The new trend by Rosetti is now clear. With Collina, such appointments wouldn't have been made. Taking some "risks" and accelerating the process for having new names to officiate in Champions League is definitely some good.
ReplyDeleteWe had been already informed about Grinfeeld by our reader, but Treimanis and Raczkowski are really unexpected there. The Latvian has for sure convinced the committee, I remember that some years ago he was observed by Rosetti, when the latter was still a normal observer, so for sure not an unknown referee for Rosetti.
Aboout the rest, Karasev with a low profile game, he must recover, while Královec is still on focus for something interesting.
I am happy to see new names in CL, Cakir and Brych at every match was a bit boring :D :D
DeleteShakhtar D - Hoffenheim
ReplyDeleteJacob Kehlet debut in UCL group stage.
Olympique Lyonnais - Shakhtar D
Andris Treimanis debut in UCL group stage.
Really :) ?
Indeed, the group with Shakhtar has been identified by committee as suitable for debuts. I don't think that it is specifically due to Shakhtar, but it is a global speech about all the four teams, compared to other groups.
DeleteSame with Aek. Del Cerro Grande and Grinfeeld both made their debuts in first two games of Aek
DeleteI think that it's time for UEFA to take some big decisions. We all discussed the last 2 seasons that on the K.O. round we saw the same referees appointed again and again. That happened because, on paper, the Elite group has 27 referees. However, the real Elite is 10-12 names.
ReplyDeleteSo, IMO, Rosetti should bring fresh blood to the Elite and demote those who have reached their peak.
With that said, it's very refreshing to read the names of Treimanis (a really talented referee) and Raczkowski. Not so sure about Grinfeeld as he didn't convince me at a UCL Q. this summer.
I agree, Grinfeld didn't really show to be a referee with skills for CL in Thessaloniki.
DeleteStill, of course, good luck to all three debutants on Tuesday.
I wonder if we can expect any other surprising names tomorrow.
IMO, UEFA is underestimating the significance of United - Valencia... I would have never expected a first group here. It is, a priori, a very important match for qualification in the group. Hope Vincic doesn't have any trouble, but match will be hot, specially considering how both teams are at the moment in their respective leagues.
ReplyDeleteI was expecting Skomina or Mazic in this match
DeleteOne could have easily switched Vinčič and Karasev, for example.
DeleteBut the form of the Russian is not the best at moment...
I hope Vincic will prove he is able to handle big games and will be promoted at the end. He really deserves that!
Delete@Vlad, I agree 👍.
DeleteI was also expecting Mazic there. With Mourinho being so questioned and losing so many matches, and Valencia having just won yesterday for the first time + the precedent in Valencia - Juventus (which was a very challenging match), the appointment looks to me more than risky. It is nice to give opportunities to FG in UCL, but there are other matches which are more appropriate. For instance, Skomina's. It would have made more sense to me to see Skomina in the UK and Vincic in Germany.
DeleteOf course, all of this is "on the paper". Maybe later United-Valencia is less challenging than Hoffenheim-City.
Are we expecting any more debutants on Wednesday? Possibilities in Moscow, Paris, Madrid and Oporto for sure. Although I would expect to see Taylor and Oliver in either Group A or D.
ReplyDeleteGözübüyük will be in CL on Wednesday.
DeleteIs that a prediction or a confirmed appointment, Andrea?
DeleteHe has a good match in Holland, with his regular assistants. It seems possible.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteNapoli - Liverpool:
ReplyDelete1) Zwayer?
2) Kassai?
3) Soares Dias?
I don't see other names there.
When I was scrolling down the appointments and saw no Vincic in Skomina's team my first thought was that he was removed because of OLY-BUR. A huge (positive) surprise for me TBH.
ReplyDeleteWho's the ref of Napoli vs Liverpool?
DeleteI predict mazic for spurs barca and zwayer for napoli liverpool.
ReplyDeleteFor Wednesday, here the remaining Elite officials still without appointments so far in both group stages (CL and EL): Kassai, Zwayer, Soares Dias, Taylor, Oliver, Mazic. So if all will be in CL, we will have two referees from Category 1.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Taylor and Oliver will appear in the same group, A and D are both suitable.
What about Kulbakou, how do you think?
DeleteMaybe he is in charge of a game... let's see.
DeleteCan we expect Halis Ozkahya? He is not my favorite but checking the other names having their debut, he might be possible.
DeleteKulbakou is in Dortmund!!!!!!!!🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
DeleteVery nice appointment for Hategan
ReplyDeleteStart for SUPERCUP in Istanbul 2019
O.T.
ReplyDeleteAs you reported in the upper right side of this blog, I would like to remember Luigi Agnolin, who has passed away last Saturday, after a long sickness.
It has been one of the best FIFA referee in the 80s and IMO one of the best referees in the history of the football. He was appointed in two FIFA world cup (at Mexico 1986 he was elected as best referee of the tournament even if he officiated the semifinal and not the final match) and Champion League final in 1988.
Great referee and very serious and fare man. Rest in Peace
Zwayer has CL match on Wednesday between Tottenham Hotspur against FC Barcelona.
ReplyDeleteGözübüyük is in EL on Thursday in the match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Lazio Roma.
ReplyDeleteOT:

For what it's worth, I thought Hernandez was absolutely excellent in SEV-RLM (I only watched 1H though).
DeleteHe showed a referee (much) mature beyond his age, IMO.
I disagree… I think Valencia - Barcelona is a bigger match. Of course, basque derby is good too, but a step below, IMO.
DeleteBasque derby turns out always very challenging match,so big match for Hernandez to handle.
DeleteGood ONSIDE by AR1 for Hoffenheim 1-0 goal.
ReplyDeleteNow the game will turn for sure more challenging for Skomina and his crew.

Minute 49' in Juventus - Young Boys, it is reported that Karasev missed a clear penalty in favor of Juventus, however I didn't watch the incident. We will check a video soon.
ReplyDeleteYes, I can confirm, I'm watching the game. The game is fairly easy to referee and Karasev is overall doing a good job, but it's always those key match incidents with him...
DeleteYes, clear penalty missed (foul on Dybala)
ReplyDeleteShocking challenge by Walker and Skomina had missed the foul!
ReplyDeleteFourth official informed him about a YC to be issued, but sorry that's unacceptable...
Seems like Skomina misread that challenge completely - on replay looks like a RC for SFP should have been issued
Delete... and we could discuss about RC here. For me yes.
DeleteI quite agree Andrasch, Walker lunges into his opponent with speed, studs making contact above the ankle with intensity. Endangers safety of opponent, RC imo
DeleteThats a RC for sure. Even without the replay it looked clear.
ReplyDeleteWhat a penalty for Man City !!! Unacceptable...
ReplyDeleteAnd now Skomina missed a PK after Baumann ag. Sane...
ReplyDeleteClear missed penalty by Skomina, I'm sorry this is an extremely poor performance by Slovenian crew. He looked clearly unsure about what to do and he looked for a help by AAR1, but the incident had occurred on the other side of penalty area, he should have assessed it!
ReplyDeleteI already count two crucial mistakes there.
To add, if not penalty, you must whistle simulation there.
No sense to indicate a goal kick.
He's quite "lazy" tonight. He isn't very mobile.
ReplyDeleteYes exactly, an old version of Skomina that I definitely don't like to see again... a pity. A referee with a so great experience.
DeleteSane was looking for the contact and went down easy when he could have skipped over the challenge. I thought no pen was supportable. Although, if you think it is a dive you must give a YC. Just standing there unsure is weak refereeing!
DeletePenalty incident in Juventus - Young Boys
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/3bj7v
It's about everything tonight. No consistent foul detection, bad positioning, very bad bidy language, and 2 crucial mistakes so far. I have never seen Skomina in such a bad shape... anyone remembering him like that? Really sad.
ReplyDeleteHoffenheim vs Man. City
ReplyDeleteReckless vs SFP

Penalty incident, goalkeeper's intervention
https://streamable.com/cxwsv
For me, a yellow card is not completly wrong.
DeleteThank you for all the videos you are posting.
DeleteClear that we have two crucial mistakes there: RC and penalty.
My view: penalty should've been given but I think he will be backed by observer regarding Walker's tackle. Bent leg, contact made by top of the shoe.
DeleteClear penalty and even maybe YC for DOGSO, what shock me the most is that Skomina doesn't even accelerate to be in good position
Delete@Vlad this is in my opinion always RC...
DeleteBeen in the stadium, overall, not a good performance by Skomina, especially no clear line in his disciplinary control. More a pk than not for me and it was shocking that he didn't even whistle Walker's foul at first. Stonewall RC.
DeleteSad to see Skomina again with bad game. Seems like he lost motivation after he lost CL final..
ReplyDeleteI turned on the TV earlier, just as they were showing replays of a challenge by a Young Boys player in the 72nd minute. It looked like possible SFP but play was restarted with an indirect free kick - anyone else see it?
ReplyDeleteGood decision to play-on after penalty appeal from MUTD players in 6min
ReplyDeleteAgreed, correct decision.
DeleteGood work by AR1 Klančnik until now also.
Vincic is at the moment in full control of the game. However, card criteria has not been the same for both teams in the first half, with at least 3 warnings to United players, with at least 1 YC missed for a reckless foul on Guedes, and 3 straight YC to Valencia, with no warnings (although the cards are correct).
ReplyDeleteI agree, no decisions technically wrong in the LOTG, but it would have been wise to sort one YC for Manchester United. He should be careful to not irritate Valencia toooo much where it could be avoided.
DeleteVinčič is staying right in the background, no real need for a bigger prevention (yet).
Benfica had a player sent off just before HT. Any footage?
ReplyDeleteCorrect decision by Grinfeeld. A quite clear second YC.
DeleteThanks, I missed it. Had to switch off the laptop just before half time xD
DeleteSeems quite clear. Good from Grinfeld.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dohx7cMW0AAXQpF.jpg
It's a 2nd YC for a reckless challenge.
DeleteI do not agree, the player AEK ran out from behind after the player Benfica started moving his leg.
DeleteOrel Grinfeld with controversial YCs, incl. the one that became the second for Benfica player. But he presented them calmly and convincingly.
ReplyDeleteNow, before 2: 2 missed offside.
DeleteCorrectly disallowed goal by AR2 in Lyon.
ReplyDeleteClear missed YC to a Ajax player after 61 minutes: blatant holding and SPA. Also, in terms of body language I don't like the way Kralovec communicated.
ReplyDeleteExcellent onside by Grinfeld's AR2 in AEK goal.
ReplyDeleteGood reaction on dissent now by Kralovec (YC for kicking the ball away), however: the dissent was totally correct. Total phantom foul.
ReplyDeleteGreat job by Polish assistant referees in Rome. Excellent onside by Michał Obukowicz at 1-0 and great offside caught by Tomasz Listkiewicz at 5-0.
ReplyDeleteWhat is wrong with Kralovec? Totally insecure performance
ReplyDeleteI only saw the last 35 minutes, but I wasn't impressed. He didn't look like a very experienced elite referee. No big mistakes, but nothing extra. At best.
DeleteHategan has sent off CSKA keeper, maybe for time wasting?
ReplyDeleteVery brave decision, he also added further time to be recovered.
*I meant, 2 consecutive YC.
DeleteOne for time wasting and another because because he said something to Hategan
DeleteAbsolutely brave and well done by Hategan! Akinfeev must not shout like that at the referee, and to do so once he's beeing booked is simply stupid by him. Excellent decision by Hategan in my view!
DeleteStupid decision ( I’m sorry but I don’t have another words)
DeleteGive the final whistle and that’s it
Hațegan gave a circus after the added time. Awful.
DeleteNot a stupid decision, a change had to be make and there was some confusion about CSKA having done already 3 substitutions.
DeleteBoth yellow cards were for protests. Akinfeev said something to Hategan immediatly AFTER the 1st yellow card. The consequence was the 2nd yellow card.
DeleteBoth cards were in 90+5 (Hategan awarded 4 minutes of ET but gave some seconds extra for an interruption of the game in the extratime). It was a big stupidity of Akinfeev because Hategan was already prepare for final whistle...
@quilava
Deletethe confusion was about the number of the player who was substitued by the gk (after the red card) and the fact that the (young) gk wanted to enter on the pitch before Oblyakov was out of the pitch.
The referee must see everything, but not hear everything, if you know what I mean.
DeleteFor this two yellow is too much
Anyway, I have the feeling that he did it also to impress the observer, it was a good chance to take an unpopular but fully correct decision without risk of facing consequences in terms of outcome of the match.
DeleteVery few referees would have the b***s of issuing 2 consecutive YC in an identic situation in minute 20, probably most of referees would have issued a single YC and after the 2 dissent gesture a verbal warning like "shut up or you're getting out!"
@Ranel
DeleteAmen.
Refereeing is not just applying the Laws of the Game.
Of course this is brave decision, of course it is correct decision but it's not smart decision.
World class decision and a great message for the beginning of the tournament.
Delete@victor
Delete100% agree. The only explanation for 2nd yellow card is that Akinfeev used some bad words (he swear) after the 1st yellow card. Neither referee should accept that...
Overall very good performance of Hategan. What I like most is the fact he showed he has "balls"
Yes, he showed the world today that you don’t mess with him.
DeleteDid Hategan sent off madrid' goalkepear like this so easy? I think NEVER
DeleteVinčič doing well in a challenging game at Old Trafford. Card count starting to increase but all justified and help enforce referee's authority in the match
ReplyDeleteAgreed, he did a good job in this match.
DeleteFormat of match where referee can lose a lot more credits than he can win, but Vinčič did well especially in the second half where the atmosphere on the pitch suited to him more. Full concentration, very good running especially his wide diagonal, and a word for his very good assistant referees.
In my opinion, another step towards Elite Category for the Slovenian.
Well, seems like every single referee in 21:00 CET matches had at least a satisfactory/expected performance. That's great when 3 of them are making their debut...
ReplyDeleteVincic didn't do too well tonight. No clear line, card management was not good enough (several fouls and actions could have been YC, with 1 missed YC on the first half and a highly recommended one in the second for Fellaini, who made two holding fouls in a very short time) and the criteria was not the same for both teams. However, some good things are that he correctly spotted a foul outside the penalty area which was really close. Maybe a missed penalty for holding in the last minutes, but I think no penalty was supportable.
ReplyDelete"some good things are that he correctly spotted a foul outside the penalty area which was really close"
DeleteWell, that's really "some "... inside/outside decision is "some things"
Yes, instead of "some" I should have used "one", or written more things. Forgive me, it's late. It is indeed an important decision.

A very good match also for Orel Grinfeld in Athens. Very challenging game and I would dare to say that he was in terms of communication like Lahoz
ReplyDeleteFully agree with you! Excellent communication, body language and player management. Good positioning and self-confidence. He could be in the beginning of a great career.
DeleteGood performance from the polish crew in Rome. Maybe some minor mistakes but in the end a good management. I was at the stadium and I liked his distance from the play, he was always near the action. Actually it was not a very challenging match as all players had a very good behaviour and there were not many important decisions to take. Correct right offside on Fazio’s 5-0
ReplyDeleteGood debut!
ReplyDeleteOctober 11, 2018
Turkey-Bosnia-Herzegovina Friendly Match
Referee: Sergei Karasev
Has anyone watched Treimanis? Any comments on his performance?
ReplyDeleteNo big problems, convincing, may be a bit nervous in the begin, but then clear decisions, good comunication, not always a clear line, but absolutely okay!
DeleteI try to make a short summary, based also on your comments:
ReplyDeleteHoffenheim - M. City
Definitely the worst performance of this set of games, with two clear crucial mistakes and Skomina looking out of form.
Juventus - YB Bern
Overall a not difficult game for Karasev. A correct sending off for second YC, but a big mistake in a quite easy situation to read: missed penalty to Juventus.
Bayern - Ajax
Maybe overall expected level but not so much convincing performance by Kralovec, given also his potential and experience.
AEK Athens - Benfica
I think second YC at the end of first half is a correct decision. There was a penalty appeal by AEK when score was still 2-2, I didn't rewatch it. Some users have reported a missed offside before a goal scored but I have not proofs of that. The same AR2 with a correct flag disallowing a goal, if I remember correctly. However, I think overall OKAYISH considering that it was his CL debut.
O. Lyonnais - Shakhtar
A correctly disallowed goal by AR2, I think for the rest expected level in a good debut by Latvian crew in CL.
CSKA Moskva - Real Madrid
An expected level by Hategan, one can discuss about the management of the last minutes, but nothing extra-ordinary there.
Roma - Viktoria Plzeň
Good CL debut for the Polish crew. Some situations in which referee can be backed, maybe a potential penalty, but for sure nobody will question about that. To be rewatch in a more challenging context.
Manchester United - Valencia
Here some readers disagree each other, however the classic performance that you can mark as expected level, and, according to a subjective opinion, you can assess it as more or less good, but basically OK.
Thanks for these summaries!
DeleteI cut some situations from highlights show that weren't already posted
Karasev (JUV-YB)
https://streamable.com/iqhff (2nd YC, including 1st caution)
Grinfeld (AEK-BEN)
https://streamable.com/zwrsw (Management?)
https://streamable.com/1kh1x (2nd YC)
https://streamable.com/u0ba9 (Offside? AR2 Hassan)
Hațegan (CSKA-RLM)

Vinčič (MNU-VAL)

For me Grinfeeld much more than okay, in the critical sit.you mention I follow him completely, the maybe-offside was none, if we refuse to discuss about maybe 2cm and we should do so - but his skills, as mentioned above, showed his great and outstanding talent: Communication, player management, body language, postioning, braveness. He was fully accepted by the players even in difficult situations - always the best sign.
