    4. Not a PK for me. Arms not above the shoulder, normal walking movement. You could argue the ball was long enough in the air for him to ajust, but couldn't keep his eyes on the ball for the whole flight, because there was a header-challenge in front of him.

      Delete
    5. Totally agree with David, correct play on.

      Delete
    6. @Modern < By the Book: I think you may have mixed up attacker and defender. The question of PK is about a possible handball after.

      Delete
    7. IMO no penalty. Arm in a walking movement, not signifcantly streched away.

      Delete
    8. I did indeed get the teams mixed up. My mistake.
No PK for me either. Arm is technically in a "natural" position and makes no movement towards or away from the ball. The arm is kind of just there.
Me personally as a "smart" and "tactical" referee. I would actually whistle a foul against the attacking team for the reasons I had expressed previously in my now deleted comment.

  2. Looking at the pairings. I'm disappointed that many of the "top" women's teams have been drawn to face each other at such an early stage.
Don't know how many fellow writers watch any of these matches. But they are quite entertaining. The football is more pure and honest as the women tend not to employ all the "gamesmanship" that the men do.

  3. Only 3 second category referees: Guteva, Shukrula and Pejković. Could this be a sign of possible promotion in first?

Bas Nijhuis had a very challenging ARIS - PAOK match. He had 3 penalty area decisions to evaluate.

    1. Not the best game from the referee IMO.
1st: Not a PK, GK gets the ball, would want VAR intervention here.
2nd: rightly taken back, attacker collapses before the challenge.
3rd: GK clatteres attacker without getting the ball, possible handball (if it hits the defender hand first, PK for me. Not the best angle, would like a second angle to be 100%)
Thanks for the clips, your thoughts edward?

      Delete
    2. 1st. Clear PK. Attacket got the ball first which you can see on replay..
2nd. Correct to change decision. No penalty IMO Correct VAR intervention.

      Delete
    3. IMO
1 - Supportable penalty call, as the attacker reaches the ball at first.
2 - No penalty, mandatory VAR intervention. The attacker goes to ground before contact is made.
3 - Difficult to assess, borderline for me. I would prefer play-on here.

    2. Come on. Red card after OFR and very difficult to assess without slow motion. Benoit Bastien was excellent all over the match. Very convincing performance by his team.

      Delete
    3. For the action you mentioned, never a red card. Offensive push front of the defender and YC as correct assessment.

      Delete
    4. Ok, I watched This video again, and sory my mistake :)

      Delete
    5. Agree with @Referee analyst. I don't see any argument in favor of a RC for the action you mentioned. Excellent Benoît Bastien tonight, especially in foul detection, card management and feeling of the game.

      Delete
    6. RC for Thiago Mendes (foul on Neymar) reminded me of Ekberg's RC in AUT-SRB U21.

      Delete
    7. Never a RC here, good decision.

      Delete
    8. Do you mean the foul of Mendes which caused the injury of Neymar? IMO never a RC

      Delete
    9. IMO Mendes tackle on Neymar endangers the safety of an opponent. So it must be punished by a RC.

    10. It seems that League 1 specifically want to get rid of these kind of scizor challenges. Similiar one LOSC-Rennes, 43', Turpin gave a red aswell. Here is the link: https://youtu.be/ouSSVDPU9cQ?t=60

    12. Ligue 1 - the only top league that care about safety of the players! It's excellent to see VAR intervention there. My biggest admiration to those in charge of French refereeing!

      Delete
    13. @David, indeed they seem to do. But IMO, this is also no RC (the one in Lille-Rennes). Think it's a interpretation thing.

      Delete
    14. Just my opinion, but IMO the RC is absolutely mandatory in both cases.

      Delete
    15. Agree with my fellow. Mandatory RC in both cases.

      Delete
    16. IMO both scenes are borderline, but I prefer YCs in both scenes. The health of the opponent is not signifcantly endangered and the hitting point isn't too bad.
A VAR intervention for scenes like Lyon - Paris is awful, if you ask me.

      Delete
    17. "The health of the opponent is not signifcantly endangered"

uh, what? these kind of tackles are one of the most dangerous in football...

      Delete
    18. Flip - did you see how serious Neymar's injury could be from that tackle? I'm shocked a consensus of refereeing people isn't that these two situations are very clear red cards (see FRACHE in UEFA RAP et al.).

  14. From serie A game Bologna - Roma:
    https://streamja.com/A0Jj6
Red card originally issued by referee was changed in YC.
    Correct VAR intervention? No SFP?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. While the straight leg of the Bologna player would be very dangerous if it hit his opponent's shin with loaded studs, the actual contact made with the Roma player is no more than reckless and the tackle is ball-orientated (ie. no tackle 'as an attack').

      Good intervention in my eyes.

      Delete
    2. For me it's the wrong interventon. YC is supportable, as is RC IMO. I don't feel like the offender is in control, could potentially be very dangerous, not just the studs, but the fallow-throug of the body aswell (right foot of Nr.14 is planted)

  17. The CONCACAF Referee Committee has announced the referees and assistant referees that have been selected for the 2020 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL) Final Rounds (The tournament was delayed due to Covid-19). The final seven matches of the tournament will be played December 15-22, at Orlando’s Exploria Stadium. All Match Officials have been following a high-frequency Covid-19 testing regime prior to arriving in Orlando, Florida.

    https://concacaf-cloudinary.corebine.com/concacaf-production/image/upload/v1607817381/championsleage-prod/assets/20_SCCL_List_of_Match_Officials.pdf

As you can see, no referees have been chosen from Mexico or the United States. This makes sense because teams from those two nations tend to dominate the competition. Me personally, I like that referee's from "smaller" nations within CONCACAF get to handle these type of top club matches.

IMO, candidates to handle to Final are: Mario Escobar (GUA), Said Martinez (HON), or Ivan Barton (SLV). But we'll see how things play out on the pitch.

    1. IMO, I'm not whistling for a PK based on the available images. The defender seems to only make contact with the ball which in turn makes contact with the attacking players head.
With that said, I would however call an IFK (no caution) against the defender for Playing in a Dangerous Manner. I would argue that the boot has less "right" to be at that height than the head does.

      Delete
    2. IMO the decision is absolutely correct.

      Delete
    3. for me good use of VAR. No RC because the offender cannot see the movement of the attacker in his blind spot, comming from behind/the side.

  26. Again from the Netherlands, debate whether VAR should intervene in the wrong reason of decision.

    Eredivisie
    FC Twente - AZ:
Referee: Danny Makkelkie / VAR: Dennis Higler
    https://youtu.be/PjWVCyGuYWo?t=701

FC Twente' player defeated AZ's player from behind, the referee gave penalty and YC for DOGSO. The VAR intervened because the position of the foul was outside the penalty aria, then the referee canceled judgment, then geve Freekick and RC for DOGSO.
But after tne Match, the referee said "this was not foul and RC was unjustified." (This RC was canceled by KNVB on Monday.)

Makkelkie: I decided that it was a foul due to legs contact, and that VAR was not a clear error because it was pushing the opponent's back. But looking back at the video, I don't think this is a foul. I didn't want to whistle this.
I would much rather have the VAR said:' There is no contact at the legs, there is light contact on the back, did you see that? Then we might have made a different decision based on the communication. '

VAR cannot intervene for incorrect judgment reasons because according to the protocol there was no reason to do so. But Makkelkie said this happens internationally during the Champions League matches.

Makkelkie: In Zeist they don't want the VAR and the referee to communicate about these kinds of decisions, but that had now offered a solution. If I had known this, it could have led to an on-field review.

VAR-leader of KNVB: Reinold Weidemeijer acknowledged that, in imitation of UEFA, the KNVB may have to see whether the protocol should not be adjusted, so that VAR and referee can also conclave in such situations.

I think this is similar to what happened at Vitesse-PSV in October. At that time, the referee (Nijhuis) gave a penalty when the defender pushed the opponent's player by hand. Buit the penalty was canceled by intervening of VAR(Makkelie) due to the wrong reason of decision.

It would be good for the referee that the VAR could intervene in the wrong reason of decision. But it seems to be more complicated and confusing. In fact, I feel that the full disclosure of communication voice is the only means of transparency.

    1. Interesting topic. I also think it is very confusing for the spectators. It would not mean consistency in the calls though, one time the ref saw in principle what happened and its not enough for VAR, the other time (same situation) he goes to the monitor and changes the decision.
