  1. Yess good question.

I've been watching a lot YT video's lately, just analyzing body languages. Its fascinating.

    Question to the Germans:
Are there any similarities between Siebert and Brych, or do they have really different styles?

    ReplyDelete
  2. I would say there are more similarities than difference between the two. Firstly, I think, Brych alone has/had two different styles domestically and internationally. In Bundesliga, he is more lenient and relies even more on communication, while he is stricter and maybe also more focussed on accuracy in international games. E.g., his number of sending-offs per match is twice as high in CL (~0.34) than in BL (~0.17).
For Siebert, I haven't observed such a difference yet.
Comparing the two, I would say, that Siebert has the even higher football understanding in terms of empathizing with players. On the other hand, Brych has the bigger natural authority, which normally increases with experience and reputation.
Both referees have their strength in finding a suitable approach for maintaing match control both in their line / level of strictness and in the communication with players, where they can be quite friendly and jovial, but also strict and distanced based on the situation.

  4. Thanks Philipp, nice to read! So indeed some interesting similarities in style and charisma.

The difference between a domestic and international style is also an interesting discussion. I think nowadays some Elite-referees are domestically the so-called 'By the book' referees, but internationally a bit more flexible; using the yellow cards as a tool to keep control over the game.

    The difference

Vitaly Meshkov became the head of the training department of referees of the RFU Academy. Ex-assistant and AVAR Nikolay Bogach has been appointed as Meshkov's deputy; the department will also include ex-assistant Vyacheslav Semenov and current referee Evgeny Turbin as chief specialists.

    1. IMO wrong decision by the referee, it seems that the blue player started the conversation and then I see a mass confrontation where the blue player falls down very easily. I'd prefer two yellow cards to the players involved

      Delete
    2. I guess apart from the red card to red, the blue player at least got a caution as well? For theater?
Red card for the stupid action probably supportable although I think force used is rather negligible

      Delete
    3. Surprised by the reactions above. Imo good decision by Lindhout. Clear movement with the head towards the Rangers. no matter what the Rangers player did this remains unacceptable. YC for Rangers player agreed. What do you think Chefren?

      Off topic That pitch...

      Delete
    4. In UEFA's site is mentioned only the red card about this incident, but I didn't see the match so. Personally RC is too harsh I see only a mass confrontation. The pitch is worse than San Siro before the break...

      Delete
    5. In my opinion, Hans, the red card can't be questioned given that the player moved his head to hit opponent, but very often these incidents are assessed as mutual misconduct by most of people because the other player is guilty of the head - head confrontation as well, and the force of the header is not so significant. I don't know what had exactly happened before because there was a replay during the live scene so I can't say how much Lindhout could have worked to prevent that.
The red card by itself is not a mistake, let's say, but nowadays a different management of such incident "is expected".
However never a mistake by referee, that's important to underline. Player must blame himself for his action.

The number of reported officials (23 women) matches with the original list we got:

if we exclude the guest from Venezuela, Emikar Calderas.
Let's see whether UEFA will publish more.

    1. what do you think, chefren, how many referees will be selected for the women's euro? 31 matches, i think you would not need more than 12-13 referees and some reserves? so this would be "half" the elite-pool...but i only see 8 quarter-finals? so i am wondering if we will see some refs either getting their "last chance" there or even an "unexptected chance"...

      Delete
    2. We can look back at EURO 2017 to see that 11 referee were called for that tournament, and 2 reserve. So I think it should be the same this time, maybe 12 or 13 as you said, but not more tan that. And yes, "only" 8 games as CL Women's Quarterfinals are not a enough to test all the officials before the big tournament. We can assume that Frappart and Monzul, having also the chance to officiate in Men's competitions and being, without a real need to be tested for such tournament, can be excluded, so the 8 names who will get Women's CL quarterfinals will be very likely all the ones (if possible looking at nationality of teams involved) that will attend EURO.
Starting from quarterfinals in that competition VAR will be used as well, and it will be interesting to see the referees selected by committee. I ensure a detailed coverage on the blog about that.

      Trying 11 names as prediction:

      Ivana Martincic (Croatia)
      Jana Adámková (Czech Republic)
      Stéphanie Frappart (France)
      Riem Hussein (Germany)
      Rebecca Welch (England)
      Lina Lehtovaara (Finland)
      Marta Huerta (Spain)
      Anastasia Pustovoitova (Russia)
      Esther Staubli (Switzerland)
      Sara Persson (Sweden)
      Kateryna Monzul (Ukraine)

      Reserve:
      Tess Olofsson (Sweden)
      Cheryl Foster (Wales)

    4. If Kulcsar did not ref in UWCL, is she active in Hungary or took a break?

      Delete
    5. thank you chefren for detailed analysis. i read damkovas message a little different, as she said:

"Performances will take priority over names when we choose the referees," Damková said. "We could have a situation where referees that are not so well known impress us just as much as established officials."

      Ivana Martincic (Croatia)
--> appeared in men's competition, ger-lie not convincing in any aspect, however i think she will be in (southeast-candidate)

      Jana Adámková (Czech Republic)
--> personal friend of damkova, so a safe pair of hands

      Stéphanie Frappart (France)
--> safest bet ever^^ absolute equal performances in men-competitions to her male colleagues (bravo!)

      Riem Hussein (Germany)
--> very convincing performances througouht, also uwcl final was good

      Rebecca Welch (England)
--> host nation candidate, also safe bet

      Lina Lehtovaara (Finland)
--> never seen her, never heard of any big matches in the past?

      Marta Huerta (Spain)
--> big country name and good performances

      Anastasia Pustovoitova (Russia)
--> nobody knows what qualifies her but she seems to make the cut all the time, havent seen any convincing performance

      Esther Staubli (Switzerland)
--> most experienced name, well established, however partly nightmare performances like in olympic games and "only" two matches in uwcl for such established ref might be an indicator for not convincing performances?

      Sara Persson (Sweden)
--> safe pair of hands and only "nordic" candidate

      Kateryna Monzul (Ukraine)
--> well...what to say...has anyone seen a convincing performance in 2021? male-competition i think we can agree that we better not go into detail, as it would be a waste of time, and we see "only" category 2 as there isnt a category 3 anymore for here or even category 4...female performances i watched only match in wolfsburg on md6...also for somebody who does male 1st division regularly, those are not fields for improvement but just plain deficits: personality, handling and communication with players, match-management...BUT like anastasia, safe east-block candidate due to having ever been there

  9. Interesting desicion in Burnley - Man United. Ref: Mike Dean. Var: Stuart Atwell
MU's goal dissallowed after OFR, because of Maguire's offside, he didn't touched the ball, but blocked the Burnley's def.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Very similiar with the offside given against J. Ramsey in the FA Cup tie M. United vs. Villa. It is in both cases rather unlikely, that the blocked player can still reach the ball. But he was prevented from challenging and that is the main factor. +In the Villa game the block was so strong, that IMO a foul would have been called, even if the blocking player was not in an offside position.

      Delete
  10. The decision should have been irrelevant as the initial offence was either the other way or nothing at all! Certainly wasn't a freekick to the away team (another case of a referee balancing out decisions early on)

  11. It is confirmed, that Felix Zwayer will continue as referee. He is available again from now (resp. the upcoming weekend) on.
    Statement by Zwayer:
"After very stressful events and moments for my family and me, I had decided to take time out to reflect on and classify my personal and sporting situation together with my family, friends and important advisors. I used this time to work through important issues and sort myself and the situation. I am very grateful for all the conversations and feedback and the resulting opportunities and insights. I feel good again, reoriented, strengthened and secure. After theoretical preparation in courses and workshops and a performance test, I am ready to return to the football pitch. Full of anticipation and with a lot of tailwind from the entire football community, I look forward to continuing my great passion, refereeing."
Statement by Lutz Fröhlich, managing director of DFB referees:
"Felix has received a lot of encouragement from his colleagues in recent weeks, but also from football in general. His participation in the UEFA course was a first good signal from him. In further talks with him, we could already feel more clarity and motivation than at the beginning of the year. He then also took part in our online meeting last week and declared that he wants to return to the pitch and pursue his passion. We wish him a successful return to the pitch and also enjoy his refereeing duties again. Nevertheless, we continue to look with concern at the development in the social media, which can only be countered with overarching cohesion and clear sanctions for those who spread hate messages or half-truths or untruths."

    1. It is also reported, that he will referee in 2. Bundesliga on Sunday and in 1. Bundesliga on the following weekend.
I assume, he will be also ready for UEFA appointments after that.

    2. I really would like to know more as well, because, if I remember correectly, some days ago Zwayer said that it wasn't true he accepted money. So, either Zwayer is wrong or official DFB version is wrong. And that's not good.
I'm now very curious to see which games he will get in case of UEFA assignment.

    4. Well, in the critical point about taking the money, we just have testimony against testimony. Hoyzer says, Zwayer has taken the money. Zwayer denies it. And there are no witnesses.
For the DFB judge back then, Rainer Koch (now DFB vice and acting president), it was enough to state "it is to be assumed", Zwayer took the money and to ban him for some time.
The ordinary (public) court however ended its process due to lack of proof without a judgement.

So there is not really a chance for clarification unless one of the two changes his testimony. The current DFB refereeing leaders seem to trust Zwayer enough to let him continue.

  12. Very well done by Jarred Gillett in Villa - Leeds game. I do not like 90% referees in PL but I think he is quality. I enjoy watching him, including his communication, gesture, decision and reaction. I really hope to see him get more "big" games in the future

  14. Europa League matches are IMO pretty hard to predict.
There are some great matches on the program which require IMO at least "Medium level Elites". For example BAR-NAP and POR-LAZ.

And since Dortmund has been a bit 'unlucky' with referee decisions this season, in both domestic league and CL (leading to some mad reactions in several media), do you guys think it is likely to expect a bigger (Top 10) name for the match BVB-DOR?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I also expect Elite referees in those pairings. But it could also be a good opportunity for some of the newly promoted ones.
I rather don't expect a special treatment for the Dortmund game.
With now 32 Elite referees, it is even possible that nearly all EL R16 matches are covered by them. Especially as some referees from CL 2nd leg could also be used there.
So First group referees might be restricted to ECL.

58' Another disallowed goal for AEK after VAR intervention

    1. 15' - I would have said ONSIDE, excellent call by AR2.
58' - In this case AR1 remained with the first assessment on the original pass, the header by teammate was missed or maybe he thought about a touch only by defender, in these cases referee should intervene to help assistant referee, reporting the further touch and so making a new assessment, but well, with VAR it is a more than big effort... maybe not needed anymore? :)

83' - I think even in case of offside position, player wouldn't have been punishable, because he shows that he is not interested in playing ball, keeper sees the shot when it starts, he even tries to save it, no influence.

  21. I am not so satisfied with Jeremie Pignard's performance in Hajduk Split-Atletico. Interesting match in great atmosphere in front of 9000 home team fans (big number of fans for youth league match). I think he underestimated youth league match, it looked like he was not prepared for hot and crowded match.

Crucial situation was in 45+1' when he disallowed Hajduk's goal.

    2. Foul decision is doubtful, but maybe offside by #16 at the final pass? Hard to be sure, but it looks like he is slightly ahead of the ball, when the assisting header is made.

      Delete
    3. Thanks for the clip. UEFA reports that goal has been disallowed for the foul on keeper. It is always the same speech when keepers are involved, a soft touch or even nothing (just players close without contact) seems to be enough for a whistle. This is in my opinion an overprotection for them, as we discussed very often on the blog. A brave decision would have been to allow play continue, however, in this very difficult situation to read for AR, Philipp is right: possible offside at the moment of header but one can't be sure. Teammate can be ahead the line of the ball.
