  1. Wow, once again Hategan is without a game. I'm really shocked because he didn't have a game in Nations League until now! I think he is the only Elite referee in this situation. I don't have an explanation for that.

    1. Imo the reason is the bad performance in CSKA Moscow - Real Madrid

      Delete
    2. Bad performance ? That's a joke, no ? Anyway, I'm preety sure that designations for this round of Nations League were made before MD2 in Champions League.

      Delete
    3. For sure, CSKA - Real in any case can't be the reason, otherwise Skomina would have been removed from Poland - Italy as well. It is indeed strange that Hategan is the only Elite referee without a single assignement in this competition.
I can only think that it is something still related to Northern Ireland - Switzerland... maybe he is still kept out from national teams games, I don't know.

  2. Igor Stojiljkovic replaced Nenad Djokic, wired to see now, maybe he is injured

From Italy - Tunisia friendly. What do you think?
In my opinion it is RC for SFP but difficult to spot for referee and it seems as he whistled the previous foul (holding).
For me RC for SFP because this tackle with both legs was very dangerous, and it is not so much important that player hit the ball maybe even before the opponent.

  5. Seems to have gone 'under the radar' here (also mine) but Petr Ardeleanu will be observed by Uilenberg in Riga, big appointment for the Czech.

    1. Maybe he can overtake Zelinka, who has not made much progress in the last two years and is only some months younger, as Czech number 2.

  6. Ardeleanu informed by his (A)AR1 awarded a penalty for handball.
At least supportable decision, if not correct for my taste.

  7. Yellow card at 25th second by Mads-Kristoffer Kristoffersen.RF by Slovenian

  8. Penalty for handball called by AR2 (not AAR2) in France - Germany, Mazic thanked him with a gesture. I think correct decision.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Are you sure?
I'm almost 100% sure that AAR said 'Penalty' (reading from lips)

      Delete
    2. Just to add, this is Igor Stojiljković first international match as AAR,and one very brave decision.

      Delete
    3. Maybe I was wrong, I had this perception.
In case it was Stojiljković, excellent start for him as AAR!
Now (26') a penalty appeal rejected by Mazic, absolutely correct, a YC for simulation to Mbappé was possible!

      Delete
    4. YC for mbappé would’ce ben harsh

      Delete
    5. YC for simulation would be harsh IMO.

About AAR2, he is probably just a replace for usual AAR Đokić (he is on youth tournament).
But who knows, Stojilković started very well

      Delete
    6. I saw replay now. Indeed, Stojiljkovic said "penal" (in Serbian penalty. So, very good decision. Very good first half for team Mazic.

      Delete
    7. No way this is a penalty!

      Delete
  9. Another penalty from Mazic. For me a mistake but diffucult to spot in real time. Matuidi rather steps on Hummels‘ foot and not a foul from the German. But anyway, why was there not a YC? For me a Dogso Situation with trying to play the ball.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. Difficult to spot live but it’s a mistake

      Delete
    2. Yes, attacker steps on the defender's foot, and defender's foot is there because he tackles on the opponent and didn't reach the ball. How's that a mistake?

      Delete
    3. Just to add something else:

Ok, imagine no penalty was whistled. What deciosion is easier to defend (support)?

      PK/No PK?

      Delete
    4. Of course PK. That‘s what I also thought when I saw it live. But with the benefit of replay it‘s clear for me that PK is the wrong decision

      Delete
    5. In my opinion the replay shows that it is a wrong decision - no penalty, but impossible to spot live. For the course of the action and how it happened, you will whistle always penalty there, impossible to make the correct assessment.

      Delete
    6. IMO first decision was a mistake. No way you can give a penalty there! His arm was in a natural position from close range. What was he supposed to do? Second pen hard one to call but supportable decision i think.

      Delete
    7. Natural position? Hm...
Defender is catching signal for radio with his right arm, probably?
In that case it's natural :)

      Delete
    8. Don't get me wrong but how can one arm be on the grass and the other one is in the air?
And guess what, that arm is closer to the ball

      Delete
    9. Have you played football before? One arm on the ground is always used for support which is on the grass. The other arm will always naturally come up to support balance and will always be higher with respect to your body and the ground especially when sliding sideways. If you watch football, you will see this sort of coordination of the arms is very typical.

      Delete
    10. This is very similar to players jumping up to head the ball. You will always see them using their arms/elbows for balance.

  11. Ardeleanu showed a good refereeing in Latvia - Georgia.
High level of alertness, good soft skills and prevention. Only YC given was correct. Missed two YCs for studs-tackles at 31' (where I agree with him it would have inflamed the match rather than calmed it) and 50'ish (missed on a perception level).
Penalty given was (at least) supportable by AR1/AAR1, for handling.
Mr Uilenberg should be contented with what he saw in this amicable match by the Czech team.

Maybe he could make an EL debut this season?

    1. Thank you for this report, I think indeed that it is possible to see Ardeleanu already in EL group stage this season.
I want to add that I was never convinced by Zelinka, so maybe this time it will go better for Czech refereeing with Ardeleanu.

      Delete
    2. Thank you, I was kinda surprised this match ended with only one caution, but good to know it wasn't due to (too many) mistakes by the referee. Ardeleanu is certainly an interesting candidate for the future.

  14. I’m in agreement with the opinions above on both penalty kicks awards by Mazic yesterday. Handball is for me not clearly intentional but an offense. I was surprised by the decision because of Mazic‘ small and short sound of his whistle. It seemed like a corner kick award. The penalty for France is a clear mistake. Mazic had an unblocked view, but like Nicola Rizzoli in Netherlands-Spain 2014 World Cup (similar scenario in my opinion) in high dynamic it must look like a contact where the defender is at fault.
But what it shows also is: Yesterday I read comments from Vlad and others, a bit nostalgic, but of course they had a good argument: Refereeing changes with VAR, referees don’t like to be corrected, motivation can suffer. I think the latter only happens if referees don’t accept they can make mistakes. If you are aware you are a human being, if you are humble, then you can easily go into a game and be open for VAR. Because referees must serve the game, players and supporters, I rather want a demotivated referee nonetheless excellently doing his job than teams and supporters suffering from clear mistakes. If you take Strömbergsson case (I have not seen it, but can read from comments it was blatant), if you take Mazic… referees need to be supported by VAR, football can‘t afford to go on accepting clear mistakes (even if human and understandable). The game is so quick and complex nowadays. Everything else is nostalgy in my thinking, which is nice, but doesn’t help football and the referees.

    1. You can see in both Mazics game, one in World Cup and yesterdays one, both penaltys were 100% correct by watching it live but then you look on replay and its no penalty. Good to see VAR there, soon in UEFA league too..

Italian Daniele Doveri (UEFA 2nd Group) has been appointed to the Thessaloniki derby between Aris and Paok on Sunday. His assistants are Alberto Tegoni and Giorgio Peretti. FO is (soon to be FIFA) Emmanouil Skoulas and ref. observer Fernandez Marin.

Edward, this is shocking... believe me... where are the Greek officials?
BTW Tegoni and Peretti are surely among the new FIFA assistant referees for 2019 and this will be a very good test for them!
I also think that it is the first time ever for Italian referees in Greece, but I can't be sure about that.

    2. Excellent question, Chefren.

When Melo Pereira came last year to take over as Head of referees he said that he would resign if he was forced to appoint foreign referees. The reason, according to him, was that he would show lack of trust to Greek referees. And after only 10 months he appointed Borbalan for the Cup final (1st time after 43 years). And he didn't resign.

This season he removed 10 referees and 19 AR's from the previous SL list. So, he took full responsibility for his choices. He promoted 9 referees and most of them were quite inexperienced. I will mention only 2 names that made quite a mess the last matchday. Tasis and Lamprou. They both were promoted this summer with only 4-5 matches on FL (2nd tier).

The most shocking thing is that the ref committee (Pereira, Marin, Lindberg) plus the 2 Greek members and Tritsonis as Head of education (?) cost to HFF 60.000 euros per month. The result? NONE.

Referees live under constant fear. They know that if certain teams don't like them, they would be out of the list. And that fear leads them to big mistakes.

Unfortunately, I don't see any way out. I am really worried.

  17. Very challenging game for Martin Strömbergsson in Yerevan.

    Videos
    Missed Penalty (https://streamable.com/jv1g7)
    Disciplinary Control (https://streamable.com/aoj55)

=> Strömbergsson never found the 'pulse' of this match.
We should say that players made it VERY difficult to officiate this match, always simulating since the first minutes, making assessment of duels a big challenge. Actually, his foul recognition/detection was adequate or even good.
He tried to whistle a lot in order to calm the game (good tactic) but used this poorly. He failed to call some 'smart' fouls, and selected poor moments in order to 'kill' the game. This lead to a foul selection that was neither predictable nor coherent with the match.

=> As you can see from the at-length montage of his disciplinary control (https://streamable.com/aoj55), to be honest I would even so far as to call it defective.
The first card came too late, and the rest was honestly a big mess.
EXTREME leniency to only have the one RC, surely some perception errors as well as keeping eyes closed, I'll leave it for everyone else to decide just how many missing send offs there were...

=> What is most worrying (also beyond this match, see below) is that Strömbergsson didn't seem at all ready to lead this match. Perhaps having such a long injury meant that he wasn't 'in-form', but Swedish was far away from the level needed to handle a match like this, below is the biggest moment where he 'lost' this game:
    * At 13' (0:35), it was a prime moment to 'take charge' of this match in it's formative moments. A caution (perhaps more...) and firm warning à la his compatriot Eriksson would have been the best solution on the pitch.
Referee left a weak impression, and didn't even show a YC.

Martin Strömbergsson didn't make a good recommendation for (a return to) higher tasks in this match. His performance was really disappointing, and his mark surely won't be far away from 6,9.
I am sorry for the Swedish because without his injury, he was on a good path to become an Elite referee, but now, this seems not to be the case. Especially without Eriksson, this could have been 'his' time.
My feeling is that the past few days have been good for Andreas Ekberg (did anyone watch his performance in ISL-SUI? Jonas?), probably one could look to him as the next Swedish top class referee.
I wonder how UEFA will treat Strömbergsson after this match, interesting time for Swedish refereeing in any case.

    1. After having watched the video, I must say that my first thought is "this game would have been difficult for all referees".
The behavior of players is for sure disgraceful and against the fair play. This should be taken into account as first consideration. Then, in this context, for sure Strombergsson was weak. Despite of a very good foul detection, he failed in assessing all the incidents properly under the disciplinary point of view. We can mention the blatant missed YC in 10', that is more than clear. I really can't understand why he didn't book the player. This was something like a "key mistake", because with a YC issued, an early signal would have been given. Then, without listing all the other incidents, I think that two straight RC should have been shown. Assessing the performance this means two crucial mistakes. The missed penalty is another bad signal for the Swedish crew: I think that AAR1 Pandzic should have helped referee there. At a certain point of the video, in second half, I had the impression that all players felt free in doing wat they wanted to do without any authority on the pitch. This is a very bad signal.
My final consideration is therefore the following: game would have been difficult for all referees there, as stated before, but Strombergsson contributed to a very poor show. He should have shown more cards, he didn't read the game properly.
I would have preferred to see this game ended for missing the legal number of players, than to see how it ended with only one RC for second YC. This was a very weak performance and I think we wont see again the Swedish until December.

      Delete
    2. Watched the game and the highlights now: What a disgraceful match. I've lost count how many YCs and RCs could have been issued, numerous brutal fouls, a ton of player altercations, dissent etc. The penalty is a huge mistake by the referee team about the rest it is nearly impossible to say if in such a match you can blame them for missing cards. It was a nasty and very difficult game and unfortunately, the Swedish wasn't able to prevent it.

      Delete
  18. Beaton had quite a difficult game in Norway, Bulgaria's player committed half as dozen nasty fouls he properly punished with YCs. Also quite a lot of player management to be done due to Norway's players getting incensed by their opponents style of play. Good performance though.
