  1. So I was wrong with Mateu Lahoz. Still "normal appointments" for him.
Interesting to see Brych in Croatia - England with Fritz confirmed as AAR1. Stieler with a committee member...
Stieler and Banti, who missed an appointment in European cups MD1 and MD2, both got a game in Nations League.

  2. Christopher Kavanagh can probably expect to be entered into the FIFA list for 2019, with his debut (?) as AAR.

  3. Dingert's first AAR appointment since March 2015 (if I didn't miss anything). Probably there are at least two more German teams appointed and therefore they needed "everyone". That could also explain Dankert missing with Brych, because he is needed as AAR elsewhere (or referees himself). If e.g. Siebert and Welz get matches, it is already difficult to find AARs from the FIFA list.

Today I watched Michael Oliver in Porto - Galatasaray.
A small report and some videos of key-incidents about the performance of the English.

It was not an easy game for Oliver in Oporto. Both teams committed many fouls and they were more focused on that than on playing football. All six YCs issued were reasonable choices. In first half, a YC was for sure missed in 20'. In second half, a penalty appeal occurred in 59'. Regarding this incident, I can't be sure that Oliver had an exact perception of what had happened, at least looking at him in the video.
Both assistant referees were quite busy. AR1 was better than AR2. The latter raised the flag in some situations in which, in my opinion, with more courage, he could have let the game flow. One situation was a sure mistake, other situations were very borderline. However, he got some decisions right and the game was challenging.

    20': missed (at least YC)
    https://streamable.com/uw6la
In my opinion, this was a dark YC. Knee hitting the opponent on the back with a certain force. It wasn't, as the commentator says in the video, the first time that player from Galatasaray had committed a similar foul in the game. Later on, before the end of first half, Oliver booked him for a "normal" foul that could have been managed without card, but of course this decision, fully justified, was taken also for "persisent infringment". In any case, I consider this missed YC in 20' as clear mistake.

59': live sequence and replays (replays were shown later in the game)
    https://streamable.com/bdxtg

In my opinion, supportable decision to play on, but, as I stated above, I'm not sure that the English saw this possible foul. Myba AAR1 was in a better condition to make a judgment despite of the fact that it happened on the other side of penalty area. I said "supportable" because the holding doesn't seem to have clear effects on the attacker, but penalty for sure could have been whistled.

73': Possible YC to Nagatomo (Galatsaray), if you consider this raised leg hitting the opponent as reckless challenge.

If you back Oliver for the penalty appeal, then it is 8.3 in my opinion, missed YC stays as significant mistake but only 0.1, as we know from UEFA guidelines. In any case, if you apply in a very strict way the LOTG you can even issue a straight RC for that challenge (no reasion for hitting opponent on the back with knee), but I wouldn't be so harsh.

    List of assistant referees decisions:
    3' Good ONSIDE AR2
19' Wrong call AR2 but not easy. Player was ONSIDE.
    25' AR1 correct offside
    34' Excellent ONSIDE AR1
    38' Good ONSIDE AR2
51' and 51' (*2 in the same minute) 2 offside calls by AR1, excellent.
52' correct and very tight offside call AR2
68' Offside Call AR2 Wrong maybe ONSIDE better to stay down.
    84' Excellent ONSIDE AR2
    90' Excellent ONSIDE AR2
90'+1 AR2 with a borderline offside call, maybe ONSIDE, but many doubts.
    90'+2 correct offside AR1

AAR1 with a possible involvment in penalty appeal, AAR2 expected level, FO expected level.

  7. In Belgium Bart Vertenten has been arrested due to match fixing. In two degradation matches he accorded twice a penalty. One of them for a fault far outside the backarea. A football agent and members of KV Mechelen are accused too. Sebastien Delferiere is free but also accused. His report according an excluded player was falsified. Møre, together with a football manager he bought a car at lower price. Finally he received money from that manager for his sport school. In Belgium we think it’s the end for both.

  10. Apparently, NIR goalie was booked for picking up a back pass. You don't see that everyday.

    1. This would be a clear mistake: YC is not needed in this situation, only indirect free kick must be whistled.

    2. The whole management of the situation wasn't really fine by Kabakov. According to my opinion, he needed way too long to come to the spot. Instead of a sprint he jogged only. The consequence was the NIR goalkeeper kept the ball in his hands, the AUT attackers tried to get the ball out of his hands, a quick free-kick wasn't possible anymore. I think this was the reason for the YC (delaying the restart of the game) - anyway, it would be evitable with a more active approach by the referee.

Otherwise a quite good performance in a very easy game so far (80').

    3. You can book a keep if he picks the ball on purpose (like to avoid a forward to play the ball), but I didn't watch the sequence so I can't pronounce myself on this situation

    4. Watched it now - my previous information was the UEFA web page - and it seems like it was indeed for keeping the ball and delaying the restart.

@Gitzlo: Any idea what the YC for Norwood was for? Dissent?

    5. Unfortunately no, I didn't recognize the YC during the game tbh :)

  11. Mateu Lahoz behaves like he always does. You can like it or you can not. The most important thing: Almost nothing to report.

  12. Quite an easy game for Brych in Croatia England. Two possible situations in the second half which I would like a look at again though.
    England Penalty Appeal 52'
    Possible SFP 59'
Other than that all cautions were correct and fully justified

    1. I agree, good performance by Brych.
My feeling is this match wasn't as easy as it looked, also regarding the full concentration.
Brych had 'his finger on the pulse' of the match from first whistle to last, roadblock YC to Henderson was good; with a more passive referee, this game could have become challenging, IMO.

If you're talking about Barkley's penalty appeal, then both decisions are correct for my taste (still with SFP in sight though).

  13. Good performance by Stieler on a challenging match. All his cautions (8) were correct and his match control was very good. He was respected by players and had small talk in some moments.

His style (gestures, card showing) reminds a lot of Brych. It's quite different from everything I have seen so far. But it seems that it's working.

Good offside calls by both AR's. I would highlight the very good co-operation with AR1 at min. 22' when Tsimikas (GRE) was cautioned for a foul away from the ball.

  14. Thank to Arbitro Internacional:
Wilton Sampaio (BRA) - Rodrigo Correa (BRA) and Bruno Boschilia (BRA) will be the CONMEBOL trio at 2018 Club World Cup. Mauro Vigliano (ARG) will work as VAR.
What are your predictions for the other confederations and especially UEFA?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Márk Szántó and Edward, you have totally different ideas about Stieler, well, the only solution for me would be to watch the game. maybe I will do that, I'm curious about his performance :)
