  2. Marciniak's international comeback with a rather low profile match. I wonder, whether his EURO place is as secure as most of us think. But hopefully, he will get a QF appointment in CL/EL and convince that he is ready again.
Not so great game also for Orsato, but I don't think, that should mean anything, but that they wanted to use most of their Eltie referees.
Finally Karasev in a match, where one could have expected a First Group referee. Really hard to tell his current status, also given his CL R16 match.
Top games go to Soares Dias (should confirm his status as a safe EURO candidate) and Kuipers (no surprise).
Some younger Second Group referees in sensible games for them.
Normal appointments for the First Group referees, I think - only Jug with a slightly weaker match.

    1. Agreed - to add, I would highlight Karasëv's observer as very interesting (and Young with Kovács yesterday).

  3. Referees from 40 (out of 55) different countries in the 75 WC qualifiers.
Missing countries: AND, ARM, BIH, CYP, CZE, FRO, GEO, GIB, KAZ, KOS, LIE, MDA, NIR, SMR, SVK
(Didn't double-check, so there might be a mistake somewhere)

    1. 23 Elite referees appointed, only missing:
Gil Manzano (possibly replaced by del Cerro Grande)
      Zwayer (possibly replaced by Aytekin)
Kruzliak (domestically suspended, got a friendly)
      Skomina (probably still injured)

So apparently all or nearly all Elite referees were used on MD1-3.
To compare: In the last EURO qualifiers, only 18 different Elite referees were used on MD1-4.

    2. Peljto (BIH) ans Kruashvili (GEO) are busy these days.

Maybe Glova (SVK) and Muntean (MDA) could be appointed, but anywas almost every "serious" football nation is included.

  4. Marciniak with a very poor match, this probably determines his current status in UEFA

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I wouldn't call this match poor. Georgia is a tough opponent and Greece (despite the draw in Spain) is a relatively new team.

      Delete
    2. After a so long stop, it is common to appoint in a less challenging game than an expected one. Even if you belong to Elite Category. You must recover, before getting something more, and I think after that maybe a EL quarterfinal, if possible, for him.

Anyone knows why Honig is AR1 and not van Roekel?

    1. also on 4th april Kuipers/Honing/Zeinstra in the Dutch League, so it seems like Van Roekel is unavailable at the moment, reason unknown for me

      Delete
    2. Del Cerro is also missing (again) his regular AR2.

      Delete
    3. @Eric, Kuipers is replaced the 4th of April.

      Delete
  7. Hopefully everything is OK with van Roekel, very rare to see Kuipers with another assistant referee.
Marciniak back in a low profile game with an Italian observer, Domenico Messina, this is not a coincidence, if you ask me, he will report to Rosetti how he has found the Polish after a so long international stop.
Karasev in Germany - North Macedonia with Trentalange is another interesting choice: quite sure that the Russian will attend EURO, but the game is not something for an Elite referee. His status at moment is very particular.
Great appointment for Artur Dias in Austria, he should be sure about EURO call as well.

  9. OT: In a recent social media post, Deniz Aytekin mentioned, that he was mentored by former Turkish FIFA referee Bülent Yildirim around the year 2015 and that he helped him massively in his personality development, coming from least popular (in 2011) to most popular (in 2020) Bundesliga referee among players.
Quite interesting BTS anecdote, I think.

  11. Sidiropoulos from Greece didn't get a CL fight and won't get it till the end. How can he go Euro?

    ReplyDelete
  12. For everyone understanding German really worth to watch it. Aytekin talks deeply about the process of deciding and how he got acceptance by the players after most players in Bundesliga hated him in his first years. In the voting of the players which is organized every year he was once on the last place. Now he is constantly on top. He tells about the gamechangers... Preparation of decisions, showing respect by explaining and giving room for positive warm emotion whenever possible, like showing compassion or sharing jokes... But never going away from the clear line. I really like that guy, as a ref and as a human being with deep understanding of human nature.

    ReplyDelete
  13. By the way... Do you really think UEFA will take only 18 refs to the Euro?
With the danger of Corona replacements I think, 20 or 22 refs on the list would be logic. What do you think?

    1. With VARs and Fourth Officials, the number of reserve referees should be easily covered.

      Delete
    2. Vars will be in Nyon, so you can not use them as a reserve referees.

      Delete
    3. I didn't know that. All VARs from Nyon at EURO? Thanks for this update, however in case of problems I think they should have reserve options at stadiums.

      Delete
    4. Are you sure about such information ? Is it official ? All VARs will act in remote from Nyon ? This is an important info to forecast the number of Vars. if they stay in Nyon and they don't travel along the Europe maybe only 9 referees and 9 assistant referees are enough

    1. IMO quite clear YC. The ellbow is not used as a weapon.

      Delete
    2. Tricky situation. I agree that it looks more like a tool than a weapon, however the left arm moves different to the right arm and he clearly knows his opponent is there, so there are some doubts. Furthermore the left leg moves unnaturally - looks like an attempt to kick the opponent (probably not with malicious intent, but maybe as kind of a reflex).
Altogether I am tending more towards Red, but I think, both colours would be acceptable.

  22. Eventful game for Treimanis I have my doubts over some decisions but would like to watch more replays

    ReplyDelete
  23. I was one of the advocates for VAR introduction in the begining but nowadays I listen to the complains of the players and coaches and more and more simpatise to the idea that it really kills the raw emotions in football. And these emotions are what makes the game so beautiful.
In that sense I strongly recommend anybody to watch the game Armenia - Romania. It was a game that reminded me why we all love football so much - with all the referee's undeliberate mistakes and all. It was a pure joy to watch. I really don't see a sense now, when the VAR is still so far from perfect, why some referees in a room should make wrong decision or decide when to interfere in a very inconsistent way, when all these things can do the referee on the field...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Both are fun. Without VAR more mistakes happen. But sometimes with VAR mistakes happen despite it being clear. Emotions and angry players either way. So both are fun.

  24. WOW a straight red card and a penalty later on to put a late drama in Armenia - Romania. I'm fascinated by your comment, Anonymous, but any info about the decisions taken by Treimanis?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO, the RC is supportable, but a (2nd) YC might also have been enough. It was a dangerous high leg tackle, which ended on the opponent's thigh with medium intensity.
The penalty was for tripping before any of the two players had the ball - not so easy, how much the defender can be blamed. IMO not wrong in any case, but one can argue, whether one really wants penalties for such situations.
The 2-2 goals probably was slightly offside, but a very hard decision for the AR.

      Delete
    2. All decisions were correct but one, second goal of Armenia, there was a offside which it wasn't spotted by AR1.

  25. Here are the big calls made by the Latvian officials team in the (epic!) Armenia - Romania game. I'll post an analysis / full clips HL a bit later in the evening.

62' - Onside call by AR2 Aleksejs Spasjoņņikovs for 1-(1) goal

    66' - SPA vs. DOGSO?

77' - Red Card to Romania no.9 (SFP)

86' - Onside call by AR1 Haralds Gudermanis for (2)-2 goal

88' - Penalty given to Armenia (impeding / charging)

    1. 62' Good onside

66' Quite clear SPA in my book, foul close to the sideline, no real control of the ball. Good decision.

77' Interesting situation. RC from the point of impact, YC with the intensity of the challenge. I think more of a reckless foul, but I understand SFP argument so I support Treimanis.

86' Look slightly offside, VAR would be the tool to be 100% sure

88' Tricky one too, the last replay would be the best to make his mind but a defender is blocking the view. From the previous one, rather play on, but it's difficult to be sure on this one.

What a challenging game ! Latvian officials surely faced a busy afternoon, lots of situation to analyze. If FIFA assesser back Treimanis in these calls he could expect to get quite a high mark.

      Delete
    2. Agree with all Treimanis job, but offside goal and error by Gudermanis. Concerning Pk, disagree with Upstylon, more PK and foul with leg by romanian defender. So IMO, clear foul.

      Delete
    3. 86' I think is offside anyways. The #22 (who is clearly in an offside position) attempts to play a ball which is close to him, and that impacts on the goalkeeper who has to hesitate before committing his positioning to the other striker.

      Delete
    4. Thank you for the clips, Mikael, well done!
Great ONSIDE by AR2 for 1-1 goal, let's underline that, he comes from a very difficult period so this for sure is a good signal. The situation in 66' is a clear SPA, I agree with Upstylon, I would even say in case of RC for DOGSO, this would be mistake, but of course not 100%.
RC for SFP absolutely OK for me and better decision, but maybe YC would have been accepted as well. Opponent lowered his head, but at the same time one must say that this leg was very, very high and he would have hit the chest, with a very dangerous challenge. Absolutely OK. Please note the body language by Treimanis, before issuing this RC, very particular, slightly smiling, I think he had still in mind his terrible mistake in previous game and he didn't want to repeat it again. He went for the safest option there...
The extremely tight offside in 2-2 goal can't be a blame for AR1, in my opinion quite impossible without VAR, must be accepted, rather, the player in clear offside didn't interfere with opponents, despite of trying to play ball by head.
Soft penalty in my view, I wouldn't have whistled it, this is a classic situation I don't like, however no clear mistake and observer can support him.
I didn't watch full game but it seems as the words reported by some readers here were absolutely true!
Amazing and fantastic scenes with so many people on the standings celebrating a goal scored.
I had forgotten such moments, my last mental frames of crazy fans are from Liverpool - Atlético Madrid CL before the global lockdown one year ago...

    5. IMO
      62' - Great onside.
66' - Actually borderline for me, but given the position in the wing, I prefer a YC.
77' - Both decisions would be acceptable, however, I like the decision, because the player seriously endangers the opponent's safety.
86' - Very difficult to assess, but it is closely offside.
      88' - I think it is a penalty.

  42. Incorrect dropped ball procedure by Karasev at the last moments of GER-MKD. A head injury for a player for each team after they collided in the penalty area, where the ball touched at least one of them. The ball bounced outside the penalty area without touching anyone, and then Karasex stopped play before anyone else touched it. Since the ball was last touched in the penalty area, the dropped ball should have been for the North Macedonian goalkeeper. Instead, Karasev dropped it outside the penalty area for Germany, and on top of that error, he didn't even drop it straight down, but deliberately dropped directionally away from away.

  43. Karasev night turned into nightmare, an extremely soft PK for Germany, a clearly missed handball PK for Northern Macedonia and some completely absurd YCs in the last minutes for German players. Bad body language, no match control. He should be happy that Germany lost in the end despite his clear mistakes, which could have been 2 gamechangers.. I am shocked. After this night I hope that we will not see him so quickly again, especially in the Euro.

  44. Full clip HL of the Armenia - Romania game handled by Andris Treimanis:

    https://fromsmash.com/armroutreimanis

    Key Match Incidents:

62' - well seen by Spasjoņņikovs, in the grand scheme of everything this was a huge call for him personally, chuffed for him that he got it right

66' - I guess I'm in a minority that sees this is a real borderline decision, but SPA is (just) the better call IMO

77' - I broadly agree with Philipp, but there is also a studs contact on the chest, which you can see from the latter replay angle; HUNCRO incident from RAP suggests that (S)YC would be enough

In my view we should try to eliminate such 'karaté-esque' moves from football - fair play to the teammate who (seems to) shout in the micro and change Treimanis' mind from a SYC, good call IMO

86' - the first thing I would say is that this camera angle is really weird, just look at 52' in the videos...

My instict watching the live sequence was that the goal-scorer was off by half-a-body-length, and that does seem to be the case

Gudermanis seems to be a bit put off by the attacker near him, who for a second distorts where the line of defenders ends, and in doubt, the flag stays down

So probably a big mistake, but hard to be 100% sure from that footage

88' - according to strictly enforcing the LotG as a text, this is a really good call IMO! Defender moves into the path of where the attacker is going to reach the ball (and shoot), with no intention of playing it himself - penalty

I was surprised that the Romania players didn't protest this call more vociferously; it would have been better if Treimanis looked more certain in this very late and decisive penalty (whistle tone, body tension)

Again, agree with Philipp, to paraphrase - "does football really want such penalty calls (to decide the game at 88')?". Penalty given by Hugh Dallas in ITATUR game at EURO 2000 is another apt example

I guess big picture refereeing points towards play on? I can understand that view, but personally I would much rather praise Treimanis for this call, it took real bottle!

    1. Managing the game:

Firstly - what an absolutely fantastic match! A real pleasure. You can have your own view about VAR, but I totally agree with Anonymous that "it reminded me why we love football so much!".

Treimanis didn't fall into the trap of trying to be a game-manager in this match. He just took his decisions and defended them with natural authority - exactly what this particular game needed.

I would have rather he opened the cards at 19' (SPA/LoR holding) than 21' (more careless striking), but besides that his tactical approach was spot on. Latvian ref was always accepted by the players.

Perception mistakes were kept to a real minimum here, the biggest one being the missed strike at 5'.

I don't think we should overrate how hard this game was for Treimanis - but if you support him re. KMIs, then it was definitely a (very) good one. Strong 7 on my evaluation scale.

      Delete
    2. Watching the key moments again now, I am absolutely convinced that having VAR here we wouldn't be so lucky to watch this incredible game of football. The match would have been stopped for 2 or 3 minutes after one of the first incidents and it would have killed all the atmosphere and adrenaline, I am not against VAR but IMO it is far from ready to be introduced. A perfect example for using new technologies in football is the GLT - the decision is 100 per cent correct and is taken for a second without killing the dynamic of the game. This should be the aim for VAR also and it should be implemented only when it is technically ready. For now the decisions taken by VAR don't justify the big prise that is paid - i.e. killing the emotions, the fluency and the speed of the game.

AR2 with 2 correct offside calls (Greece had an disallowed goal / Georgia probably as well in the first half).

  48. Yesterday, Karasev's performance wasn't convincing at all for me.

    Regarding KMIs:
He whistled a penalty (tripping). It was a soft, but supportable call for me.
Later on, he missed a very, very evident handling penalty. Karasev was lucky that this decision wasn't game decisive.

    About his general performance:
Karasev showed a very strict and harsh foul detection/disciplinary control.
    He showed 8 YCs.
Those sanctions are supportable, when I look at them isolated.
However, Karasev confused the players with his foul detection. As a result, he produced a rather difficult match unnecassarily, although the match itself wasn't even that difficult from a refereeing perspective.
I think, I haven't seen neither a single verbal warning, nor any connection with the players.
I think, it is something like a 7,7/7,8 on the UEFA scale.

  49. Karasev crucial incidents.

    Whistled penalty:
    https://streamja.com/qV423
In my opinion very soft call, it is more simulation than penalty, attacker uses the tackle by opponent to create contact, he could have avoided that. A call that you can't clearly deny, but I would have played on. Observer maybe will support.

    Possible penalty for handball:
    https://streamable.com/k39uwq
A penalty that in my opinion should have been whistled. Defender jumps and makes his body unnatural. He increased body volume. It is true that arm is not 100% open and one could even say maybe supportable decision, but I think that Karasev missed the whole incident, he would have whistled it. If you allow this and you play on, as I already said for the penaly by Hernández Hernández, then detecting a punishable handball becomes even more complicated. All expected penalty here, natural decision, long and expected ball.
To summarize, in both situations one could find very small points to back referee, but in my opinion both were wrong calls.

    1. 1. Penalty
Very soft but I think still supportable, although I would have preferred no penalty.

      2. Possible Penalty
Very clear handball in my opinion.

Also as mentioned by smala017, wrong dropped ball in the end. Should have been a dropped ball for the goalkeeper as the last touch of the ball was in the penalty area.

In general I didn't like Karasev's performance. His foul detection was quite weak and something I noticed was his lack of communication. No warnings, no connection to the players, which resulted in way too many yellow cards in a match that didn't need them at all.

      Delete
    2. If a defender makes a bad and misplaced sliding tackling which causes a disadventage to the striker and which is not towards the ball, why should the striker try to avoid a contact. That's completly against the sense of football.
As well you can clearly see, that Sane even tries to avoid both contacts on the left and the right food, but is not able to stay on his feed after contact on his right food.
For me everything but a penalty is a clear and obvious mistake.

The missed handball penalty is also a clear mistake and a not supportable decision as the arm is away from his natural body shape and the muscles are tensed.

      Delete
    3. I also think, that the penalty for Germany was completely fine, because in my impression Sane makes a normal attacking movement (quick turn) and is not looking for the contact or going down easily.

At the handball situation, the arm position isn't even that unnatural IMO. The more important argument here is, that the arm even moves towards the ball, so I agree, that it's a clear penalty.
But just by the position of the arm, it would be grey area for me, especially due to the short distance from the last contact.

      Delete
    4. Agree with JR! Though I wonder how 62' will be seen in this current climate where 'soft penalties' are to be avoided.

76' is a very interesting and perhaps somewhat telling incident - Karasëv didn't have the confidence in his own perception to trust what he saw, and give a penalty.

Thanks to Flip for his wider report. It chimes with my general impression of Karasëv in recent times - not calming his games with his officiating, but actually inflaming everyone.

If the Russian does attend the EURO as a referee, then sorry, but we can reflect that personal friendships are more important than performances for UEFA's refereeing chief.

I wish Karasëv all the best, have nothing against him personally, and would be the first person chuffed if his performances improved (I certainly have the impression that he is a nice man!); but some things have to be said.

    1. POLENG 18': With slow motion analysis it's probably no penalty, because Sterling goes down deliberately and the touch by the defender should not make a big difference. But I am not sure, whether it should count as clear mistake (in a 7.9 and/or VAR context). Also quite understandable, that he gave it, in the live picture it looks like a clear foul.
52': Clear penalty, but one that even VAR could miss on a bad day - there were also no protests, it seems. Kuipers seemed to have a good angle though.

UKRKAZ 57': Neither the holding nor the tripping has enough intensity for a penalty
89': Could be given, but the attacker also seems to exaggerate the contact, therefore OK to play on

BIHFRA 72': From the pictures, I don't really see a foul, however the fall suggests, that there was someting. Also not clear, whether the decisive contact (if existing) was inside.

  60. Today I watched Italian League matches (not all)
    1) Milan-Sampdoria: Mr. Marco Piccinini (2nd year in CAN A; 37 yo) was in charge. Really solid performance by him with a correct rejected penalty appeal for Milan and a Red Card for Sampdoria's midfielder Silva. Also his (Both) ARs were so much busy with some difficult calls. For me in UEFA scale: 8,50.

    2) Atalanta-Udinese: Gianluca Manganiello was in charge. He is a ref who suffered some bad performances in last season and had problems with acceptation by players and team: after a good half season, today's performance was overall good but there was a possible PK for Udinese (maybe outside the Penalty box) for me quite clear. Anyway this could be acceptable decision but he could improve in some aspects.. 8,20.

3)Benevento - Parma, international 1st class Davide Massa in charge for a important match for relegation. The match went good but there is an episode which is important for the result. A Parma player strikes, the goalkeeper can't intervene because behind him there is an opponent player in Offside (thight) . AR2 initially awards the goal and Massa is calling to an OFR by VAR Di Bello (2nd Class FIFA and Video Match Official) and change his decision. Anyway is an 8,40.

    4) Cagliari - Verona: FIFA 2nd Class Daniele Doveri (1 of top 3 italian refs at the moment). The match was really important for Cagliari who is involved in Relegation battle. Doveri, as a top one, did very well with no controversial situations. Strong personality. 8,40.

    5) Genoa-Fiorentina. Mr Maresca (FIFA 2nd class) was in charge. Maresca last season achieved a great number of big clash but this season didn't start like the last. He had some difficult moments and never reached a big match. This performance was very good so he could achieve something at the end of the season.
Ribery (FIO) sees red card when he
intervenes with the hammer foot on the ankle of an opponent. Spot on.
In the last seconds possible PK for Genoa: the defender touches the ball and then takes the man. it is right for me not to proceed to the OFR but the doubt remains.
    For me, 8.50. -- part 1--

    1. 6) Lazio-Spezia. Mr Giua (33 yo) in charge. The story of this ref is troubled. He was promoted because young and pushed by Nicchi. His performances weren't so good to be a ligue 1 ref. Today was overall good but:
      - penalty kick awarded after OFR: VAR Guida called Giua for an handball that could be a PK but also not, so not a clear mistake
      - 3 mass confrontation in the final minutes: IN the 1st he is to lenient while a foul is made by a Spezia's player: instead of start running to show YC, he waites and the mass confrontation starts. The player who suffered the foul makes a reaction hitting with his head the opponent.
AR1 Cecconi joins the frain instead of watch. Giua's decision are YC and RC.
-Another RC issued for Correa (2nd yc) totally correct.
Evaluation: the personality was better in confront of other games. Something to rewatch in the final and about the PK, anyway 8,20 for me is adecuated (play on instead of PK was good, for me)

      7) Napoli-Crotone, Mr. Di Martino (ex CAN B ref, 33 yo). on the eve it seemed the classic head and tail between Napoli (5th) and Crotone (20th), but the match ended 4-3. However, the referee was able to direct this match without difficulty. 8.30.

      8) Sassuolo-Roma, Luca Pairetto (former serie A and FIFA ref Pierluigi's son). Correct PK in the middle of 1st half and very good performance BUT...
3 mins of additional awarded. 91:00 there is a yc for a bench component. 92:45 foul and yc. Luca Pairetto fixes the barrier but does not beat the punishment whistling the end and generating a general nervousness frankly avoidable. It would have been enough to blow the whistle once the ball was out of the penalty area. He could have avoided this situation: for this reason, 8.20.

      9) Torino-Juventus. Michael Fabbri (FIFA 2nd). Turin derby isn't an easy game also without crowd. Michael Fabbri had diffulties:
Possible Pk not awarded to Turin (for me correct decision) but poor acceptance by players and benches (which lasted throughout the match)
Possible RC for Cuadrado who commits a fould and then reacts raising his foot and trying to hit opponent player. YC is issued. For me a red card would have been a more appropriated decision.
Goal disawarded by AR1 Meli (ex-Rocchi's AR1 in UEFA competitions in 2019 -with an EL final- and actually DAvide Massa's AR1 in UEFA) which tought there was a touch after a shot that keeped Ronaldo in Off-side. VAR rewatched the situation and awarded the goal.
Not the best Fabbri today with an important mistake. 7,80 (like for Meli).

    1. It's not OFR stuff IMHO. As I saw on the replays, the ball is going outside because the attacker fails his touch as a consequence of being fouled-he would have headed towards the net if he wasn't tripped- I wouldn't have called referee to change his decision. Maybe RFEF-CTA instructions about DOGSO.

Anyway, I think it was a good performance by Estrada Fernandez and his crew, in a rather fair game, keeping in mind how a Basque derby can be hot and passionate.
Glad to see him handle one Copa del Rey final, I think he has been a very reliable referee both in domestic competition and in UEFA games, as he deserves it for years but was automatically ruled out with Barcelona's presence in the Final year after year.
