  1. So entire Referees Committee (except Damkova) is active in observing referees on Wednesday. Great matches for Treimanis and Jovanovic in front of Batta and Dallas, I even expected elite referee in Manchester. Obviously, based on on the fact Rosetti will observe him, big match for Michael Oliver.

  3. Very hot Wednesday in Champions League for UEFA referees!
All committee members are out, as Referee 12 pointed out.
Big tests for Gozubuyuk and Oliver, if you ask me, and then Treimanis as well.

    1. Was it really needed to use Makkelie and Marciniak as VARs? They are very good referees, nothing against them, but UEFA should use a larger pool of referees for these different roles. Using the same names over and over again, on the field and as VAR, does not look very good for the development of referees across Europe. UEFA is not only about several FAs, but needs better representation.

  4. Brych and Ajax seems to be a never ending love story ;) If I am correct, it is his fourth appointment with the Dutch club in their last 12 games (since RMA-AJA in March 2019). Quite remarkable!

    1. I'm a fan off Ajax, but also a referee, indeed you are correct... Real-Ajax, Ajax-Tottenham, Lille-Ajax, and now ajax-Liverpool

      Delete
    2. And yet he is one of the few without controversies, so that's why UEFA can easily appoint him to a game involving Ajax again.

  5. Well I think it's long overdue for Oliver because over the last two seasons the committee thought it best not to give him any sonorous match after the Juventus vs Real Madrid that was termed Controversial and also the change from Collina to Rosetti also played a big role in that, and my thinking is that Taylor who Oliver was quite ahead of when Collina was in charge, maybe due to age on Oliver's side and not so much on Taylor's side Rosetti decided to slow things down for the younger English man and give the Older English man the opportunity, that being said Oliver is quite preferred at FIFA than Taylor. That's my take on the 2 English men

    1. I would also think that Oliver is the better of the two despite the problems at Everton on sat which was more a cock up by the VAR teamm which is quite common in England

      Delete
    2. IMO Taylor is better than Oliver.

    1. I still don't find the official circular on fifa.com, maybe this year it will be different due to the very particular situation.
In normal conditions, the deadline should have been already over.
Last year it was on 01/10.
Let's see whether we will know more on next days.

      Delete
    2. This time special deadline: 3 January 2021.

      Delete
    3. Also, nominations will only be accepted on a case-by-case basis, taking into account possible replacements for retired referees, due to the special circumstances of the 2020 season.

      Delete
    4. Although January 3 was communicated verbally to the national FAs, FIFA changed their mind recently and announced November 8.

  8. It seems that UEFA will accelerate the development of some referees since there will be a couple of retirements next year. On that context, Treimanis and Jovanovic appointments are normal.

First big clash for Oliver after the infamous RM-JUV match. Let's see how it will go.

    1. UEFA seem to be focused on the five U17 World Cup attendees i.e. Jovanovic, Ekberg, Treimanis, Kabakov & Kovács, ironically the latter is the only one already in Elite and at the same time the referee in which UEFA is less focused).

UEFA is currently on a transition period with lots of important retirements already or close to (generation of Kassai, Eriksson, Mazic, Rocchi, Orsato, Brych, Kuipers, Çakir, Skomina...)

      Delete
    2. Kovacs is the only one in that group that comes from a country that already has an Elite referee.

      Delete
    3. Another reason is that those 4 referees you mentioned are among the UEFA candidates for WC2022.

    1. "What do you think of this scene?"

A complete mess. You must not give a goal if the ball didn't cross the goal line when you whistle.

Playing advantage there after waiting for 1-2 seconds is 'expert' but penalty is ok.

  18. In PSG-Man U, the play at https://youtu.be/yUn_xbPt2aI?t=247 is a clear penalty to me. This apparent missed call, along with Oliver's missed red card on the tackle on van Dijk recently and the missed yellow card and penalty kick on Kompany's tackle against Jesus in the Belgium-Brazil game that completely changed the outcome of the 2018 World Cup. has left me feeling quite sad as to the current state of refereeing. Unfortunately, it is referees' mistakes that stand out rather than their overall good performances, but such is the importance of their calls. And it is probably just a few mistakes recently that cast a negative light on them, whereas most of the time the elite referees do a great job.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Real 0-3 at home... who would have expected that???

    ReplyDelete
  20. Salzburg-Lokomotiv Moscow, easy going and smooth for referee Gozubuyuk. Correct yellow for using arm, maybe missed foul for step on foot, but sure missed yellow for late tackle by Moscow defender 44th. But not big problems for referee.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Also missed yellow after excellent advantage.

  21. Expected performance by Srdjan Jovanović in Madrid. All YCs correct, one could argue about a YC for Donetsk coach after unsporting and arrogant behavior against the fourth offical.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gozubuyuk missed a clear foul before Lok scored the 2:2.
Guess in Germany VAR would have intervened

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think foul also. But ion Uefa guidelines, do you think Var must act?

    2. Personally I think yes, but I'm any thing else than an expert with the VAR protocol. Other opinions?

  23. Very crucial offside call in Madrid by AR1 right now (79'), correct decision. AR1 waited for the end of action before raising flag. So far a very positive impression by Serbian team in an unexpected very open game between Real and Shakhtar.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 3-3 by Real Madrid should be disallowed by VAR after OFR.
Missed offside by AR2, I think he should have detected it by himself.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree was quite obvious, would be interesting to hear the conversation

  25. Good VAR intervention in Madrid by Marciniak confirmed by Jovanovic, Vinicius was offside and obstructed GK's vision.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Clear offside, AR should have raised his flag.

      Delete
    2. First was absolutely correct and deserved, second was harsh I agree.

      Delete
  26. Very long penalty check in Manchester: the penalty by Treimanis seems to be absolutely correct, but before that possible foul by Gundogan on keeper. Tricky situation, VAR is called to a very important decision.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That’s a foul. Hard to detect live, mandatory for VAR. Bad decision by Kamphuis and Dutch VAR team

      Delete
    2. I seem to be the only one, but ok for me. Goalkeeper slides in with leg in front and both attacker as well as goalkeeper touch ball. Attacker cannot do anything to prevent the contact. Could be whistled, could be play on in my opinion.

      Delete
    3. Clear foul!!! In fact, this is example of reckless challenge! How VAR didn't intervene remains a mystery to me...

      Delete
  27. How much more clear can a foul be? How many angles do you need to look at to see that Gundogan stomps on the Porto's GK's shin?

    ReplyDelete
  28. 2 harsh Yellow cards by Oliver against Bayern. Especially the second one wasn‘t even a foul for me. Oliver first wanted to play on

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First was correct, second was harsh I agree.

      Delete
    2. the second one wasn't even a foul. First one was acceptable (although not necessary)

      Delete
    3. And now he needed to give the three YCs for Atletico to stay consistent. They were not mandatory on their own, but the expected decisions after the early Bayern bookings.

      Delete
    4. Lots of cards in an actually easy match.

      Delete
  29. Total nonsense in Manchester. Absolutely impossible to award a penalty after such a clear foul.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Situations like the one that we all just witnessed in Manchester erodes the very little trust/confidence many have in regards to the actual usefulness of VAR. Get situations right or just scrap it all and return to the less confusing times we had before.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The reason why, as you say, 'many have very little trust/confidence in regards to the actual usefulness of VAR' is not because VARs, as humans, obviously, time in time make a mistake (while, of course, tremendously reducing the number of clear and obvious errors), it's because they lack the intelligence and common sense to understand that and to be neutral while using their brain, not listening to what others say without any knowledge. Plus some other reasons.

If you think that much more correct decisions is less important than..., to be honest, I can't name any negative things that the implementation of VAR has brought to football, except, yes, some confusion, but this situation, for me, doesn't add much more confusion to what would be without VAR, it was just a really incorrect decision, an in the big picture confusion is caused not by the implementation of VAR, it is caused by ridiculous actions by FAs such as England's and also lack of coordination where FIFA and IFAB is also to blame. But the main point - the fact that the VAR system has flaws doesn't mean we should abolish it - just as we do not abolish the match official role 'referee' just because referees sometimes make mistkaes -, we should keep polishing it - just as we keep polishing referees.

      Delete
    2. I would agree with you. But then we would both be wrong.

      Delete
  31. While Treimanis correctly determined that Pepe commited a foul, VAR should have intervened because he missed what was an offensive foul by Manchester City against Porto's goalkeeper. IMO it surely was a clear and obvious error.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I must say that I like that Treimanis is punishing City for their EPL style "goon" tactics and rough play. Finally a UCL referee that correctly deals with wannabe "hardman" goon Kyle Walker.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Good offside decision by AR2 in Munich in my view. Let‘s see what VAR says

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Better management than in Madrid. Good cooperation between Oliver and AR2

      Delete
  34. Now in Munchen similar situation to Real - Shakhtar, but in this case a bit less evident and one could discuss. Still offside expected decision, and I must say very good by AR2. VAR should confirm such call, in case of allowed goal maybe referee would have been invited to make an OFR, but I'm not 100% sure.

  35. Great first half by Brych at Amsterdam.

    Replies
    1. Brych is having a super year, without any controversy. He has been the most consistent UEFA referee in 2019-2020.

    4. Is this PK? what do you think?

      Delete
  36. VAR intervention in Olympiacos - Marseille, 1-0 has been disallowed. I must say very difficult for assistant referee, extremely tight offside.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Today "paired cases" rule has become apparent. And in both situations there were Dutch VARs. In my opinion, their nonintervention was against common sense.

    ReplyDelete
  38. OFR in Milan. Clear penalty in my opinion, good decision. Kuiperrs had missed it.

    1. He showed that he didnt saw situation coz his view was blocked

  39. Good VAR intervention in Milan, I think it was an easy decision for Kuipers to whistle a PK without VAR!

  40. The most difficult offside situation now to assess for Makkelie...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Here is a clip of the aforementioned situation from the Manchester City - FC Porto game.

    https://streamable.com/xsc8a8

In my view, the question we should be asking is "Reckless or Serious Foul Play?", not "is that a clear and obvious foul?"; sorry, but I find Kamphuis' non-intervention unacceptable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, clear foul, very clear mistake.

For me it is never a SFP because of the context of the contact (gk sliding, player couldnt avoid it and the movement is normal), but it is reckless for sure.

      Delete
    2. I do think an OFR was needed and this is reckless for me not SFP.

      Delete
  42. There are two possible explanations for that situation in City-Porto. Either Treimanis said Kamphuis he saw situation well and he doesn't need OFR. Or Kamphuis simply did not intervene, but I must be honest, that foul is so blatant and clear that it is unbelieveble that he did not intervene. And I agree, for me red card due to SFP in that situation would be acceptable call.

    ReplyDelete
  43. To sum up first matchday (matches I have seen): Very good performances by Schärer and Jovanovic, both made two important calls against home teams - Barcelona (penalty+RC) and Real Madrid (disallowed 3rd goal for Real). They will certanly get second matches in Champions league. Unfortunately, Treimanis will probably be appointed in EL for the rest of the season due to this penalty incident, let's just hope for him he won't be droped from appointments for MD3 and MD4, this would be a bad sign for him. Kamphuis probaly wont get any VAR appointments this season.
Now on elite referees: Brych and Kuipers as expected, that penalty Kuipers missed should be seen in live but Kuipers showed with his handa that he was covered and he did not see the situation. That is not an excuse, but luckily there is VAR who helped there. I agree with Makkelie on that match to allow that second Monchengladbach's goal, from the available replays it was not able to prove if offside existed therefore Makkelie did right to confirm that goal.
Oliver was solid IMO, only that YC for Muller is a wrong call. Other YCs were correct considering his card management from the begining - I realy appreciate when referee is consistent in his card management and Oliver was very good in that segment. IMO Rosetti will be satisfied and I expect Oliver appointed for another top clash in the following matchdays.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with your comments on Oliver. That yellow card for Muller was a mistake. But if you watch the incident again Oliver doesn't even see a foul but then I believe his 4th official intervenes (Andrew Madley who is reasonably new to the Premier League and only FIFA listed as of this year) and tells him to give the yellow.

      Delete
    2. Yes, you are right, at first Oliver did not even whistle a foul and he turned around from that situation. Probably intervention or fourth official, no other explanation IMO.
