    1. Yes, the story can continue! Italy and Argentina getting final referees of all WC editions :D
But... in a deeper analysis, this time is very clear to me that this choice is exactly to give something big to Orsato in this tournament, without having chances for the final.
It is perfect because he has the exact required skills to keep everything under control in this game between Qatar and Ecuador, their way of playing, he has a very important task, to show that referees will be strong and they will not tolerate unsporting behavior.
Add the fact that nowadays the opener is seen almost like a final and you can easily explain this choice.

  3. A safe pair of hands in charge it does beg the question and I could be wrong how long did it take to come to this particular appointment in terms of what was being reported earlier in the week, Its also the first time a UEFA referee has been appointed to the opening game since World Cup 1998

  5. This means Irrati will be again VAR of an opening match after Russia v Saudi Arabia in 2018 when Pitana was in charge.
Also Orsato will be at his second opening match of a world cup: in 2018 edition he was AVAR3.

  6. kicker.de reports Orsato with FIFA as source.("This was announced by FIFA on Friday.") So there must be something official somewhere.

  7. Turpin has it in the bag unless France reaches semis

  8. FIFA has officially confirmed Orsato's appointment in his website and social media, however no further info has been given on ARs/FO/VAR.

    2. @Quilava, Too early to give verdicts. I don`t think so, one argument might be that FIFA sent him to a friendly game today. On the other hand, indeed, his recent form was not the best despite of some good performances in Dinamo Zagreb-Chelsea or Denmark-France. But I am very happy with a 4th official appointment (surprisingly not Frappart, right? :)) ) in the opening game, and so will be the media Romania, I already imagine the titles.

  11. An interesting, at least for me, article. Apparently, FIFA is pretty open when it comes to mass mass-media - referees relations. Gazeta Sporturilor, from Romania, has a team in Qatar and today attended at referees` training. Understandable, they wanted to know about their opinions about Hategan. Below is the link, with video and photos. I translated it for you.

    1. Two of the best friends that Ovidiu Hațegan has in the group of referees present at the WC in Qatar, the Dutchman Danny Makkelie and the Italian Massimiliano Iratti, accepted a dialogue with GSP about the terrible situation that the "central" from Arad went through in the spring, when suffered a heart attack, the reason for his absence from the final tournament.
Unlike the Central Commission of Referees from Romania, FIFA is much more open to the press regarding the referees who will be present at the World Championship. It opened their training for media representatives this morning. And the interest was huge. More than 300 journalists, most of them from England and Japan, were at this action.
Not all the referees who got in the lot for Doha participated, and among the absentees was also Istvan Kovacs, the only Romanian present at a World Cup in the last 35 years. He had to officiate a match in a friendly tournament that FIFA called on precisely to keep its referees in shape, but also to acclimate them to the extremely harsh climate in Qatar, especially the very high temperatures.
Pierluigi Collina, head of the Referees Commission within the world forum, agreed to make some of the "central" available to the press to give statements, also surprised by the incredible interest aroused by that action. Almost all the officials in the FIFA commission had their mobile phones out and were filming the crowd of journalists from all over the world.

GSP asked for an interview Danny Makkelie and Massimiliano Irrati, two "central" people closest to Ovidiu Hațegan. Makkelie is also one of the most valuable referees of the moment, and one of the favorites, if Holland does not reach the final stages, to referee one of the two finals. Hațegan missed CM because of the medical problem he had in the spring, when he suffered a heart attack and needed an intervention to put a bypass.

    2. GSP journalist- Danny Makkelie
      - Danny, how is it in Qatar?
      - Sensational conditions, luxury even! Beautiful stadiums, it will be something extraordinary for the fans to attend this World Cup.

      - As I told you, we are from Romania, we are interested in you talking about Hațegan.
      - Ovidiu, yes, he is a good friend of mine, he is part of our family.

      - You know what happened to him!
      - Yes. I was sad to hear that news. I was even sadder when I found out that he wouldn't be able to be here with us, but I'm happy that he survived, especially now that I understand that he is very well. He's back in training, I last saw him at a class I had.

      - What impression did he leave on you when you saw him after the heart attack?
      - He is doing great and I wish him all the best! I also make a prediction in his case.

      - What?
      - I am convinced that in 4 years he will be at the World Championship.

      - Do you know Istvan Kovacs as well?
      - I know him very well too, he is a top referee, otherwise he wouldn't be here. He is very good, he showed his quality in the Champions League. He is certainly happy to be here and I am convinced that Ovidiu is also proud of him.

    3. GSP journalist - Massimiliano Iratti
      - Massimiliano, as an Italian, how do you like the weather here?
      - Pff, very hot, much more than in Italy.

      - Doha, the city, how do you like it?
      - I have nothing to tell you because we basically spend more time in the hotel and at the training ground.

      - Ovidiu Hațegan told us that you know each other well.
      - He is my friend, a really good one. We often talk on the phone.

      - Do you have a message for him?
      - I wish him all the best in the world, but know that there is no need to send him a message from me, because I will call him personally!

      - Where did this friendship come from?
      - He is a very good boy, a special person, and as a referee he would certainly have been here if that accident had not happened to him. The most important thing is that he is still with us and we can talk. Maybe he will be in the center or in the VAR room at the next World Cup.

    4. Who is Danny Makkelie
      -Dutch referee for 39 years
-he works part-time as a police officer
-led the 2020 Europa League final, Sevilla - Inter 3-2
      -it's his first World Championship
-refereed the EC 2020 semi-final, England v Denmark, in which he awarded a controversial penalty from which England scored and qualified for the final, a decision which UEFA's head of referees, Roberto Rosetti, said was very good

There's a lot of Police in Doha, but a better guarded base than the World Cup referee training center probably doesn't exist in all of Qatar!
Incredible: referees guarded like leaders of state!
Access to the training is made only after all journalists pass through filters identical to those in airports, while all cars that slow down or park on or near the streets of the respective arena immediately sound the sirens of the Police cars, which drive them away. In addition, security guards were also placed on the roof of the arena (photo), from where they supervised everything that happened during the training.

I'm slightly surprised WC referees were allowed to have a 'media day' from inside the training camp.

It seems Elfath, Beath, Rappalini were interviewed as well:

    9. I don't think that one is asking for too much if he says that at least they could have reported the correct surname of a referee, it is Irrati, not Iratti, I can't believe that journalists are so easy in their job.

To complete my 21:16 comment, well they almost* corrected completely. If you open the tab you can see at the top of the screen, in tab name, that the mistake still exists. Also the tag at the bottom of the page remained. Once again, sorry that I didn`t notice the error.

    2. Funny moment in the press conference (57:45):

During the questioning, former Spanish referee Eduardo Iturralde González (now working as a refereeing commentator in the radio) was given the microphone and gave the standard introduction of 'name + nationality + media you work for' like «Good evening, I'm Eduardo Iturralde, from Spain, Cadena SER, and-» but Collina interrupted him by saying «You don't need to introduce yourself», we know who you are alredy :DDDD

    5. Interesting how Collina says that there have been no major changes to the laws of the game this year (only the clarification about offside) despite the fact that there is a theoretically important one about the goalkeeper’s positioning on penalty kicks… really excited to see FIFA blatantly ignore the LOTG despite the IFAB being abundantly clear that a goalkeeper is not allowed to be behind his line until the moment the penalty kick is kicked (I hope you can hear the sarcasm here)

    6. i am watching the bit about semi-automated offside and I find it super interesting. I have a sad prediction, though: Qatar 2022 will be the last World Cup where ARs on the field of play are calling offside decisions on their own at all. This technology will be refined and sped up and will give someone on the referee team information about offside positions better than a human trying to run around on the touchlines could. I find this sad, because I love ARing and don’t want to see the job die out (in its traditional form) at the top level of play, but watching this presentation really makes me think that we, in the future, will look back and think at how stupid it was that humans running around trying desperately to stay in line with offside line were trying to make these calls at live speed.

    1. Repeated many times, it seems as FIFA will publish names for the respective games always two days before, like UEFA, but not at a fixed time, so for example today in the day we should have referees for Monday's games.
