  1. Half of the games has important names as observers. Probably those referees partially lost their trust and now they have the chance to won it back. I talk especially about Ekberg and Treimanis here.

  2. Expected appointments to me except for Ekberg; I really can't understand his drop after the selection at Euro 2020. It seems to me too much punished for the management of the match at euro 2020, he lost his promotion in 1st and now relegated in UECL. Did he performed so bad at Euro 2020 ?
Fair to appoint 1st category avoiding to have the same names belonging to elite with multiple appointments like probably will happen for Makkelie, Cakir and Turpin who will double the their selection in Europe league with a second match in CL on return leg

    1. Did he perform so bad at Euro 2020?
According to RAP Special EURO 2020 Edition, the answer seems to be positive. His performance in Austria - North Macedonia is reported, by analyzing the several clips about it, as extremely weak, without control of the game and very poor management.
However, his path is surely weird: after many and many years of development under the eyes of UEFA committee, they called him to EURO and they discovered, based on this game, that he was not good enough for Elite. In case of still good performance at EURO, maybe only in one game, very likely he would have been promoted to Elite. The management of the Swedish has definitely been totally different from almost all other referees.
And now the disappointment with this UECL assignment.

    2. Interesting: the German magazine Kicker attests Ekberg a very good performance in this game, giving him a 1.5. 1 would be the best grade, 6 the worst.

    3. This explains how much difficult is to make assessments about a referee's performance. Of course the first thing to analyze is who makes this assessment, expert and qualified people come before, but still, in my opinion, they can fullyu disagree with different views, even more in games without crucial situations, where you have to judge a referee for the "overall appearance" and the management. Of course committee's opinion comes before everything, however reading again the page of the blog where his performance was discussed, here:
      http://law5-theref.blogspot.com/2021/06/uefa-euro-2020-match-6-austria-north.html
We can see many comments talking about a positive performance, I think, many of people who write here are referees, most of them are also very expert, so the feeling is that committee went really in a very deep analysis about this game, to be so disappointed with Ekberg.

    4. kicker's explanation: "Always kept control in an intense game with many duels and calmed down the sometimes heated tempers."
So they focussed on the control aspect and came to a completely different result.
Of course, they are football journalists, i.e. experts for the sport, but no specially for refereeing. So the opinion of UEFA's refereeing staff and even of some commenters here obviously is more profound and valuable.

    5. Another factor perhaps, regarding Ekberg: I gather that many Swedish experts and fans see Nyberg as both more talented and also already more ready for top games. So after EURO, perhaps UEFA decided to 'switch horses' and put support behind Nyberg instead of promoting Ekberg on the basis of longer
      service!?

    6. If someone does not confirm after several trials, they move on to the next one coming up on the list, e.g. Stieler-Siebert, Ekberg-Nyberg, even Hategan-Kovacs after Euro.

  3. Not many surprises on the set of appointments.

However, Pawson's appointment on Midtjylland - PAOK could and should have been avoided.

The greek team had many complaints on the Ajax - PAOK match a few seasons ago. Not very ofter we see a referee awarding 3 penalties to the home team.

    1. You should already know by now that the only nation whose complaints are taken seriously are Italys. And thats a shame when you see the quality of refs Italy delivers these years. If they would have been treated fairly only Orsato would be Elite by now... just like the Netherlands should only have Makkelie as an elite by now...But thats how Rosetti works.... some countries are not taken into account at all....

    2. Better consider the behaviour off the Greek players and staff in that game, it was shamefull, Paok should have been fined for the behavior off their staff and players against the referee, iff a team get 8 yellow cards and 3 penalty's against them in one single match.... something must been wrong....btw all penalty's where fully correct.

  4. Already 2 orange tackles at Rapid Wien - Vitesse. Rumsas gave Yellow for the firstbone but a warning for the last tackles (minute 25) That tackles was probaly the worst

  5. Rumsas has made so many mistakes that it will take me another 45 minutes to describe them here. I'm sorry to say but he is really unsuitable for this level

    2. My top 5
      1. Missed at least YC but maybe RC card for Stojokic. Minute 24.45
      2. Missed Elbow Openda 34:10 + reaction coach Rapid at 34:22 (he did this mutiple times)
      3. First YC for Stojkovic at 40.39. 2nd one above
      4. Wrongly Dissalowed goal at 4742
      5. YC for Openda after a argue but a warning for the Rapid Wien player at 87.50

This cost me a lot of time so i expect a detailed report ;)

    3. Thanks, don't worry, as soon as a free full match download will be available, I can ensure that.

    4. Found a source online but without the chance to download.

      My opinions:
25' I think no more than YC bur very clear YC to be issued for reckless challenge, referee gives a warning.
35' the foul should have been whistled quicker, indeed, no reaction at first glance after this aerial collision is not good, however one could maybe consider the elbow as careless, YC wouldn't have been a mistake but rather harsh if you ask me.
41' the YC can't be assessed as 100% wrong due to the dangerous tackle after having fairly played ball but surely this was by far less YC than previous situation in 25'.
48' Regular goal but very difficult without VAR. Just a remark about that, given that VAR will be used only in final, these situations will be possible until semifinals. I don't know how much UEFA is ready for that.
88' Mutual misconducts, both players should have been booked, because the opponent provoked as well.

    5. Thank You! Some strange decisions during the whole match. Warning in minute 25 was strange because 2 bookings for less impact in the minutes before. Overall not much in control. You can see this perfect in te clip from the 2nd yellow card.

  6. Brilliant onside by Dabanovic's AR2 in Marseille 2nd goal.

    1. Wihout VAR, absolutely top call indeed! The second-last defender allowed this ONSIDE for less than a second!

  7. Returning from Conference League game in Turkey, Mariani, Tegoni and Marchetti have been replaced for serie A game Cagliari - Napoli, for which they were appointed, on Monday. Very likely one of them tested positive after the game.
New officials in Cagliari: Sozza, Lo Cicero, Volpi.

  8. Rapid Vienna vs. Vitesse Arnhem - Donatas Rumšas

    Key Scenes:

25’ - Reckless vs. SFP tackle by Rapid no.22
    https://send.cm/d/8uFw

38' - Reckless vs. SFP challenge by Rapid no.38 [no replay]
    https://send.cm/d/8uFz

48’ - Goal for Vitesse disallowed (offside) by Dovydas Sužiedėlis
    https://send.cm/d/8uFy

65’ - Second Yellow Card for Rapid no.22 (SPA challenge)
    https://send.cm/d/8uFx

    MtG:

1H was very challenging for the Lithuanian referee, a high-paced game with many foul duels to assess + nervous players. The early cautions were nailed on (the first a very good spot), but maybe the match would have benefitted with some more short, sharp whistles in this period (-> calming everyone down).

I’m sure that Rumšas was aware of this, not wanting to shoot too much of his munition too early (hence 25’), and trying to connect with players verbally. While he did well to act quickly against threats to his match control, I’m not really sure this tactic worked, with the game feeling unhinged at some moments, after some (minor) missed incidents.

Rapid players / bench and even crowd got more and more irritated at the end of the 1H, with four cautions sorted out to them, and some missed fouls in their favour. A missed striking incident at 35’ should have seen Vitesse no.7 booked, and maybe a yellow for a late challenge in front of the benches at 41’ by VIT would have calmed the temperature a bit.

In any case, Rumšas got to HT intact. The 2H was much a much calmer piece of football, where the ref from Lithuania simply punished the corresponding actions correctly with yellow cards. I didn’t note one disciplinary mistake in the second half. To highlight: his action against DtR time-wasting by Rapid was simply EXCELLENT, a masterclass in this regard for sure.

    Teammates:

AR2 Dovydas Sužiedėlis made a big mistake at 48’ to disallow a Vitesse goal, though the (lack of) reaction from their players, who also thought it was offside, shows that it was a fairly tricky scene. Sužiedėlis played a very good crossover ONside at 83’, so I think at 48’ he just lost concentration, didn’t take the ‘snapshot’ of where the attacker was when the shot came in, and then had to guess when the attacker got the ball. 7,9 for him.

There were a few scenes close to the benches, in the vicinities of AR1 Aleksandr Radius and fourth official Robertas Valikonis, where the final decision was only taken after visible delay. Maybe some teamwork problems? While Valikonis was ready to step in when required and showed strong soft skills, I think he should have clearly warned Rapid’s coach in the closing stages of the 1H, as he was getting more and more irate (* though, I am at television’s behest in assessing this, so maybe he did and it was simply not shown :)).

    Overall:

In a tough game, I think Donatas Rumšas comes out pretty well. Remember, we are not talking about ELITE category referees here, and this game a) showed why UEFA rightly estimate this referee as a talent, and, b) highlighted some areas for development on a high level. I don’t think Sužiedėlis is a bad AR, but his 48’ blackout was a big one, and is a black-mark however against the Lithuanian quartet.

    1. Given my comments above, it should come as no surprise that I disagree with your conclusion. In addition, you forgot a number of key scenes. They are above

    2. 41' - correct YC for reckless tackle
88' - perfectly managed scene IMO; we can't equate the actions of the respective Vitesse (trying to deceive the referee and then trying to start a fight) and Rapid (justifiably(!) shouting at a 'diving' opponent) players

I spoke about or clipped the other things/scenes you mentioned. What other mistakes do you think the referee team made in the match?

      Delete
    3. There were not really big mistakes but a lot of small ones. But I don't think we will agree given your interpretation of the 88 moment and your conclusion ''pretty well'' after all these clips ;) We clearly have a different standard. Let's agree to disagree
