  1. Off topic: does anyone know why Victor Carrillo was never appointed in the WC as a main referee? I remember he had great experience and participated in many major tournaments (Copa America, Under20 WC, Under17 WC, CWC....). He was a FIFA referee for over 15 years. Is it because of his capability or other reasons? Thanks!

    1. Carillo was a verrrryyy sober referee and 'relied' on cards - unlike Roldán (Ruiz), nobody was behind him, so he missed out on WC2014. And then Diego Haro from Peru was considered after that.

  3. 13': correct offside call by AR1 and then possible penalty, Tello waited and then he got the input for offside. I think he would have been in doubt whether to whistle or not, but this is just speculation...

  4. Minute 14:00 not clear what Tello whistled after this big chance by Cameroon, I didn't notice any offside?

    1. The offside came on the long ball forward by Cameroon, when the attacker challenged the first Swiss defender to play the ball before the second one messed up and let the attacker through. We don't see the position of the attacker on replay but it's clear that this is what the AR was about to flag for.

It's actually a very interesting delay of the flag. I watched it back and it looks like the AR hesitates a bit, likely receiving input on if the attacker is involved in play. Then he goes into a stance where he is *about* to pop the flag, but then the Swiss defender messes it up and it turns into a quite useful delay (assuming the offside position / offense was not 100% obvious).

And then a very similar challenge to the 13' one, both teetering on pushing / charging but both good no-calls I think, by Tello. (The first of which he signaled no before getting word of the offside.)

    2. Thanks, everything very clear, indeed I thought about an offside not visible during replay. In these cases I think FIFA should be more accurate in showing it.

  5. In 36' the first YC of the game, I think not 100% necessary and rather harsh. Different approach than Rapallini.

    1. I like the YC. I agree that it wasn't 100% necessary but I don't see it as harsh, it was late and really hard. But yes, if the other Argentine had been refereeing, the player would have gotten away with it.

    2. Agree that the foul in context had no mode of playing the ball and it was lazy, but does it meet the threshold for YC? I do not believe so

    3. For "this" World Cup and for how most of the referees (not Rapallini) have used their cards. 100% correct!

  6. I don't like the YC in 36'
A stern warning would be more appropriate imo.

    1. A caution sends more of a message than any amount of stern words could ever manage to do.

  7. Tello is doing well to get into wide positions when needed (14', 39')

  8. Certainly a different approach regarding disciplinary line than Rapallini yesterday, more in line with the general approach at this WC (YC given not being mandatory, but fully supportable for me). Foul detection optimal for this game IMO, letting the game flow and not whistling easy fouls. Seems to be in full control of the game, nothing special to say.

  9. As for the only caution, 19CMR committed rather reckless than careless kick at 29' (broadcaster didn't show whether a warning followed) and another late challenge by him at 36' correctly resulted in a YC being given.

    1. Well, they can enjoy working in their local league only.

  11. Miss foul 50', not a good start in the second half

  12. Second YC absolutely correct, so far an expected level performance by Tello in a not difficult game.

  13. Sometning I don't like:
AR1 is focusing too much on the ball and not on the offside line, so he was 5-6 times off the line (1-2m).

  14. Very interesting possible penalty for handball. For me penalty to be whistled as the ball was expected and the arm position far away from the body. But I can understand why VAR supported because the defender had no orientation.

    1. IMO a 50/50 thing and so supportable to play on. I like his style, clearly being the boss without being too harsh, good foul detection, body language and natural authority.

    2. Indeed, Jonas, very interesting penalty area incident! Expected ball played from a long distance should clearly point towards a penalty but somehow the CMR player wasn't aware of the ball's position.

    3. I would agree that it was a ball played from a long distance that should have been expected, however, given the player's complete lack of awareness, I don't feel it is right or just to punish the player in such a position. It just feels contrary to the spirit of this game. Therefore, a fully supportable play on decision, even preferable for me.

  15. Analysis

The Switzerland 1-0 Cameroon game benefitted from the unfussy approach of its referee, who was Facundo Tello of Argentina. Tello, who faced a normal difficulty afternoon, wasn’t absolutely faultless in this regard (eg. rather missed foul 43’; missed advantage 76’), but any errors in foul recognition were rare. I found the Argentine’s approach to disciplinary measures faultless - he was always ready to jump in, first to show his presence after harder careless infringements (21’, 29’), and then issue cautions when required. He booked three players in this game, and while the yellow at 64’ would be incontravertible for all thirty-six officials in Qatar, I’m not convinced that all refs would have issued the merited sanctions at 36’ and 83’. Perhaps FIFA emphasised the match control point after the four matches yesterday. The largest negative element of this performance was a too-chaotic period at the start of the 2H (50’-53’) where Tello felt rather a ‘passenger’ to procedings, but this is a minor point in the bigger picture. The single most interesting KMI was a penalty appeal by Switzerland in the eighty-third minute (rightly waved off IMO), and when the means to do so is available for me, I’ll add clips of that scene and another from the first half below. To surmise: overall it was an expected level performance by the whole ten man refs team in this not-remarkably-challenging game.
