UEFA Referees Committee will meet in a few days and categories will be updated. Time for predictions, mostly about the new UEFA Elite referees.
This is a list of Category 1 referees with some chances of being promoted. Just make your choices and then we will discuss the results when the names will be revealed.
Cerro, Grinfeeld and Vincic
ReplyDeleteHow many can we pick? Because it may depend on possible demotions (Kassai...)
ReplyDeleteSo, if there are only 2 spots, I'd say Kulbakov and Kružliak. If there's a 3rd one, I'd doubt between Grinfeld and Vincic.
As there isn't a specific number for promotions / demotions, you can even vote all the names... no limits. It will be interesting to see which referees will have more preferences.
DeleteI didn't know there wasn't a limit. Thanks!
DeleteAnyway, I still consider Kulbakov and Kružliak as those who will promote in December.
I think Kovacs
DeleteIMO, only Kružliak, Vinčič and maybe del Cerro Grande (seems to be Rosetti's favourite) are ready for now. Ekberg is a matter of time. Kulbakou and Kehlet are not material for elite category, imo. Buquet deserves it year by year but I don't think he will be promoted.
ReplyDeleteWhy is Kehlet here, and also "and" with Kulbakou? At the moment, these are incomparable candidates, they should not be in the same row.
DeleteOf course, they are not comparabe. It's only my subjective feeling that they are not on real elite level. Both are not the type of managers on the pitch, especially Kulbakou. Belarussian is very passive and allows too much for my taste. On the other hand, Kehlet makes too many mistakes in his games, too inconsistent.
DeleteI bet on 2 elite promotions:
ReplyDelete1. Alexey Kulbakov 🇧🇾
2. Ivan Kružliak 🇸🇰
The list should be much smaller, if we consider only those who were at least in 4-5 matches of the CL.
ReplyDeleteIMO, it should only be Kruzliak and Vincic. 50-50 for Kulbakou.
ReplyDeleteIf Vinčić isn't promoted then UEFA ought to look very hard at themselves.
ReplyDeleteKružliak should join him easily, maybe he could encounter problems with Batta in Sinsheim but I watched him twice (PAR-BES, WAL-DEN) and he was clearly on an Elite level.
Kuĺbakoŭ is an interesting case, he think he has done enough to be promoted, but only in the summer is my feeling.
Del Cerro Grande is slightly lacking in soft skills, but one match managed to change his career, which of course he supported afterwards, eg Nice-Ajax. I wouldn't be surprised to read his name, also his origin should count for him.
It would be nice to read Buquet's name, I like him as a referee. I can remember a really excellent EL performance by him in Olympiacos - Osmanlispor, and he usually convinced me in UEFA and L1. But, I think committee won't see the point in promoting him.
Stieler, Grinfeld, Treimanis, Kovács, Ekberg, Kabakov, Aghayev- all a matter of time, but not for now.
Mažeika and Madden have some reasonable chances latterly. Kehlet is no Elite referee, at least for my taste.
Let's see what UEFA decide!

Miguelgorry with the Côte-d'Azur derby, probably less interesting this time than the previous years. Buquet with a clash (1st v 2nd). Bastien and Turpin (VAR) officiate on Saturday night, probably a European appointment for both of them next week. Top game for Millot in a hot stadium, finally he gets good appointments in Ligue 1 this year (after e.g. Monaco-Marseille and Lyon-Bordeaux).
PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN - MONTPELLIER HÉRAULT SC and TOULOUSE FC - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS are canceled
DeleteYep. Due to the "gilets jaunes" affaire, I guess.
DeleteThat's it!
DeleteAS MONACO - OGC NICE and AS SAINT-ETIENNE - OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE are also canceled
DeleteKruzliak, Vincic, Kulbakov, Mazeika imo.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so that Istvan Kovacs will be promoted in Elite in this winter. He didn'i have a comitee member in his games from CL or Nations League. But he and the other debutants in Champions League are sure the refs for the Euro Under 21 from next year, like Hategan was in Euro under 21 in 2013. I think you can't go to Elite without a Under 21 final tournament. And what is going happened with Bojorn Kuipers, Milorad Mazic, Gianluca Rocchi and Undiano Mallenco who all are 45 years?
ReplyDeleteI think Mazic and Kuipers will ref for another few years but Rocchi and Mallenco will retire because Italy and Spain have mandatory retirement age I think.
DeleteMazic said he'll be around 2 more years, after EURO2020 he'll retire.
DeleteRocchi will be confirmed on FIFA list in 2019 as last year.
DeleteHe should end domestic career on June 2019 according to rules, but very likely he will get a derogation for officiating in serie A in 2019-2020 season. In any case, he will be out from FIFA list on December 2019.
Undiano Mallenco will have to retire from La Liga on June 2019, he will be FIFA referee only for the first half of 2019.
Does anybody know when the uefa referee committee will have the meeting to decide the movements?
ReplyDeleteAccording to UEFA calendar, the meeting is planned today, maybe in the morning. Hopefully we will know something later in the afternoon / evening.
DeleteRumors from Spain:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.sport.es/es/noticias/laliga/del-cerro-grande-puede-ascender-grupo-elite-arbitros-uefa-7185358
I'd say it is more than a rumour: during the last break for UNL, Velasco Carballo hosted a press conference with Clos Gómez and four LaLiga referees, who were presented as Spanish Elite referees by Velasco Carballo himself. Guess who were those four referees? Of course, Alberto Undiano Mallenco, Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz, Carlos del Cerro Grande and Jesús Gil Manzano.
DeleteAt that point, it was almost official that del Cerro would be promoted today. Velasco Carballo, who has worked for a long time with Rosetti, who seems to have a good relation with him, who hosts a press conference selecting four (why four?) out of the 20(+1 VAR) LaLiga referees, and introducing them with the word Elite (why Elite? Why not "top referees", "best referees", "great referees"?).
One important remark: I'm not saying that del Cerro doesn't deserve this nor that he has been promoted because of that relation of his "boss". What I mean is that Rosetti had already told Velasco Carballo a while ago and it was known by then, and he chose to give a public "clue".
If such rumour is true, it makes no sense IMO.
DeleteWhy does Spain must have 4 Elite referees? And why not wait until next May when Mallenco will retire?
Well, If I'm not wrong, not long ago Italy also had 4 Elite referees (Rizzoli, Rocchi, Orsato & Tagliavento). I, anyway, expect Del Cerro Grande to be promoted in June, just to have indeed 3 Elite referees. But it has to be mentioned that Del Cerro Grande is considered also a VAR specialist, like Makkelie in Netherlands. And, indeed, I also noticed that Velasco Carballo in a recent Media Day presented Del Cerro along with Mateu Lahoz, Undiano Mallenco and Gil Manzano as the "Elite" referees that will have a press conference.
DeleteIt's a pity he's 42 already, because IMO is the best Spanish referee.
OT: David Elleray is appointed as an advisor for the Belgian Refereeing Department. He'll analyse the current situation, look at the technical competences of the refs and use of the VAR. He's expected to deliver a report by spring 2019.

DeleteTwo clips about Bordeaux - Saint etienne yesterday.
ReplyDeleteIt was a quite strange game with a lot of stoppage time and a big injury(8 minutes of additional time in First half and 6 in second half).
Penalty after OFR:

RC -> YC after OFR:
https://streamable.com/4i6b6
What do you think?
Penalty fully correct IMO.
DeleteAbout the second scene: For me no clear, obvious mistake. The way the player reacts after the red card indicates he is accepting the decision. Almost no complaints from the Bordeaux players as well. Red card would have been harsh but was not a clear and obvious mistake.
The justification for the OFR in the second scene might be, that the referee thought he had his hand in his opponent's face and the replays revealed, that was not the case.
DeleteWhen Chefren have the names i'm sure he will publish the list. As we see he hasn't found yet what committee has decided

Irrati with "Italian derby" the most sonorous serie A game. This appointment was not expected because all the referees called for CWC had to be in UAE today. So, it is clear that Rizzoli asked for a derogation for having Irrati tomorrow. He will travel to UAE after the game. Surely something extra-ordinary, but the calendar didn't help the committee. On next weeks there will be many top clashes in serie A (Juventus - Inter, Torino - Juventus, Juventus - Roma, Inter - Napoli and so on...) with Rocchi and Irrati out. So for this reason there was this specific request by Rizzoli to Busacca, I think.
deserved appointment for Irrati he used to be VAR in all big matches in italy but now as main referee. @CHEFREN since you are italian what’s your opinion about La penna and Chifgi and how old are they
DeleteLa Penna 1983 born, Chiffi 1984.

A 'mini-update' from Bulgaria!
ReplyDeleteVolen Chinkov, new FIFA referee 1983-born, took charge of a small(er) Sofia Derby at the weekend, between Slavia - CSKA.
His performance is very controversial in the media, thanks especially to a missed penalty which can be found below.
https://streamable.com/v38qk
Besides, I didn't really like his performance. He acted like a policeman on the pitch. He showed no real prevention and no clear line in cards / fouls.
His style might work in Bulgaria, but my feeling is that he will not gain a promotion in UEFA.
Now, much pressure on experienced ex-FIFA referee Nikolay Yordanov who was chosen to handle CSKA Sofia - Ludogorets, 2H has just begun.
Yordanov did a good job (I missed first ≈30mins though). He showed to be an experienced referee, he dealt with the players in a sophisticated way. He picked up all of the situations meriting a YC, including a correct 2nd caution for Ludogorets.
DeleteTwo particular points to remark:
1) Potential penalty for Ludogorets at 49'? I liked play-on decision here.
https://www.vbox7.com/play:ebd62163dd
2) Very poor calculation of additional time. Yordanov only added two minutes (four/five was about right); this really inflamed the match. To be fair, he enlarged the two well and ended the match at 94:20, but it was not really acceptable to have only two minutes here.
Overall, a good impression.
In the Dutch paper a article with Erwin Zeinstra. He is part of team Kuipers. He say that the UEFA did a request to Kuipers and Mazic to referee at Euro 2020
ReplyDeleteKuipers answer is positive but only if he not thake the place of Makkelie
https://www.omropfryslan.nl/nieuws/854723-europees-pensioen-uitgesteld-voor-erwin-zeinstra-ek-2020-optie
Is Kuipers appointed on the weekend in the Netherlands, i.e. fit for CL next week?
DeleteNo he is not appointed for this weekend. So he will not referee in the CL next week
DeleteMazic confirmed this. He said he'll retire after EURO2020. Who knows what'll happen in 2 years.
DeleteAn age limit of 45 years is set for a reason. Maybe at this age a referee is still mentally prepared and willing to officiate on a top level, but the physical body usually presents a constraint. And in case of injuries a rehabilitation period for "older" referee is much longer. I believe that the opportunities should be given to younger referees. Both Kuipers and Mazic have got really impressive palmarès but I believe the time has come for the "newcomers"..
DeleteKuipers is out off action till at least winterbreak... he’s injured, injury is unknown because privacy reasons
