  1. Analysis of FRAPOL

The rather unlikely Venezuelan referee crew of France vs. Poland had a good afternoon: facing a dynamic game (quite similar to FRADEN), Valenzuela managed to ‘keep up’ both physically and mentally with the fast-paced encounter, and ultimately delivered a solid performance. FIFA must have determined that he could work as a ‘problem-solver’ for Euro-type clashes, an astute observation by Collina/Busacca, for a ref who normally works in one of the world’s card happiest leagues at home. His style was very interesting at this WC (and I write in past tense as I strongly suspect his journey, on the FoP at least, is now over in Qatar). Valenzuela combined a slightly chaotic or at least ‘busy’ exterior with real firmness and emotional ‘distance’ from the players, and for me it is quite impressive he managed to succeed on this level with high-profile teams. His calls/disciplinary weren’t at the TOP in either game, but overall he had a quite sound tournament IMO and can be really proud of what he achieved at WC2022.

Some clips from France vs. Poland follow below:

16min, 25min: Incidents of kicking the ball away, the latter after a freekick given in consultation with the Peruvian fourth official.

27min: Potential freekick for holding and YC for SPA not given.

32min: Wrong caution to Tchouaméni, at most his foul was careless.

36min: Correct no action taken against Upamecano after a careless foul on Szczęsny.

42min: Long-time FIFA linesman Jorge Urrego, who had a very good performance yesterday (8,5-level), detects the violation of Law 4 committed by Koundé, and orders him to remove the item from his playing equipment.

+47min: Valenzuela blows for halftime immediately having awarded a French freekick.

47min: Bereszyński cautioned for SPA. I can live with the decision as you can posit the argument that he didn’t touch the ball *really* out of Dembélé’s possession, but I’m more in the play on camp here.

57min: Goal wiped out correctly - Varane fouls Cash. If he hadn’t though, Giroud’s overhead kick wouldn’t have stood, as the Venezuelan official blew up before the ball went in.

59min: Very good decision - no freekick given to Dembélé for ‘screaming’.

64min: Mbappé was granted an identical penalty by Marco Guida in the Champions League, and by-the-book, could feel hard done-by here. Didactically - the impeding offence of Kiwior was rather clear, but it was Guida who acted contrary to ‘expectations’, not Valenzuela. Tulio Moreno then wrongly perceives an offside (-0,2).

69min: Remarkable and noteworthy use of gestures by Valenzuela.

82min: Lewandowski wasn’t cautioned after this late foul.

88min: Clear booking for Cash given after a blatant tactical foul.

+96min: Not the ideal ending for Venezuelan crew on an ‘impression level’, but all solved correctly by them and no real ‘black mark’ against any official here IMO.

    (MARKS should be 7 - 7 - 6 - (III))

  2. Analysis of ENGSEN

More very VAR good work by the Canadian MLS official Drew Fischer - the block on the header performed by the defenders knee had taken enough pace off the ball to render the following handball not punishable (23’); I wouldn’t want to bet soooo much money that other VMOs at this tournament would have decided the same…

That was the key incident of England vs. Senegal, a perfectly well-officiated game by the ad-hoc CONCACAF crew headed by Iván Barton. The Salvadorian ref handled this game in the same manner as the other two: trying to use the yellow card infrequently as possible, and being very ‘active’ in players management, using talks etc which weren’t always from ‘the textbook’, but definitely succeeded overall. You could ask “was he really in control of his emotions at all times?” and stuff like this (“shut up”), but I wouldn’t go too overboard there.

A borderline stamp at 14’ yielded a warning for SEN no.22, a clear tactical foul ought to have brought a caution on both a ‘by-the-book’ and game mgmt level at 36’ (ENG no.2), whereas an ignored reckless kick at 86’ only fell into the former category. Good booking at 76’, a further one could have followed at 81’, but ultimately nothing like Senegal taking their frustration out in fouls ever really materialised at all. Besides that, really not very much to note about the performance - besides perhaps that Katheryn Nesbitt, contrary to Back and especially Díaz in CRCGER, performed very adequately as AR2. All officials easily each the suffiency in terms of marks (7-7-7 and III).

A great tournament for Iván Barton, at thirty-one years old, surely future WCs beckon for him! :)

    1. First of all, I want to remind you that the whole work I put into this game is voluntarily! Thank you for respecting that. I have no problem with request for putting to nicknames together etc.

Secondly, I need your nickname to have a look into the list to solve your problem. And be reminded that no one forces you to participate in the game and have a look into the "idiot list".

    2. FabGX - I wonder why do you even bother commenting and participating our blog? Mostly your comments are only criticising 'us' in a pretty banal manner, and you should be ashamed of your comment above - Philipp is only a volunteer as he says, very kindly helping us with the prediction game, and you speak like that... :/
