  1. Today there is a delay on uefa.com appointments still missing.

    1. Waiting for the appointments, I think that Krasnodar - Rennes and Brugge - Zenit are real battles for 3rd place and UEFA should appoint experienced officials. We can see it's not a case in Belgium - big game for the Dutchman then.

Group G is decided already so I would appoint unexperienced First Group referees there. Maybe another debut?

Group H is still open. Big names needed!

    2. Chefren do you know maybe how the last 6. round is usually appointed and when the information becomes public? Do they wait for all results from 5th round, and then appoint referees? Thank you!

    3. On previous seasons, the pattern for appointments was:
      1) MD1 and 2
      2) MD3 and 4
      3) MD5 and 6

This season the schedule has changed, I don't know how committee is working, considering also the difficult situation and many replacements to do.

  4. Yesterday in Italian Serie B a referee let a team play with 12 men for around 5 minutes. Thankfully it didn't influence the result.

    1. But he booked a player who received the autorization to get in the pitch and after 3 minutes he was sent off due to a foul. Listen to a former Italian referee, if Cosenza has recourse, the game could be repeated.

    2. Potentially yes. However the team that was "damaged" also won the game, so it is a very delicate situation.

  6. ridiculous penalty call yesterday evening in Serie A in Cagliari vs Spezia match 90+3, resulting Cagliari lose two points:

    1. Ref Valerio Marini is at his 4th appointment in serie A. He has been a Serie B referee for years. However, his performance was brilliant apart from that penalty (we can discuss about it being wrong or correct), as his last serie a appointment last month was brilliant too. I think Marini will have the chance to make more appearances in Serie A, thanks to the reunification of Serie A and Serie B referees group.

As far as other Serie A games are concerned, there were very good performances by Massa and Di Bello. The latter officiated Napoli-Roma, after other 2-3 big matches already obtained this season. Unconvincing performance by Abisso in Milan-Fiorentina

      Delete
    2. as i didn't see the whole match i can't either agree nor disagree with your opinion, but nevertheless, with VAR available in the match, you simply just can't give this kind of penalty today

    1. Probably only coincidence, but DFB also hasn't published tonight's appointments yet...
Or the one IT guy, who does it all, is on vacation ;)

    2. Maybe they have some issue in overall appointments for EL and CL, so they wait for the results of covid-test or some other information before publishing appointments.

      Delete
    3. The fact that some federations (Netherlands, Portugal) have already published the appointments of their referees (Gozubuyuk, Soares Dias) without being "stopped" by UEFA, should indicate that this isn't the reason. I rather think there are maybe some technical issues, otherwise all appointments would have been blocked.

      Delete
    4. Surely they wouldn't change their policy in the middle of a matchday? If there was a new policy we should have experienced the same thing yesterday.
Also, the Dutch federation publishes appointments quite often before UEFA announces them.

    1. I realy expected Marciniak somewhere but looks like Matchday 6 is planned for him - which means max 2 matches for him this autumn. Very disappointing conaidering that some referees have 4 or 5 matches...

      Delete
    2. Just because she cant get CL female final she is getting male matchs.. There are so much better referees.

      Delete
    3. I still don't understand this. She's given an (almost) meaningless MD5 appointment and she's going to leapfrog other male referees who have been consistently trusted with major matches?

There's not many places to "hide" a referee at a men's EURO. With 3rd place teams advancing, nearly EVERY match is critical.

I'm not saying Frappart isn't capable of it--I truly don't know. But UEFA's assignments do not demonstrate that THEY believe she is capable of it yet. If a male referee was making his UCL debut on this match, would you say he was likely to go to EURO next summer? The idea is preposterous.

      Delete
    4. I have to disagree with usaref this time - I really think there is a good chance Frappart will be at the EURO (in some role) next summer and UEFA are explicitly preparing her for that.

      Delete
    5. Usaref, we are not saying she is going to the Euros because of her UCL appointment but the route she has taken to get there. Common Usaref you cannot undermine the fact that there is really something in the offing. Whether meaningless or not some referees haven't event smelt the Europa League group stage in their career but someone comes and makes thier Europa League debut and in the same very season makes her UCL and nations league debut, if we keep denying and saying it is just your regular appointment, common you are the one being preposterous, some Elite referees in their current nature cannot even get a UCL game at the moment. I am truly happy for Frappart, and I don't think she gets all this appointment because she can't handle the women's UCL, she has handled the world cup final, nothing beats that, she gets all this because UEFA wants to show inclusivity in the world of refereeing,,,, both male and female. If you look at that too leagues are promoting at least female referee to the top division and FIFA started it already with Esther Staubli in the U17 WC.

Marciniak refereed the King's Connection Final on Saturday in Saudi Arabia, so it was hard after such a long trip to come back to the country and go straight to the Champions League match, in the last round of the Champions League there will be more important refereeing matches that will decide about leaving the group.

  13. Sorry but I really can't share everyone's enthusiasm about Frappart's appointment; OF COURSE, I wish her all the best for a great performance on Wednesday.

Çakır, Italian referees, handling interpretation, women appointments - Rosetti and especially Čeferin simply have a carte blanche do what they want in UEFA Refereeing, there is no accountability.

    1. Last year Super Cup, EL debut in October, and now CL debut in the same group stage. Nothing against Frappart but this is so unfair for other referees...

      Delete
    2. Mikael, totally agree. For an unknown reason, unfortunately, achievements and performances aren't at the first place

      Delete
    3. If a referee proves to be ready enough for top matches, why would he need to be appointed for lower matches unnecessarily.
Those matches are useful for talented referees coming from minor countries, who can only get experience by officiating those matches, as unfortunately the cannot do in their home leagues.
Frappart has been refereeing Ligue 1 for years now... so she should have good experience to handle this game. Same thing applies to Mariani and others who have been refereeing top clashes for years. Why would they need insignificant EL matches...

      Delete
    4. @Anonymous This is only her second year in Ligue 1 and she had her first top clash (Lyon - Marseille) in October this season. It takes years for other Ligue 1 referees to make their CL debut.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous, she has been refereeing Ligue 1 for three years and 18 games. Compare her with, for example, Millot, who has had 23 Ligue 1 games this season alone and is not even close to Champions League. This shows to me how differently she is being treated compared to other referees and in my eyes, only because of UEFAs willingness to be "equal", not for the fact that she would be the best candidate for the match.

Also, I can see a scenario where a bad performance by Frappart (or any other female referee) in a game that they have been assigned too early would eventually cause huge drawback to whole project of appointing female referees to male competitions.

That being said, I wish all the best to Frappart and her team.

      Delete
    6. I am with Michael on this one. Apart from the fact that Frappart makes history, the appointment is very unfair for many referees.

With 2 EL appointments and a NL with low difficulty, this appointment has only political value.

      Delete
    7. I am split on the Frappart thing, I simply don’t know enough to take a strong opinion one way or the other.

The default assumption is that she is there because UEFA believes she is a capable and qualified referee. Still, one can’t deny that she has seen an extremely, extremely fast rise through UEFA men’s competitions to be making her debut already. Indeed, no one else with as little (men’s) international experience as her would be making their CL debut already. However, I must once again point out that while she lacks in that area of experience, she makes up (at least in part) by having such an extensive experience in the women’s game (including a WWC Final) that none of her male colleagues have. The question is, how heavily should this women’s game experience weigh in UEFA’s evaluation of her talents? I am not knowledgeable enough about this topic to claim their evaluation is wrong.

It certainly is starting to have the smell of a political / PR move, but we should give UEFA and Frappart the benefit of the doubt. If it is a PR move, that would be bad for a number of reasons: first and foremost, it would be unfair to other referees who deserve those matches more. Also, it would harm the long-term image of female referees, by giving off a lasting impression that their appointments are political, not based on merit.

      Delete
    8. One could say that the Supercup final she officiated was also purely for PR purposes. So I'd argue that it is the same thing here

      Delete
    9. We keep shouting she makes up with the WWC final and I say she is not the first female referee to do that, I ll argue that we have more and more women who are more experienced in that regard

      Delete
    10. Purely PR - it looks good for UEFA's image to have a woman referee in UCL and Euro!

      Delete
  14. With this appointment, Frappart has shown to UEFA to be already mature and ready to handle a CL match. Very fast career due to high quality performances. Bravo Stéphanie!
Very strange that Irrati has not been appointed. He was regularly VAR in Serie A yesterday though.

  15. So, Kulbakov's first (and most likely last) appointment to CL. In the previous season, there were Lille - Chelsea (02.10.2019), Atalanta - Manchester City (06.11.2019). It has been more than year.

    1. Disappointing for him, wasn't he very close to becoming elite last year? Seems like he is farther from that goal.

      Delete
    2. Yes, of course. But last season he had matches confirming his status. In addition to the CL, there was Euro qualifiers, a very important Denmark - Switzerland. And (oops) Austria - Slovenia :)

      Delete
    3. Oh wow, I forgot he was elite already... is it just me or do I feel like the Elite list feels a lot smaller than it really is?

      Delete
    4. It is Kulbakov's second UCL appointment; he was replaced on the first one, if I recall correctly.

  16. What about Schärer (SUI)? After the first good game in CL (Barcelona vs Ferencvaros), two in EL and one in Nations League A, it seems he's not appointed anymore..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He had many appointments in the early matchdays and Nations League as well.
It would be normal to see him directly appointed for a crucial game on MD6. But I'm quite sure he will already appear tomorrow for EL games...

      Delete
    2. Why not use him (or others) as replacement rather than those who already have 4-5 matches?

      Delete
    3. According to the website of the Swiss Football League (www.sfl.ch), Sandro Schärer will be the referee for the match Servette-FC Zürich tomorrow, Wednesday December 2 at 18.15 local time.

    4. He has an appointment for CL MD6, but unclear which game...

    5. Ony the involved officials know the exact game.

  17. It seems clear chat UEFA is gong to have a preferred way for female referees. Without all steps that are necessary for male referees

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Possibly, but looking at it another way around, none of her male competitors had to take all the steps that she had to take. None of them have, for example, the experience of working a global FIFA final that she does.

Indeed, they have taken different *paths* to get there, no one can deny that. If those paths are of the same merit, there’s nothing wrong with that. I do agree it’s starting to seem a bit suspicious that the appointments may be of a political nature, but, for now, I think we should give UEFA and Frappart the benefit of the doubt that UEFA actually does think her qualifications equal that of her male counterparts.

      Delete
    2. The best way is to compare with other French referees and their domestic appointments. If we look at Champions League appointments, she should be a top 5 ref in France. I don't think that's the case, based on appointments.

      Delete
    3. True, but it is also possible France is the one who is wrong.

      Delete
    4. Is it true that, starting in 2021, there will only be one list for FIFA referees (men and women combined), as opposed to separate men's and women's lists? If that is the case, will the women referees have to pass the same fitness test as the men referees, with the same reference times?

      Delete
    5. Yes that is true regarding the merged FIFA lists. I'm not sure what will happen with the fitness requirements.

I do like the change though. There is no reason to separate the two lists, in my opinion; men and women should both be available to officiate games of both genders.

      Delete
    6. The reason for separate lists was exactly the fitness requirements. One list should have identical requirements. Same rights to referee any gamed should be based on same requirements and qualifications.

      Delete
  18. Regarding Frappart, I wonder one thing: why doesnt she have female ARs? I am sure that there are some good female assistants in France, let alone in Europe, that could participate in men competitions.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Non of French female assistant referees is officiating in First league, I think that is the reason. That is why only Frappart and Monzul are getting male matches. Monzul however does have female assistants since they are officiating on First Ukraine league.

      Delete
  19. One thing is still not mentioned in the discussion about the appointment of Frappart. Is it possible within the guidelines of the UEFA? As we all know there are different refereeing groups with a set of competitions matching the group. So Elite will mostly do CL; Gr 1 EL etc. How is this with the matches for womens elite? Is men's CL already been added as possible matches for all these referees?

And the other way around. Most competition formats/regulations have a paragraph in where is mentioned which level of referee is eligble to do a match. For example here in the Netherlands not every dutch FA referee can is allowed to handle a match on top amateur level. There is minimum level described for this. How is this within UEFA? Is there a rule for CL that states that referees need to have a certain level?

I have nothing personal against any of the women referees who get an appointment and whish them all the best and great matches on every level.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In UEFA, there isn't any written rule about that.

      Delete
    2. There are actually several UEFA documents (Referee Terms and Conditions, Referee Guidelines, Champions League Handbook, etc), but they were not made by UEFA in the last 5 years or so. If someone has access to them, maybe could let us know the details?

      Delete
    6. Interesting, and makes for quite a unique-looking assignment.

What do you guys think about a remote VAR? I think in-stadium is preferable, but a remote office would make it easier to get the infrastructure to all stadiums (important for Europa League especially).

      Delete
    7. An advantage of a central location would be, that UEFA can do short meetings with all appointed VARs before and/or after the matches to discuss situations and guidelines. This should help with uniformity.
It's probably also easier in terms of replacements. One could have one backup team (including operators) ready in Nyon for the three CL/EL days, which is used, where necessary.
VARs could also be used on consecutive days more easily.

  22. The situation of group B for next week's games is a real problem for Rosetti, indeed all big names have been alredy appointed in this group, in addition Skomina is out for injury and Italian / Spanish / German referees can't be there.
There is only Marciniak as last option, but we gave two games to cover.
I think that we will have an extra-ordinary appointment either in Milan or Madrid, with a referee appearing again in the same group.
    Marciniak and...?

    1. Oliver should be possible.

      Delete
    2. Yes Oliver only option, but in a game we have an Italian team at its last chance (people will remember Real - Juventus) in the other game we have Real... well, for sure would be a very brave appointment by Rosetti. I wouldn't bet on Oliver I rather think we will have another choice.

      Delete
    3. Let me suggest a very provocative appointment, although I myself honestly do not see it coming, yet will write it down here anyway. In previous years, it was quite common that a referee on the borderline to be selected for a major tournament got a "big last test" game. It could be the case this time again with a ref considered for Euro. So, in case of a successful performance tonight, my crazy suggestion is another Italian-Ukrainian game (Inter-Shakhtar) for... Stephanie Frappart. :-)

      Delete
    4. Turpin or Kuipers seem likely to me. Indeed, they have already officiated in Group B but there has been some space between their last games.

      Delete
    5. Soares Dias would make a significant step in case of such appointment, I think he could handle Inter - Shakhtar with Marciniak in Madrid. But today he has Sevilla - Chelsea, valid only for first and second place in the group (not important for committee) and with VAR test. Would be a totally different appointment in a week, very difficult to happen.

      Delete
    6. Çakir had Gladbach-Shakthar last week

      Delete
    7. Or opt for an extraordinary appointment or Soares Dias seems to viable. He needs a game like this to gain space within the big names.

      Delete
    8. My predictions Group B :

Real Madrid - Borussia M'Gladbach : Szymon Marciniak (POL)

Internazionale Milano - Shakthar Donezk : Michael Oliver (ENG)

      Delete
    9. Well as long as the italian team involved isn't Juve then Oliver should be fine and also he should be fine for any Real Madrid match because the whole brouhaha was all about decision against Juventus, nothing really against Madrid. That being said, I expect a Tobias Stieler esque appointment between Liverpool vs Ajax, I expect such appointment in that group.

      Delete
    10. Brych was surely kept for an important match on MD6

      Delete
    11. My prediction: Kuipers in Madrid and Marciniak in Milan

  23. 17 ´ : Collum showed again that he haven’t skills to be Top Elite referee as Kuipers or Cakir and Skomina. Penalty appeal (IMO clear one), at least OFR needed and Tierney is sleeping. And just after, very important foul by Krasnodar player (at least YC minimum) and no reaction by Scottish ref...poor management here...

    ReplyDelete
  24. 23 ‘ : both correct YC for Nzonzi and Ramirez but i wonder how it’ s possible to not check action like PK appeal at 17...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Collum is better now. Third YC for Wanderson. Good one.

    ReplyDelete
  26. IMO while more a penalty than not the incident in 17' is supportable play on, correct no intervention from Tierney. However very clear reckless yellow card missed in build up by Collum. 3 YC issued all correct and no other issues. 8.3 level performance so far IMO

    1. Disagree about no VAR intervention. Concerning Rennes’s history in CL with PK decisions and vital importance of the match, I tend clearly for an OFR here. Agree about others words ! ;)

  27. 54’: now very very harsh YC for Siliki...was more simple foul than YC here. Inconsistent disciplinary control by Collum.

  28. I have to disagree and say I don’t think it was a penalty. I absolutely do agree that he is not an elite referee. His close relationship with Mr Dallas being the only reason he is there. This performance again highlights his lack of awareness, positional sense and speed, acceptance from players and nervousness.

His season in Scotland has been disastrous but his last two appointments in Europe must have been considered acceptable by Uefa and allowed this return to champions league.

  29. Extremely soft YC for Upamecano by del Cerro Grande, who shows problems in making the difference between fouls and hard, but fair attacks. Arrogant approach to players. He does not convince me at all.

    2. Yellow card given, UB or VC?

    3. You already know my opinion... I agree with VAR, this should have been RC.

      Delete
    4. I personally would have prefer RC here. Not excessive force is irrevelant in a headbutt. But I think Orsato was thinking about not falling for Paredes' vicious and malicious reaction.

      Delete
    5. IMO YC is supportable call there, RC would be to harsh for me...

      Delete
    6. Agree. For me is red card for Fred. I think Orsato
does not count as violent acts but a bit of a head butt.

      Delete
    7. "The force is negligible" must be his argument according to the LotG.
I also would prefer a RC here.

      Delete
    8. Yes but the whole thing started with the missed elbow just before. The rest is a result of that missed whistle

      Delete
    9. I agree YC is supportable I've rewatched the situation a couple times for me RC would be harsh

      Delete
  31. Missed RC by Orsato. Absolutely uncomprehensible decision, clear violent conduct !!!

  32. Very strange decision to give a yc to Fred. And he only watch the screen for 2 seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I disagree. YC is fine as the opponent totally exaggerates the contact and tries to 'provoke' a RC. It's an unsporting behaviour which correctly leads to a caution. It's not a headbutt.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Even if the opposent tried to provoke the contact, it is a headbutt and should be punished by a RC IMO

      Delete
    2. I tend to feel arrogance from Orsato there because that decision is inexplicable

      Delete
    3. It would be, but it is not in my view. It's a head-to-head situation but not an action towards the opponent's head. That is why a YC is correct for me.

      Delete
    4. If arrogance there is, why? VAR shows him a situation he missed, not one he judged differently. It would be absolutely unexplainable, it's a missed incident more than a clear and obvious error

      Delete
    5. 82 'YC for Van de Beek for the reckless attack

      Delete
  34. Correct penalty by Kulbakov.
No card (SPA) is also acceptable, but borderline to YC (DOGSO) there, I think.

  35. Wrong YC now for Paredes and YC missed for Fred who shouldn’t be here... Terrible refereeing so far

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree. Fred is the most happiest man on the pitch tonight

      Delete
    2. Difficult situation. Live it looked like a clearly reckless tackling by Paredes. In the replays the tackling looked less bad - and Fred stepped on his foot. But can he really be blamed for that or was it only bad luck - I am not sure.

      Delete
    3. Not an easy interpretation IMO. Overall Fred plays the ball and Paredes commits the foul. This was my impression on live and at normal speed replay. However, Fred also hits Paredes. No protests at all by Paredes when he gets yellow card, I am sure that at normal speed everyone thought it was Paredes' foul.

      Delete
    4. Never second YC to me. Paredes tackles into Fred and is stamped on his foot by the English player. It‘s not Fred‘s fault when Paredes tackles into him.

  36. During WC 2014, one could at least console himself knowing that UEFA games would be properly officiated once the tournament ended. And to UEFA's credit, for two seasons they did manage to resist 'Busacca-ism' and offer sensible refereeing in their games.

Now, week after week I really can't believe what I see in UEFA-officiated games. It's unbelievable that Orsato didn't dismiss Fred after OFR (whatever some commenters say, sorry). It's a real shame they sold themselves out in my opinion.

    1. I fully agree, that's my view as well, and the recent trend is definitely shocking, if you ask me. We are not so far away from abolishing directly all red cards just to keep all players on the field and to allow them everything.

      Delete
  37. Interesting situation with Borussia 1-0. Good assessment by AR1, the player who scored was ONSIDE, but there was another player in offside who was about to get the ball. Did he influence the opponent with his presence by impeding him to reach the ball? An OFR wouldn't have been 100% wrong, but in this case offide would be extremely harsh and just "on paper" decision... the effects were not so much clear, so I agree with final choice.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Orsato having a terrible night so far two awful calls, both involving Fred who shouldn’t be on the pitch right now, for violent conduct which he should’ve got red card for. Then gave a caution to Paredes when it was cruelly Fred who committed the foul which he could’ve easily got a second yellow card for.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's not arrogance from Orsato the YC is very supportable the contact doesn't rise to the level of VC. It's more a head bump then a head butt

    ReplyDelete
  40. Orsato is an absolute disaster tonight. Really sorry to say that, but Im not seeing any control and a real shame that fred is still on the pitch with 2 fouls worthy of a RC...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Missed VC by Orsato in 44' against Neymar? What do you say, intentional step on Neymar's ankle or accidental?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Please... according to some commenters there should be a red card for everything and violent conduct every time players touch each other

      Delete
    2. Actually, it seems that while sitting in the ground Neymar pushed McTominay who fell stepping on his opponent. I consider this as accidental personally

      Delete
    3. Doesn't look that accidental to me, because he knows Neymar's position and his reaction was not, what you would expect after an accident (e.g. an apology...)
But nearly impossible to be sure about that - and you should be that for a RC.

Interestingly, although we mostly consider it, the LotG actually don't require intention for violent conduct. It does only require "excessive force" and strictly by the wording it is irrelevant, whether that force is deliberate or accidental.

  42. Terrible decision in Dortmund by Lahoz's team about offside incident. No VAR intervention...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Good penalty decision by Gozübüyük. I can imagine that it was not easy to detect the step on the attacker's foot as the other defender clearly played the ball.

    1. Agreed, but should have been a caution as well. Immediately after half-time a correctly disallowed goal for Zenit for scoring with the arm, where a caution would also be appropriate.

  44. Foul on Marquinhos not whistled, offside of Cavani not raised and it results in a YC for Verratti... A complete disaster

    ReplyDelete
  45. So :
    - foul missed by Orsato on Marquinhos (blood at face) : YC missed
    - obvious offside after (clear one) and consequently YC for Verrati.
Sorry but Orsato is completely poor today...

  57. Correct penalty to Chelsea by Soares Dias

    ReplyDelete
  58. It seems like a good match for Gozübüyük with several important decisions without help of VAR. And he changed his manners, he got much better.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Very long OFR by Soares Dias but then no penalty for handball.
One can understand the reasons behind this choice (deflection on another part of the body before, player trying a tackle), but question is: was that VAR stuff? I think rather wrong intervention there...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Wrong Decision by Dias - clear penalty missed, even after VAR.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Actually I disagree this has been a really difficult game to officiate and Orsato has done an admirable job right know I would say 8.5

    ReplyDelete
  62. Why on earth has Dias not given another penalty to Chelsea after VAR review?!? Arm is above the shoulder and it doesn't come directly from the players own foot. You can debate whether you like the rule but by the law it is 100% a penalty. Is a team already being 4-0 down now a reason not to give a penalty?

  63. It is not clear second yellow... Must be clear..
