    So, the same strategy as Rapallini with MKD, we have now Calderas with NIR a first test, before something bigger, in case.
    Very interesting to see how she will handle this game.
    About the other game, Küng should be the first assistant referee, if I'm not wrong, to get appointments with two different referees, we can't know whether this was planned before the start of the tournament, or not.

      There are 25 assistants for 13 referees, so it could not be avoided to use one AR for two referees.

      We can easily guess that it was for appointing a referee with the same language of Calderas, so this appointment is a bit extra-ordinary indeed, and different from the others. There weren't other possible choices!

      On the other hand, Huerta might be planned for her second game as referee in group C or D on MD 2.
      Also Sanchez repeats Austria as VAR. This could have been avoided by using Cuadra in that role, but so far it seems, there is a clear order in the VAR duos from the same country.

      Perhaps in group D but acting as 4th in MD 2 she could have been appointed to C/D in MD3 as referee. In any case I feel this appointment could easily have been avoided.

      As fas as i know Interational referees should speak al English very well, so why then a 4th official and VAR team from Spain again for Austria....isn't that the easy choice.... why not appoint other VAR and 4thofficials, iff they speak al English??

      I thought so until some time ago, but it seems this is valid only for UEFA (having to pass an English test, European official language). I don't know how it exactly works with referees from other confederations becoming FIFA, but you can be sure that very big names from that confederations didn't / don't speak English.

      I'm sure that's right, I still would be amazed if Calderas doesn't have some understanding of English if not fluent. Otherwise, she would have to be paired with Huerta for every appointment which limits the appointments.

      Well, that rises another question for me, iff not al fifa referees are able to speak proper English.... what seems impossible for me....How Fifa organises those meetings with referees on the world cup, or organises the meetings before the worldcup?

      I’m sure she speaks English, at least on a basic level. The observer and delegate are from Sweden and Montenegro respectively, I doubt they will communicate with her in Spanish.

      In their referee report, the observer can indicate a box saying "English to be improved". If that box is being ticked 3 times, the referee will get English classes via Skype from an instructor selected by UEFA. Within a certain period of time the official should pass the English test.

      And @Eric: they usually use interpreters at meetings, for example during World Cups etc. So I guess they will have an English/Spanish interpreter for our Spanish tongue friends.

      In addition to my comment above: I think you overestimate the English language skills of many UEFA officials, especially those from Eastern Europe and Spanish language countries.... Not meant to be racist or whatsoever but I've been there myself and seen it many times...

    I wouldn't have appointed Frappart in that match prior to the first set of appointments in MD2. Seeing as UEFA are not concerned using the same VAR's for the same teams, then I can see this appointment would make sense.

      Higler is appointed for a game to be played today.
      There should be other reasons for this new appearance, but still quite particular to have her in a AVAR role, one could have expected replacements maybe only for main referees.

    Interesting minutes. Maybe with a bit of delay by referee and a look at AR before (this is very often told to referees before making such big calls on Quick attacks), the penalty decision could have been avoided, but never a negative thing, the call was absolutely correct.

      Officially: Damkova. In reality: Rosetti. Damkova proposes appointments to Rosetti, who confirms them (or makes adjustments) before they will be communicated to anybody else.

      Not a real challenge for her, a few fouls and no cards.
      If committee wanted to make a detailed idea, I think this game didn't help. But of course it is not referee's fault, so she should get a second game, let's see which one. One could predict a decisive tie but with a team clearly favorite and maybe the other already close to elimination? This could be the next scenario, I think.

    I am a supporter from England but I thought that was never a penalty. Did not appear to be any consequential contact to take down the legs of the attacker. Also, the English player did not appeal suggesting that she wasn’t fouled.

      No, it was a 3 times holding, until the attacker finally fell. We play soccer, this is not wrestling. Reminded me to Italy vs South Korea in the WC with our friend from Ecuador, who finally destroyef his performance in favour of South Korea with his huge arrogance. But the first penalty after holding was simply correct, even if the Italians, as always, did not want to believe.

      It's football, not handball, the Norwegian defender used her arms/hands to push, and pull her opponent 3 times, where in the laws u guys can find this is legal? Maybe it's soft....but i said it before.... Why a defender takes the risk in the penaltybox to use her hands to defend, while she knows a referee can give a penalty for that, and then when that happened.... we are all so surprised! For me still a clear penalty!

      In the laws off the game at rule 12
      A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player does commits one of the following offences:
      • holds an opponent;
      • blocks an opponent with contact;
      as we al know a direct free kick in the penalty area.... is a penalty!

      The laws of the game also says the goalkeeper can hold the ball only 6 seconds. How often to do you see a referee go exactly be the book? This was not a foul. Holding an opponent is a part of the game now. She fell after the holding...

      I think the 6 seconds rule and holding is quit a weird comparisation iff you ask me.... holding in general is not allowed, so why suddenly in the penalty area it should be allowed... one referee is stricter than the other with it, but thats the risk the defender takes, and this time she got punished by the referee, doesn't mean the referee is wrong!

      I get the feeling that in Eric van Marwijk's utopian vision of how football should be played. The players would run around the pitch with their arms glued to their sides so as to never run the risk of physically touching another player. Keep dreaming bud! That's not how football is played in the real world. In the real world, players who dive should be punished not rewarded.

      Eric, you can’t hide behind the book. Not if you watched all the UEFA RAP clips of the past years, this would be never an offence.

      The main question is: did she fall because of the contact or did she “make use” of the contact. Definitely the latter. It was close to simulation >> gave me Neymar WC2018 (Kuipers) vibes. In Real speed it looked something, in slowmo its nothing. IMO it is a shame that VAR can’t overrule this decision. UEFA Protocol sucks.

      In the real world.... i'm a certtified referee for already 14 years, and yes i admitt i'm quit strict with fysical play, and no i would not allow pushing, kicking and pulling arround! Uefa and Fifa should not do either, yes it's maybe more attractive (financial maybe good for uefa, and sponsors), but referees are not there for the sponsors, and for the tv, they are there to apply the laws off the game, off course with some feeling for the game and to take care off players safety! i got so many times compliments(i take care off the players safety) about my refereeing,...i give players a lot off freedom, don't give many cards, even i'm quit talkative, and allow players to do to me, but i'm strict with misbehavior, pushing, kicking and pulling around when it's not needed and 99 procent off my matches staff and players are happy after the match, in 14 years never got big problems

    If that penalty was given against my team I would be upset. The initial arm across was not enough for a foul and there was no subsequent contact to cause her legs to move the way they did. I would argue simulation as it was done to deceive.

      Turpin also had the issue of not awarding 2YC, but of course we had the offside decision here - we’ll see what UEFA does, this won’t get any attention due to score so maybe she can stay because of that

    In 67' a very interesting situation, even potential RC for DOGSO, I think. However, correct by VAR to stay silent because we can't be 100% sure about possession of ball to be gained. Fully careless contact while running by defender on attacker, I think that she didn't even see opponent coming, but clear foul. I think it was totally missed by Hussein, difficult to spot. A RC wouldn't have been questioned by VAR, but for me YC expected decision for SPA.

      for me this is more accident than foul. dont know if offside in app. but i would ask: who initiates the contact? for me the attacker crosses the pathway of the defender and not viceversa...and I dont see any extra movement by the defender. she doesnt even see the attacker...if you give the foul, then can only be yc...rc impossible as there is no ball-control

      That is what i tould a few days before.We gave many referees like Husseim, Staubli, Adamkova, monzul they were great. But now, they make so many misstakes or forgot the feeling for the game. I dont know if the countrys have other options. I saw söder from germany in s game and grundbacher from switzerland last year in australia. I dont know why the uefa didnt change some referees.

    The truth about Reim Hussein is that she's consistently shown that she's a "so-so" referee at best. She has absolutely zero feel for the game. She is completely clueless in regards to the true "spirit of the game". She has ruined too many sonorous matches with her incomprehensible approach to officiating. However, this reflects poorly on DFB, as she is the "best" they have and have no better options. Until UEFA/FIFA realizes that she's not worth having as a referee any longer. She'll continue on her merry way ruining matches. And no, the final score does not in any way shape, or form excuse her from her cluelessness.
    Harsh? Yeah! Deserved? Definitely! Because women's football deserves better!

      Perhaps "absolutely zero feel for the game", "completely clueless" and "ruined too many... matches" is a bit of an exaggeration, Sheriff? Heaven knows why I remember this (:D), but I recall you praising her GS performances at WWC 2019 too. Excluding the following Norway vs. Australia game in that R16 where her DOGSO red call was thrown out by FIFA internally, I can't recall other (sonorous) matches "ruined" by her (- and a RC at 104' in a game which then goes to a penalty competition is hardly "ruining", to be honest).

      I agree, btw: the penalty was rather wrong, the attacker fell of her own accord after the ball was no longer under control. Given that some kind of holding did exist though, the situation is more RUSDEN (-> correct non-intervention) than PORFRA pk2 (-> missed intervention) for UEFA. Hussein is a good referee IMO and personally I think a rejection here would be a bit exaggerated. From the times that I've watched her (inc. a Portugal vs. Finland qualifier with, iirc, three penalties) it does seem though that she suffers from what is a quite rare thing as elite football referee - being a bit 'too courageous'.

      There is a clear resemblabce to the Barcelona-Chelsea CL Final, 2021: A dubious penalty (then there was no contact at all, this time there was the initial one - grabbing the upper arm/shoulder of Wright. The second "holding" was "assisted" by Wright's simulation - a rare occasion of cheating among females). The contest was "killed" (then Barcelona went on for a 4-0 lead at half-time, now the margin at half-time was even bigger).
      It was the same laid-back approach by a German VAR (then, Dankert, now Dingert) choosing not to intervene. The opposite approach was demonstrated by Kavanagh, overzealously actually overruling his compatriot's RC decision.

      I agree with you Mikael. I saw a questionable penalty - yes. But if I compare the overall-performance with the shown performances so far, I would not say it was less. I would even say I saw one of only a few performances with no missed foul calls or cards. I saw a good understanding of the game (f.e. good application of advantage, etc.), I saw good communication with the players and a reliable structure in application of Law12. From a footballers perspective this match could not be ruined by a ref...the only question was how many England would score until half-time. Yes, the penalty was a bit of a can opener, but when you see the many blatant defensive errors of Norway...it is then easy to blame the ref, but in this case way too harsh...

      How can a top ref (Marie-Soleil) cannot stick to her initial on-field call ? yes VAR is a non-sense, but how can a top ref cannot stand for her field decision even after reviewing ? Is it pressure ? is it fear of denying var ? I may feel i'm has-been but where is sole discretion of the ref if the big boss is not any longer on the field but in video center ? After Rebecca who is also excellent ref, a second one is also fallen to VAR Diktat. Var is a good thing to correct big mistakes but France-Italy and this last clip are awful for credibility of VAR and more, for referees who gave up their power to off-field refs.

      VAR was Carol Anne Chenard (Canada, same country as referee Beaudoin), former two-time World Cup referee. She was immediately appointed as VAR for another matches, so her intervention was supported by Concacaf. She just followed the current guidelines from FIFA that make differentiation between a full contact and a glancing contact. Like it or not, this is the instruction and match officials have to follow it.

    Sian Massey-Ellis replaces the Cypriot AR in Foster's team, if we compare the appointment with the previous one for the Welsh, but this can't give us any clue, because there can be many reasons. Maybe the fact that the appointments have been published with delay today can be just a small thing in favor of that... one could also say, as somebody wrote, that committee wants to appoint Sian Massey in many games and not only with Welch. We will see the next appointment, in case, for the English team...

    Welch can only be appointed in Group B & C and I can see really DEN v SPA in group B as the logical choice (if she is to be appointed)(as Staubli, Monzul, Demetrescu, Frappart have already been appointed there and Hussein can't whilst Caldera/Huerta as 4th could only do FIN v GER). All have potentially a second game to come.
    So we should know more tomorrow!!

    That should be Welch, Hussein and Frappart out - maybe not for the entire tournament, as they represent big associations and the options would be very limited without them, but they should be out for the final at the very least and if UEFA didn’t so far, they will probably save someone now to ensure they remain with a suitable option

      For me the best performances (and we haven't seem Martincic yet) are Foster, Huerta and Lehtovaara. I was also pleasantly surprised (as I haven't seen that much of them) by Demetrescu & Olofsson. I understand that some haven't been tested yet, I like their style.
      I really need to see other angles as from my point of view Frappart was in complete control and as EX England Ref said had the respect of the players!

      IMO Monzul and Lehtovaara are kept in the shadow so far. They are big candidates based on that strategy. Their countries don’t play a role either.

      Regarding Frappart - Les Blues are one of the favorites. I can see her getting a QF with other VAR and then go home if the French indeed reach the SF

      You can stop for dogso, but she did a clear signal to play on and soft foul according to her. It's maybe not the best call but i prefer to see a ref who remains the boss on field can one to be overturned by var even though they made the right call. Here it's just an interpretation foul. She may be wrong but i'm not far from thinking she made the right decision with a soft holding IMO. Nobody will talk about after. She remains the leader of ref team on field and did not undergo var diktat.

    The non-intervention is just a small footnote here, as it did not influence the outcome of the game. Germans won and are qualified. Comparable to the opening game at euro’21 where just the VAR was blamed for a non-intervention

    Crucial mistake by ref and especially VAR. VAR should be out for the rest of the tournament. Frappart did a really good job - and destroyed her performance in that situation, pretending that she could judge the situation, but... she couldn't and she was left alone by the VAR, who simply failed to do his job. And THAT was simply unbelievable.

    Popp did fall of her own accord btw. But I think we can all see that this was a clear mistake to play on/missed RC. Frappart to be rejected though? I suspect not (Millot more likely to get the boot, then she can stay without problems).

    Besides: I was stunned how little 'armoury' Frappart presented in the ≈half-an-hour after the blown DOGSO call. Control of the players actions was close to ZERO. Only some a-bit panicky foul calls saved her from losing match control. And this was not really a hard game at all. Hussein and even Monzul by far had a better style to be honest.

    Remember - the Frenchwoman's rivals to referee a match at the FIFA World Cup finals (we can be sure that one will ref a match) in a few months are: a Rwandan lady who only came into focus by being (actually) competent and from Africa at the Olympics (W), and a woman who officiates in the third tier of Japanese football(!!!), making her J.2 debut only last weekend.

      Quite possible that Overtoom will not be appointed again - very (too) weak at Olofsson's side in BELISL. Welch and Rashid to FINGER would be my guess as well, but IMO rather with Irodotou as second AR + NED/POL VAR duo. Actually, the Cypriot lineswoman HAS to continue her tournament or UEFA lose huge credibility, risk big damage to internal morale - Irodotou was 100% without fault in NEDSWE, but jettisoned from Foster's team only because of Welch/Kavanagh inadequacy (-> need to keep FA happy, so place Massey-Ellis with Foster-O'Neill for a British Isles trio).

      @Kavanagh/Overtoom: NIRENG and FINGER are not decisive anymore, therefore I think it would be no problem to appoint them again there. And of course, we don't know (only hope), whether UEFA really disliked the VAR intervention.
      @Frappart: I don't think, it's completely impossible, e.g. Steinhaus had BELNED in EURO 2017, when both could meet Germany in the next round. Furthermore, she can't really referee in the other groups (Group A would be a quite short break), so the only alternative would be a direct QF. This could happen, but also is not ideal after the mistake yesterday.
      @Irodotou: Good point. I was just assuming, that she might be unavailable and therefore replaced in Foster's team.

    My opinion: not the best angle to make an assessment for Frappart, last replay is very clear about that, she couldn't see the real intensity of the holding as it happened on the other side than her point of view (body of player covering it). However, she made a gesture like she had seen and it was not enough to whistle. Now everything is about what she saw, as said, I think she didn't see exaclt the holding and it is possible she just thought about a body vs body charge,
    In my opinion foul was very clear and DOGSO scenario as well, no doubts that attacker would have reached ball alone, without defender's action.
    Now, into VAR question: I think Millot added the holding argument and the fact that Frappart had seen something, so two factors in favor of supporting referee, we all know how it works with holdings and the intensity... but I think he couldn't be sure that Frappart had saw it. It can be a missed intervention by VAR, but to me, according to protocol, we are at a very extreme border, with referee making signals about the incidents and the fact that an intensity must be assessed. I would have liked an OFR, but if one wants to be 100% strict to protocol, maybe still OK... apart from that, significant mistake by Frappart on the pitch, but as we could see, it was difficult for her to see it.

    OFR in Sweden - Switzerland to revoke a penalty whistled by Huerta de Aza. I think correct intervention, defender played ball before and then it was like attacker kicked her, never a foul by defender.
    Interesting remark by Italian commentator about which I agree, differently from men's football, women rarely take advantage on such situations to get an easy penalty.

      Agree that no penalty is (obviously) the more satisfying conclusion, but Sánchez Martínez's intervention is actually not justified according to UEFA's vision, right? A clear charging-ish contact did occur.

      If I wanted to say sth really polemicist: if Sánchez wasn't personally invested in his compatriot (and friend's?) fate at this tournament, then he probably wouldn't have intervened... :)

      And it all gets a bit stupid, really, because >90% of football people see an intervention here as a (very) good use of VAR. Also for FIFA.

      A fully correct intervention by VAR in FIFA line, but indeed you are right Mikael, for UEFA, if we think at the strict protocol wanted by Rosetti, there can be doubts. Very small doubts, but still not a 100% clean decision (contact with opponent after ball). However, let me also add, this incident has something more in favor of intervention, than being a borderline case, you will surely agree. I think committee will accept this decision without problems, it was expected.

    Reporter in my country initially thought it was a PK for the push :)
    VAR showed her different footage though. Maybe she had a wrong perception on the pitch (e.g. a foot on a foot)

    The fysica strong and tall Swedish team is free-kick oriented. In other words, control the ball on Swiss halve, wait for the contact or push and fall down to win a free-kick. As a neutral watcher, not a big fan of that, and I’d love to see a referee take risk and/or act against that… Not easy though!

    83' possible penalty for Switzerland, in my opinion contact was clear, but maybe it was outside the box. A few seconds before, I think that she missed another foul, this one clearly outside, on a corner kick action, due to the position where it occurred (referee not 100% alert, similar to Adamkova issue in her game).

    Polyxénī Īrodótou back as AR2 with Foster according to UEFA.com. Considering they had "Sian Massey" without her country code, the initial appointment might have just been a mistake by the website. Or not.

      There can be arguments about possible COVID issues (now maybe solved with a negative result) and Massey in case would have been her replacement, this can also explain the delay of appointment, we can't know.

    Uff, what a start for AR2 Staša Špur: Both her flags for POR attacks (latter even led to a goal) were correct, but she immediately flagged and did not follow the game. Martinčić allowed play to continue and then whistled once she considered the attack concluded...

    Staša Špur with two offside flags without waiting for the end of the action. Ivana Martinčić allowed the play to continue, in second case a goal was scored. Both decisions correct by assistant referee but surely something must be reviewed in terms of cooperation, you don't create a feeling with your teammate by acting like this (see her face when goal was scored). Maybe AR thought that it wasn't a promising attack in the two situations, but she was proved to be wrong by the goal scored.

    I like that Spur raises the flag early on these relatively clear offside positions. That's how it should always be. You should only wait for tight decisions IMO. I know that there is another rule…

    Possible SFP when goal scored, very good decision with a YC, because could have been easily missed. Low head and rather accidental incident make the yellow fully supportable according to UEFA.

    Elliot, which game are you watching?
    Player turns inside, has her foot taken, goes over. Initial view was she we tripped herself but a different angle showed otherwise. Exactly why VAR is there (Im sure Frappert is watching wishing her VAR had done same last night)
