    1. I think Kuipers was a replacement last week, there he had a different VAR team than usual.

Makkelie with Blom as VAR, Kamphuis punished for last week?

I want to thank Dr Emu a very powerful spell caster who help me to bring my husband back to me, few month ago i have a serious problem with my husband, to the extend that he left the house, and he started dating another woman and he stayed with the woman, i tried all i can to bring him back, but all my effort was useless until the day my friend came to my house and i told her every thing that had happened between me and my husband, then she told me of a powerful spell caster who help her when she was in the same problem I then contact Dr Emu and told him every thing and he told me not to worry my self again that my husband will come back to me after he has cast a spell on him, i thought it was a joke, after he had finish casting the spell, he told me that he had just finish casting the spell, to my greatest surprise within 48 hours, my husband really came back begging me to forgive him, if you need his help you can contact him with via email: Emutemple@gmail.com or add him up on his whatsapp +2347012841542 is willing to help any body that need his help.

  2. Kamphuis not appointed with the Dutch crews after Manchester City - Porto, let's see whether he is in another game or not. This could be the signal of the assessment by committee regarding the penalty by Treimanis.

  6. Most interesting question is why was Marciniak appointed as VAR twice in first two matchdays and did not get a single match as referee? Is he maybe injured? I doubt he is being punished for something because in that case he would not get even those VAR appointments. Interesting to see Turkish referees with non-Turkish VARs but Turkish AVARs-that is very strange IMO.

    1. IMO it's clearly a punishment as he handled a game in Poland on Saturday. But we have to admit his blunders in last two games were unacceptable and shouldn't happen at UEFA level at all.

      Delete
    2. Easy to find an answer about Marciniak status, he is not injured, as he has been appointed in Ekstraklasa two days ago.
I think he will officiate in Europa League on Thursday, skipping CL MD1 and MD2 due to previous performances. To be honest, the missed RC was definitely something too blatant to keep eyes closed, then the penalty in Kyiv to follow (in this case, mostly VAR fault).
Maybe the game for him in EL will be in Spain.

      Delete
    3. Could be but IMO there is no logic in appointing him as VAR two consecutive matchdays if he is punished. But at the moment, punishment seems like most logical explanation.

    4. Maybe UEFA is trying various combinations referee-VAR to see how they would work at Euro?

  8. So many mixed appointment from UEFA, not easy for them

  9. Great appointment for Makkelie. Just one question about the appointment of the FO's. In case of Makkelie, Allard Lindhout has been appointed in this top clash. Is this wise of UEFA? He is new on the list, definitely a promising referee but having little experience. Just one EL Preliminary match. Shouldn't UEFA appoint somebody with more experience in EL Group stage for example? Just in case of?

One can imagine what would happen if the scenario of a injury with Makellie during the match is there and Lindhout makes a crucial decision with a lot of discussion about it afterwards. Whether the call was right or not.

To make myself clear, this question is not to critism Lindhout which I personally think is a young and very promising referee. But just on the strategy and choices of UEFA.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Indeed, the risk could be avoided by putting Kevin Blom as 4o, he is a verry experienced referee, only no fifa badge for him anymore, and Lindhout in VAR, not even a teamchange, same team only different roles, Lindhout is a VAR in the Neteherlands to.

      Delete
    2. This is a clear lack of foresight by UEFA, they clearly don't plan for Referees getting injured during the warmup or during the game. I remember last season a big champions league game handled by Taylor and I think the 4th official was David Coote or someone like that who didn't even have a FIFA badge at the time.

  10. Seems like a difficult time for UEFA's appointments. Referee teams from different countries even on the pitch. While the 'big countries' have a lot of referees, ARs and VARs to swap in case of necessary replacements, it seems to be tougher with smaller countries (Kruzliak, SVK; Ekberg, SWE).
Bibiana Steinhaus with her debut as AVAR in CL, if I'm not wrong. Not too surprising as she is a specialised VAR in Germany now.

    2. Maybe Rosetti withdrew Guida and the other Italians foreseen for this week after having studied Mikael's post. 😏

      Delete
    3. As a matter of fact, Massa's performance in Chelsea-Sevilla was brilliant. Treimanis, Scharer, Jovanovic and so on made errors last week and VAR intervention was often needed.

I'm not saying that Italian referees are better: Treimanis and Scharer have a huge talent, but their experience cannot be compared to that of Massa, Guida, Mariani etc. who have been officiating top matches in Serie A for years. We also can't deny that Italian referees are having a fast-track to Elite, and maybe this is not fair.

What I mean is that we should focus more on performances, not on the names.

      Delete
    4. Hopefully this blog isn't making that much impact. Otherwise, commentators (including anonymous ones) can use it to destroy some referees and promote others.

  13. Eredivisie: Vitesse - PSV
Referee: Bas Nijhuis / VAR: Danny Makkelie
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__GDxlvn-DM&t=658

Big discussion in the Netherlands. Nijhuis gave penlty because he thought it was a two-handed pushing, and Makkelie intervened that it was not a two-handed pushing. Nijhuis who saw the video canceled panlty because it was different from what he saw.

Many opinions in the Netherlands: It's a too easy given penalty, but it's not a clear and obvious error.
Post-match description of Nijhuis: The reason for the decision was wrong.

Protocol says: The original decision given by the referee will not be changed unless the video review clearly shows that the decision was a 'clear and obvious error'.

I think that the mistake of the decision reason and the error of the decision itself are different, but what about?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Correct VAR intervention, it was a clear and obvious error.

This is football, not basketball. Not every contact is a foul.

      Delete
    2. IMO it is a correct VAR intervention, as the pushing is way too light and therfore does not justify a penalty.
I am pretty sure that Nijhuis had a wrong perception and then it is absolutely understandle to rewatch the incident and to change the decision.

      Delete
    3. Thanks replies.
I understand the opinion that this contact is not foul. However, in the operation of VAR in Eredivisie, many people feel that this is an acceptable penalty decision. (Of course, you can think that the judgment of VAR was wrong so far.)

In any case, even if the referee had a wrong perception, it is expected that the decision will not be finally corrected unless there is a clear and obvious error.

      Delete
    4. You forget to mention some aspects on this situation Anass.

In the first place Bas Nijhuis himself stated that when he heard that there existed no pushing with two hands (= wrong perception) he ordered to see the situation himself. This is perfectly accounted for in the protocol.
After seeing the situation at the monitor he assessed his original decision as a clear error, saying he would never give such a penalty. That’s why he annulled his initial decision.
In the meantime the Dutch football association has already confirmed that these course of events is totally OK, and no penalty is a correct decision.

This just to add to the incomplete representation of the affairs.

      Delete
    5. I understand that VAR can intervene and referee can review the video due to the himself wrong perception. But in order to see the video and correct the decision, it must be a clear and obvious error, right?

Frankly, I don't know the rule rationale for the referee to correct the decision based on not "whether clear and obvious error" buit "whether his perception was wrong". This is why it is controversial in the Netherlands.

      Delete
    6. Why "pushing with two hands" is mentioned? When judging a pushing, does it make any difference whether a pushing is done with one or two hands?

      Delete
    7. It does matter when there is no pushing with hands, not with one and not with two :)

      Delete
    8. Anass if this helps you with your rationale when it comes to clear and obvious... The bulk of it lies on the perception of the referee and what he has seen, that really constitutes towards the clear and obvious when the communication between the referee and his VAR are not aligned. For example the above sceberio cannot be scene as a clear and obvious error to we the viewers and hence it can be supported but the bulk of the load was what the referee thought he saw which the VAR told him was not what happened hence underlining or rather constituting a clear and obvious error from the referee... If the referee had seen that it was only one hand that was used in the pushing and that is what he communicated to his VAR, then no matter how minimal it was the penalty would have stood and hence no intervention. I hope this helps out

      Delete
    9. Are you saying that the OFR was justified by the fact that the push was with one hand, not with two hands? It is either pushing or no pushing, regardless of how many hands were used.

      Delete
    10. Dank u wel, Chiagozie.
Even if the decision is the same in the exact same situation, if whether it is a clear and error or not depends "what the referee watches", then it will be very difficult for the viewers...

Thanks to everyone else for their opinions!

    1. 2-3 days ago Karasev was reported to be tested negative and fully recovered. So, we expect him to be back soon.

    1. Much appreciation for this step. It is very important that players, coaches, referees, officials come out. Although you may argue that it is part of private life, things become only normal if everyone understands that it's normal to be straight as well as to be gay. Actually, it's just a matter-of-fact, a matter of statistics that there are a lot of players and referees who are gay but don't come out. I really hope some of them decide to do it like Tom Harald Hagen or Pascal Erlachner in Switzerland.

  21. Am I the only one who thinks Marciniak is a very poor referee in general? He is full of mistakes in literally every game I’ve seen him ref except Atlético vs Leipzig he was okay and also the EL one I forgot the fixture...

    1. No I completely agree with you. I would even add that it is not only on the pitch but he makes many mistakes as a VAR as well.

    2. Here are some games that I have watched live on TV with Marciniak as the referee.

Atlético vs Liverpool: had an absolute disastrous night, gave a throw in to Atlético when it should’ve been Liverpool’s, this led to their goal, couldn’t cope with the pressure of the Spanish players, missed so many fouls and gave Lodi every time he went down, some terrible decisions.

Fair play to him for realising his mistakes and cautioning lodi for simulation in the next game against Leipzig.

PSG vs Liverpool: Again couldn’t handle the pressure and play acting from the PSG players. Missed a clear Stonewall red card for Verrati for a high challenge on Gomez. Then refused to give Liverpool the clearest penalty after the challenge by Di Maria on Mane, he only gave it after his 5th official behind the goal told him. Couldn’t cope with the pressure in the second half. All round disastrous game.

Spain vs England: as an England fan he missed a clear pull pack by Pickford on the Spanish player. Could’ve easily been a penalty. Fair play to him for sticking to his decision though 😅

Real Madrid 1-1 Tottenham: missed a penalty for Casemiro foul on Llorente.

Juventus vs Tottenham: missed the clearest penalty 🤣 Vertinghen on Douglas costa.

      World Cup 2018

Germany vs Sweden: somehow failed to spot the clear DOGSO by Boateng on Berg. Didn’t give Sweden the penalty nor did he send off Boateng. He later did send him off for a second caution.

I’ve given enough examples. I can’t be bothered to think of any more 😂😭

  24. La liga: Levante-Celta

Melero Lopez disallowed crucial goal in 93' after OFR for offside, he assessed that attacking team player influenced the game in offside.

Based on the fact that he wasnt between the gk and the ball and on the recent explanation from UEFA observer from Croatia that new UEFA instructions are that goals are disallowed only if there is evidence that the player influenced the situation, I would say that it was a wrong decision.

    Your opinion?

    2. I agree with you, and to be honest I don’t think this is the most difficult situation. The attacker is clearly not in the goalkeeper’s line of vision, doesn’t make an action for the ball and doesn’t challenge the goalkeeper for the ball.
In my opinion clearly a goal should have been awarded.

      Delete
    3. Very difficult situation. For me a goal should have been awarded, but I would't say this is a crucial mistake.

      Delete
    4. We should remember that the questions "would the goalkeeper have saved the ball if the offside attacker wasn't there" and "has the attacker (actually) committed an active offside offence" are different, and perhaps result in different answers.

I agree with Forlan - Melero López should have had the confidence to change his decision when his original perception and the video footage gave him different impressions. It is this contrast between what Melero (quite understandably) THOUGHT happened and what did happen that make the situation very tricky [Melero's perception: offside attacker, goalkeeper's poor attempt to save, goalkeeper's reaction afterwards]. But perhaps one could expect a top level referee from eg. Spain to be good enough to overcome that.

Another very (if you ask me, more) interesting situation to this effect happened in Arsenal - Leicester yesterday evening :)

      Delete
    5. @Mikael W: Do you mean the disallowed goal for Arsenal in 4th minute? Wasn’t that just an “interfering with play by touching the ball”?

      Delete
    6. @Mikael W
      I agree completely

Regarding Ars-Lei, you think it could be possible to "sell" no offside decision??

      Delete
    7. Honestly if we begin to disallow goals for this, it becomes absorbed to me, any form of distraction that the goalkeeper might have gotten came from the deflection from his own player and not the Levante player in an offiside position who was quite trying to get away and avoid the ball. The lack of good catch from the goalie was simply as a result of the deflection. Truth be told another referee would have changed the decision because quite clearly the VAR thought otherwise that's why OFR occurred.

      Delete
  25. Vary interesting situation. It's difficult to accept the decision but it's offside. He isn't blocking line of vision but he is near to him, inside goal area and by his movement he is obstructing the GK. Good decision for me

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. How is he obstructing the GK by his movement? He’s even moving away from both GK and ball. Being near according to the laws doesn’t make an attacker punishable for offside.

      Delete
    2. For me this was a very clear and easy offside call to make. The player was in a offside position weather he obstructed the keeper or not for me is irrelevant

    2. The 2nd PK decision leaves a lot of doubt IMO. Extremely short distance and the ball initially hits the player thigh and then hits the arm/hand that is in a "natural" position, not at or above shoulder level.
But I am no longer surprised by anything that is or isn't called "handling". As they've continuously tweaked the handling interpretation rule to the point that we're left guessing most of the time.

    3. For me also the second penalty is more doubtful than the first one - however I wouldn't call it a clear mistake anyway.

      Delete
    4. Yeah I'm no longer wasting any time and or effort trying to decipher what handling is or isn't. As there is zero uniformity and or consistency in the decisions that are made. It differs from league to league and from match to match. Sometimes even in the same match you get wo different decisions on similar incidents.

  32. Good offside call by AR1 in Turin disallowing a goal scored by Juventus.

  33. VAR intervention and penalty in Club Brugge - Lazio, it was for holding,
Taylor had missed it. A very clear one, otherwise VAR wouldn't have intervened. Good work by English VAR, this was very evident.

    1. Funniest part of this is that it is the same Stuart Attwell that was VAR in the Chelsea vs Man untd and yet failed to intervene in a blatant choke slam from Maguire on Chelsea's Captain

      Delete
    2. It's great to see consistency from English referee's ;)

      Delete
    3. Only thing I will say is Stuart Attwell looked at that Maguire incident and didn't interpret it as a clear and obvious error by Martin Atkinson.

      Delete
    4. Which makes the whole entire incident even worse.

      Delete
  34. Would also have been a quite clear foul by the defender at the same time...

  35. Two correctly disallowed goals by AR1 due to offside (both for Juventus), correct YC in 45+3 minute by Makkelie. IMO easy first half for Makkelie.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Now the third disallowed goal this time by VAR, still extremely tight offside, I don't know how much AR2 can be blamed for having missed it live...

      Delete
    2. IMO it was very difficult for AR to see that offside live.

      Delete
    3. Yes, it was not easy to detect it live. However, I'm a bit surprised about how much time VAR needed to tell Makkelie about the offside position. It was not as close as in Manchester in first half. Should have taken less time.

      Delete
  36. Agreed, Philipp. I actually thought the penalty was given for the foul and not for the handball.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Third goal disallowed for Juventus due to offside, this time after VAR intervention. Correct decision, very tight offside difficult to detect for AR2.

    1. Interesting fact - all three disallowed goals have been scored by same player Morata.

  38. 75 minute correct YC for simulation for Juventus player by Makkelie.

  39. Possible 2-0 in Manchester, VAR check, I think that player was in his own half.
    AR2 raised the flag...

    1. Extremely tight offside/no offside decisions in Manchester today. Very difficult for both ARs.

      Delete
    2. Yeah but one AR got it spot on the other blew it big time

      Delete
    3. The player was in his own half of the field and the AR raised his flag? OMG, That's beginner's stuff not FIFA level.

      Delete
    4. Did you watch the game? Obviously not as it was a question of centimeters or even millimeters. Nothing to blame AR2 for.

      Delete
    5. Duhhhh obviously. And yeah there's a lot to blame AR2 for that was not even that close he was onside by at least 3 yards

      Delete
    6. I hope, that VAR had better pictures than the TV audience to really prove that no part of the foot was in the opponent's half.

      Delete
    7. There is everything to blame AR2 for, not for thinking it was offiside but goodness gracious the wait and see Technique in such situations is what all AR does even if you are extremely sure, thank goodness for Jug who withheld blowing his whistle but his flag definitely influenced some players there

      Delete
    8. Re comments by wwjd, the comments before by Ref_1707 were accurate, it was millimeters, to say at least 3 yards is a total lie, of course the assistant should have held his flag and no one will realise that more than that assistant

      Delete
    9. A couple match days off should send a clear message to this and other AR's who use such poor technique and make such infantile mistakes.

      Delete
    10. Personally I would consider it a blessing for this blog if you would be a couple of match days off, saving us from your poor blogging behavior and infantile negativism.

    11. Anonymous,
I would agree with you, but then we would both be wrong. Cheers!

      Delete
    12. If in doubt, the AR is expected to give the benefit of the doubt to the attacking team - that has been FIFA instruction before VAR and now with VAR; nothing new. Very surprising that an AR raised the flag in such close situation!

      Delete
    13. ^^^^This Anonymous^^^^ I completely and totally agree with your point of view. Even without VAR, the flag should have never gone up. With VAR, no excuse for AR raising his flag.

  45. Steamroller defense = Easy PK decision for Makkelie

  46. Now penalty by Makkelie, foul started outside, and ended inside the box. Very quick whistle by Makkelie, apart from AR2 missed offside, we saw a faultless performance by the Dutch again, especially regarding disciplinary control. What I like more is that all are very clear situations and all people agree, no room for any single and small criticism. This is superb if you ask me.

    1. I've always been instructed that holding can continue from outside to inside the penalty area, but other fouls cannot. What is the argument that this foul "continues?" Because the defender falls onto the attacker in the area, correct? But the actual foul contact is outside the penalty area.

I don't know. I think there is little debate about this one because it was so late in the match and irrelevant to the outcome. But I'm actually a bit surprised there was not an objective VAR review to change this to a free kick.

      Delete
    2. Quite surprised by this view to be honest. What you describe as “the defender falling onto the attacker” I simply consider a walking over the attacker. So apart from a foot contact, despite which the attacker can still enter the penalty area, there’s a very clear push/walk into opponent inside.
Never ever should a VAR intervene in this situation IMO.

      Delete
    3. Any foul, except handball, can "continue". Regardless, the falling of the defender on the attacker is the actual foul penalized by the penalty kick.

      Delete
  47. Now correct penalty for Barcelona in 90th minute. Lot of crucial decissions in Juventus-Barcelona, IMO all correct. But, despite so much crucial calls I would dare to say easy match for Makkelie because all decisions, at least for him, were very easy and obvious.

    1. That's because all were very clear situations, but "clear" doesn't mean always "easy" in my opinion. True that you have to expect that from an Elite referee, but how many mistakes we saw in even more obvious situations? I'm still impressed by Makkelie and his skills, immediately deciding for something - not being afraid of taking decisions. Being mentally so "far" but at the same time so "close" to players. That's not common.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you, maybe I should use clear insted of easy decisions ;)
But I agree with you, superb performance by Makkelie tonight once again.

      Delete
  48. As Chefren said superb performance by Makkelie tonight, absoultely every call was correct - foul detection, card management, match control, crucial decisions...
Considering that he is "only" 37 and he could be active for next 10 years in international competitions, if he will continue with performances like this tonight, Makkelie has a great chance to become one of the greatest referees ever.

  50. Not a big fan of Makkelie.
I always said that his style is way too lenient, not consistent enough and so, so on.
Tonigjt, this was one of the better performances I have ever seen.
I was absolutely amazed by him tonigt and I hope that some other refs will give us same type of this high level performance.

  53. I saw Jug the first time with the complete game. He needed VAR to correct a wrong offside call before the second Manu goal, but I am really impressed by him. Very clear, very consistent line of card management and foul detection, good body language and authority. Fully respected by players. Compliments, I hope to see him more often.
