  1. First time since 1992 (Brizio Carter), that a referee is used in QF and SF.
A bit surprising, that Abatti doesn't get a game, but maybe he is planned for a medal game.

  2. SF predictions
USA-GER: Karboubi (MAR) - Kim (KOR) - Valeri (ITA), Coote (ENG), Hategan (ROU)
    BRA-ESP: Yamashita (JPN) - Kawana-Waugh (NZL) - Pu-udom (THA), Al-Marri (QAT), Jacewicz (AUS)

Karboubi had two good GS appointments between top teams, so she should be chosen before Calderas and Kim.
Whether she is ready for a SF is not so clear, so breaking the confederation neutrality with Welch (who should get another game anyway) seems a good alternative.
But this way, Welch remains available for the potential USA-BRA final (where the other main candidates Alves and Penso aren't possible).

    1. Agree with Karboubi, it seems she is on a certain focus and after two OK group stage games I think she can easily get a semifinal, but the appointment of the Japanese referee seems rather unlikely to me, after the mistake she made.Maybe a man in the other semifinal? This would also explain why with some options like Fischer and all the CONMBOL referee, Tantashev got another game.
I would say USA - GER for a Man and Karboubi in BRA - ESP.
      We will see.

    2. Why Yamashita?

      Big mistake in groupstages.
Come on ..... She dont deserve it.

There are plenty of choices to make, but not this one.

      Delete
    3. I thought, it was relatively sure that Yamashita gets one of the remaining matches as the only female top referee, where confederation neutrality is given in every pairing.
      But maybe I am wrong.

I also considered appointing a man, but I am not sure, whether that is politically possible without woman in the men SF. So far, it always was a one-to-one exchange per matchday.
Also, who would that man be?
Falcon already had USA-GER, Abatti is expected in a men medal game, CONCACAF and UEFA referees would not help with neutrality, Tantashev is appointed, Al Naqbi probably too weak. So we have the CAF referees and Kawana-Waugh. If we assume Karboubi, two CAF referees in the SF seems unlikely though. Otherwise Beida could be a good option. And Kawana-Waugh seemed to do alright in the GS, but I am not sure whether he would be seen as a clearly better option than the available women.

    4. I agree with Karoubi & Yamashita seems to have recovered from the mistake and is a logical choice or they may break confed rules and appoint Welch (who I'm sure will get one of the last 4 games).
I'm not sure if a man will be appointed here either.

    5. Valeri has already left France: https://www.facebook.com/valeri.paolo

    6. @Chefren and that should mean his career is over, right? Considering I don't think can both work as leader of VAR project in Greece while continuing referee

      Delete
    7. Yes, he has retired from being an active VAR in serie A.
According to FIFA regulations, he wouldn't be allowed to continue the career, but in recent times we saw some extra ordinary cases, especially among the women, so I don't know whether, at least on paper, he could stay as FIFA VMO - UEFA VAR. Rather not.. of course to focus on the new role he should do only that and I think he will do only that.

      Delete
    8. Paolo Valeri is the new Vice Chairman of the Greek referees committee and in charge of VAR according to an official announcement a few days ago.

    9. Still strange, that one of the top VARs left the tournament after the group stage.

  4. So, long time before the release of such appointments if compared to previous ones and we easily understand why, with Welch, Confederations Rule has been broken. Very likely they didn't want to do it but there weren't options for that game.

    1. Yes you are right.
Yamashita after the first group stage match was no option.

I cant say anythings about the matches of Kim, maybe a youth talent, but in this type of games you need experience

      Delete
    2. Welch was really the obvious alternative if Yamashita wasn't appointed.
So, depending on results, Alves & Penso front runners for last two matches IMO.

      Delete
    3. If Brazil v USA - Olofsson is the likely choice for the Gold Medal match

      Delete
    4. I think indeed Olofsson must be mentioned if Penso not possible. She was observed by Collina and Busacca in quarterfinals, she is a candidate for Men's Worl Cup. This appointment would mean "something" for her, but yes, if we merely look at the technical aspect...

      Delete
    5. I didn't think Olofsson was good in the quarterfinal when it was in fact a very easy game. She missed a bunch of obvious pushes and just let everything go, but perhaps FIFA likes that

      Delete
    6. I think it's possible you'll see Penso on the men's bronze and then one of the male UEFA referees on the women's bronze. Abatti and Oloffson for gold, no matter the teams?

      Delete
    7. well @ usaref - you were right in the Euro's so I'll have no reason to go against those comments!!
      :-)

      Delete
    8. Who @ usaref would take 4th spots in your opinion?
UEFA ref or Waugh with Penso
      Beida with Abbati
Garcia with the UEFA ref (Letexier or Eskas) on bronze.
      Alves with Olofsson

      Delete
    9. To be clear, I had good intel in the Euros. I'm just guessing here. But I still would find it very strange for all the other top women to crossover and then not have Penso do it, when she A) has the most experience with men's matches, B) just did the WWC Final and C) the US blocks her path on the women's side. It just seems too logical but maybe I'm wrong.

For 4ths, I have no idea. But Beida needs to worry about confederational neutrality. I also think it's pretty clear Waugh isn't rated (otherwise he could have had one of the games Tantashev got). I could see Falcon as a 4th and yeah, maybe one of the UEFA guys (but again, neutrality). Maybe Fischer goes with Penso since there is familiarity?

But again, I could be VERY wrong here. These are guesses, not predictions.

      Delete
    10. Fair enough. I do find it odd Penso not used o the mens side when others were.
I think we haven't seen a UEFA ref in the final on the mens side for a while (2012) so can see them do if it's a France v Spain final (Nyberg obvious choice).
For all other combinations - Abatti or Falcon would be my prediction. Outside bet would be Fischer.
The issue is then for me on the women's side as I don't see a CONMEBOL referee appointed if they are on the mens side.
So, unless it's a France v Spain - I can't see Alves doing the final (leaving realistically Penso or Olofsson).

      Delete
  5. I predict Katia Garcia for final. She has experience refereeing both Spain and USA which are likely opponents and has looked good this tournament. Still, she is quite young so I could also see Edina Alves get the game

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't see Garcia refereeing USA in the Final both being CONCACAF tbh

If anything I see her as 4th on the final

  8. After a collision with a player, Tantashev could be replaced by Nyberg.
The Uzbek referee allowed too much in this start of the game by both teams, as it was in previous performances.

    1. Terrible luck for Tantashev :((( really really sorry for him.

FIFA should also heed the message: you ALWAYS run the risk when appointing junior, token female referees as fourth officials (as happened during the group stage).

      Delete
    2. Excellent point Mikael, they avoided "disaster" by a hair. If that was in the group stage instead, a very inexperienced referee would have had to go in and the game would be very difficult.

  12. I remember the first time I heard of Ilgiz Tantashev, he was in the opposite situation: replacing Ravshan Irmatov for extra time of the second leg of the AFC World Cup Qualifying Playoff in 2017. Sad to see him injured, especially in a game which was a big opportunity for him.

Same incident call it at 21min

      Delete
    2. Classic grey area, should have been whistled by referee, correct no VAR intervention. Arguments for calling it, but you can see this also at very borderline. Hard to make comparison with other incident, indeed in 21' it was similar in terms of intensity but remember that a referee sees always things in a different way on the pitch in terms of perception. And penalty area incidents are always under more focus!

    3. By Colina standards it's penalty or not?

  16. Neyberg very overrated he didn't deserve to be 4th today I m very afraid that he will lose control in some moments

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nyberg isn't overrated -- and I think your patrioticism is an obstacle to a fair assessment -- but what I would say is that his style is kind more like 'hovering over the game' rather than 'taking the game by the scruff of the neck', and thus means that the Swede perhaps isn't the best candidate for hot games.

Foul recognition could/should be improved, but imo Nyberg equipped himself well in both Argentina-Morocco and Morocco-Spain (so far).

Another point: FIFA (through IFAB) have to do something about the provocative + off-putting behaviour which routinely takes place prior to penalty executions. It is a huge threat to match control, the same as 'not respecting the distance' in the 1980s, and an edict which says something like "ANY player who doesn't immediately vacate the penalty area as a defender before the penalty execution will be cautioned" or something like that. Otherwise, referees have to act like nightclub bouncers and the spectacle is unedifying and actually unnecessary.

    1. I noticed that as well. Tantashev was there for at least a little bit in the first half. Her whistle tomorrow is, of course, also in Marseille. But she wasn't a listed match official on this game. I wonder if she was in the stadium or if they had to call her in from her hotel room XD

    2. Three 4th officials on this game: Nyberg, Soderqvist and then finally Welch.

  20. Nyberg is Always in doubt for Spain.

    ReplyDelete
  21. If the Swedish was planned for the final, he will not officiate it after the replacement of Tantashev, because he officiated almost the full game. This, apart from the technical performance that was not the best.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm, my opinion is a bit the contrary - Nyberg did pretty well today, especially given the context that he was thrown in unexpectedly (surely match control would have been a very different story without the change :)). It is hard to be fully 'keyed in' to referee such a big/difficult game and I wouldn't criticise him tooooo much for the missed penalty under this aspect, even if the Swede's position was optimal to spot the offence. Regarding my comment above: Nyberg surely learnt a lot about handling hot clashes in the last two weeks! I think he is, to be fair, a very good referee and I'm sure he will be able to take these two remarkable games as a strong experience to bring onto the field in UEFA competitions next season.

  22. 84’ very good job by AR2 Christian Ramirez to delay the ball-out-of-play decision until the “goal” was scored, just in case VAR had to review. Minimal impact but could save the day if he had gotten it wrong.

  23. Pushing befire the hand ball why call for ofr

  25. Better decision penalty but never VAR stuff. But tbh Martinez hasn’t impressed me in the 20 minutes I’ve watched

    ReplyDelete
  26. Very brave Martinez. Well done, this should never be a OFR

    ReplyDelete
  27. Subjective foul before the handball, supportable either way I would say. Not enough for OFR. Martinez’s explanation was very detailed but I couldn’t actually hear what he was saying for most of it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree; imo it was something like 35-65 foul-nofoul, Gonzalez didn’t have clear evidence to intervene (regardless of what Martinez told him was the reason for the defensive freekick). Extremely aggressive behaviour by the Egyptian who bumped the Honduras referee before he announced the OFR decision.

      Delete
    2. Agreed completely, about the 35-65 split and about the Egyptian who bumped the referee. In my opinion, such conduct should always always always be a red card; professional referees are failing their colleagues at the grassroots level by condoning this behavior.

“All’s well that ends well,” though, as the player is sent off for a second yellow now.

      Delete
    3. Handball is always a strong argument, this OFR showed that, but indeed according to the protocol it should be wrong because the original decision by referee was fully supportable.
What I can say is that referee stayed definitely too long time at the monitor, this is hard to be accepted, OK, conplex situation, but so many minutes... once you are convinced about the push, you have just to confirm it. It would have been better to avoid this OFR by Gonzalez, but differently from other fouls, there is always a discussion about a handball.

      Delete
  28. Completely agree with previous comments, very much grey area for the foul on defender. For me better decision is no foul, and therefore penalty, but never VAR stuff

    ReplyDelete
  29. For me There is no foul of player

    1. VAR must not call the referee after free kick

      Delete
  30. So much disent and this known from while said must do something

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's terrible with OFR! The only reason could have been if he had wrong opinion who is taken the ball with the hand, no either chance to give a penalty when the freekick is given! This should have been discussed only between the referee and the VAR-referee without OFR!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Just because you are the captain doesn’t mean you can scream an inch from the referee’s face, Elneny has to be booked. Unacceptable behavior from the whole Egyptian team really.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Looked like #8 of Egypt pushed Martinez in a situation just before he eventually got a YC, shouldn't he already be off?

    ReplyDelete
  34. FWIW I think Martinez has done pretty well here, quite difficult game especially with the behavior of the Egyptian team. He hasn’t missed much. But it is really frustrating that just because he’s already shown, what, 3 or 4 yellows for dissent means he is scared to show more. I don’t think we can blame him personally so much for this, as I doubt FIFA would necessarily support 10 YCs for dissent XD

But IMO this behavior is unacceptable and if Egypt finishes with 7 players on the pitch that’s their problem.

  35. Now that both African teams lost… Beida for the Gold Medal Match?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Would be his third game with Spain, but we know, that FIFA doesn't care much about that, so not impossible.
But I rather think, he will get a game as 4th official at most - and his QF is already a good achievement.
Plus, CAF has some representation in the last games with Karboubi and two national teams already, so not a political must.

      Delete
  36. Drew Fischer or Ramon Abatti for FRA-ESP. I don't think there will be a different choice than this.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think, FIFA will wait with their medal game choices until after the women SF.
If the women final is USA-ESP (most likely case on paper), Alves seems the obvious choice. And in this case, difficult to appoint Abatti for the men final.
If the women final is USA-BRA, the obvious choice is Olofsson. Then probably difficult to have another UEFA referee in the men final - and Abatti would be the main candidate (maybe with Alves as 4th).

    For now, my prediction is
MAR-EGY: Letexier (FRA) - Al Naqbi (UAE) - Brisard (FRA), Al Marri (QAT), Guzman (NCA)
ESP-FRA: Eskas (NOR) - Abatti (BRA) - Dieperink (NED), Carvajal (CHI), Bebek (CRO)

    1. 2 europian in the medal ?
For the women Yamashita , garcia can gets a game maybe bronze or gold medal

      Delete
    2. Yes, as long as no UEFA referee in the women medal games, this should be fine, I think. 3 out of 8 KO games (resp. 5 out of 16 overall) for UEFA doesn't seem too much.

Yamashita (and Fischer) should be out after two games as 4th official. Would be strange management otherwise IMO. Garcia would be deserved, but hard to imagine, that she would be chosen over Penso for any game.

And one additional thought: Based on previous appointments, Falcon could actually be clearly ahead of Abatti in FIFA's eyes and therefore be the real CONMEBOL candidate for another game.

      Delete
    3. Agreed - the result of the women's semi's I think will play a factor .
As I said earlier, France v Spain could be for Eskas potentially (I'd guess Nyberg ruled out and Letexier out obviously).

Beida and one of the CONMEBOL referees seems more likely for me for the last two matches.
I actually can see CONMEBOL referee doing the bronze medal match with Beida doing the gold medal match leaving the door open for Alves on the women's side with Penso (depending on results).

    4. For me
MAR - EGY: Abatti, Letexier, Del Grande, Carvajal, Brisard
ESP - FRA: Beida, Eskas, Deiperink, Benbraham, Al Marri

      Delete
    5. Francois Letexier could be likely to handle the Egypt-Morocco tie?

1992: Spain in main final, Diaz Vega referees 3rd place match
1996: US eliminated earlier, Baharmast referees semifinal
2000: No Australia in finals, Micallef referees 3rd place match
2004: No Greece in finals, Vassaras referees main final
      (no Chinese referee in 2008)
2012: No Britain in finals, Clattenburg referees main final
2016: Brazil in main final, Ricci referees 3rd place match

    1. Unfortunately the videos are -- understandably given the context -- taken down now but youtube had Brian Hall narrating a number of clips on different topics where he talked thru Concacaf's thinking (at that time), and it explained that the best way to face dissent scenes is by standing as a motionless statue and pulling a firm facial expression, as Said Martinez did last night. Elneny's behaviour in +107' is unacceptable and AT A MINIMUM(!) should have resulted in him being cautioned.

      Delete
  39. Thanks for the clip, extremely interesting.
Indeed I think here you can find the very well known CONCACAF approach against protests. It's incredible how much firm and still the referee from Honduras remains. In case of different management, he should have sent off a couple of players, including what happened later. Let's say this is a weak disciplinary management (because at the end the players don't get what they deserve) but maybe a step better, if one can say that, than watching a passive referee who very often is also forced to make backwards movements. The referee showed to resist to pressure and in that way he looked very strong about what was happening. But again, this can't be enough. Unacceptable behaviors by players, as you said.

Then about the second YC, I would have a particular remark, too short whistle for the kind of infringment (a very clear second YC), but that's a minor observation :)

About the penalty, I already commented, but it is possible that in the chaos of penalty area the referee didn't identify correctly what he had whistled in favor of defenders (yes, I know this shouldn't be said, but...), so even more I think in case Martinz couldn't indicate exactly to VAR that he had punished that pushing, it was OK to send to monitor. Given the long time he spent in front of it, I think indeed he hadn't perceived the situation as it had happened. But if we don't focus about the nature of the decision, the defensive free kick, as said, according to protocol, was still a very supportable decision, so no intervention would have been OK as well.

And a final remark about FIFA, Martinez is not the first referee losing the badge from the chest, I think FIFA should work more on the material used to stick it on the kit!

  40. I think that there is still an issue with English VAR. If we exclude Attwell who found a certain consistency in recent times, after very poor periods, we can't definitely find another reliable name like other countries. Several attempts, but just to mention the VARs who accompanied Welch in some games. at first Kavanagh and we all remember his wrong intervention at Women's EURO, now Coote but again I think he made a clear mistake when the English called the referee for that handball. In such situations, Rebecca Welch never showed to be "stronger" than VAR, but it's always difficult, and I also think that the heads of refereeing have some clear ideas about that.
Unless Coote is about to get some medal's games assignments as main VAR, but I think it's very hard.

    1. Incredible that Bebek was appointed again after the apparenly phantom OFR called by him in Egypt-Paraguay, don't you think? If FIFA thought that the intervention was correct, and thus Nyberg was too hasty in waving it off, surely the Swede should have been rejected? The only 'saving' scenario here could be that Bebek-Nyberg only made a big show in order to win more acceptance from Egypt, but that doesn't seem too likely to have been the case.

      Delete
    2. Here is the episode in question from the Egypt-Paraguay quarterfinal:
      www.streambug.io/cv/ed2428

      Delete
    3. Maybe a "no mistake" (rejected by referee) is better than a confirmed mistake after VAR intervention, but of course I agree that same responsibilites must be given to VAR and Bebek was definitely not faultless so far. Still, UEFA VARs are seen better than others by FIFA and Collina, and maybe that's another argument.
I also think that Valeri left during the middle of the tournament just to start his job in Greece, otherwise he would have stayed.

      Delete
    4. This issue about not hearing referee's words after OFR seems impossible to be solved. Can you understand what Nyberg said there?

      Delete
    5. I rewatched the incident a number of times and must revise my view: Bebek WAS justified to call Nyberg under the 'missed incident principle' and allow the Swede to make the call for himself. Watch for the careless treading on the foot of Egypt no5 as he makes the header towards goal. After that, I also think it is fair enough to say "for me it still wasn't enough" as Nyberg did.

SO: I must be fair, Bebek acted in the correct way (for FIFA comps) and was rightly supported for what he did in this scene.

  45. Awful free kick detection in GER-USA and suspiciously onesided.

  46. Many time wasting at these Olympics, definitely too many. Honestly, if the guidelines with very long added times had not been applied, it would have been absolutely unfair to have games ending in that way. In most of cases referees can do absolutely nothing, but just allowing play to continue until all the wasted time is recovered.
