  1. What are the promising German referees?

    Jablonski and Osmers?

After Markus Merk and Herbert Fandel is it a little bit backwards.
Zwayer, Siebert, Aytekin and Stieler are not at the level off Merk and Fandel.

    1. Yes, surely Jablonski, who is performing very well in Bundesliga and is also making quick progress in Europe.
Osmers looks on a good path to a CL debut this season, so normally those two should be the next German Elite referees.
Then Schlager and Schröder also have to be mentioned, who have shown their talent, but still lack consistency.
Schröder does the BL opening match tomorrow BTW.

If you talk about "after Merk and Fandel", you have to mention Stark and Brych, who were quite successful on the international level as well.
So it's more "after Stark and Brych".
But then Zwayer just had a EURO SF and has good chances for European finals and a WC participation in the next years. So he could still reach the top level of achievements.
And Siebert with three big tournaments at the age of 40 also has this chance.

  2. By the way, Kovacs apointment is a replacement? Because, he never worked with Atwell. I don’t remember a game Kovacs with Atwell.

  3. Only thing of note in Plzen so far is what looks like 2 crossed signals. A goal kick where the AR signalled gk them corner then ultimately go correctly.
Then a throw in where jablonski signalled one way then the other

  4. Two RC in first half by Gishamer, both after VAR intervention. DOGSO and SFP.

    1. He broke protocol when giving first RC. He didn't even whistled foul, but immediately gave RC without OFR.

      Delete
    2. IMO, he would give a RC immediately, but AR2 flagged offside. After VAR checked it and confirmed onside, Gishamer send the defender off.

  5. Ajax fortunate in Białystok for not conceding a penalty after a quite strong holding in the Amsterdam penalty area (‘32).

    1. Bad performance of Obrenovic

Now way yellow card of Taylor (Ajax). What a referee, Total not a football background.
This wasnt a yellow card, by far.

    2. Now a completly wrong yellow card for Taylor (ajax)

    3. And in 48’ a plainly wrong caution to AJA#8, no reckless challenge whatsoever.

    4. And he continues... no foul of Hato.
Oh my gosh, what a referee

    5. O hell. What a referee. Now completly wrong free kick and yellow. What a disaster

    6. A remarkable foul balance anyways, with 0 (JAG) to 6 (AJA) fouls called so far (‘58)

    7. In 68’ correct penalty whistled for Ajax after a late and reckless tackle by JAG#17.

      Delete
    8. Another penalty for Ajax in 77’ after a minimal knee-to-foot contact, resulting in AJA#3 tripping himself. Correct penalty though.
Fun fact: 2 Polish fouls sanctioned, both penalties.

  6. Just awful performance from Sebastian Gishamer. Incredible number of mistakes, he literally doesn't see anything. His ARs nothing better. Hem is disgrace! And after every mistake from him, he gave cards to justify it. Instead of two clear YC for Maccabi, he have 2 YCs for protests to TSC player. This had to be his last game in Europe.

  7. Have seen some flashes of Obrenovič his game in Białystok. Not really impressed tbh, my observation is that he officiated the game based on sensations (too many times fooled by reaction of players), failed to apply a clear line in what was a fair game with just 12 fouls.

Two wrong yellow cards issued to Ajax players imo. A clean tackle on the ball, and the other was more a foul by the Polish defender who hurt himself and got the freekick :D

Two penalty kicks awarded to Ajax, both soft in my eyes. On my local television, the first one was called a dive. Maybe there was a small contact however players reaction was exaggerated. Second penalty same, soft, probably supportable. He issued a YC, but it wasn’t reckless imo (careless at max). Perhaps a balancing card thing..?

  8. Today, later on, I will try to look and post all the incidents you mentioned both in this discussion and in Conference League.
Definitely many things to be reviewed...

  9. I also watched Obrenovic. Strange thing is: he didn't do that much WRONG, but he never convinced me at all. Not in the way he spoke with players, not in the way he gave the penalties. It was all a bit flat. For me, based on this match, he needs to work on his presentation.

  10. Here the red cards in Gishamer game:

    DOGSO
    https://streambug.org/cv/688c12

    SFP
    https://streambug.org/cv/959b66

Thanks to Daniel G. for the explanation about DOGSO, otherwise the procedure wouldn't be clear. So referee waited VAR because AR2 had wrongly reported offside and he sent off player then without needing to watch because he had already made this assesment himslef (VAR signal before card just to communicate about the annulled offside).

    1. Very problematic game to handle, but after all this chaos and standard Copa Libertadores/Sudamericana match,Roldan and teams can be satisfied with refereeing performance.

Mixed criterium, not the same throughout whole match.

Sometimes too lenient, sometimes too giving but looks like he needed to b be like that in this ver, challenging match.

  13. Let's start with Obrenovic clips.
    32' Penalty area incident
    https://streambug.org/cv/d208a1
We have the continuative holding and then the push also by other defender... a penalty that you should whistle in my opinion, because the effects are very evident, BUT... about VAR intervention, the key should be that the attacker used his arm to make contact with first defender as well, and then he also made a holding to the second defender who then pushed him. I think that without these actions by attacker, VAR would have called. You must add to that the signals by Obrenovic who made clear he had assessed according to his opinion. Nevertheless, to me, a penalty that should have been whistled, as said, but impossible to classify as 100% very clear one for the mentioned reasons. All in all I could think that VAR had its arguments to stay silent, but referee should have taken the other decision.
    Further incidents to follow later.

    1. 48' YC for reckless challenge, wrong perception by referee who in my opinion thought about a very different point of impact
      https://streambug.org/cv/3d9737

55' YC for reckless / SPA
I think that in this case, differently from the previous, there are argument for calling it due to sliding tackle, after the original contact with ball, but play on wouldn't have been too much questioned.
      https://streambug.org/cv/c70d66

68' Penalty and YC for reckless challenge
      https://streambug.org/cv/6a11c4
Correct decision by referee, maybe another referee wouldn't have booked the player, the yellow for reckless is very rare inside the box, but I think you can't question the decision too much.

      77' Penalty for careless foul
      https://streambug.org/cv/3a8aec
A classic situation in which it looks nothing, but clearly there was a small contact to make attacker fall. I think the penalty was called by AR1.

Based on the clips, I don't think that this was a very poor performance by referee, but I think he could indeed reflect more on the reality in front of his eyes before taking some "by book" decisions, having a more flexible and open approach to a game, this could come with the experience. It was a coincidence that most of crucial decisions went against Polish side, but surely the YCs issued to Ajax can be discussed as well.
