  1. As Jesús Gil Manzano is appointed in London, here some very interesting clips from yesterday's game Granada - Villarreal in La Liga:

    28'

OFR for changing RC in YC.
Very problematic management before the OFR, with referee forced to delay the check and then booking some players. A very long time passes before final decision, having said that, I'm not 100% sure about the OFR, as the foul is NOT genuine, so the RC to me is not a very clear mistake.

    58'

Penalty after OFR for a reckless challenge, missed by referee.
I agree with VAR call in this case, it is quite clear.

    80'
    https://streamable.com/3drag6
Penalty for handball, well seen directly by referee.

    1. @28': One can reasonably say, that the attacker would not have reached the ball in a sufficient way without the foul, but I agree, that this is not clear given when the holding starts. Therefore the OFR is indeed doubtful.

Other two situations are quite clear. In 58', SFP needs to be considered, but I think, not neccessary, as the foot is curiously even over the opponent's head.

    2. Both 28’ and (especially!) 58’ are clear RCs IMO; the penalty at 80’ is definitely correct.

    3. @Mikael indeed about '28 I had to write "at least reckless", but I would have liked a RC for SFP as well, this intervention by VAR was for the minimum standard :)

      Delete
    4. 28' For me a clearly wrong intervention. IMO the striker can have a shot on goal from very close distance. And as you said, the pull is not genuine.

58' I can't see the exact amount of contact, but I think RC would also be an option here with that high boot making contact. What do you think Chefren?

      Thanks for the clips :)

    5. In Granada, VAR was De Burgos Bengoetxea, for CL game he will work as AVAR.

    6. Yes David, my first option is RC as well in 58', I wrote YC because it was the minimum for that challenge, hopefully in UEFA we will see red for that.

    7. I am really so confused?? The Second incident is a clear red card!!! Like that is dangerous play at its finest. The first incident is a red card all day as well, it’s the classic red card we never often see but once given var should stay clear!!

    1. Siebert has again his usual ARs. Despite his good performanes at the Arab Cup, Gittelmann was only a temporary replacement.

  3. Wow... The only positive thing to say about Rosetti coupled with Gil is that at least Rosetti is not with CdCG after latters EURO. Lets see what plans they have with Gil but Siebert with Rosetti would have made more sense to me :)

  4. No surprises in these appointments, both referees could be expected to get a R16 match.
Gil Manzano with one of the (IMO, on paper) easiest games of the round, but with Rosetti. So a good chance to recommend himself for more.
And Siebert in his KO stage debut with a match that seems a sensible choice given his current status. Not one of the biggest clashes, but could still be a difficult task.

    1. The appointment of Siebert clearly shows the difference between him and the other new Elite referees. Being appointed for Villarreal - Juventus is a very remarkable achievement, as you know there is always a big focus by Italian teams and I must admit that I'm happy Rosetti made this choice. Still, they have the chance to manage the leg with a very big name for second game in case of controversial performance in Spain, but I think as for now they don't think like that, they just think Siebert is already at the top of Elite. Appointing him without a committee member, differently from the other new Elite referees in CL, confirms that as well.
It is interesting to remember how everything started for Siebert one year ago in that Italian - Spanish duel Napoli - Granada, in that KO stage he started his journey culminated in EURO and then the promotion in Elite.

About Gil Manzano, I'm very curious about the Spanish situation, it seems as, and this can be another confirmation, for some reasons Mateu Lahoz is not seen as before, maybe aftter having attended big tournaments and with CL final, the focus is now different. Still, I think the poor performances of Del Cerro Grande in recent times are a factor of that.
I also think that very likely after WC both Mateu and Del Cerro will leave so Gil Manzano should start to think about being Elite nr. 1 not too late in the close future.

      Delete
    2. The scenario when neither Lahoz or del Cerro Grande will go in Qatar became more and more probable with every appointment. Considering the performances of each one, I don't think is undeserved.

      Delete
    3. Do you confirm that most probably end of this year, Mateu, Del Cerro Grande, Orsato and Cakir will leave international scenario ?

      Delete
    4. Yes these are the most likely names to retire (being the oldest among Elite referees), but notihng is decided. They could all continue on paper. We will see.

  5. Chefren what are the numbers of Red card given to coaches and members of team on the bench in Serie A!! Like every match I watch there is always a red card for coaches!! What is the tolerance level in Italy because you hardly see coaches sent off!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not so much expert in statistics, however the level of tolerance in serie A for coaches is really high. Before being sent off, most of referees allow everything to them. They are always out from technical area, they protest for every decision, fourth officials don't take any action.
Last but not least Mourinho yesterday in Roma - Verona, he started a battle against referee Pairetto from the beginning. He saw red only in te very last minute of the game.

      Delete
    2. Another Red card for the Atlanta Coach , you can’t go 2 matches without seeing a red card in Seria A for coaches!! Either the coaches have a terrible terrible attitude or the tolerance level in serie A is quite low and that’s very much acceptable, because in premier league, they hardly care but just warn or at most give a yellow card.

      Delete
    3. Some coaches are very nervous this season because they don't accept referees decisions. When I say that who officiates in serie A has already a certain "background of experience" if compared to other (even major) European top leagues, I think that I'm not wrong. In the specific situation of today, a goal scored by Atalanta was disallowed by AR1 Costanzo for an offside assessed as active, but player didn't play ball. He was just close to attacker, running, but the ball came to another attacker who was in regular position. This incident is similar to al the previous ones we had this season (it was mentioned in the last discussion), like Milan - Napoli and Torino - Venezia.
The criterion seems to be: disallowing all these goals with even only an influence on paper and not in reality.

      Delete
    4. Disallowed goal and RC:
      https://streamable.com/w3icqz
Excellent body language and way of showing RC, if you ask me.
BTW Serie A and Premier League are two different world, Chiagozie, you can't compare at all them. Said with all respect for England, but some PL referees wouldn't have "long life" in Italy.

  6. To add some more Gil Manzano clips - he handled one of the key games in the Saudi title race last weekend, Al Ittihad vs. Al Nassr (his ARs were Nevado Rodríguez + Taleb Al-Marri; VAR was Hugo Miguel). Here are the two big decisions he made:

5' - penalty given to Al Ittihad (impeding)
    https://youtu.be/vMk8ocQIon4?t=6

59' - red card to Al Nassr no.94 (violent conduct)

    1. Sorry but this is not a penalty, neither violent conduct. Poor refereeing.

      Delete
    2. The RC looks OK to me (intentional hitting, borderline intensity).
But the penalty seems indeed clearly wrong - I think, VAR should have intervened.

      Delete
    3. 59' RC is clearly correct IMO, very good and brave decision by Manzano! I would want a VARint if RC is not given on the field. It is a strike with considerable force IMO.

5' PK indeed also wrong for me..

  8. Lindhout was just called by VAR, but ignored it after watching the footage and decided to not give a penalty. Bad decision, to put it mildly.

    1. One of the worst decisions I've seen lately...

      Delete
    2. In the meantime in an ESPN-interview Lindhout already admitted to have made a mistake by not awarding the penalty.
Another interesting situation occurred in 82’ minute when a handball in the box was not penalized by referee nor VAR. Defender sliding in the box, with the arm perpendicular on the pitch, was hit by the ball on the outstretched arm. In the past the laws explicitly stated this is not considered ‘support arm’, but this passage has been removed. Anybody who can provide a video maybe?

  12. No problems for Siebert so far.

  13. Quite eventless 1H from Gil Manzano in London.

Both teams are playing fair, focused on their football, so he correctly chose a laissez-faire approach, only blowing for clear FKs, foul selection was good.

A good advantage played in 29', a little mistake of positioning in 39' when he was hit by the ball (he could've played on instead of stoping play too, as Lille got the ball back right after and no promising attack was created either).

AR1 with two nice onsides (10',41'), AR2 has been unchallenged until now. Good piece of work from the Spanish crew.

  14. When Manzano runs, he looks like he is running very fast. Not exactly sprinting but accelarating quickly. That makes his fitness level seem very high, though I haven't been following his positioning. Also, this sounds superficial, but he makes a very sharp first impression in that his kit is really sharp looking and he has a strong physical presence.

  15. Borderline Red card in Villareal, however, no detailed VAR check, minute 72.

  16. 74' Maybe a RC for Rabiot? No VAR intervention!

    ReplyDelete
  17. IMO red is supportable for Rabiot, VAR should intervene

    1. Red is supportable, I agree, but is it mandatory?
The real issue is whether this is a clear and obvious mistake or not.

      Delete
    2. I change my mind after watching replay.
Yes, it is a mandatory red. I understand that it may difficult for Siebert to catch. VAR must intervene in this case

    1. The Spanish commentator says "tiene suerte que no lo agarra de lleno" and in my opinion this is the assessment made by VAR. Not a full contact, and the level of intensity have convinced Dankert in staying silent. These can be the only arguments.
Also, watching live sequence, I see the typical attitude by German referees, very often made by Brych as well, to wait before showing card. This can't work in games with teams from a certain football culture, they want to see immediately the card otherwise they will protest. Having said that, the YC to keeper is fully correct, but we can discussion these minutes in which the game presented its difficulty to Siebert.

    2. Chefren: before you said this: This can't work in games with teams from a certain football culture, they want to see immediately the card otherwise they will protest. In my view referees should act in this case way stricter and start giving yellow cards to the protesters......then they will stop with this annoying behavior! Iff Siebert immediatly showed 2/3 yellow cards when they came to him to protest... it will stop! This behaviour... even in Southern Europe/latin America should not be accepted!

  21. Good performance by Gil Manzano in Chelsea-Lille.
2H was as unchallenging as the 1H, the Spaniard kept the line he adopted in first half and it worked well.

2 correct cautions to CHE12 (reckless tackle, 83') and to LOSC11 (SPA-holding, 87'), both were mandatory. Otherwise he has been in full control of the game, well accepted. His fitness was fantastic, as usual. 8.4 should be the mark.

We'll see his next appointments, but I think he and committee will be pleased about tonight. While DCG is in a quite poor form and Mateu lost the trust of committee recently, he may be the main candidate from Spain to something more in this KO stage.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Not fully convinced by Daniel Siebert today, mainly because of his too in-the-background approach. Especially the first 15-20 minutes of the second half were quite hectic and I expected the German to take the lead and slow down the game like he brilliantly did that in the past. In my opinion, no long-lasting warnings, no sign of trying to limit the number of fouls led to even more fouls and some conflicts. That's a critic on a very high level though. We should remember that not every game is easy to adapt an appropriate approach to.

    Regarding big(ger) calls:
22' - good no-penalty call (exaggerated fall after little kick)
45+1' - missed YC for reckless use of arm?
50' - possible penalty (no good replay) vs offside call
73' - YC Rabiot (JUV) after high studs challenge - reckless vs SFP; German VAR as we know from Bundesliga - no intervention because there is a very slight argument that the contact was rather a scratch than a forceful 'push' with studs
80' - missed YC for reckless trailing leg tackle; the fouled player left the field of play quite severely injured; referees should be very alert in this aspect when assessing tackles, such tackles are always highlighted in RAPs
90+4' - Penalty incident - smart holding by defender, rather not a clear and obvious mistake

Btw, the commentator here said that both Daniel Siebert and Rafael Foltyn are of Polish descent and Siebert even speak Polish. :)

All videos most likely tomorrow morning.

    1. The foul before Villarreal goal could have been whistled, classic situation in which I think that VAR intervention would be wrong because too particular, but the challenge is from behind without the ball in target. You can apply a certain threshold for foul detection, but some situations will appear always as fouls.
"Background approach" that in my opinion didn't work in this game, I share your analysis, we must also say that this was his first game of a certain level in the CL KO stage but a better performance could have been expected.
80' is a very clear mistake by both referee and AR2, the latter should have reported foul and a very clear YC.

      Delete
    2. Yes, Siebert was not by the book, but isn't this approach what UEFA want nowadays?

      Delete
  24. What did you guys think about the Villareal player who clearly asked for a YC at 22' with gestures?

I know some referees might punish that behaviour and if I remember correctly, asking for YC's was a topic in the UEFA winter course as well?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thats right, but I am not sure that UEFA would reward any referee doing that really consequently...
I saw Siebert often the last minths and... Well, this was below his normal good level, he had just a bad day. Shit happens.
