  1. Del Cerro Grande is the first Category 1 referee appointed in League A (waiting for the next assignments, of course).
I think that a promotion for the Spanish to Elite will very likely follow on December... at the same time, I don't see Mateu Lahoz so much liked by committee as he was in past.

    1. Whilst I agree with the first part, I think it's too soon to say anything about the second. He got a normal/interesting game in UCL and is, at the moment, without an appointment in UNL... as are most of WC referees.

However, if CTA has any influence on the committee, then yes, he might have lost some status, as CTA clearly relies a lot in Gil Manzano and del Cerro Grande (far too much, IMO, even when there are mistakes) over Mateu Lahoz or Undiano Mallenco.

BTW, it looks like a difficult match for Rocchi, doesn't it?

      Delete
    2. Well, I still don't consider Del Cerro as a strong candidate to promotion in December since he's 42 and already 3 Spaniards in Elite Category. Even if, IMO, is a better referee than Gil Manzano and Mateu Lahoz.

Big match for him, hope he will have a good performance there.

PS: IMO, the appointment of a non-FIFA referee (Jaime Latre) as AAR of Del Cerro suggests that maybe at least another Spanish referee will handle a NL match in MD2.

      Delete
    3. That's also my "concern". However, if he is promoted with the idea of directly being a "top-Elite", then age is not that important with 2.5 seasons ahead of him. Otherwise, it is a too late move. Unfortunately, he reached his peak a bit too late!

      Delete
    4. And regarding the possible appointment of another spanish official, by looking at the ARs appointed with del Cerro, it can only be Hernández Hernández, Sánchez Martínez, de Burgos Bengoetxea (these more likely U-21 matches), Estrada Fernández or Mateu Lahoz.

    5. Quilava......I always read you carefully, I think you're competent ,especially on CTA. Can I disagree with your statement that Carlos is better than Jesus? Carlos and Jesus are two excellent referees, TOP, but I think Jesus is better than Carlos.

    6. I love Carlos, he has superlative elegance, technical and personality skills, too bad he's late for Nyon. I hope Rosetti gets him to do a couple of top seasons, he deserves it.

    7. Jesus, in addition to the same skills as Carlos, adds a stunning athletic performance . He's the referee of the future......waiting for the youngster from the Castellano-Manchego committee !!!!!!!!

    8. Of course you can disagree with me. I think this blog was created to discuss about refereeing! :D

I don't say Gil Manzano is a bad referee, but IMO is not having a good season start so far. CTA has over-exposed him in too important matches (Seville derby, Valencia-Atlético, Real Sociedad-Valencia...) with not very convincing performances, plus maybe having the most controversial refereeing so far in CL MD1 (Schalke 04-Porto).

Maybe I'm biased because Del Cerro's performance in 2016 Copa del Rey Final could be in the top 3 referee performances I've ever seen.

There's been a kind of "sociological" change of top referee profiles in Spain along with the change on physical requirements. Spanish top referees until late 00's like Mejuto González, Díaz Vega or Iturralde González were talented referees with very "unique" style in just a good physical shape. Now, the new generation of referees looks like a group of elite athletes that sometimes take the whistle. The epigone of that referee generation who knew the "muddy" pitches is the one of Undiano, Clos Gómez, Fernández Borbalán...

Iturralde González has complained in recent interviews that new referees, even if they're actually good referees, they look like "robots".

You can notice this also in the "other professional life" of referees. Until very few years, Spanish top referees had their own job. Velasco Carballo is (was) an engineer, Iturralde González is a dental technician, Daudén Ibáñez is a biologist, and Mejuto González is a Correos (national post service) ordinary worker, for example.

Now, every single referee dedicates full time to refereeing, and those who have worked previously, they've had jobs like physical education teacher (Mateu Lahoz), nutritionist and sports coach (Alberola Rojas) or policeman (Martínez Munuera). Also, Gil Manzano was regional champion of cross when he was a teenager.

    9. Football has changed, now it goes faster. Asking to increase athletic performance is an obligation on the part of CTA, even having a lean and muscular physique. If I look today at a game of Diaz Vega of '00 and then a game of Liga of last Sunday I see another football. In '00 Diaz Vega was very good in everything, excellent, but in that football !!! Today it is right that there are young referees who go fast and that to do so they must sacrifice themselves and train every day.But I don't think because they run a lot they can't whistle properly. I loved Diaz Vega's way of whistling and I love to see now young referee who make me passionate

  3. After a nearly consistent pattern between league and category on MD 1&2, it is now very mixed.
Rocchis's match is certainly a special case (although it could also have been a good test for e.g. del Cerro Grande or Kulbakov), but I don't really understand, why Letexier is appointed in a league above Bognar.
Maybe they want to avoid, that nearly every Elite referee needs to handle two NL matches this autumn and therefore decided to use First group referees in the top leagues as well.

    2. You're right, he was really impressive in Athens. But his players' management in CL and in domestic league are absolutely different - like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde...
I would recommend you to watch him in one of our domestic matches, so you'll be able to compare

  16. Easy-going game for Carlos in Chorzów. Verbal warning after Zieliński's tackle (12') and YC to André Silva for reckless kick in the head (37'). Very good job from both assistants (excellent offside calls in 11' and 23'). Portugal players were shouting for penalties three times but unfortunately replays were not shown...

    1. It got a bit hectic in the end when a Maltese player felt upstaged and made a really nasty tackle. Bognár was immediately on the scene and booked the player, but it didn't stop the altercation. Handed out two more cautions for that.

One thing I noticed, he seemed a bit too patronizing after his decisions. One scene I found strange was when a Kosov player was bodychecked by a Maltese defender, crashed into another Maltese and went down injured. When play stopped, the referee went over and basically told him to get up. If he doesn't give the foul, he should try to avoid such behaviour. But that was one very small issue. Solid.

  19. To be honest, there are many controversial situations in del Cerro Grande game and I'm not really convinced by his performance. The same for assistant referees...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Typical Spanish thing. Del Cerro Grande adds four minutes to the second half. Portugal make a substitution ~10 seconds before the basic time is over. Play is re-started in 90:45 while the referee points to his watch. He ends the game in 94:00...

Second half was worse than the first one from the Spaniard. He looked hectic and hesitant, no good rapport with players, sometimes just gesturing 'it's me who makes a call'. Lack of soft skills. On the other hand, outstanding level of fitness - always in move and no tiredness!

Four incidents where players shouted for a penalty but ZERO replays were shown. Incredible!

Portugals were convinced the ball crossed the line before Poland's second goal. In my opinion, it was still on the field of play. AR2 was very close and was looking at that.

  21. Not best Rocchi tonight. Penalty decision is supportable, but many inconsistencies in foul detection, some obvious missed, some non existent given. Also, even Serbian commentator said that sending off of Montenegrin coach was to harsh.

  22. I watched Daniel Stefanski in Israel Scotland where in my opinion he gave a correct penalty for Scotland but I have many doubts about the second yellow card for the Scotland player as I think its simulation by the Israel player as I don't think he makes contact with the face, tough one to call in real time though so I think you can support the referee.

    1. Agreed. It's a penalty you don't see given too often, but for me it was a clear shove, no intention to play the ball. I also agree that there was very little contact, so the 2nd YC - like the first one - was overly harsh IMO.

    2. Penalty: https://streamable.com/4nqh3
      Both Souttar's YCs: https://streamable.com/hsw0a

Penalty is fully correct, The referees were reminded to punish such pushes in the back.

Both Souttar's yellow cards are wrong, in my opinion. There is no studs contact in the first incident and there is no hand to face contact in the second incident (here, Stefański was not alert and therefore positioned himself too far away from the play + act of simulation was, let's say it, perfect)

About the rest - typical Stefański. Very lenient at the beginning, no prevention (warnings) at some incidents that were more than no-card but not enough for the starting YC, if you know what I mean. Then, fully correct YC for reckless use of arm, seconds before the penalty award. His nonchalant attitude as he has no interest in refereeing that game is something I really don't like. Too passive, as always.
