Interesting appointment for Kassai,maybe another (the last) chance for him for something big? I hope he can recover, he has been top referee for years but many, manu issues and troubles in his long career...

I really really hope that Kassai is doing well, because when he is, we all know that he is in top-form. I mean we all remember GER-ITA at Euro 2016 and no-one expected THIS comeback, delivering the probably best officiating at the tournament. Even after that, he's had good games, for instance TUR-CRO last year: despite missing an obvious penalty, he's shown a very strong personality and he's been an excellent game manager. I hope that is the Kassai that we will see in Naples on Wednesday.
DeleteHaving said that, I think Kulbakov is really ready for a promotion to Elite. I think he really deserves it, having already officiated Benfica-Fenerbahce this year in CL qualifiers. Uilenberg being present in Dortmund might indicate that in case of a good performance, he might get his spot in Elite in December/January.
Excellent game for Zwayer, too. As you have already mentioned, an important game for Kulbakov in front of Jaap Uilenberg, which indicates that the Committee observes him very closely.

Karasev blew quickly for a foul and I was expecting a card but he awarded an indirect free kick, despite it looking like there was contact with the other player. Do you think VAR would have asked him to review the incident?

DeleteIf there is a contact, the referee has two options: softer one - yellow card and harsher one - red card. Direct free kick should have been awarded.
DeleteIf there is no contact, the referee should assess if Juve player deliberately avoided it. If yes, still both cards are possible as the tackle would be classified as 'try to kick an opponent'. The referee should determine the nature of the tackle. Reckless or excessive force used. Again, a direct free kick should have been awarded.
In case Hoarau just missed his opponent and didn't touch him at all, it must be classified as dangerous play. Indirect free kick and possible YC for unsporting behaviour in order to punish the character of an offense.
In a nutshell, as the tackling player is out of control, both legs are off the ground, in case of any contact or Juve player deliberately avoiding contact it should've been a direct free kick and red card for serious foul play. In case of no contact at all, it's an indirect free kick and YC for unsporting behaviour. There is no possibility to issue a red card then.
You see it's complicated and not easy to decide on the pitch.

DeleteIn my opinion gol is not regular. Not only some Liverpool's players, but I would dare to say even Avram himself was not 100% sure which was the "main" ball there... for sure a mismanagement leading to a goal. This could have been solved by stopping the game.
DeleteTechnically it was only two balls on the pitch as the player at the halfway line hadn't taken the throw-in yet. The ball beside the referee may have confused a couple of players but those who ended up in the penalty area were playing on normally, and crucially so was the AR. Plus, look at the reaction of the Liverpool defenders.
DeleteThe LOTG say the referee must "allow play to continue if it does not interfere with play" - so long as the thrown-in was taken from the correct place I would say it is a goal.

41': I think missed YC by Kassai. A clear holding stopped a potentially dangerous counterattack. Albiol was lucky to escape without a card there and he stopped the opponent.

ReplyDeleteI'd prefer Lamela's YC to be a RC. It's a deliberate arm to the head with no attempt to play the ball. If this action had been to the face, rather than to the back of the head, it would be a clear RC for VC.

DeleteIt is a difficult one, but I would expect the AR at this level, especially Djurdjevic who was one of the best AR in last UCL season, to raise the flag. In addition, movement of players was not so difficult to spot the offside. It should not be seen as crucial mistake as the goal was not scored directly from an offside position.

Zwayer struggle a little bit with foul detection in my opinion. But I must admit it's not easy because Barca players overreact some contacts, while Spurs players play very rough sometimes. To my taste he should be a little bit more authoritative, bit more alert.

In Mazic's, there are not three covering defenders at the moment of the handling. There is barely one. That's DOGSO.
Strike in the head while not fighting for the ball is a red card whatever force will be used (unless it's a 'peck on the cheek') nowadays.

I simply disagree on the Inter/PSV situation. It would take a split second for a professional player to change trajectory and possess that ball. We see that move--where a player pushes the ball around one side of the defender and rounds him on the other--all the time. This would have very likely have resulted in a goal and, at the least, was an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Saying otherwise defies reality for me.

Apart from that, one could say OK performance by the Hungarian. AR1 was better than AR2 in terms of offside decisions, both were quite busy.
Good performance from Kruzliak in Madrid, but he sometimes struggled in positioning, intervened in the play at least twice.

Thank to the videos posted by Vlad, we can say that Taylor was OK at least regarding crucial decisions, some penalty appeals, but the English had his arguments to play on.
Atlético Madrid - Brugge
A positive impression was reported by several readers there, with a small point for improvement regarding positioning.
Borussia Dortmund - Monaco
Expected level for Kulbakov with one crucial decision correctly taken and a missed YC. Good performance by assistant referees as well.
Tottenham - Barcelona
Based on the clips you have posted, I assume expected level for Zwayer, points for discussion regarding the possible RC to Lamela, but personally I would back referee.
Napoli - Liverpool
Maybe one or two missed cards, but sometimes this is Kassai's style, asbsolutely no problems in terms of control. Both assistant referees very challenged.
Porto - Galatasaray
Only one comment about this game, at the end of first half it was reported a full control by Oliver. I think nothing extra-ordinary happened until the end.
PSV - Inter
For sure the most difficult game of the day, in terms of decisions. Handanovic situation is very controversial, my feeling is that RC should have been issued but maybe the Serbian will be supported there. We are quite far away, in any case, from a clear "crucial mistake".
AR1 with a tight offside missed, but that's VAR stuff as well...
@Porto-Galatasaray Oliver missed this. He wasn't brave like last year (RMAD-JUV)..

ReplyDeleteIn general I congratulate Rosetti and comission for being brave enough to give many new talents the chance to prove their abilities on a higher level. And in nearly all of those games the ref's were at least on an acceptable level. The problems came from the older ones - esp. Skomina was a bad surprise. And Mazic/Kralovec under their normal level. But I was really impressed by many of the new faces making big steps into Elite. Well done!
