  1. So, curious to see how it will work with the experiment of Football Video Support (VS). No appointed VAR officials, but just the chance for coaches and players to call referees at monitor during the game for specific incidents. I guess in the VAR Room there will be only VAR technicians.

  2. Give me your predictions for the referees of the Nations League matches

    ReplyDelete
  3. Now, with a new format of European tournaments it will be interesting to analyze the appointment strategy. More matches, and almost all matches are important for the points.

I assume that we will see the usual strategy in top matches during the first matchdays: Young Elites like Eskas, Nyberg, Meler. Idem dito in the Nations League. And probably the experienced names with Italian teams again, unfortunately. The nature of the matches could still be “leading”

But where are you going to introduce new names? Previously a potential number 1 (English team) vs 4 in group was the "ideal" match to do that. That is now more difficult now. In principle, every team with a good plan and strategy can surprise and reach the top 24. And all the topteams will strive to end top 8. Every match is equally important. Therefore, there “could” be even more focus on referee performances by the media. On the other hand, with so many games to be played, the focus on referees by media could also decrease in some way. Except for the final rounds.

And to what extent will meritocracy remain relevant, if so many matches are to be played. Well…

  4. And then the situation per country, in the run-up to the FIFA tournaments in 25-26:
    - Germany: It seems that all refs will start from scratch again and Siebert/Zwayer (and even Stieler?) will get a fair chance. No foregone conclusion if you ask me.
    - England: Taylor will not see any Italian or German teams for the time being, I suspect. Will the focus now shift to Oliver? Although, the fact that Taylor continues with his 45 y.o. could imply that he might still get a chance to end his career with a final?
    - Italian refs: also interesting, there is not one that stands out. The domestic performances will be leading in the coming period, which is also quite unfair in some way. Take Vincic and Kovacs as example: I have seen poor matches domestically, but it never has consequences.
    - Spain: the same applies. No one stands out at the moment and I think they will all get a fair chance.
    - Netherlands: The main question is, what is Makkelie's status in Nyon after the Euros. Can he be a Turpin 2022 or is he another referee destroyed by Ceferin. And will they carefully shift the focus to Gozubuyuk (you never know he passes the tests) or even Lindhout. The last European play-off rounds suggest that the focus will eventually shift to other referees imo.
    - And when will Jovanovic get another chance? Quite unfair how he’s been treated

  5. Very good remarks, Ref88.
Let me say at first that I dislike the new format of Champions League group stage. While i fully agree on the fact that playing only against three teams until last season was definittely a limited experience, and in most of cases the fortune of a team was rather decided by the draw before the season, on the other side I don't understand what is the meaning of having one single and full championship but all teams don't play against al the others. Before discovering the format yesterday, I thought it was different. You play only against a limited number of teams, but yes, more than the previous very small group stage, but you have the table like you play against all the others?
The solution would have been to have three or four bigger groups, but with all teams playing against each other and a real championship.
Having said that, to follow another comment with short words about the changes of refereeing, mandatory for managing this new format.

  6. The very well known management by committee, lasting from Collina times and maybe even before him, is the following: appointments for MD1 and MD2 together, then MD3 and MD4. Finally MD5 with some chances to wait for MD6. Now I think at least until December games, and so indeed MD6 in the new format, this one can be mostly kept, but they will have to add the last step, with appointments for MD7 and 8. The most important thing coming out from this new Champions League edition, and well, one could maybe even think that Rosetti will be more than relieved for that, is that nationality's issue will be finally over. With a big league, no focus on the other teams at least in the early games, then, when coming to possible qualification, but only in the last rounds, more attention could be paid to that, but still, with so many spots for qualifying this aspect loses most of its meaning. So: green light mostly for all referees in all games. Nevertheless, the contrary aspect, one could say, will be the fact that unimportant games at least until the MD7 and/or 8, will be very hard to find, and committee will have to make by far more assignments, sending definitely new Category 1 officials to this stage. It will be mandatory, they don't have the number to cover everything with Elite and it will be even more difficult with many games in Europa League as well. As for Conference, not an issue but rather a very good thing because I think with all such games it will be opened even to Category 2 never appointed before.
Generally, we could also say that the atmosphere in this big Champions League of clubs will be less exclusive of the small groups of past years, with a trend to have more football, but not all at the same level (this is a personal opinion, in addition to a fact).
Which aspects will be prevailing for committee's management? The negative or the positive ones? We will see.

    2. Dabanović still 42, 43 will have in I think December. Yes, at the end, better than Guida who is also promoted with 42/43.

    4. Actually there might be even more places available compared to the last list:
Kulbakov, Orsato and Soares Dias retired
Karasev out for a long time
Hategan and Sidiropoulos without Elite level games in recent times

Kabakov, Pinheiro and Rumsas should be added to the promotion candidates.

    5. Also Collum has left the list; I guess that a name from Portugal (Pinheiro or Nobre) is mandatory; probably Mariani, Obrenovic and Rumsas

  13. Early CL MD1 predictions
    Juventus - Eindhoven: Oliver (Attwell)
    Bern - Villa: Marciniak (Kwiatkowski)
    Bayern - Zagreb: Mariani (Chiffi)
    Real - Stuttgart: Balakin (Ulusoy)
    Milan - Liverpool: Letexier (Brisard)
    Sporting - Lille: Kruzliak (Higler)
    Bologna - Donetsk: Bastien (Millot)
    Sparta - Salzburg: Jovanovic (Bebek)
ManCity - Inter: Nyberg (van Boekel)
    Paris - Girona: Guida (Dankert)
Brugge - Dortmund: Massa (di Paolo)
    Celtic - Bratislava: Kabakov (Stoyanov)
    Feyenoord - Leverkusen: Eskas (Martinez)
Red Star - Benfica: Lambrechts (Delajod)
    Atalanta - Arsenal: Pinheiro (Martins)
    Atletico - Leipzig: Vincic (Kajtazovic)
    Monaco - Barcelona: Makkelie (Dieperink)
    Brest - Graz: Siebert (Dingert)

Following the discussions above, I think, MD1/2 could still be appointed together, therefore I used approx. half of the available Elite referees here.
Some challenging tests for promising First group referees in there and also some top referees on low profile games, that might be important for reaching top 24 though.
But of course, plenty of options here with the lack of country restrictions caused by the groups.
(And yes, I think Oliver/Juventus is possible again after more than 5 years...)

  14. Yes, the new format of UEFA tournaments clearly has its pros and cons.

A big advantage is more flexibility in the appointment of referees. Last year Gil Manzano was "forced" to see PSG twice in a short period of time. That can be easily avoided. Of course there are always things that may have to be prevented, e.g. Oliver refereeing a direct competitor of Newcastle for Top-8 on MD8. But at the same time, a team is no longer dependent on just “one” other game, there are several games that could influence the final standings, so the appearance of bias is more negligible than ever imo.

What I also like is that the R16 draw is seeded. It seems that No. 1-2 of the table will play in R16 against a lower ranked team on the table, while number 7-8 will meet No. 9-10 early. And the top ranked teams slot into a more favorable part of the schedule. Number 1 and 2 will also avoid each other until the final. Sounds fair.

Pretty sure that we will see the most experienced referees with i) Italian teams ii) Mid-table teams battling for a top-24 spot, and iii) boarderline top-8 teams in away games. Tough Europa League games notwithstanding - I think we should not underestimate those fixtures as well. Can be more challenging on the pitch than the average UCL game.

I think the overcrowded schedule and the players' physical resilience are a big disadvantage though. It can't be good, players always want to play and must be protected. And for teams from smaller competitions, the loaded calender can heavily influence their ranking in domestic competition as well. Not all teams can line-up a B-team like Manchester City…
Furthermore, the physical resilience of the referees must also be managed properly, to prevent injuries etc.

In addition, I looked at the schedule and imo it seems "favorable" for the big teams from pot 1. They avoid the biggest opponents in MD 1-2 (and MD3 except for Barcelona-Bayern), and in MD8 as well, which allows them to (theoretically!) have a flying start and finish the job at the end. The best fixtures take place MD4-MD7. The question is how spectacular and attractive these topgames will be, especially when both teams are already in a good position and have a tough calendar domestically. [For example Liverpool plays against Real Madrid and only a few days later against Man. City]]

“Fun fact”: Opta released that PSG has the toughest opponents based on stats. German teams have a good draw, which is nice considering that the final is in München. :)

Still not clear to me how it works because it is said that all goals are checked by VAR, but that's like the normal VAR. Still unknown about the calls by players and coaches.
Starting from 00:55 an OFR in Martincic game, clear foul before a goal. After the OFR, the Crotian is finally (for me) the first referee I can fully understand what he / she says...

    1. The fourth official reviews all goals on the monitor, in this case Amedome called Martincic to review. It also answers the question above about experienced referees as reserves.
