  1. Very nice that committee found the way to give Undiano Mallenco another appointment in CL, even though as fourth official.
Mateu Lahoz could have been expected after the absence from Spanish assignments... he has a committee member, in case of good performance a candidate for a final? To be checked what will happen to Barcelona in CL and Valencia in EL.
Maybe too much time has passed since the last Spanish assignment for a final, and that's another factor.

    1. Yes, EL would be possible for him. Also the Nations League final might be an option.

    2. Turpin, Makkelie or even Orsato would deserve the EL final more than Mateu IMO.

      Delete
    3. I agree about Turpin.
Makkelie has not enough experience IMO (but might be used as VAR in one of the finals). Orsato has the problem, that most likely Rocchi will be chosen before him, if any Italian gets a final.

    4. If experience is a criterium for deserving a final Turpin doesn’t yet deserve a EL final either. Then many candidates are in front of him as well. If performance over a longer period is a criterium Makkelie deserves a EL final at least as much as, actually even more than Turpin. Orsato for me should not even be an option. In my opinion Rocchi should be appointed this year.

  4. Mateu in first leg as expected, Kuipers is very likely for tomorrow.

  5. Tomorrow in my opinion almost no doubts that Kuipers name will appear for Barcelona - Liverpool first leg.

    1. The only reason not to appoint him would be a plan to give him the final. ;)

  6. A good and solid first half by Federico La Penna in Frosinone against Napoli.Solid foul detecion, excellent body language and full acceptance. One correct YC given (45', Frosinone) for a foul play. The crucial decision was the free kick before the 0-1 for Napoli but in my opinion correct to give the foul because of a push in the back.

    1. In my opinion wrong free kick leading to 0-1, not enough to whistle.

    2. Another solid half by Federico La Penna in Frosinone vs. Napoli.Three correct YCs given but sometimes a bit too strict foul detecion. The game was very fair so he could have run the game.

  8. I wonder if UEFA could plan to appoint full VAR teams for both the UCL final and the EL final this year.

    1. Indeed. And he did very well. Medié Jiménez, as VAR, I don't think so. IMO, missed penalty for Getafe.

    1. Honestly he is having a shocker. 2 missed reckless arms to head by Matic. A non-existent foul and yellow card against Willian and I've now lost count of the fouls he's missed.

      Delete
    2. It looks like he is starting to lose it. Some dangerous tackles flying in now. Could easily have given at least 1 second yellow card as well.

      Delete
    3. I knew this would happen. Anyone could have seen it coming. A clear Serious Foul Play that Atkinson incredibly plays advantage on then comes back and only gives a yellow card instead of what should have been a clear red.

Thanks in advance. It would be nice to know something.

    1. Expected level, accepted by the players, 4 correct YC given. Very good physical conditions (she always was very well placed) and solid foul detection. Overall, it was a quite easy game without any big tensions between the players and no crucial decision to make.

  12. Martin Atkinson has clearly passed his prime... had a shocker of a game, wrong judgement, over lenient approach, unfit to keep up with two very top teams... imho he should retire and not spoil his good career and be a laughing stock like Dean, Lee Mason.. Am really out of words

  13. A challenging but solid performance by Marco Guida in Torino vs. AC Milan.Good positing, fitness and a solid foul detecion.Three correct YCs given for Milan after hard foul plays and a tactical foul.Very challenging so he need to very concentrated in the second half.

    2. Yes,especially the bad pass from Donnarumma and the resulting DOGSO situation. The coach of Torino Mr.Mazzarri was sent off and a penalty (for a holding) awarded for Torino. The match is very challenging with many difficult situations, much fouls and dissent.

  17. OT In Romanian League yesterday was an important game between CFR Cluj and Viitorul and the referee was Sebastian Coltescu. He give a penalty for CFR Cluj, but the former referees like Craciunescu and Porumboiu says that the ref was wrong, but for Balaj was penalty. What about this penalty. You could found this penalty at DigiSport.ro

  19. Confrotation between Rose and Ajax player.. Laoz with verbal warnings..

  20. Solid performance so far. However, it is very strange that Lahoz stopped the game for Vertonghen to be sure that he was not bleeding anymore.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think that it was about blood. I get the feeling that the 4th official was able to see that the Spurs player was not physically okay. But the inept Spurs physio's along with Pochettino insisted that he was fine.

      Delete
    2. Agree with Sheriff. Thats what i thought as well

      Delete
    3. Well, that is indeed an explanation. Expected level by Lahoz in first half. Whistle technique can be improved. Many whistles without need in order to stop the game.

  21. Yet another example of how lacking the world of football is in regards to properly assessing and handling concussions.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What just happened is unbelievable and I'd expect UEFA would ban Tottenham's doctor. Mateu Lahoz, before allowing the return of Vertonghen, asked the doctor if he was sure the player was OK. He went to talk to him personally. 5 seconds after re-entrance, the player has to leave the field of play with help because he's not well at all.

    1. Player wanted to continue. Not doctors fault at all.

      Delete
    2. Those were truly disturbing and troubling scenes. Not the image that "The Beautiful Game" deserves.

      Delete
    3. Even if the player wants to continue, the referee has to allow it. If he asks the doctor and the doctor says "no", he could deny the entrance of the player. I doubt a referee would say "yes" when a doctor says "no".

      Delete
    4. What are you saying here? A doctor must force a player to stop if he sees that he is not physically OK.

      Delete
    5. A football player is not a licensed medical professional. Not his/her decision to make.

      Delete
    6. Here in the USA at High School level football(soccer). A referee can most definitely deny re-entry to a player who in the referee's opinion is displaying concussion symptoms.

"When in doubt, sit them out."

      Delete
    7. FIFA have strict rules regarding concessions and head injuries
If the doctor had rightly identified the player to be ill I don't think lahoz will have to deny entry of the player because FIFA instructs when a player is concussed he should be substituted

      Delete
    8. This Tottenham doctor should be banned for lifetime IMO. I also think that the LOTG should state that referee have the authority to disallow a player returning to the pitch if there are concerns about his medical conditions. But, as wee know, refs are not doctors, and that's why I have an simple idea - for big matches there should be a neutral doctor who access these situations and inform the referee in case.
I found it very satisfyinsg that Lahoz took his time in such dangerous situation.

      Delete
    9. They do have official doctors on ground not part of the participating team but reports to the head e.g UEFA or FIFA but do not report to the referees

      Delete
    10. Written rules are great and all. But serve no purpose if they're not enforced. I've yet to see FIFA or any other football entity punish a club for failing to properly implement and follow concussion protocols. All parties are willfully and blindly ignorant to a very real problem.

      Delete
    11. Exactly but we all know how football works with its politics.

      Delete
    12. I expect the Vertonghen incident will be in the referees report. So UEFA may take action against Tottenham.

      Delete
    13. Action against Tottenham. What a joke.

      Delete
    14. UEFA can't take action because there is no penalty for such imo

      Delete
    15. As in rugby, we must have an official « commotion protocol » with a neutral doctor who should be the only one to allow player to restart the game. Scandalous scene at all.

      Delete
    16. A concussion related incident in a UEFA Champions League is gonna be what finally brings change? I highly doubt it.
A concussion related incident (Christoph Kramer) happened in the 2014 World Cup Final with the entire world watching. And yet here we are 5 years later with FIFA acting as if it's a non existent problem.

      Delete
  23. Assistant referees are very attentive to follow VAR procedure.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The biggest problem regarding blood and head injuries in football is the lack of temporary substitutions, which encourages players to continue so their team doesn't go down to 10 men.

Unlike in rugby where doctors can bring a player off and properly assess them for 10-15 minutes whilst having a full team on the pitch.

    1. I can definitely get on board with that idea. Something for IFAB to consider moving forward.

      Delete
  25. In all of this, I can't help but feel bad for Lahoz and his 4th official. As they both attempted to do the right and safe thing for the player. Only to be rebuffed by the Spurs Medical Staff and their coach. But in no way is their fault and FIFA effectively handcuffs referee's in regards to dealing with concussions.

  26. Full control, full acceptance. However, having already mentioned it, the whistle technique is very annoying. Totally exaggerated!

    1. And only 3 minutes of added time. This is the most significant point for improvement in Mateu Lahoz performance.
As for the rest, an expected level.
I think he is another candidate for EL final if Valencia will be out.

    1. Indeed, well done!

He did everything to prevent conflicts and felt that they were just boys' emotions and nothing malicious. Overall good foul detection and card selection. The only goal was onside and nice that AR1 didn't flag for offside there. Good to see that both Undiano and Mateu saw that Vertonghen is not ready - they could have done nothing more but at least they were fully alert and ready to intervene.

Btw, it's not the first time when Tottenham player continues game despite of head injury:
