above shoulder, ball coming from opponent. Even more strange from Bulgarian VAR after their intervention in Toulouse - Liverpool. To be honest the confusion we see with VAR is not so much acceptable and I must invite again UEFA to reflect about that. Based on VARs, all different decisions regarding crucial situations.

    1. That VAR official is awful, should never be allowed anywhere near this level again.

  16. Looks like Kruzliak had another good game, maybe not challenging and mostly fair, but definitely what he needed to gain further credit by committee. Very crucial final score for qualification, without controversy. And now lets wait where he will be appointed on MD5 or 6.

    1. I can confirm your impression. A good performance by Kružliak in a fair game, with an optimal line in foul detection IMO, one YC correctly given and all crucial situations solved accurately. He left a positive impression on me, seems he managed to confirm his restored form.

  17. Poorly managed game by Jug.

UEFA ashould have thought wiser and appoint some better ref cause his perofmance tonight eas all over the place.

Why I say that better ref was needd?
Group decider,Wales needed to win and Turkey wanted to mantain 2st place.

If Makkelie was appointed for game similar magnitude, then some ref with that wuality could have handled this match, someone like Kovacs or Zwayer or any other Elite ref, cause Elite was needed in this match.

    Why?
Problematic behaviour from both teams,we all know how temperamental Turkish are,but also Welsh players were very nervous and agressive, the fact that they were out of the tournament did not help.

Plenty fouls going unpunished,YC's given for some small details and at the same time clear YC's for even worse behaviour not given.

We saw 6 YC' in regular time,1 for soft penalty,1 for persistent fouling and 4 for unsportsmanlike behaviour...I think that says a lot.

Like I said, soft penalty and that also did not contribute to him keeping control.

After final whsitle, all hail broke loose(if that's the term)both teams had player that were pushing and shoving aand there we saw 3 YC's.

    1. This match was not important because Croatia won. Everyone knew that they were going to win comfortably. I watched the game carefully for 90 minutes. The Welsh players were very concentrated and started with a great tempo. But especially Wilson and Williams tried to get fouls dishonestly in the first minutes. Therefore the Welsh players lost the referee's trust. I hope that in the play-offs the Welsh players will concentrate only on the football and not on the referee. I also think that Makkelie is not one of UEFA's most trusted referees after the Real-PSG match.

    2. @M Look carefully and you'll see that the position is offside

    3. @Unknown yeah,1 0 win anc ouple of chances for ARM against CRO auggest that it was comfortable...

How can you say that match was not important????

If CRO loses,WAL wins, then WAL goes through...

Also,TUR wanted to be 1st in he group...

But ok,if you say that match was not important...

      Delete
    4. Wales - Turkey was very important as well, but Wales in case should have checked Croatia's score. It seems as the strategy by committee is to make the "major" appointment in the game that must ensure a certain score to allow then that in another game a team can qualify. So Croatia - Armenia before and then Wales - Turkey, but in reality the game between Wales and Turkey was important as well, because Croatia - Armenia could end X2. At the end these are exclusive choices they make and they think it is more likely to have Elite in a certain venue than in another, also the names of the teams, as said, play a role. For them, Jug was enough for Wales. One can discuss about this choice, I think, becase they could have easily assigned an Elite (I don't say in terms of performance shown by the Slovenian, but just as principle).

  19. I was thinking about the delayed appointments of Italian teams and the reason for that.

    1) The first option is already raised by Chefren. I can see a Spanish Elite referee in group C, Napoli-Braga (week 6), but before UEFA can make that decision it should be clear that Real Madrid is #1 in the group. If Napoli wins vs Real next week, “theoretically” they can still top their group. Impossible to see a Spanish in that case.

    2) In Group E and F, the main question is whether the groups are still open in the final round.
    - If Lazio and Atlético both win their games next week, they are qualified, and the remaining game between these temperamental teams is “just” a battle for first place. Such games are good opportunities for a new Elite, eg. Nyberg or Peljto, however if Atlético loses/draws against Feyenoord, the Atlético vs Lazio (week 6) game will be crucial for qualification and you need Turpin. I can’t see any other name than him.
    - In group F the same situation. If Milan and Newcastle both lose their game next week, their final game is just a battle for 3rd place and that probably does not require a top Elite, whereas an experienced head is always expected in BVB-PSG.

    3) One final argument is that some Elite referees will be used twice. For instance Nyberg, Kovacs and Vincic can work in all groups. It is possible that they will work in week 5 and 6.

    1. In short, the treatment of Italian teams can be “justified” based on the standings in the group, however Group B is also a very open group. For clubs like Lens and PSV, qualification to R16 is just as important as for Italian clubs. UEFA must treat them seriously and equally as well. So, I am curious which referees will be assigned to PSV and Lens in MD5-MD6.

      Delete
    2. You are right in this analysis, not all groups are in the same situation of the ones with Italian teams, so under this point of view the management by committee couldn't be criticized too much, but there is at least another group with quite similar situation and you mentioned it, let me add Lens from France has been treated absolutely in a different way on past matchdays, with mostly Category 1. They would have never made that with an Italian team, now we will see whether when decisive for qualification, this will change (I think so).
Again, I already said that: committee is fully entitled to make particular choices for different groups and teams, since they are there for that, but hopefully they will treat all teams in the same manner.- This didn't happen in EURO qualifiers for national teams, as we saw. We can never imagine, given how they are appointed, Collum, Bastien, Jug and so on getting decisive games in Champions League!
Still about Italian teams, we must observe that a game like Napoli - Braga at moment is still impossible to read, because in case of certain scores on MD5, it could be not important for qualification (but rather, it will be).
Very curious to see how they will appoint Gil Manzano after Monday's game and the appointment for Shakhtar in Champions League seems to be already done... they can qualify...

  20. Chefren, prediction for UCL MD5?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I see that in group A Spanish referees are possible, a group without Spanish teams still without Spanish assignments.
Maybe we will have Gil Manzano here and Hernandez Hernandez in the other game?
In Group B, as said above, both games are important, it will be interesting to see appointment for Arsenal - Lens. Even Sevilla with 2 points, in the other game, seems to have stil chances for qualification. Arsenal - Lens Orsato? He officiated exactly the other game in the same group, PSV - Sevilla some matchdays ago. But also Sevilla assignment is important.
About group C, Real Madrid - Napoli seems quite flexible assignment, because Spanish team is sure of qualification, and it is only about first or second place, at the same time, maybe not the game that Italian team dreams to win. The appointment can be particular (not 100% crucial match with immediate effect), maybe Gozubuyuk, or a good test for an Elite who needs still development. The observer says us regular Elite, maybe even experienced, but we will see.
Braga - Union Berlin last chance for Portuguese side, maybe for some aspects more important than Real - Napoli. Here I would see a standard Elite referee, English choice is possible because not involving Italian team. Taylor?
In Group D all is decided you can expect a debut with Kuipers as observer in Real Sociedad game, I would say Strukan, but after his mistakes maybe less likely.
The other game with Italian team (you see very rare, almost never debuts with Italian teams in CL) can be a Category 1 or Low Elite as well. But sounds more sonorous on paper, Benfica - Inter. For example committee could give a game to Sidiropoulos if they want to gift him with a CL. The Israeli observer seems to suggest something like that, even Kulbakov possible.
In Group E we have definitly important games, one could say Celtic the more flexible team for assignments, but still ver hot atmosphere with them. Maybe Turpin can appear here, as we saw only Letexier as French referee in this group. In case even double French assignment is possible, with Letexier for Lazio and Turpin for the game with Feyenoord that was officiate by Letexier on previous matchdays. This is an option.
And here we go with the most challenging group again... group F. Medina Cantalejo and Pedersen mean very experienced Elite referees without a real observation by committe and, given the games, we can't have doubts. I just hope we will not see another referee who was already here. I see Makkelie open option for such group, he can go in Milan, I don't think that PSG in the other match is a problem. Then in PSG - Newcastle why not Peljto after very good games, but definitely I wouldn't put my hand on fire for this prediction... it is always difficult with PSG. Italian, French, German, English referees are not possible, we have always the same issue here.
Group G the easiest for committee to make assignments, but the observers seem to suggest something a bit different. Again here all "low" names inside Elite, if not debuts from Cat. 1, are possible: Sidiropoulos, Collum, Greenfield (if available), even Karasev on paper, yes.
And then last group, H: Rosetti in Shakhtar game. Very interesting choice, as discussed, maybe an Elite to be assessed for sometihng more (EURO) and there are some options for that, even Stieler. They play against a weak team, 0 points, this should be a factor for the assignment, but at the same time you have Gil Manzano story.. we will see. Basically the idea can be the German referee, on the road to EURO 2024. Barcelona - Porto, Zwayer would then suit with observer and importance of the game.
We will see how many right things I predicted, starting from Sunday in the morning, I'm not too much convinced :)

    2. Sorry, making an analysis based merely on the groups, I forgot that Marciniak must be on MD5, since then after that he will leave for Club World Cup. So which game for him? First option to me Lens group, he can be there indeed, with maybe Orsato, as I said in the other game.

      Delete
    3. Most predictable option for Marciniak seems PSG-Newcastle. He refereed the opposite game in MD2. It is sensible given the standings, but at the same time it would also confirm how PSG is treated at the moment (along with Slovenia, Italy and Italian teams…).

I predicted two Italian referees in Group B next week and I would be pleasantly surprised to read Orsato’s name there, however based on how Lens has been treated so far and the observer names (Garibian and Vassaras), I’m more leaning towards Guida and Massa.
Vassaras to observe a borderline EURO-referee?

      Delete
    4. With the possible appointment of Marciniak in PSG - Newcastle, committee would admit to have only two or three referees for that group, I hope this will not happen, but still.... for this reason my prediction was the other group.
But in case of Marciniak appointment we could say that given the circumstance the choice is not made exclusively for PSG, just a very poor managment by committee, not finding other options. Including the previous games of the Polish, it is still hard to believe that in a so good form, he will officiate only three games in CL GS.

  21. Any chance to see Schärer again in UCL after his comeback in the EURO qualifiers? Before his injury I saw him as a candidate for the EURO, but without any appointments in UCL I think it is not very likely.

    1. We can just eagerly wait for CL assignments, impossible to answer. After the match in Czech Republic, crucial for qualification, one could have different ideas about saying "impossible" to a CL assignment, but still... in case Rosetti in Shakhtar for hin, given also that Ukrainian side plays against the bottom of the group with 0 points? Would be the second Swiss observartion for Rosetti in a few time, after the one in Latvia, this makes it less likely, but still possible.
