  1. Two more First Group referees in League A. While Buquet could be expected, Gil is a more surprising choice.
I wonder, whether UEFA prepares a wider range of referees to be used in CL group stage, given that there will be 3 matchdays in 3 weeks.

Stegemann with his full international debut - like Osmers in a Montenegro game.
No women used this time in League D, confirming the exceptional role of Frappart at the moment.

  2. Don't see the sense why the potentially very deciding Group D game goes to Griffith and LIESMR to Burchardt. Or why UEFA decided to appoint much higher ranked referees in a League they themselves graded down...

Seems like UEFA considers MNELUX important - fair enough - enough to appoint Stegemann.

    1. Thanks for the videos - always interesting to see and hear the VAR process. My opinions (knowing, there might be different insturctions in CONMEBOL):
      1) Rather unneccessary that the VAR asks the AVAR after he noted, that the arm is in a natural position. It can be hardly a clear and obvious error, if already two people (Ref and VAR), think, it's no penalty. Correct decision though
      2) Looks more RC than YC, but as Pitana had the correct perception of the situation, it is understandable, that they didn't do an OFR
      3) Clear penalty (opponent is touched before the ball). Maybe the check could have been faster
      4) Correct decision and understandable process - just a bit too long
      5) Difficult. I think, RC and no card are both understandable somehow. If I understood correctly, the referee also had a different perception, whether the ball was played - but I don't see how that changes the RC decision. So I am not too convinced by the OFR, but as the referee then changed his decision, it can't be completely unjustified.
      6) Correct regarding offside - but didn't they miss a handball there?

      Delete
    2. Scenes 1-5 are all correct, although the processes took quite long.
In scene 6, I think a clear handball by #6 White is missed, OFR is necassary

      Delete
    3. Thank you, absolutely interesting video!
      1) Play ON - no doubts and too long analysis (but of course good to come to a correct decision).
      2) It is correct to support Pitana choice, as he explained his perception that can't be fully denied by video footage. As Philipp writes, basically this seems more RC than YC, but not a 100% clear one and there are arguments for backing Pitana.
      3) Penalty correct decision, could have been a quicker process, I agree.
      4) Absolutely agree, punishable handball, no matter the previous touch by the same player, this was a hand blocking the ball. In this case I can understand more why the process was long - many factors to consider before coming to final assessment.
      5) In my opinion in this case RC a clearly wrong decision, so I agree with OFR and final decision.
      6) Yes offside is checked, but then what about the possible handball? I hear that VAR says "mano" but then it is not clear what he is saying. Was this hand analyzed or not? Given the position of arm when view is free, it should be a very clear one, no matter the distance. However, to add, very particular situation, because in this context VAR was checking the annulment of a goal, so inviting referee to OFR for another reason is not a straightforward process - this video could be used for VAR didactic purposes, because it is relate to two main aspects: at first offside then handball (when offside is not still materialized). I think this rarely happens, I remember a Shakhtar game in which a goal was offside, if I'm not wrong, but then VAR found a penalty.

However, for sure it is not easy to work as VAR, you can see how many difficulties and one must be very, very careful. In addition, since very often RC are not black / white situations, it is very problematic.

  7. PK + YC called by Jovic in AZE-CYP.

Correct PK (holding/tugging)? Possible DOGSO RC?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Other 2 cards from 1H were fine (AZE18 in 5' for SPA/UB and CYP8 in 37' for dissent)

Jovic has a quite 'aggressive' card showing procedure, maybe it's ok in situations of dissent and PK but sometimes players don't 'deserve' that :D

      Delete
    2. Quite soft penalty, I think. First light, but mutual holding and then the attacker stops to make the defender run into him. No penalty would be at least the better decision, IMO.
No DOGSO is correct, because of the angle and the nearby defender.

  8. Age would not be a problem; however, how many foreigners have you seen promoted in the highest levels of English soccer? I have seen none! The most recent example is Gillett, who was FIFA referee in Australia (a Commonwealth country), but they still keep him in a lower level. When a referee in good standing moves countries, it is expected to move down one level, which for Gillett would be from FIFA to Premier League, but that did not happen (yet) in England. Gavillucci left Italy not in good standing, so he has to start again from the bottom, which will make it unlikely that he will reach anywhere closer to the top English competition. Faghani's quick integration in A-League is an exception, not seen anywhere else, especially in Europe.

  9. Jovic with average performance.

No clear line, one thing is foul, same thing 2 minutes later same foul is not whistled which led to Cyprus players being very angry with his way of officiating.

Correct penalty and YC to CYP #2.

    All his bookings were correct.

  11. Who was the best in Spain luis medina or mejuto Gonzalez ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my opinion, Medina Cantalejo. He dod a World Cup quarter-final and 4th official in the final (2006), while Mejuto Gonzalez only attended Euro 2004.

      Delete
    2. Mejuto was also at Euro 2008 - again without KO match.
Furthermore Mejuto had a U20WC final, a CL final and twice as many CL matches as Medina, who "only" had EL final and U21EURO final.

      Delete
    3. I believe that a World Cup quarter-final and a presence in a World Cup final is more important, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

More interesting, Collina and Rizzoli did a World Cup final, UCL final, UEL final and Euro semi-final each.

      Delete
    4. Spainsh referee Garcia aranda is the best referee in spain in history in my opinion

      Delete
    5. Remembering the performances of Medina and Mejuto I think that Mejuto had something more than Medina. I mean that Mejuto was more constant along his carrier at high level, while Medina had a very good spot during WC 2006. mejuto was better for a longer time and he granted more recognition in CL. Medina had a very good moment but limited to 2006. IMO
For Spain we cannot forget Lopez Nieto, Garcia Aranda Encinar and Diaz Vega in the 90th / Millenium

      Delete
    6. I always find it fascinating when people try to decide who was the better referee based on which matches they got. And then, at the same time, we all recognize that appointments are based on a number of variables that are irrelevant to performance (e.g., which teams are involved, if the referee's country has had a lot of assignments, which continent had a certain match last, etc.). Anyway...

For this question, such an analysis is particularly stupid because everyone seems to forget that Medina Cantalejo only went to WC06 over Mejuto Gonzalez because one of Mejuto's ARs failed fitness and, at that time, if one member of a trio failed then ALL members failed.

So if one of his ARs passes fitness, Mejuto Gonzalez referees a UCL Final and goes to two EUROs and a WC and we probably never even hear the name Medina Cantalejo in the same breath.

Moreover, anyone who paid close attention to EURO 2008 knows Mejuto was the odds-on favorite for the Final if Spain didn't make it.

To the question of who was better, a lot would probably come down to taste. But in the eyes of UEFA, at minimum, it was 100% clear that Mejuto Gonzalez was the favored referee. FIFA was a bit different but, again, that door for Medina Cantalejo only opened because of a single failed fitness test by one of Mejuto's ARs.

  15. Correct second YC for swiss player and YC for Rudiger just before final whistle. Perhaps SFP here?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Borderline decision regarding Rudiger, I tend towards RC, but YC still OK, I think.

      Delete
    2. Agree Philipp but i think circumstances (just end whistle after and no big réactions by swiss team and victim - Rudiger put his hand to get up the opponent - seemed to tend with YC. So still OK as you said !

      Delete
    3. For me 100% rc. Elbow used as weapon

      Delete
    4. I agree with Hans, Rudiger should have been ejected (led with his elbow, force).

For UEFA in an RAP I reckon unfortunately this would be an "8" as ostensibly there is scope to assess the striking foul as a very reckless 'tool', and not necessarily a 'weapon'.

  16. Two RCs by Stegemann in 90+5' for mutual punching and a 2ndYC for agressive behaviour in the following confrontation.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Here is video : https://streamable.com/p89xw4

      Delete
    2. Excellent cooperation with Bastian Dankert leading to two mandatory RCs for VC. Evaluation of the 2ndYC is not possible only from this video.

      Delete
    3. Stegemann had something similar last year in an U21 match, if I remember correctly... The red cards are correct, but top referees are expected to prevent such incidents... Losing at home in front of Luxembourg will never be easy digested by any team from the Balkans... that is why FIFA and UEFA insist that modern referees must have football understanding, including knowledge about the cultural differences involved in a match.

      Delete
    4. I would agree with both in Ref_1707 and Anonymous - the sanctions issued by Stegemann were correct, and maybe he could have 'found' a freekick a second before the contretemps happened (last minute, match context) - though I wouldn't blame the German too much.

Not that Anonymous' use of the notion of "football understanding" is incorrect here, but personally I would be cautious about hypothetically using that phrase ad nauseam to such extent that it becomes even pseudo-intellectualist.

      Delete
    5. Mikael, I did not blame Stegemann. I am sure you understood what I meant, something similar with your suggestion of "finding" a reason to slow down the game. Top referees have what it takes to "expect the unexpected" and know how to use those preventative tools.

      Delete
  17. Griffith: Not brilliant, but solid enough. Kept his calm and his decisions in a clar line.

Munukka: A bit out of depth at times in a match that was very unfair. Soft, but supportable pk.

Burchardt: Tried to keep his cards in his pocket for 45 minutes, had 9 after the break and missed a SFP. You can't win in these games, but I much preferred Levnikov's style.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Munukka was, as you said out of depth at times in a unfair match. Seems like the man management was to soft, which might have caused the match to become a bit chaotic at times.
He missed a clear penalty in min 56 for a step on foot. Not solid with the cards either. Missed a clear yc for elbowing in the first half and also a quite clear spa went unpunished early in the game. Pk correct decission.
Fell for simulations a couple of times in similar situations, issuing cards when the players pretended they had been hit.

  18. Could you write about Gil performance ?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Regarding Stegemann: Brych also had an incredible injury time last season, in which a coach was pushed over and a massive fight happened. I wouldn't say Brych lacks in football understanding, so sometimes it is almost impossible to prevent.

  20. Regarding the Pickford incident (EVE-LIV)

    https://streamable.com/z9xrj3

It’s beyond me that Pickford escaped a sending off following his torpedo tackle, causing severe injury to Virgil... If this is not endangering the opponent’s safety I don’t know what is! It’s expected that Virgil will be out for 7-8 months, most probably missing out on EURO’s as well.

  21. I dont know if others will agree, but I see penalty for Getafe and a RC for Chiesa in Crotone-Juventus as very debatable decisions.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think both decisions can be backed, especially PK for Getafe.
As for Chiesa's RC I'm not so sure but it can be accepted.

      Delete
    2. I think that both are correct, specially RC for Chiesa which is 100% SFP for me.

      Delete
    3. About Chiesa, he was in full sprint and there was neither intention nor excessive force. The fact that it is an ankle is of questionable importance for me because the player was in sliding tackle, so his ankle was "sliding on the floor" with the rest of his leg! YC would be better IMO, but I agree that RC is not a clear mistake

PK for Getafe: no VAR stuff because there are some elements, but... I am not convinced because Getafe player moved his right leg in a way that "calls" for contact and is not completely logical
