    1. Well Kuipers did really well in KO Stage, he has the experience, he had not any appointment with Liverpool or Barcelona at all this season and Ajax is playing in the other game. So 1st leg for Kuipers.

      Delete
    2. Have to say this wasn't a difficult guess. There are not so much referees available for these matches. Kuipers could only do a first leg due to Ajax in the other semi-final. No one would not give Kuipers a semi-final. So it had to be this one.

The appointments for next week will be more interesting... I'd expect Cakir and Brych, as usual, but Rocchi could have a chance too.
Makkelie and Kuipers are out, Spanish referees are out, English referees are out. Not much choice remaining.

Only other option would be Skomina, but that would be a bad move.

Btw - once again an appointment as fourth official for Sidiropoulos.

      Delete
    3. I think, Skomina is very possible for next week, if he is not planned for the final.
      Also Turpin could have chances.

    4. @Jaf thanks but believe me, it was not so difficult to guess this appointment.

This is what I meant regarding Zwayer. Brutal challenge, clear RC, YC given, VAR stays silent. And this is not a single case.

    1. Wow. 8 FIFA + 2 non-FIFA (Alberola Rojas & Iglesias Villanueva) as central referees, and the 2 international referees 'relegated' to VAR duties are Second Group. Lots of crucial games (almost everyone besides those 2, although Alberola Rojas' match is so far more appealing than Iglesias Villanueva's one, maybe because I'm an Alavés supporter :P, and Munuera Montero's one is far more sonorous because of the teams)

      Delete
    2. Munuera Montero's match is actually worse than Alberola's to me. And depending on what happens tonight, even Iglesias' might turn out to be. Best matches are, IMO, Mateu's, del Cerro's and Hernández Hernández's

  13. Kuipers once said that Sidiropoulos is one of his best friends. Now they are officiating match together for the first time. What do you think, did Kuipers made a choice about 4th official?

    ReplyDelete

    1. It is indeed possible, I remember some pics posted on the blog about Kuipers and Sidiropoulos spending holidays together, if I remember correctly, after WC...

      Delete
    2. It was actually before the WC. Kuipers visited Sidiropoulos at Rhodes island in Greece where he lives.

      Delete
    3. Kuipers was actually in Rhodes a few days ago.

    4. I hope, appointments in a CL SF are not based on living in a popular holiday destination. ;)

    5. Great management by Rosetti to appoint Tasos as a fourth official in a champions league Semi final. He gives him time to recover from one or two not great matches for him and absorb how other elite refs can handle tricky situations on and off the pitch. To repeat myself, even if some of my Greek friends might not like this, Tasos will be present in Euro 2020 as either a main ref or a Var. I do not think though he has realistic chances to participate in the next World cup.
It would be nice to see him in a Euro 12 years after Kyros Vassaras shined in Austria-Switzerland. Tasos should realistically aim at a Europa League semi final in the next couple of years. He must stay focused on and ignore biased criticism coming from those who want a different status in Greek football. I would like to congratulate UEFA for giving Tasos constructive support and encouragement, unlike the one the Greek federation offers.

      Delete
    6. Referees are allowed to go on holiday and have their own friends. I do not understand the connection between Kuipers being on holiday in Greece with Tasos's appointment as fourth official.
I remember Kuipers had gone to Greece on holidays very few days before the crucial match between Croatia-Greece. Kuipers officiated that match and Croatians went through as a better side with Kuipers having an excellent display.

      Delete
    7. "those who want a different status in Greek football"

Who are these? And what is that status?

      Delete
    8. I would strongly advise you to buy an new big tv screen to watch Tasos Sidiropoulos officiating at Euro 2020...
You obviously believe the Greek federation has been the most reliable in Europe...That is why our European friends trust us so much. I think Greek football authorities can be only compared to those in premier league..So successful..
In a serious note as a Greek living abroad I feel sorry for Europeans who try to put up with us. We are nation that is divided with people that try to undermine anyone who made the mistake to be better than others, like Tasos.

      Delete
    9. I think it's obvious that you know NOTHING about Greek football.

Noone tries to undermine Sidiropoulos. He does that by himself. I am just stating facts. Greek referees have managed to be on the spotlight those last 2 years. They have ZERO confidence and they are in the middle of the 2 teams that have taken over the HFF. The problem starts from there. Plus Greek referees made a huge mistake. They accepted foreign referees on League matches (starting with Borbalan on the 2018 Cup Final). Even when Tzilos was attacked, they stopped officiating matches only for 1 matchday. What does that tell you?

I am curious to know how you reached at the conclusion that I believe that the HFF is the most reliable in Europe. Unbelievable.

      Delete
    10. I was living in Greece the time when there was not a foreign intervention. The quality of refereeing was much worse than now. For years there was hardly any appointments in European Cups with the exception of Kyros Vassaras who built all his career on the legacy of his father; a very good and well respected official in Europe in 80s. The quality of refereeing in Greek league this year was better compared to the dark days when results were fixed by refs commando. I think Melo Pereira has been doing a great job by not listening what the big clubs want and appointing foreign refs when needed. The pressure in Greek league is not manageable by any Greek ref.

      Delete
    11. "For years there was hardly any appointments in European Cups with the exception of Kyros Vassaras"

So the appointments of Kakos and Koukoulakis were what?

The quality in Greek league this year is low. It's something natural when you have 9 new SL referees and more than 15 AR's. Most of them are not for that level.

For me the dark days are not over. The word meritocracy never existed in Greek refereeing and doesn't exist today.

    3. The big question for me is, whether Marciniak's standing is still OK enough for such that match. If yes, he would be quite possible here.
Furthermore I would prefer Brych over Zwayer in London (because I expect Cakir and Rocchi in CL 2nd legs), but maybe his CL MD1 with Valencia is a problem.
Skomina would be another option, but maybe too risky, if he is planned for the CL final.
      Therefore I go with
Eintracht - Chelsea: del Cerro Grande
      Arsenal - Valencia: Marciniak
Second legs for Makkelie and Turpin.

    1. Arguably yes. It could also be argued that this was a trifling entry.

In this case, I suspect that the AR was focused on the ball and either did not see the opponent enter the penalty area or couldn't tell if he was in the penalty area before the ball left.

At least this one becomes easier to deal with next year.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So far IMO YC for Suarez would be a correct decision. No penalty is also a good call for me. Regarding mobbing by Barcelona, I agree with Chefren, something we are used from Barcelona but I think Kuipers knows how to handle it.

  29. Looked like he missed a clear YC when Mane was held breaking out.

  30. Now Milner with bodycheck on Messi.
Milner should have been booked imo.

    1. I think here is a case for a huge gap in the rules. The ball must be in play, yet many "fouls," like this one, happen when the ball is out of play. So I feel FIFA must amend the rules to include "fouls" when the ball is out of play.

      Delete
    2. No gap really. The referee is still allowed to book Milner, the restart of play just stays the same (throw in).

  35. Suarez is such a troublemaker...Kuipers is very tolerant..I don't like this lenient approach.
Besides of that expected level with some minor mistakes in foul detection.

    ReplyDelete
  36. IMO, asuarez should be the one with YC after 1st half, by commenta I would say probably Rakitic but I totaly missed the incident :/. Barcelona's players tried to make a presure on Kuipers, but so far he is very firm and in control.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Far out, Suarez is in need of a card.

    ReplyDelete
  38. What does everyone think about there being a gap in the rules, in that "fouls" like Milner's against Messi can't be called because the ball must be in play for a foul to be called, yet many "fouls" happen when the ball is out of bounds.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can't award the foul but you can give YC for that...
But, no YC was smart decision IMO.

Björn is great because he is refereeing, he is not decision maker, if you know what I mean.

      Delete
  39. Not impressed by Björn so far today:

    - I believe he missed two mandatory cautions for reckless tackles (8', 10')

    - Two tricky penalty incidents - one can argue careless behaviour by Piqué running behind Mané controlling the ball (5') and handball involving short distance, natural hand position but possible hand move toward the ball (14'). In both cases rather no clear and obvious mistakes were made so no VAR interventions are understandable.

    - Referee should have isolated Suárez and have a strong talk to him after several incidents at the end of first half. He clearly provokes opponents after that Milner's charge on Messi.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We will see in the second half did Kuipers made right decision with this refereeing aproach/tactic (lenient)

      Delete
    2. @DrMr I cannot agree more with you! It always makes me laugh a little when each and every situation which can possibly be a yellow is described as CLEAR yellow cards missed. You are so right in underlining the difference between a referee and a decision maker!! And I think I know what category the real top referees are in :)

      Delete
    3. Marcello, another provoking user? How can you say the tackles in 8' and 10' were not reckless? I love Kuipers' style of refereeing if you missed my comment after quarter-final, but missing CLEAR (yes, clear, mandatory, obvious) yellow cards is not match management doesn't matter how much you will try to make it such.

      Delete
    4. Provocative? Only because I disagree with you and most of the readers here? Nothing provocative about my comment. And I actually was not pointing at you personally, but at all readers who are more or less only counting missed yellow cards. Much more room for interpretation when assessing careless vs reckless than many readers think of.

      Delete
    5. And now, we can conclude that referee's tactic was the right one. On the paper, few cards missed but great leading of the match and full control in the UCL Semifinal

      Delete
  40. At least 3 missed YC from Kuipers, far too lenient which could work in his disadvantage in the 2nd half.

  43. Rakitic actually obstructed there. That's a rule that referees don't enforce according to the rulebook, as they let players shield the ball when they aren't within playing distance of it. Darn, I was writing this comment and missed the goal!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Well, you can see in RAP that such a push in the face is a red card but apparently not in the VAR era (not a clear and obvious mistake not sending off a player for that).

  45. At the end: not so good card management, some fouls missed but overall very good control of the match and no big mistakes by the Dutch team. On the other hand, Cakir is appointed on Saturday afternoon for an important game in relegation with different AR's. His AR's don't have any appointments this weekend. Usually they're appointed in full team prior to a CL game. May be personal reasons.

  53. I want to say thanks to Ancient Dr Zuma Spell Temple for everything so far. To everyone who doesn’t believe in spell, I was one of those ones at first. I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to do this since I’ve tried others so-called spells casters and they did not work and was a waste of my time and money. However, when I read through the testimonials of other people about his good work i decided to contacted him and after I talked Dr Zuma who answered all my questions and was very nice about everything, I decided to give it a try. I figured it would be my last try to get my guy back. So my story is that I was at my office when the guy I am in love with told me that he wasn’t in love with me and never will be and that he didn’t want to speak or see me again, especially since he was talking to this other girl. When I talked to Dr Zuma, he let me know which spells would be most appropriate for me and I chose the ones that was to get him back to me and stay with me and want to marry me. As soon as he started on the spells, my guy came back into my life! It was a miracle to me and I’m so thankful for that. Things have been going well, and pretty much according to what Dr Zuma said would happen. He’s always there when you need him and that’s also after the spell is done. I’m still waiting for the spells to completely manifest, but with all that has happened so far I’m very happy because i was already given up on myself before contacting Dr Zuma, if you asked me or my friends if I would have anticipated how things were right now…no one would believe it!
