  1. Everything was expected there, for tomorrow my predictions: Makkelie in Porto - Liverpool and Skomina / Cakir in English derby.

    1. So, it will mean no Skomina for CL final?

      Delete
    2. Why not? He can get final even in case of appointment for a quarterfinal.

      Delete
    3. Enter your reply...Damir Skomina alongside Clément Turpin are the referees with the highest chances of officiating at the finals.

  2. according to tomorrow the designations could be:
    Makkelie Porto - Liverpool
    Orsato English derby

  3. Expected appointments, and also committee member for Turpin.

  4. Both are expected appointments. That leaves Makkelie and Skomina (?) for tomorrow matches.

Looks like Torino-Cafliari was very challenging match for Irrati.
    3 red cards,8 yellows,many fouls.

    1. Excellent officiating there. Irrati is a referee who doesn't accept compromises. You protest and you get YC, you insult and you get straight RC. In addition, all mandatory cautions for at least reckless challenges.

      Delete
    2. A shame he's only behind the screen internationally. I don't see many referees like that nowadays.

      Delete
    3. True. I always saw him as a material for great international referee. I remember the first game I saw him (Serie C play-off?) and immediately after the game I said "what a great ref!". One of the best officiated game I watched in my life.

      Delete
    4. I have watched the key scens and Irrati sure is a strict one. But I agree with almost all cards shown (one was a bit soft) and this is a referee who - as Chefren said - doesn't do compromises. He is not unapproachable, but he is strict. SPA + dissent (kicking the ball away) after 50 seconds? YC. Reckless challenge after 110 seconds? YC. Refreshing to see that for once. I can understand not everybody likes it.

I feel that if the likes of Ramos, Satō or Kulbakov had referee this game, we would have half of the cards at best.

    5. Irrati sounds like my type of referee. Too bad he's stuck behind the monitor internationally.

      Delete
    6. Enter your reply...irrati is still young and his time will definitely come. for now, Gianluca Rocchi and Daniele Orsato are more experienced referees representing Italy, who dont have much time left at the top.

  6. Martínez Munuera with TWO OFR during the first half in Bilbao. Probably 6 or 7 OFR during this season. To much

  7. This is the 52nd CL match for Brych, who therefore overtakes Wolfgang Stark as the German with the most appointments and is now overall on the second place behind Kim Milton Nielsen.
Brych also has given the most Yellow Cards (220), the most 2nd YCs (13) and the most penalties (21) in the competition.
BTW: Can you guess (without looking it up), which referee gave the most straight Red Cards in CL history?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would say Olegario Benquerenca or Lubos Michel. They were both very easy in giving red cards.

      Delete
    2. Maybe even Rosetti when I think better.

      Delete
    3. Rosetti would also be my guess.

      Delete
    4. Michel is the only guess so far, who is in the top 5 (with 7 straight RCs)
Benquerenca and Rosetti have 5, the others less.
The top 3 are still all missing. :)

      Delete
    5. Anders Frisk might have something around that number considering how many games he had. Same goes for Howard Webb. Oh and Wolfgang Stark of course, he had 3 I believe in one game alone (although it was 2nd YC).

      Delete
    6. De Bleeckere?
      Undiano Mallenco?
      Kassai?
      :)

      Delete
    7. Kassai is actually the referee with the most CL matches without any straight RC (followed by Mejuto and Rizzoli). :)
Frisk is on a joined 2nd place (together with a current Elite referee) - best guess so far.
But number 1 is still unknown. (small hint: He did at least one European final).

If we look at the total number of sending-offs (including 2nd YCs), Brych would be on the first place again, followed by Mr Unknown. ;)

      Delete
    8. Markus Merk? (I nearly said Herbert Fandel)

      Delete
    9. However in my opinion it is very particular that referees with so many CL games have a so low amout of straight RC issued. Without having a deep knowledge about that, I thought that numbers were definitely higher... for sure for Kassai it is a record to have all these games but no straight red cards, one could not even believe that!
      Very interesting statistics...

      Delete
    10. These are very interesting indeed. May I ask if you found them somewhere Philipp S or are they based on private research?

      Delete
    11. Philipp S what you say about Rizzoli is wrong, he brandished a straight red against Szczesny in R16 Arsenal - Bayern in the 13/14 season. For some reason this game is not listed on transfermarkt.de (which might be where you got your stats from). However, there is a match report here:

      https://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/chleague/spielrunde/champions-league/2013-14/7/2377854/livematchkarten_fc-arsenal_bayern-muenchen-14.html

      Delete
    12. Indeed, transfermarkt is my source and it seems, there are some gaps unfortunately. Maybe I should have remembered this particular RC anyway.
But it should be still correct for Kassai and Mejuto. BTW, Claus Bo Larsen even has no sending-off at all in 34 CL games.

And yes, Markus Merk is the correct answer. The number varies between 10 and 12 RCs, but it is surely the most.

So as an overview (there might be some inaccuracies, but the general picture should be correct)

  8. Adrián Cordero Vega (34) in Girona FC v Villarreal CF

=> Laissez faire approach in the first half, some chances for warning missed.

=> He started second half with an easy yellow card to VIL8 (51') that was not in line with his overall attitude till that moment. Further six yellow cards were issued after that, including the YCs to GIR8 for persistent infringement (well read!, 80') and VIL4 for dissent (90+6').

=> Although the seven yellow cards were shown, Cordero Vega's style couldn't be described as active. Contrary, his reactions were often very late and not firm enough (apart from dissent). For example, (public) warnings for early fouls would have been expected (1', 4'), a very late card for reckless stamp (74'), lack of interest in reacting against tackle (90+4')

=> Good lost time compensation. Seven minutes added to the second half due to three breaks for medical treatment and substitutions.

=> Overall match control was not in danger as the players were behaving very well in that game: no conflicts, no malicious fouls, etc. One can question if the referee would have taken the same approach in a hotter game?

    Replies
    1. Cordero Vega likes to stay in the background. He's having a good season in his debut in LaLiga though, but I don't see a potential FIFA referee on him, but a good "regular" LaLiga referee like Jaime Latre or González González.

Spain, furthermore, has an "international replacement" problem. In 2-3 years Mateu Lahoz, Del Cerro Grande and Estrada Fernández will retire due to age limits and they have no replacement.

From the current 10 LaLiga and non-FIFA referees:

-Alberola Rojas: If he's not affected by a kind of "Vicandi Garrido syndrome", he will surely be a FIFA referee, but very likely to "inherit" Undiano's badge already in 2020, not Mateu's, Estrada's or Del Cerro's.

-Cuadra Fernández: 1984-born. He will be a little bit old (37) to become a FIFA referee but I can see him taking one of those three FIFA badges (e.g. Del Cerro Grande was 36 when he became FIFA referee and now he's Elite)

      -Cordero Vega: 1984-born. See above.

-Medié Jiménez: 1984-born. See Cordero Vega.

-González González: No way, he's retiring next season due to age limit.

      -Iglesias Villanueva: See González González

-Jaime Latre: I see him staying in LaLiga until his retirement, but for international issues he's already too old.

      -González Fuertes: See Jaime Latre.

-Melero López: Too old + contender for demotion this year.

-Prieto Iglesias: Not enough potential to become a FIFA referee + contender for (a second) demotion.

So, this year's promotions from 2nd Division seem crucial. But it must be mentioned: There'll be only one demotion this year instead of two (my impression is that it's between Melero López and Prieto Iglesias), as Undiano will take the other relegation spot no matter if deserved or not, to "protect" other referees, so only 2 referees will be promoted this year from Segunda.

In 2nd Division there are many young referees, but I don't know if with enough potential to become successful FIFA referees, so let's see. Also, specially for Spanish readers, which current Liga 123 referee(s) do you see as the next Spanish internationals? Or do you think that in early 2020's the FIFA spots will be fulfilled with Cuadra Fernández, Cordero Vega and Medié Jiménez?

      Delete
    2. I don't watch LaLiga123 but these are the referees with dates of birth:

1992 - Oliver de la Fuente Ramos
      1990 - Álvaro Moreno Aragón
1989 - Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos
      1988 - Santiago Varón Aceitón
1987 - Rubén Ávalos Barrera, David Pérez Pallas
1986 - Abraham Domínguez Cervantes, Iñaki Vicandi Garrido
1985 - Saúl Ais Reig, Víctor Areces Franco
      1984 - Dámaso Arcediano Monescillo
1983 - Aitor Gorostegui Fernández-Ortega, Javier Iglesias Villanueva, Juan Luis Pulido Santana, Daniel Jesús Trujillo Suárez
1982 - José Antonio López Toca, Luis Mario Milla Alvendiz
      1981 - Valentín Pizarro Gómez
1980 - Jorge Figueroa Vázquez, Daniel Ocón Arráiz, Gorka Sagués Oscoz, César Soto Grado

      Delete
    3. Well, my impression is that the demotion is more likely to be between Iglesias Villanueva, Medié Jiménez or Prieto Iglesias. I didn't notice weak performances by Melero López. I like Prieto Iglesias, but he has made many mistakes this season, IMO. Let's see.

      Delete
    4. I'd feel quite sorry for Prieto Iglesias because it would be his second demotion, but not undeserved.

George, I think Iglesias Villanueva deserved a demotion since years, but IMO he won't be demoted anymore. CTA would rather demote Melero López, Medié Jiménez or Prieto Iglesias, as having above 41 yo, a demotion for Iglesias Villanueva would have signified his authomatic retirement. That's why maybe Trujillo Suárez was demoted, as he still can handle matches in Liga 123.

From Liga123, both Gorostegui Fernández (1983) and Díaz de Mera Escuderos (1989, I've posted some clips here of his performance in Asturian derby in the last weeks) were the "substitutes" for promotion (Idk if this exist on other leagues, the "suplentes" that get promoted because of e.g. an unexpected retirement from a referee of an upper category. Both of them are quite solid referees IMO.

Areces Franco (1985) is one of my favourites so far, and he was a promotion substitute in 2017. Maybe too late for an international career but I want to see him officiating in LaLiga.

Moreno Aragón (1990) I think is also a prospect for becoming FIFA referee, but this is only the 2nd season in Liga123 for him. That's not the case of De la Fuente Ramos (1992) who was only 22yo when he got promoted (2014), but looks like a bit stagnated as he's never officiated a promotion play-off game (although in 2016 was promotion substitute).

Vicandi Garrido could be promoted again but I don't think we'll see him considered for FIFA anymore.

      Delete
    5. Areces Franco very very good

  9. Absolutely excellent Benoît Bastien in the 1st half of a very challenging Lille-PSG. One of the best half for a referee I’ve seen for a long time.
But UEFA is probably right not to appoint him......

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The thing i don't understand is to see Bastien as 4th official in a CL Quarterfinal without any KO stage game even in EL round of 32.

      Delete
  10. An exhausting first half for Benoît Bastien in the top-match between Lille (2.) and PSG (1.). Two correct disallowed goals against PSG by AR1 and a correct red card given for Juan Bernat (PSG).In the additional time (45+8') in my opinion a missed red card for Mbappe because of a hard foul (kick on the thigh but no VAR intervention). Much dissent from the PSG players, so he need to concentrate in the second half and need to very strict against protests and unsporting behavior.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A solid second half by Bastien. An excellent onside call by AR2, a great last warning for Julian Draxler, who was already booked and a fully deserved yellow card for Marco Veratti because of dissent. An expected card management, great body language and clear communication with the players. Well done!!

      Delete
  11. How is this possible without Marciniak?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Simple. Others have been better this season and are more deserving. And whistling a non existent PK doesn't help him either.

  12. Alberto Undiano Mallenco in Valencia CF v Levante UD (Valencian derby)

=> Unfortunate card selection. Valencia players felt hard done by Undiano as the (fully correct) opening yellow card was issued to VAL2 in 33' after a long period of dirty play by away team (blatant holding in 18' - lack of at least! public warning - and three consecutive fouls by LEV22 between 26' and 31' for which he was not even warned).

=> After the YC to VAL2, Levante's way of play didn't change - LEV9 and LEV18 were lucky to not be cautioned. Valencia players were really angry at Undiano at the moment.

=> By ignoring these quite justifiable mobbing / protests, Undiano indirectly showed how impartial and cool-headed referee he is. Such today's attitude characterized the style Spaniard presented during the whole career - not players friend, not balancing cards to please players, refereeing what is in front of him, not interested in 'overrefereeing' the game by being a psychologist, manager and analyst more than a person who enforces the LotG.

    - Three penalty appeals rejected by the referee (39' alleged illegal use of arm, 59' tackle, 74' holding). As none of them were clear and obvious error, VAR intervention was neither needed nor expected.

Even on the replays I don't see any strong enough evidence to overturn his initial decision.
I actually see the Man U players studs make contact with Rakitic's shin before touching the ball.

    3. Der Verteidiger spielt doch klar den Ball und bleibt dann am Bein von Rakitic hängen

  17. For me clear and obvious mistake not to whistle penalty there, defender hits Rakitic first before playing the ball

    1. That's what I see also. Replays only confirm that. They don't show me anything that would make me think that the initial call was wrong.

  18. Brych changing the decision.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think that VAR in Germany is quite different from the one I see in Italy, consdering also Zwayer game Atlético - Juventus, my sensation is that German officials are deeply focused on what the referee reports to have assessed on the pitch, and not so much on the incident by itself.
Because if we analyze this situation, is not a clear mistake if you ask me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Correct. The intervention strongly depends on the referee‘s perception on the pitch, which makes sense. VAR is an assistant. He helps the referee on the pitch to rewatch incidents he missed or he had no clear perception at. The referee says what he saw and the VAR compares it with the replays.

      Delete
    2. When the final decision goes contrary to the video evidence. Then VAR hasn't fulfilled its usefulness. In this case, the images show that there was a foul committed.

      Delete
  20. Very late whistle by Brych, I‘m convinced he was not sure. My first impression in real speed was penalty. After the first replays I thought it was rather no penalty. And after the changed decision we saw a perfect replay that showed that there was a contact first. No clear and obvious error, but I think Dankert knew that Brych‘s decision was very late.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Late but correct. And the replays proved that his initial decision (late or not) was correct.

  21. As soon as i saw it i thought the barca player wrapped his foot around the united defender. Correct decision for me but not sure if clear and obvious mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What just happened in Barcelona is actually against VAR protocol. It is by no means a clear and obvious mistake and the incident has been assessed by the referee live, it has not gone unnoticed. Maybe what he described is not exactly what happened, but with the current rules, the intervention was wrong. This is very different to what happens in Spain, and IMO, strongly damages VAR implementation.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Moving forward, that's going to be problem with VAR. Much like The Laws of the Game are interpreted and used in vastly different ways by different referee's. So will VAR. What is going to prevent this from happening?

    2. Coordination between FAs and UEFA/FIFA, I hope. But this difference on the threshold is unacceptable.

Also, Turpin, if I'm not wrong, forgot to make the VAR gesture after having checked the monitor.

    3. When the decision doesn't change it should not be done, should it?

      Delete
    4. Shouldn't he make this gesture only if he had changed his decision

      Delete
    5. I don't know if it is correct but in ligue 1 VAR gesture is only made if you change the original decision

    6. The VAR protocol clearly states:" When the review process is completed, the referee MUST show the ‘TV signal’ and communicate the final decision" So he must show the signal always.

Play the advantage Brych. The Barca player has shrugged of multiple hacks by Pogba. But if you're going to stop the attack then you favor the defensive guilty player. So if you do whistle, then make things right by booking the Man U player.

    3. You forget the importance of VAR for UEFA. This kind of interventions are killing for the project. UEFA will not take a risk with bad VAR's. So either Team Turpin is out or his VAR is out.

    4. I think VAR has been inconsistent with many officiating teams such as Brych tonight. I think Turpins teams as a whole has been better than almost all other ref teams in the CL.

    2. Do you think? For me it‘s rather a mistake by Dankert. When the OFR is recommended (which is definetly wrong IMO) there are reasons for cancelling the penalty because the defender also played the ball (even only slightly). But if the whole team is evaluated as one team this could be the end for Brych for this international season

      Delete
    3. IMO his final decision is not supported by the images. He has initially gotten it right. If Brych was indeed made to question himself by the his VAR. Then any doubt should have gone away seeing the replays.

      Delete
  38. You forget some other good teams in my opinion. Kuipers, Makkelie, Orsato for example. But it's all about the team performance and team Turpin is because of his VAR a weak link now. Same for Brych, what is Dankert doing??

Turpin's AR2 with a wrong offside. Ball clearly comes off of Juventus Emre Can. AR2 hesitated and took for ever to raise his flag and finally wrongly did so. Even after raising it. He looked so unsure of himself. IMO poor teamwork by team Turpin. Referee's should help AR by telling him that last touch of off of defending player

  40. Is it me, or does it seem that now we have - in the end - a lot more correct decisions, we need something else to complain about: the way the are taken.
In my opinion there should be more attention to an important game well handled without referee controversies, instead of picking out VAR-details like timing, gestures, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wrong offside by AR2 a few minutes ago, indeed.
However, I really like Turpin when he approaches players like he did with Emre Can who was making protests. He doesn't care at all and he shows the card in a very glacial way. This is one of the strong signals of Turpin's development.

    2. Distance is really not considered anymore in the new directives. If the ball is expected the arms should be in a natural position and he should not make himself bigger.

      Delete
    3. The final angle showed that it hit the torso/chest first. At best, it then rolled off to the arm, which was tucked at his side. Not a penalty--good from both Turpin to discern so and VAR to confirm it.

    4. With the new IFAB decision in regards to handling. Would this be a PK? Or still no PK?

  57. 2015

Marciniak and Turpin joins the Elite Category.

While the Pole's advance is fully expected by everybody as he has a very long period without mistakes, add to this his personality, the promotion of Frenchman is forced due to EURO 2016 in France, after Lannoy's department. According to many observers, absolutely unjustified at the time.

    2018-19

Marciniak loves the money from Saudi FA. He is totally exploited. One example of many:

    30/03 VAR in Kielce
    02/04 VAR in Wroclaw
    03/04 REF in Warsaw
    05/04 VAR in Legnica
    06/04 REF in Cracow
    10/04 REF in Czestochowa
    12/04 REF in Saudi Arabia
    13/04 VAR in Warsaw

It's not strange that he becomes very error-prone, almost every game handled by the Pole ends in controversy. He makes another and another mistake in CL. Of course, one shouldn't forget the obvious lack of help of his best refereeing friend, much pushed by Marciniak himself, Pawel Raczkowski (who has absolutely not strong enough personality to officiate at the very top level, btw).

Turpin handled only one game in Saudi Arabia contrary to thirteen (if Worldfootball counted every game) of Marciniak this season. Turpin handled 19 domestic games this season while Marciniak did - attention, please - 32 domestic games (19 in Poland and 13 in Saudi Arabia).

Turpin, despite the political and unjustified promotion, quickly became one of the very best referees in UEFA. Always fresh, cool-headed, fully focused, alert, firm and calm contrary to still great manager but more and more tired and stressed Marciniak.

I wonder why both the Polish FA and UEFA tolerate Marciniak's overwork. He doesn't handle less game in Poland and he referees almost the same amount of games in Saudi Arabia (in addition being VAR in both competitions).

    Someone should stop that!

  58. I re-watched now two incidents from Brych's match. Indeed, it was a clear penalty (furthermore Rakitic was injured). Brych's OFR last for 7-8 seconds. He saw the situation only from one angle and made final decision. Very strange for such experienced (also VAR experienced) referee. There is one angle that clearly shows that it was punishable foul. Other situation is in 74 minute: Brych totally missed clear foul (and YC) on Suarez in very dangerous position. I believe he ended his European appearances for this year.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's the end of Brych as top referee. Arrogant referee who is keen to 'kill' his assistants because of one or two bad games. And Dankert. Why the fuck he recommended OFR?!

      Delete
    2. I agree, the time he spent at the monitor was very short. No way possible that he was able to see all the camera angles available to him.

But I get the feeling that he was already going to over the monitor doubting himself. Thus the reason why why he delayed his whistle so long. So as soon as he saw anything on the monitor that backed up his doubt he went with it.
He didn't allow himself time to see the reason why he chose to correctly whistle for the PK initially.

    3. The issue with all this is that the observer may see a very good performance and hence another appointment. Last year his AR made mistakes with offside call he was rewarded with another match in the next round, same team, same stadium.. even cakir makes mistakes crucial mustakes like when he blatantly gave atletico a penalty when the foul cleared occurred outside the box. I feel the big and established refs in Europe no matter thier mistakes/performance they get appointed again all because UEFA are not brave enough and stick to the devil we know is better than the angel we know not.. having said this brych will be appointed again

      Delete
    4. Im sorry but regardless of if VAR protocol was followed the final call was correct. The barca player instigated the contact. I think this brych hate is blown out of proportion. He is still one of the best uefa refs.

      Delete
    5. I'm with Bgymn here if people already didn't know. I think the MU no.17 has position, his body is between Barca no.4 and the ball. Furthermore no.17 gets a (small) touch on the ball and then Barca 4 initiates contact and goes over. Not a clear and obvious error to give a penalty but it was in the end the correct decision not to give a penalty IMO.
      https://streamable.com/gqy04
I have a similar example from the A-League in the weekend just gone except the referee did not give a penalty and was called to OFR but stuck by his original decision.
      https://streamable.com/79hq3
And that's it everyone, football is a game of opinions and refereeing sometimes even more so. We don't have to force others to accept our opinions nor do we have to accept others opinions as correct. But, what we all should do is be nice to one another and not shoot others down for having a different opinion to their own.

    6. Using your very own video clip that you posted Jackson
1:17-1:22 shows that the Man U player makes contact with Rakitic's shin with the sole of his foot prior to the touch that you correctly see.

I stand by what I posted earlier. Brych did not see all the camera angles that were available to him.

Jackson, I'm sorry but you're either very thin skinned or are adverse to opposing opinions. Because you seem to interpret everything as not nice or as people trying to shut up people.

      Delete
    7. My view:

The ball is reachable for both players, so both of them are entitled to position themselves as they want - therefore, the argument about Rakitić initiating contact is methodologically wrong.

There's no doubt the studs contact with BAR player's shin occurs before the ball is played by MU player. And here it's a question of referee's interpretation: was it careless or was it, due to the small amount of contact, fair?

I think it should be assessed as a careless kick as kicking the leg of an opponent who is about to reach the ball (with the kicked leg) has a strong (unfair) impact on his ability to continue play.

  60. Waking up the day after the night before i am still completely surprised. Upfront i was worried about Juventus - Ajax. I am not the biggest fan of Turpin since his match in Rotterdam (Feyenoord-Roma). His look does remind me always of a deer looking in the headlights of an approaching truck. Anxious, nerves, tension, give it a name you find most suitable. But yesterday evening we saw a match with two teams willing to win and willing to avoid a defeat. We saw a match with just two YC. A tense fight but not mean at all. Fair tackles and no harsh ones. Acceptance and respect all over the field between the players.

And in the middle of it all there was the winner of the evening. Turpin really had a great game. What a big development has he made. I never saw a potential Elite top referee in him. But he proved me wrong. He let the game flow, managed the players with a smile and small chats. He dared to not give a YC to Schöne in the first half which sorted out well. Next to the victory of Ajax this was the biggest surprise of the semis so far for me.

Ok, you can discuss over the OFR. But what if Turpin him self decided to have a look after hearing doubt in his ear so he could "sell" his decision with full acceptance. Like Jarret (i am not sure about the name) did in Australia. Now it was clear, there was no discussion anymore. Ref checked and play on. For me nothing to worry about. A EL final could definitely be a an option for him.

Regarding Rocchi, I don't think he will get CL final just because he will maybe retire. In past years, UEFA did not care much about rewarding a referee with CL final before the retirement: De Bleeckere, Bo Larsen, Stark, Velasco.

    1. Corriere dello Sport is not an objective newspaper. They write very often against referees, just because they want to make readers happy, or convinced that referee had all the faults about a certain result of a team involved.
The most reliable (if we can use this term) sport newspaper is La Gazzetta dello Sport. They appreciated the work by Turpin.
However, in an overall context, I must say the officiating of Turpin has been perceived as good, for sure satisfying by the same Juventus fans, so don't care too much about Corriere dello Sport.
In past, they used to write against all international referees just to write against Collina. Now it is quite the same.
The analysis by the "referee expert" reports that in his opinion penalty in 90' was clear (I disagree, at least one can discuss), that the OFR after Juventus goal was wrong (and only about that, one can agree) and then the disciplinary control was quite poor. Here, I disagree, because most important was the overall perception of the officiating and yesterday it was a good one. I repeat again, they are not objective, especially when Italian teams lose a game.
It will be the same for Hategan in case of even small mistakes in Napoli - Arsenal tomorrow, they will start a "battle" against him.

If we want to nit pick, then maybe the VAR reviews. But in a way, I'm okay with them. As it possibly helped him "sell" the fact that there was nothing out of the ordinary on either goal.
