  1. So Mazic and Skomina tomorrow!!

  2. No surprise today. So tomorrow Mazic in Madrid and Skomina in München?

    1. Why not the other way around? :)
Mazic was appointed before 0-3 in Turin being the candidate for final? But Skomina`s appointment happened yesterday or maybe on Friday

    2. I really don't understand the point of bringing in Skomina in the appointments by the Committee... Unnecessary and illogical!!

      Delete
    3. That said, if he has to be a candidate for the Final, then he shouldn't be in a Semi-final and from that that perspective bringing him in for an already decided Real Madrid v Juventus would be a good idea... So I'll say it's Mazic to Bayern and Skomina to Madrid!!

      Delete
  3. Still no kuipers despite refereeing in eredivise every week. But,why is nobody talking about mateu lahoz for final? Inexperience or because of Spanish teams likely to go all the way? @soham,if we have classico final, will the committee allow lahoz if he's considered Worthy?

    1. There wasn`t precident at UEFA competition that match between one country teams was refereed by the referee of this country

      Delete
    2. No Mateu can't referee Spanish teams in UCL, that's the convention followed traditionally... Also I don't think he's ready for a final yet so we can't wait for a couple of seasons more... And coming to Kuipers' absence, I'm struggling to find explanations... Real Madrid v Juventus would've been an ideal game to bring him back but Committee has spilled it out by bringing in Skomina... I at least expect that we will see him in EL QF and in case of a Classico SF he will be required!!

      Delete
    3. I could imagine Skomina to EL, especially after all what happened in Lazio - Salzburg, surely the return match needs one of the top class referees of Europe.

      Delete
    4. The fact that appointment was made on Friday can allow that it was for Europa League. We will see tomorrow.

      Delete
    5. As others have said, a referee can't handle a match in which at least one of the teams is of the same nationality. If both are, that doesn't change (for now, at least).

That said, and with the appointments management he has had this season, I've the feeling that, from now and given that his performances in Europe are good enough, if there is an available slot for a spanish referee in the final, he will get it. For instance, if Atlético doesn't qualify for EL final, I can expect Mateu Lahoz there.

About Kuipers, there has been talk ongoing for a few matchdays now. He has been predicted for both UCL and UEL. He has appeared in none. Let's see if he makes it to the next rounds (which I think he should). Could be a candidate for the final if it is Madrid-Barcelona.

      Delete
    6. Kuipers already had a CL final, so he isn't a candidate anymore.

Vincic has a domestic match on Friday, that rules out Skomina for the EL.

Soham, it seems you are "attacking" the Committee just because you'd like to appoint Kuipers (old story). Why would Skomina need to skip appointments just because of Kuipers?

      Delete
    7. That said, your are obviously assuming that Skomina might "steal" Kuipers' appointment. Do you have any proof that Kuipers was planned at all?

      Delete
    8. Do you recall first news when it seemed that Skomina won't be appointed (domestic appointments of Jug and Praprotnik). I only shared this information, without blaming or accusing anyone!

      Delete
    9. And it seems you're attacking me because Skomina is your favourite and I've written something about him... I haven't even taken Kuipers' name for once... Some referee was appointed (be that Kuipers or anyone else) , then Skomina has been brought in his place... In view that is unnecessary and illiogical, and just because I'm spoken about Skomina you're again on me (old story too)!!

      Delete
    10. I'm not blaming Skomina or anyone here... And if it wasn't Skomina there wasn't any other than candidate than Kuipers... Forget about Kuipers... Whoever was initially appointed should've got the match and it was unnecessary to being Skomina in... That's my view... It's not about Skomina stealing the appointment, it's about that I'm not agreeing with Committee's choices that's it... And overall if I want to see Kuipers get appointed, there's no harm in that... And there is no "blaming" or "accusing" Skomina for once...

      Delete
    11. That said I firmly believe that the Committee has stolen someone's appointment and given it to Skomina... That's not a great thing to do when the matches are already almost pre decided... And if the final is Real Madrid v Barcelona I think someone like Cakir has to do a 2nd final... An EL Classico with Skomina or Mazic as referees will have all the chances of being a disaster as it's a completely different ball game and these refs have never ever been in the middle of such atmosphere... That's just my opinion and I hope Skomina fans won't attack me for it!!

      Delete
    12. I'm aware that Kuipers has already handled a CL final, but I don't think that really should exclude him. Real Madrid-Barcelona in the final is a really tough and difficult match. In my opinion, it needs one of the very top UEFA referees. Kuipers, Çakir in his current form, Brych... personally I don't really think Skomina belongs to that group.

      Delete
    13. I just think that Kuipers wont appear at all in Champions League. I never saw a referee directly appointed in semifinal in this competition.
Maybe Europa League, but not sure.
Also, one must underline the big trust on Makkelie by committee, the young Dutch in a way replaced Kuipers in this KO stage.

      Delete
    14. Yes and Makkelie needs to be developed well... The baton will be passed over to him after the World Cup as Kuipers made it clear... From Euro onwards it will be Makkelie representing Dutch refereeing in all big tournaments!!

      Delete
    15. @Chefren This is exactly where my question lies to the Committee... A referee is fit since March, he has cleared all rigorous fitness tests for the World Cup, he is regularly whistling top division matches in his country every week, he has not received a poor mark this entire season in Europe, he is a considerably good officiating form... Why is that referee not appointed for the KO stages yet?? Is it for prevention?? Whatever reason they might have, it's illogical!!

      Delete
    16. Soham, first of all, try to calm down. As I already wrote once, I'm too old to be a "fan" of anyone. Of course I am fond of Skomina as we are both Slovenians, but that's it. I support him as I support Slovenian national teams in every sport, for example. I try to discuss objectively and IMO you are getting irrational sometimes. It is a general consensus that Skomina is at least a strong candidate for the CL final. I have no problem with opinions that he isn't up to it etc, everyone has a right to think so. But saying that the appointment of an Elite referee, who is a final candidate, considering there aren't many other options for various reasons, is "illogical", "unnecessary", that he needs to "rest" etc, that I cannot buy. And that's all, no matter we are talking about Skomina, Mazic or John Smith.

      Delete
    17. Soham, you should ask directly committee for knowing that.
We can't know whether Kuipers has been appointed or not, it is indeed possible that he has not been appointed at all, because, after an injury, UEFA doesn't want to risk him in big games, in addition, a major tournament is already waiting for him.

      Delete
    18. In my opinion, whoever out of Kuipers, Mazic, Skomina is left out on Wednesday should get a EL QF and then a CL SF. My choice would be Skomina for that, but it would make sense for all of them.
Kuipers should get 1-2 international matches to have him ready for (a good) WC.
For the CL final, in my opinion, Skomina deserves it a little bit more than Mazic based only on performances, but the Serbian might be a better choice looking at the future. Also in case of Clasico, I feel Mazic might fit better.

      Delete
    19. @Chefren : Yes, prevention is the only logic I can think of :)

@Sale : If he was appointed from before it was fine, but to bring him in after 1st leg when 3 ties are almost pre decided IMO is unnecessary... A rest in between R16 and SF could've freshened him up, who knows! That's what I think... And for me too Skomina is the prime candidate for this year's final and ahead of Mazic... And for that I would have wanted him to do a CL R16, EL QF and then the CL finals which is more often than not the case for referee whistling the Final!!

      Delete
    20. There are also two other options. First being that Skomina was appointed earlier. The domestic appointments from which Praprotnik and Jug were removed are in fact two postponed matches. The appointments for those were made in March already and maybe the fact that they were changed on Friday is only a coincidence. Maybe the web administrator of Slovenian football federation simply forgot to refresh the web page before.

The other theoretical options is of course that Praprotnik and Jug were removed for other reasons. I was checking but I couldn't find any official explanation though.

      Delete
    21. If that's the case my apologies to the Committee... I shared my opinion pertaining to a particular situation and that's it :) Is Slavko Vincic confirmed on Friday btw??

      Delete
    22. Yes. Slavko Vincic is still appointed for Friday 13th of April in “semi important “ match in Slovenian 2nd league.

      Delete
    23. They should change it... I can understand Vincic is only going to be AAR but it will be hectic to whistle a match in Slovenia on Friday after being involved in a CL match in Spain or Germany on Wednesday!!

      Delete
    24. Many many years ago I arrived by plane from Greece in the morning and I was refereeing a match in Slovenia on the same day in the evening. :) One can manage it, but it could be avoided, for sure.

      Delete
    25. This thing with Kuipers reminds me on Rosetti in 2010. He was also long time injured, only two group stage matches in CL, then CL semi finals Bayern-Lyon and then World cup and retire. The same might happened to Kuipers - CL semi finals and then World Cup.

      Delete
    26. @Chefren Rosetti was directly appointed to CL semi finals. But I remember even "bigger surprise' cosidering CL final appointments. Lubos Michel was appointed to CL final in 2008 without a single knock out stage match in CL that season.

      Delete
    27. @CroRef: Lubos Michel in 2008 was a special case. He was injured at the beginning of that year (and having, amongst others, led to two Round of 16 appointments for Konrad Plautz who replaced him at MILAN - ARSENAL). After having recovered (but still before the start of the EURO tournament) he announced to retire later that year at the age of only 40. I think that this decision was the major reason for rewarding his long-term achievements with the UCL final.

      Delete
  4. More likely, Mateu Lahoz is a candidate for EL final. The only "problem" is Atletico Madrid... difficult to see this team eliminated before the final. In case, I would bet on the Spanish for the last act of Europa League.
CL final is simply impossible due to Barcelona and Real Madrid!

    1. Because Vincic has a domestic appointment on Friday afternoon. Who shall replace him as an AAR? Both Kajtazovic and Obrenovic are busy in Slovenia on Wed/Thu. A non-FIFA ref? Don't think so.

    2. Is this some kind of bombshell hint dropped by DrMr?? :D He gives us a fair deal of solid information most of the time... In case we see both in EL who will be the 2 names for CL? I'm struggling to find many more options :/

      Delete
    3. Why would you remove Jug from appointment on Tuesday and at the same time appoint him on Saturday domestically if he is to appear in EL on Thursday? It doesn't make any sense, as doesn't dropping Vincic from the international team.

    4. He just asked it in form of a question that why it is not possible... For god's sake, he isn't claiming that they are both definitely in EL... You're overreacting, my friend!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. What a mistake... unbelievable that this wasn‘t detected

    ReplyDelete

    1. The mistake is that the player who scored was not in an offside position from the teammate pass. So no matter if you think Milner deliberately played the ball or it’s a deflection it doesn’t matter because the attacker was onside on the first pass.

  25. Turpins game heating up. Roma players starts to protest about the decicions and Fazio is close to a second yellow. Strong verbal varning by Turpin only 2 minutes after his YC. After the halftime whistle Roma players was angry at Turpin.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Disallowed goal is a huge mistake, but for me lahoz and his assistant can't really be blamed. At full speed, so close decisions can be wrong. That has imho very less to nothing to do with training, personality, positioning etc. That's the human factor. This is why we need the VAR, despite all controversies for example here in my home country.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What is your home country? Italy?

      Delete
    2. The mistake is not that they thought Milner played deliberately or it was a deflection. The mistake is AR didn’t see the attacker was never even offside on the first pass from the teammate. That’s a huge mistake.

      Delete
  34. https://streamable.com/62yov
    The wrongly disallowed goal.
AAR1 maybe has more responsibility than Mateu, but Mateu had to ensure a certain visual control of the action, in order to cooperate. Mistake to be shared within all the involved officials.

    ReplyDelete
  35. There was also an AAR1 there. 6 eyes didn't see who touched the ball....

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, this is the question, I agree. At least one official had to keep an eye there.

      Delete
    2. More than a crucial mistake... At this level the entire team has to take the blame there... In the course of the match that is a very, very critical mistake... Collina won't be happy with Mateu!!

      Delete
    3. We can see that they had a quick consultation who played the ball? Or they were focused on the fact that GK was second to last defender.

      Delete
    4. They all saw who played the ball but evalueted it as deflection not deliberate play.
GK boxed the ball, defender didn't have time to react, the ball hits him and deflects to attacker.
      Thats my theory

      Delete
    5. Now I am confused: attacking player who scored the goal was not in the offside position at the moment of the initial first shot, so "deflection vs. deliberate play" is not relevant.
After that GK played the ball with his hands and then defender with his leg.
      Am I missing something?
      Soham/Chefren, please comment. Thanks.

    6. It doesn't matter if the player was in offside position when the initial shot occurred: the GK played the ball deliberately, and although Milner's touch is IMO undeliberate and is a rebound, the GK intervention invalidates the offside position afterwards.

It is a very difficult situation because there are many things to take into account (i.e. position at the initial shot, GK touch, deliberate or undeliberate touch by Milner, GK position, attacker position and last defender position) and that is what caused the mistake, IMO.

    7. You've indeed made a good point... Victor also points out something similar just above this... I think it will be better to wait till Ray (as usual, thanks Ray :D) manages some video for us and we check it properly before reaching any conclusion!! :)

    8. Chefren posted the video just above this thread!!

    9. To be fair I think the position is indeed marginally offside but I would assess that as deliberate play by Milner and hence will allow the goal anyway... That's my view!!

      Delete
    10. Plus as George points out earlier there's absolutely clear deliberate play by the goalkeeper as well so anyway the other things won't matter... The goal had to be allowed!!

  36. AAR1 in Rome awarded Roma a penalty. Took a few seconds before Turpin pointed to the spot. Penalty seemes correct

    ReplyDelete
  37. 56': big call in Rome by AAR1, penalty suggested to Turpin.
Clear foul in front of the net, but wrong card! It was not a genuine attempt to play the ball, so it should have been straight RC. Turpin issued YC.

    1. So another referee whose season is over? :(

      Delete
    2. I think Lahoz is over - one of the referees had to see that situation. But I think it is not over for Turpin yet, in case of good performance til the end, I think even EL finals could be an option for him.

      Delete
    3. Final in this season would be too much IMO... I want him develop further with more big games for a couple of more seasons and then final... An EL Semi-final would be a deserved appointment this time!!

And yes, Mateu completely knocked Man City out with that decision... It could've been so different if they went 2–0 up there before half time... The match got spoilt there!!

      Delete
    4. Not the best evening for Turpin, but at the same time overall not a so poor performance, just some weakness after some strong games in recent times. Luckily at the end, Roma managed this incredible outcome and now Barcelona is out.
The most significant mistake is missed RC in occasion of the penalty assigned to Roma.
In any case, Turpin's season in UEFA competitions can be over after today, but overall still a positive picture if you ask me.

      Delete
    5. Considering CL semi finals I think Brych and Cakir are sure. Assuming good performance on Thursday Kuipers should be third and I think Mažić should be the fourth name. I don't think Mažić will get CL finals, maybe EL final - there is no doubt that he deserved it but you never know with UEFA. And I don't think Committee cares to much if this is his last season - in the past they were aware of De Bleeckere, Bo Larsen, Stark and some other big names are retireing but they did not get CL final. Moreover, they knew Fernandez Borbalan is retireing at the end of the season and they did not gave him a single knock-out stage match in Champions League.

    6. Yes clear red card on Pique

      Delete
    7. Beside all of what you guys wrote, after Roma goal he also opted not to give Fazio his 2nd YC,so not the best night for both refs.

      Delete
    8. @referee 12 What do you think about Rocchi's chances for a CL SF??

In my opinion I would like to see Rocchi, Kuipers, Mazic and Cakir!!

      Delete
    9. Roma qualification is not a good news for Rocchi, also unexpected, if Juventus will make the same tomorrow... it is possible to have both semifinals with an Italian team.
However, I think, in case Rocchi could be appointed only in the first leg of the game without the Italian team.

      Delete
    10. Brych should not be in CL as his AR1 Borsch allowed 2 clear offside goals in the KO stage... That just can't get you a SF appointment unless other options are all unavailable... We have already seen him 3 times so it would be better to see him whistle an EL semi-final rather than in CL!!

      Delete
    11. I don't know what is going on with Rocchi. In all our discussions on referees for last matches (sf and finals) Rocchi is the only one who was appointed just once. Everybody else had two or three matches. So I guess EL semi finals for him.

      Delete
    12. @Soham: Brych is in a good form this season and it is easier to appoint other assistant than not to appoint Brych. But I don't even think UEFA considers thise tight offsides as such big mistakes that they would not appoint Brych to SF.

      Delete
    13. CroRef, there are certain matters which will be clear only after the SF appointments are out... Before that we can say nothing!!

      Delete
    14. Could Turpin be backed for not giving the red?
Maybe because of the position, that the forward could not shot on goal, or sth?

      Delete
    15. My view: I think both decisions would have been acceptable.

On the one hand, there are arguments really in favour of DOGSO: distance from the goal, positions of the other players, control of the ball...

On the other hand, one can consider that there were different times in this action:
-first, there was a clear pulling/holding of Piqué on Dzeko. An advantage was at that time successfully given by Buquet/Turpin.
-then, Piqué stopped pulling/holding his opponent and Dzeko kept the control of the ball, that's why I consider the advantage as successful.
-at last, he committed a foul with his feet, challenging his opponent from the ball, attempting to playing it. The yellow card is, for this last part, the appropriate sanction.

It's just, in my opinion, a matter of how you interpret the whole action, and especially whether you consider an advantage has been given.

At least I have some concerns about deeming this situation as a crystal clear mistake.

  41. Good Mateu Lahoz. He managed the game well, did everything allright... except one of the most important situations in the game. Yes, one of them had to see it. But reading some comments here it seems the performance was awful. It was not. Just one single mistake that truly affected the outcome of the match. A real shame.

That said, good offside call by AR2 to disallow another City goal.

    2. True, George. Personally, I love his unique style. I really enjoy watching Mateu Lahoz on the pitch. His calls were good/acceptable through the whole game, just this one huge mistake. However, he will surely pay for that...

    3. Performance was well but the only possible mark is 7,9! Lahoz, AR and AAR

    4. Indeed. For me, 7.9 (8.5 given how challenging was the first half). Second half was "easy" after Liverpool's first goal.

  42. Dear, who do you think will be the next referees to be promoted to the elite group this summer?
    My predictions:
    Manzano
    Vincic
    Gözübüyük

    1. Bastien, Gil Manzano and maybe Vincic!!

    3. And one Portuguese must also be promoted (Dias), Portugal now has a representative of the uefa committee.

    6. It will not be surprising if there were more than 5 promotions. This year many referees come out by age limit.

    7. Not necessarily all referees will quit... They can get extensions for more years subject to clearance of proper fitness tests!!

      Delete
    8. month ago there was a interview with our Slovak FA head of referees, in which he said that Kruzliak is going to be promoted to Elite group this year.

      Delete
    9. I think Kružliak deserve to get promote in the next season. The same goes to Soares Dias and Vinčić. Gil Manzano can be promoted in next season, when Rocchi is retiring. I want that Kulbakov get promoted, but its seem unlikely.

      Delete
    10. It seems sure that Fernandez Borbalan and Atkinson will leave FIFA list in June; maybe Eriksson and Kuipers too after the world cup.
I think Soares Dias is the 1st among who deserve promotion. Then probably Gil manzano (more for political reason due to Borbalan exit, because it seems early for him), then Bastien and why not Mazeika. It has been always regularly appointed and semi-high level.
Personally I don't see Kruzliak and Vincic.

      Delete
    11. Kuipers recently said in an interview that this will be his last final tournament and after that Dutch refereeing in major tournaments will be represented by Makkelie... But he wishes to continue to remain a FIFA referee for one or two more seasons as he finds it too much fun to stop now... He said he can continue for some more reasons as long as he's enjoying refereeing!!

    1. Not just 1 but 2 crucial mistakes.
      1.The offside
2.2nd YC to Firmino 55'-1 minute later Liverpool scored.
      Everything else is debatable.

      Delete
    2. 1. I think not 1 but there are 2 fouls to VanDijk
      2. Both yellow cards correct but Sane's more borderline to RC.
      3. No penalty, YC is too match imo, not a continous reaction, just an immediate reaction. But by the law of the game correct YC.
      4. Not satisfied with penalty appeal, it is more stimulation to me.
      5. Second time Sterling when he felt opponents hands are on him he tried to get penalty. He should be booked for stimulation.
      6. Crucial mistake.
      7. IMO it is a foul and YC, Mateu Lahoz thought it is not foul.

  44. World Cup chosen Ricardo Montero (Costa Rica) will be Ravshan Irmatov's 4th Official in tonight's CONCACAF Champions League semi-final 2nd Leg game between Club America (Mexico) vs Toronto FC (Canada). He will have his usual AR's Saidov and Rasulov. There game will be the played at the mythical, historic, and tough Estadio Azteca. Toronto goes into the match with a 3-1 lead after the 1st Leg.

    2. Watched the match last night, felt that Irmatov did a solid job overall.

Stymied the Club America mobbing dissent very quickly and early (something they'd done and used to their advantage in each of their earlier matches). Fairly consistent in his foul recognition, and good fitness to be in the right area at the right time most every time.

  45. I have read a very interesting opinion, that Karius' intervention being a deliberate save and Milner's touch being a deflection, we should make a still frame in the moment of the pass from a City player (see below). Of course, still no offside, but do you agree with such statement?

    1. I already said before I don’t think that’s deliberate play but I understand if some people think so. But to me it’s a reflex by Milner.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I agree. That's it.
On the long ball, all teammates from Manchester are onside, then there is a save by keeper, and a deflection by defender. It is always the same action, but never offside.
Surely a difficult situation, but a wrong management. The most likely explanation is that AR thought the last touch had been made by an attacker. Here, both referee and AAR1 couldn't help him.

      Delete
    3. Either way Mateu got the decision wrong and the decision lacked good teamwork... An Elite referee and his team are expected to solve these issues through cooperation... Otherwise it's of no use in having the AAR behind the goal lines!!

      Delete
    4. I thought this was obvious.

Once you determine Milner touched the ball and not an attacker, it's either

      A) a deliberate play, so there can be no offside OR
      B) a deflection/save, therefore you go back to the original snapshot in the link provided

I doesn't matter at all which determination you make here, because it simply cannot be offside.

      Delete
    5. To add and make abundantly clear... no matter what, you go back to that original snapshot. The attacker can only be offside at the moment his teammate last played or touched the ball. This is offside 101.
