Opinions on Fifa referee Stuart atwell (ENG) who went to the monitor to check for a handball which he didnt give, and after OFR he didnt give it and according to Manchester United player Luke shaw, Atwell said to maguire "i didnt give it because it would cause to much controversy"

DeleteHope it too for Attwell. The decision was correct IMO. It was a really unfortunate handball. It is possible to give the penalty but this decision is supportable.

DeleteI'm sorry but Attwell is not a competent referee and i'm not surprised if his alleged comments were found to be correct. He was promoted far too quickly a number of years ago and is not a lot better these days.

Very interesting situation, but in my opinion if original decision on the pitch was offside, VAR had absolutely to support that without intervening. All is about keeper, maybe he wouldn't have reached ball but for sure the presence of opponent obstructed his view and his action. Last replay can suggest us that maybe only 1 second before he would have saved ball. In all cases, never black or white, grey area in which VAR can intervene mostly if officials on the pitch miss offside, but in this case, the opposite, to me this intervention is wrong.

DeleteTo be honest, I think the original offside decision was the correct decision. IIRC this situation resembles the disallowed goal in the Borussia M’gladbach vs Internazionale game (CL GS December) very well, and UEFA used that situation to highlight that the goal was correctly disallowed (even a correct VAR-intervention to disallow the goal).

I disagree with Clattenburg, at least one can have a doubt that keeper is influenced. If offside whistled on the pitch, this must remain, I think.

DeleteBut the important question is, whether it was a clear and obvious onside - and he actually doesn't say anything about that, i.e. whether the OFR was justified.

Was the original decision of Aytekin really clearly and obviously wrong? Making a frontal tackle with studs up can easily lead to penalty despite the fact that a ball is played/hit. Probably the referee didn’t perceive the touch of the ball, but for me the penalty could have stood.
DeleteIt's simply a DFB's vision of refereeing. You can call a referee for OFR if you want to cancel a penalty or red card, even if it's far from clear mistake to give it. And it's perfectly OK according to DFB. But try to call a referee for OFR when you think it's SFP he wrongly assessed on the field and you are suspended or fired like Stark. I couldn't believe Pfeifer was so brave in calling Aytekin for OFR in additional time, suggesting there was a violent conduct. Such people like yesterday's anonymous user (Marcello?) must have been very upset seeing the kick being red carded...

What surprises me was Aytekin's lack off gestures. When he goes to the OFR he makes a very, very small camera gesture. After the OFR his gestures were not clear. Not for me, but (I think you can see in the clip) also not for the players.

DeleteVery weak body language by Aytekin, it looks like he is tired of officiating, just bored about what he is doing. I think this is not acceptable for his level, but before the injury I had already noticed that. Maybe it is his character, but you can't give this very lazy imagine of you. About VAR intervention, wrong for mee, in an overall context this is never clear and obvious mistake, clearly, because after ball there was evident contact with opponent and defender can have some faults. But... if DFB wants that, then this must be done for all penalties whistled in all games, and this seems quite impossible if you ask me. You will always find a VAR backing referee just making the assessment that what whistled is not a clear mistake, and that's should be enough. If you act like VAR in this game, you do something like a second refereeing of the game, and that's not good.

Interesting. I see your point, but if Aytekin didn't see that the defender played the ball (what he clearly did and not just by a sliver), he had a wrong perception and based on what VAR sees he would make another decision.
ReplyDeleteIn that sense, this situation is kind of a serious missed incident and Aytekin should have the possibility to look at it again. Also to sell his decision on the field of play. It would be ridiculous if he explained to the players that he didn't notice that the ball was played...

DeleteYour contradicting opinions here (and both sides are shared by many, I think) clearly show, that it can't be a clear and obvious error either way.
DeleteBy the pure text of the VAR protocol and the term itself, a "serious missed incident" are only situations, where the referee hasn't made any assessment, because he completely missed it.
But of course, in practice this "missed incident" is often used (not only in Bundesliga) to justify an intervention, when the referee had a wrong perception of something.
However there are different interpretations between competitions and also between individual VARs, how clear the error has to be in case of a missed incident.
Should he intervene for a 50/50 situation, if the referee was missing an important detail and therefore couldn't make a decision based on all facts? Or only if the VAR thinks, that the original decision would be a mistake? Or...?
Furthermore it doesn't help the acceptance of the VAR, if some 90/10 situations are not reviewed, because it is not 100% clear, while some 70/30 situations are reviewed, because the referee missed something. That is quite hard to understand for players and spectators, especially as we don't hear the communication and/or the exact reasons on TV.
So in my opinion the best solution would be to get rid of "clear and obvious", "missed incident" (and "referee can look at the monitor, whenever he wants") and replace it with the simple condition:
"The VAR recommends an OFR, if he thinks, it is very likely (maybe 85% probability), that the referee will change his opinion, when he sees the picture".
In the analysis process the VAR would be allowed to hear from the referee what he saw and should include this information in the decision to recommend or not recommend an OFR.
Totally agree on Aytekins body language by the way. But it is something he also adopted before his injury. I think he sees himself as the manager of the game and likes to communicate a lot, but I agree that his gestures and movements are not looking very motivated and engaged.
ReplyDeleteHm, my impression is not a lack of motivation or engagement. I would say, that it's just his style and he has learned, that this works best for him. Maybe he just thinks, that he doesn't need the big gestures and quick movements to express his authority and maintain control.
DeleteAnd one has to say he is quite successful with that domestically in the last years. Together with Gräfe (whose style is somewhat similar), he is the most popular among players and the most praised by the media.

DeleteAll decisions fully justified. Great teamwork too, between the ref and AR2 at 72'. Nice to see that NEF36 also gets a (2nd) YC for his part in the 'conflict'. At the top level in Europe you often see these cards being 'forgotten'. I am impressed by how calmly, firmly and clearly the ref takes the decisions without hesitation. Must have been pretty stressful to show 4 RC's in such a big game.
