Gözübüyük with his CL debut.
ReplyDeleteTurpin and Kabakov back.
Stieler with a very important game in Milan, nice to see Grinfeld again and I hope that Bastien can definitely recover after a poor period. The game in Serbia for sure wont be easy.
Collum always with a certain kind of appointments, he never makes this expected big step.
For Collum it probably is the first match ever with VAR. Therefore sensible not to give him a bigger match, I think.
DeleteYou are right, good remark. However for sure we can expect more from Collum, an Elite referee with a so long experience... but always in the background.
DeleteI dont know why some people underestimate some matches. Every game is for 3 points and every club in the competition deserves equal treatment.
DeleteIf we, even at this level, make distinction between "small" and "big" games, it would be really unfair.
For me "big" games are decisive games, regardless of teams that play, and of course the knockout part of the tournament as it goes further, it is expected to make a selection of the best referees.
In group stage I dont see any reason why ANY elite referee wouldnt be appointed for ANY game.
Interesting to note that Collum has english VAR's.
DeleteWell, I just realized that Bastien is appointed again with Olympiacos, after the controversial game in EL on last group stage... particular choice by committee, I think it could have been avoided.
ReplyDeletei completely agree. Bastien was out of assignments for 6 months after Olumpiakos-Milan game last year. I also disagree by giving Kabakov as his debut match Real Madrid. He should have started with a game not involving the top 3-4 clubs in Europe.
DeleteIt is not the debut for Kabakov, he officiated Valencia - Manchester United one year ago on MD6.
DeleteNo appointment for Anthony Taylor in UCL then....since Stuart attwell has been appointed to for column....maybe Uel for him....
ReplyDeleteOliver with a good performance in Match day 1 maybe UCL for him tomorrow with his team pawson...
Taylor was appointed on MD1. The next set of appointments for the same referee is MD3 or MD4.
DeleteIn all group stage a referee basically gets three games: the first one in MD1 or MD2, second in MD3 or MD4, third in MD5 or MD6. Apart from extra-ordinary cases, of course.
This is how committee works by years but maybe you didn't know that.
I don't think that refers to likes of cakir, kuipers, skomina and brych......because these set of referees get almost all round of the UCL...
DeleteNo, they normally also get only 3 matches in group stage.
DeleteSo, Skomina for Barcelona-Internazionale?
ReplyDeleteOT but I have to report that Skomina is very active these days in Slovenia in a nationwide charity action of collecting funds for a small boy with spinal muscular atrophy who needs an urgent treatment abroad. Just wanted to say - not only a great referee, but also a great man. And that counts even more.
DeleteWould be logical, because some other big names (dCG, Mateu, Orsato) are not available for that match.
DeleteThank you very much for your special effort in reporting this big game. If I may say so, I hope your contributions to the blog become more again frequented in the future :)
ReplyDeleteDo you know how Ali Palabıyık performed in Trabzon today?
@Mikael W. I would like to give general information about Ali Palabıyık.
ReplyDeletePalabiyik Ali is one of Turkey's most scandalous referee. The Turkish public thinks it's malicious. He was repeatedly sentenced by the Turkish Central Referee Committee (MHK). But nothing has changed. No team in Turkey does not want him. In particular, the management of last year's Fenerbahce-Galatasaray match was beyond the scandal. He directed a disgraceful match without even listening to the VAR referees. He finally got banned until the end of the season. If the Turkish Central Referee Committee (MHK) had not been changed, his arbitration career would have ended. Everyone wanted it to end.
In the near future, we don't think that other Turkish referees will be successful in international arena except Zorbay Küçük, who is UEFA's project referee.
I haven't seen many matches of him in Turkey, but I was a little surprised on seeing him promoted after his sonorous technical mistake in 2017 U19 Euro.
Delete@Quilava;
DeleteTurkish Central Referee Committees (MHK) are constantly changing. (This year has changed three times so far)(Current chairman (Zekeriya Alp) is not even referees, former football player. Also commercial partner of Fenerbahce president, as a joke, but true).
Each committee has its own referees. The committee close to Ali Palabıyık may have proposed to UEFA. If you're not close to these committees, you can't be a referee here.
Cüneyt Çakır has a special case. Because his father is a former referee and strong. So the committees couldn't touch him. Now, he doesn't need protection. He's loved and respected in here. But the job of other referee is very difficult.
Felix Zwayer replaced Sascha Stegemann as AVAR between Atalanta - Donezk .
ReplyDeleteThis awful decision was made in the Premier League game between Manchester United v Arsenal.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/94wmj
Probably one of the worst offside calls I've seen in awhile. Arsenal must be thankful that the referee Kevin Friend delayed the whistle until the ball was in the net so VAR was able to give the goal.
I agree with you 100%!!!!!!!
Deleteit is unacceptable!!!(((((((((((((((((((
Kevin Friend saved an assistant!!!
Definitely the best ref in Turkey is Firat Aydinus, of course after Cakir.

Is this punishable handball or not?
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/29j2m
Awarded in the last minute by Jacob Kehlet in Horsens-Esbjerg in Danish Superliga.
I would say no handball, because of:
Delete"when a player falls and the hand/arm is between the body and the ground to support the body, but not extended laterally or vertically away from the body"
from the angle behind the goalpost, it is very clear that his hand is far out of his body even if it is touching the ground, so according to the new law it is publishable
DeleteThere isn't any new law regarding deliberate handball by defender, only for attackers in case of goal scored.
Deleteit's not a new law, it's a clarification of the handball law, but the point is that at this case although the hand is touching the floor, it is extented away from the body
DeleteOK, can be discussed, whether the arm is extended ("laterally or vertically") away enough. So probably grey area / a matter of interpretation.
DeletePenalty execution allowed by Alexandru Tean in Atalanta - Shakhtar Youth League:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/zdhkq
Probably #8 is slightly inside the penalty area, but hard to see.
DeleteThe rest is legal, I think.
Whether he crossed the line is difficult to see, but he is clearly within 9m15 as he clearly crossed the arch line.
DeleteClear YC forgiven by Kabakov.
ReplyDelete3' SPA,shirt pulling.
9' in Madrid: disallowed goal by AR2. Good application of VAR protocol, delayed flag. I think goal can be regular.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, correction for AR2: no offside, 0-1.
Delete15': penalty whistled by Stieler, I can hardly see a contact there, VAR confirmed. I'm not sure. This looked very controversial, but again, like it happened in Napoli - Liverpool, German VAR don't intervene.
ReplyDeleteThe defender that got booked for the foul did not complain too much. No proof, but definitely a hint that there was a contact.
DeleteThis penalty is s joke. There is no contact whatsoever. It is very obvious that Stieler has lot of problems with penalty decisions. I can't forget when he whistled penalty in Crvena zvezda-Krasnodar for the Russian squad - it was foul from the Russian player, not for him. That penalty could cost Red Star it's future. Fortunately home side then passed through. In Bergamo at least this penalty was missed.
DeleteNow a clear replay with zoom was shown: very small touch on the tip of the shoe, but in my opinion without any effect on the subsequent fall by attacker. However, this was enough to support the call. In Italy penalties like these are perceived as simulation by attacker.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI must say if VAR will be used always with these guidelines, attackers will look for very easy penalties. The concept of clear and evident mistake is a real problem, I think that German VAR go for black or white: they intervene only in case of 100% clear NO CONTACT. Let's see whether this will be the same in other games with different VARs.
DeleteI think, that both is supportable. The defender doesn't complain, because he cleary tried to touch the striker (he wanted to).
DeleteVideo Scene : https://streamable.com/1vibg
DeleteHas anyone seen the onside of Ramos? Every replay I saw looked like clear offside.
ReplyDeleteAnother crucial mistake by AR2 who had disallowed 1-2 scored by Real.
ReplyDeleteHowever also in this case very difficult situation, from the replay it looked offside.
The angle of the replay is really misleading. Such offside decisions need 3D line to judge.
DeleteNo offside as per VAR.
ReplyDeleteCorrect second YC by Kabakov
ReplyDeleteI didn't take notes on the Atalanta - Shakhtar Donetsk game, but here are some short impressions on Tobias Stieler.
ReplyDelete- Not predictable foul detection, he was even close to losing control in the 1H thanks to that
+ Missed caution for heavy tackle at 6', but besides good disciplinary control where he sorted out eight cautions
+ Correct penalty as Marvin Becker's clip (19:57) shows
+ Stieler is an excellent psychologist: his mimics / gestures, talks were very good
=> Overall good impression, Stieler is Elite material IMO
Thank you for the notes!
DeleteBy reading that you think that Stieler is an excellent psychologist, I was remembered that he studied psychology adter becoming jurist.
Just on Stieler, I went and had a look at his cautions. Just personally I don't like the way he shows the yellow card. He gets really close to the player, almost in their faces when he shows the caution.
DeleteBayern asked for a possible foul before 0-1 by Tottenham.
ReplyDeleteNo foul IMO.

DeleteVideo Scene
Bit surprising, that Bastien is wearing yellow like Olympiakos' goalkeeper. The pink kit could be well distinguished from the white/red kit of Red Star, I think.
ReplyDeleteHandball missed by Gozubuyuk. Should have been a penalty for Manchester.
ReplyDelete5 min ago. Deliberate movement of the arm towards the ball. Unnatural position of the arm and the ball is coming from a long distance.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/mpgwl
DeletePenalty for me. Easy to miss and only visible in the 4th replay. But once VAR checks it, he should detect it.
DeleteTo be honest this should be also a VAR mistake because all people can expect an intervention here. Gozubuyuk can be justified, even several replays are not enough and we must wait the last wait to see the touch, but then why no OFR?
Delete100% clear penalty and i Italy this would be unacceptable mistake by VAR.
I think the referee could see this handball himself. His position was good, open angle and the arm is clearly outstretched.
DeleteInteresting first half for Marciniak in Istanbul. Quite tense match in a hot atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteDuring the first 20 minutes he tried to let the game flow, by whistling only big fouls, and after an early YC to Icardi.
After the minute 20, the fouls being more and more numerous, he began whistling every contact.
I thought it was a very good first half, and Marciniak had the intelligence to adapt his line seeing the match changing.
Very solid game in Istanbul.
DeleteVery solid indeed. We can see the "old" Marciniak again. Confidence, strong and good decisions with control.
Delete2nd YC by Bastien. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the 1st one was absolutely correct if not mandatory, and the second one is supportable at the very least. So good decision IMHO.
DeleteBoth YC's are correct, IMO.
DeleteTo harsh YC IMO
DeleteIMO the second YC is wrong. Too harsh, normal fault
DeleteAbsolutely correct PK for Tottenham by Turpin.
ReplyDeleteNow correct play on for me, contact was not big enough is my taste
DeleteAgree. And simulation + YC would have been wrong too because of the contact. Play on was the best solution here.
DeleteGozubuyuk with some difficulties. He has issues with player management and foul distinction. Many (small) fouls missed and because of that the temperature went up in the game unnecessary. YC for City coach was too strong. Verbal warning would have been a better solution. His performance tonight was not bad, but also not good. Not convincing in a normal match.
ReplyDeleteVery brave, calm and assertive performance IMO, letting game flow and allowing strong tackles. (reminded me a little of Rocchi and Taylor)
DeleteDifficult job for observer though, some tough situations and 2 possible PK for City, as well as 2 free kicks in dangerous positions for Dinamo. I think he should get positive grade in the end, its not easy to officiate at this level and he showed a talent and commitment in his debut.
I have a different opinion, but it's good to have different opinions. He is too light for this level. His face was stressed and he creates problems in a easy match. My mark will be 8.1/8.2 for him.
DeleteMasterclass Marciniak tonight. Flawless foul detection, remarkable management, 4 correct YC.
ReplyDeleteI hope the old Marciniak is definitely back !
+ 1 correct YC for Paris coach.
DeleteIf old Marciniak is finally back, I can be only happy for that.
DeleteI totally agree with you Chefren.
DeleteIt wasn't a hard match for the referee.
DeleteBut I don't understand, why did the PSG footballers and technical team object to every whistle during the match?
I think they're doing it to put pressure on the referees.
But they don't need it.
Total market value of PSG: 1,05 bil. €
Total market value of GALA: 136,30 mil. €
That's not good tactics for PSG.
What do you think about this positions?
Delete1. RC? https://twitter.com/erman87715532/status/1179110958217728000
2. OFFSIDE?(before goal)
https://twitter.com/erman87715532/status/1179171749126115328
Unconvincing Bastien tonight in a normal match.
ReplyDelete-Questionable 2nd YC for Olympiacos in 58'
What about column performance tonight with attwell in var...guys...
ReplyDeleteI miss the game...
Very lenient ("British") style leading to some missed fouls and a missed YC for a reckless tackle (28'). But no bigger problems, overall expected level, I would say.
DeleteVAR was only visible in a check after the second goal, where the reasons for their doubts were not so clear. Goal then was correctly confirmed
Reason for the VAR check was a potential offside in the build-up.
DeleteAtalanta v Shakhtar Donetsk - Penalty to Atalanta confirmed by VAR.
ReplyDeleteWas there contact? Yellow card given to Kryvtsov.
https://streamable.com/t2ai5
Real Madrid v Club Brugge - Red card to Brugge captain Vormer.
IMO two correct yellow cards shown by Kabakov.
https://streamable.com/2s6km
https://streamable.com/9k8lr
Crvena zvezda v Olympiacos - Red card to Benzia
I don't think the second yellow card is quite at the level of reckless and I would prefer to see a final warning or use of the captain there.
https://streamable.com/jdmxz
https://streamable.com/cnk1r
Tottenham Hotspur v Bayern Munich - Penalty for Spurs.
Correct decision by Clement Turpin to give a penalty. However, I think a caution needed to be shown because of the Bayern players mobbing the referee. The coaching I've received is quite clear on this, when surrounded by 3 or more players from the same team, at least 1 player must be cautioned for dissent. Also take note of the way the goalkeeper sprinted directly at the referee.
https://streamable.com/wwwo8
To be honest, in my opinion second YC by Bastien is totally wrong.
Delete@first video: I wonder, whether it is a UEFA instruction to show the YC only after the VAR confirmation - or just common sense.
DeleteA very strange decision by Bastien. It seems that he decided to show YC only when he realized that she would be second.
DeleteRewatching the video, possible explanation would be that this YC was given for another reason, otherwise, I don't find arguments.
DeleteNo reckless, no SPA, normal foul...
Wow nice watching Turpin in action yesterday.... I don't know he was that brilliant
ReplyDeleteWhat about Grinfeld's performance?
ReplyDelete
