RIP Soham

Today a very tragic and sad news reached us: our reader and friend Soham has passed away. Our thoughts are with him and his family.

We want to remember him: a very ardent man, with a more than strong passion for refereeing, we can't forget his help for the blog, especially during World Cup. A person with a big passion in his heart. We will remember him forever. May he rest in peace. Please, respect Soham's family privacy by not asking for any details.

  5. This comes to me as a very big shock! I’ve gotten to know him personally on social media and we’ve had very long and very passionate discussions about refereeing, but I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know him on a personal level. His unexpected passing away has deeply shocked me and I’m struggling to find words to express my grief.

  14. This is the last piece of news one would want to read here. I remember Soham as a passionate referee, always looking for updates and never scared to tell his honest opinion. I did not agree with him at times, but he was always willing to discuss and take the time to reply.
Furthermore he was one of the youngest and most collaborative on the blog. His final whiste came way too early :-(

May you rest in peace, dear Soham

I noticed that there were no new comments from him, but you never expect such a tragic reason for that. Shocking news.
I can hardly imagine this blog without Soham, there'll be a big hole without him.

  28. It's hard to believe that Soham is dead :(. We started talking during the World Cup and became friends, and now he’s gone and I don’t know what to say. He was only 20. His death came out of nowhere. I can’t imagine the shock and pain that his family must be going through... Soham left us way too early. I’ll miss him as a friend, and I know this blog will never be the same without his passion for refereeing. Rest In Peace, Soham.

  29. A sad news for us but, almost nothing compared to relative`s feelings(he will be again far from us).
No need for more info about it.
Look, I now nothing more than published, but WC is likely smth like a trigger.
At local time in India the last match starts at 11:30 pm and finishes at 1:30 am plus at least 2 hours commenting, that makes 3:30 am the earliest moment to sleep, if we add the added times and penalties, and more time commenting, it could be sleepless night. All that after 10 hours marathon with no enough time to recover and generalised is around 90% of the 32 days(let`s say 28/32). Simply said, massive health damage added to an old problem or two makes it deadly combination. Again, this is just a logic. Of course at such a national zones it is harder to keep it up with european or more suited zones, but try to find a way, don`t leave the health at the background.
    Rest in peace Soham.

    2. Only one thing is never fully responsible, it is full of links, but most general is surely leaving the health at the background.
      Anyway, thanks for the responce.

  33. This blog is much darker without his presence. Sometimes the world is not fair, he was taken way way too early, I am sure that seeing these comments would make him immensely happy. I really wish the best for those closest to him, during this hard time.

It was a pleasure, my friend.

    Rest In Peace, Soham.

  34. Where to begin,

Soham’s passion for refereeing is almost unrivaled. He could talk endlessly about any referee, especially Bjorn Kuipers. I will always have extremely positive memories of him and I will share some here.

The idea of the prediction game for the world cup was Soham’s. He knew refereeing so well that he could predict who the referee would be before they were announced. Soham's energy was contagious as the prediction game grew from 20 people to 120 people for the world cup final.

When Soham and I first got in contact about some help for scoring the prediction game, he searched for me on facebook. To confirm he had found me, he emailed me and asked, “Awesome, thanks! Do you have similar eyebrows like Marco Rodriguez? :D”. After I had accepted the request, he messaged me saying, “you have a resemblance with Chiquimarco”. I was truly amazed with how well versed be was with referees.

Working with him was a joy, and I enjoyed working with him as much as he enjoyed refereeing and analyzing referees. After about a week, we felt like best friends on an endeavor not knowing where we were going but enjoying the present. It will be impossible to replace Soham’s presence on our blogs and the website. He always appreciated everybody else’s thoughts and had meaningful responses, even if it was during a heated discussion with another reader. It is because of him that all of us better understand refereeing and have an increased passion for refereeing. In fact, I always hoped one day that he would find a spot in UEFA because his knowledge was immense.

Aside from studying refereeing, Soham pursued a honors degree in Chemistry. While I cannot imagine the struggles his family is facing now, I send them my prayers and best wishes during this incredibly challenging time. All of us are better people for having known Soham and we can’t thank him enough for his impact on us. I feel extremely fortunate to carry on something he started cared about so deeply. I hope he realizes how much we appreciate him and the many wonderful things people have wrote about him. May he rest in peace and may his memory forever be a blessing.

    Miss you forever!

    -Eric and Philipp
