  1. Jarred Gillet (Australia) is VAR for Paul Tierney according to UEFA. I thought Jarred had to lose his FIFA badge when he left Australia.

    1. He did. He no longer has his FIFA badge but is probably one of the most experienced in the use of VAR in the world having been part of the initial experimentation when Australia became one of the very first leagues in the World to use VAR.
Big show of trust by UEFA to use him.

      Delete
    2. Am I correct if England select him. He can't referee England or Australian teams

      Delete
    3. Is there any way to find out how many games Gillett has actually acted as VAR for PGMOL? I know he got internally suspended from the role after they rejected an intervention by him in an Arsenal vs Crystal Palace match in 19/20, but not sure for how long.

He has definitely stood as VAR this season though, correctly allowing Burnley's goal against Brighton in the first round of matches.

    4. He's done 3 this season. VAR 3. 4th 2 OFR 0

    5. Thanks, David. Do you know about 19/20 and 20/21?

      Delete
    6. An internal suspension because of one single wrong intervention 2 seasons ago? Is that soooo relevant to bring up in relation to this appointment?

      Delete
    7. No details on previous seasons. Sorry

      Delete
    8. I don't know if that is 100% correct but it should be like that:
      19/20: VAR 8 PL, 1 FA Cup
      20/21: VAR 15 PL, 2 FA Cup

    9. Thanks, Dominik! (btw I replied to your question now on the last page :)). Did you use a site for that record or do you keep one personally? I use football-lineups for that sort of thing but never found a good site for a database of VAR appointments.

So, to reply to Known - no, in my eyes it is not important really at all. But I recalled that PGMOL sh*t the bed after this game, and while the whole project was a disaster, they didn't appoint him as VAR for the whole rest of that season after this(!). Ridiculous.

But Dominik's data shows that last season they appointed him regularly as a VMO so my fear that he'd only worked a small number of games in the role (because of this suspension, hence why I brought it up) was misplaced.

    10. Yeah keeping track of VAR appointments is indeed quite difficult...

The only website that kind of works for that is transfermarkt.com/de. They do keep track of some VAR appointments. It's quite random though which matches are included for some reason. So definitely not the most reliable source but I guess better than nothing :D
For example here is Gillett's page: https://www.transfermarkt.com/jarred-gillett/profil/schiedsrichter/4929/plus/0?funktion=6&saison_id=2019&wettbewerb_id=
You can filter through the seasons and Referee/VAR appointments.

I just went with what they had in there for the 19/20 season as it seemed quite balanced and included pretty much all matchdays but who knows really... Could be way off.
For the 20/21 one, I went through all PL appointments as there was pretty much nothing on transfermarkt and just searched via CRTL+F :D Yup, took 10 minutes but I was really curious :D

Btw I don't know much about the Arsenal v. Crystal Palace match but it doesn't seem like he was suspended after that. He was VAR the next matchday and was appointed as VAR for the rest of the season but I really don't know.

I was thinking about keeping a personal database for VAR for a while now, I think I'm gonna do it now for this season and onwards.

    11. Slightly off topic but could Gillett actually go on FIFA list in January - normally have to be second January after debut in top division but not if renominated. England ‘finally’ have enough refs to fill their 10 slots without him after an embarrassing period of drought (could Gillett be an 11th as an UEFA exception?). Seems a shame to waste his experience?

      Delete
    12. Ah, whoops, I got the info about the whole season suspension wrong then - apologies.

      Delete
  2. Strange that Paweł Gil announced his retirement, is not active in Poland anymore but still accompanies Szymon Marciniak in UEFA competitions.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Interesting appointments!

It becomes immediately obvious that the referees department were not really ready for the political decision to implement VAR for these games after the incidents last March.

Fedayi San - who correct me if I'm wrong was never even considered safe enough to be AVAR for Schärer in CL/EL - is now lead VAR for the Swiss referee. Same with the Czech VARs.

I guess Čeferin (understandably) doesn't really care about a VAR mess in a Pot 4 vs Pot 6 game, compared to a missed goal in SRBPOR. But I do think that UEFA have really risked quite a lot here.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To clarify - that's nothing against San who I think is a very good referee, though I'm not familiar with his VAR work at home.

But it is weird that UEFA essentially said that he wasn't good / experienced enough in the role to work with his compatriot before... and now he is.

      Delete
    2. To say it directly, there are surely specific choices by UEFA and FIFA regarding VAR assignment. While in some games we have VARs who never worked in UEFA games (like the Swiss), in other ones we have different choice. Valeri VAR with a Slovenian AVAR for what sounds a big match on paper is the example of that.
So, to answer your question, yes. Important matter was to introduce VAR, and this can be enough for some games, but regarding other games, UEFA wants specific VARs to be assigned.

      Delete
    3. Hmmmm - I would say that PORIRL and FRABIH are basically the same level of prestige. The question is of necessity surely. Slovenia's VAR project debuted this season, if I recall correctly? ISR, CZE, SUI officials are all much more experienced with the system.

But not seen as experienced / skilled enough until now :)

      Delete
    4. But some match needs to be the first international match for any VAR. So it's unavoidable, that there are some debuts in the WC qualifiers and/or the EL group stage. I think, it's understandable to rather do it in these competitions than in CL.

However it's interesting that UEFA doesn't really follow FIFA's idea of having dedicated FIFA VMOs - with some officials appointed, who are not on the list.
BTW, the link here is broken:

Maybe the document can be uploaded and linked either there or below the UEFA categories in the side bar?

    7. Thanks, so indeed two VARs, who are not on the list: Gillett and Hrubes. While Gillett might be a special case, Hrubes clearly wasn't planned by FIFA to act in that role.
Then, several AVARs are also not on the FIFA list.

      Delete
    8. This is not correct. Fedayi SAN was for example AVAR in the following match:
in UEL on 18 February 2021 (Real Sociedad de Futbol – Manchester United)
      Referee: Sandro Schärer (SUI, photo)
Assistant Referee 1: Stephane de Almeida (SUI)
Assistant Referee 2: Bekim Zogaj (SUI)

  7. Nice appointment for Jug and also happy to see Marciniak in a very important match. I like him as a referee and I hope to see him back among the top names.

Also very clear that domestic performances do not influence international appointments. Otherwise Dennis Higler would never be there after two rather disastrous performances in the Dutch league. I hope he will surprise us with a good performance in Torshavn but if he brings his Dutch league form we can probably prepare for quite some controversy there.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I don't completely agree with your comment about Higler's form.
I didn't see FC Utrecht - Feyenoord yesterday, so I can't judge about that match. But I think Higler's performance in FC Twente - Ajax was actually pretty good.
It started as a really tense match, but he managed it very well with two pretty early correct YC's, which calmed things down. He didn't make any important mistakes and was completely in control.
I heard FC Utrecht - Feyenoord was chaotic, but - as I said - I didn't see anything of the match

      Delete
    2. Higler's foul detection in Enschede was terrible. Besides, he missed a crystal clear red card in that game. Yesterday, his foul detection was again not good + he had to be corrected two times for giving ghost penalties.

      Delete
    3. I am sorry but Higler´s performance during Twente-Ajax was very weak. And he lost the control completely. Unfortunately his start of the season is very poor.

  9. Russia VS Croatia for Grinfeeld : IMO it's a risk taken by UEFA.
It can be a tough game... And the Israelian referee did bad performances last weeks... Good luck to him !
Good appointment for Bastien, but Slovenia VS Slovaquia or Russia VS Croatia should be better. Good luck !
Good appointments for Marciniak (a good come back) and Hategan !

    1. Grinfeeld will not referee this game. Replaced by Reinshreiber. Grinfeeld will perform as VAR. Reason unknown. Probably injury. The only logical explanation.

      Delete
    2. Confirmed information. Reason not given.

      Delete
    3. The reason for such replacement can be an injury. For other reasons, he would have been fully removed.

      Delete
    4. Yep. I mentioned an injury. It cannot be covid or personal reasons. As a result we're gonna have the ref of a lower qualification for the potentially hard game.

      Delete
    5. Even a bigger risk now after the swap. This can be a really hot game.

    6. UEFA official explanation: minor injury.

    2. The reason behind Women's appointments in Male's UEFA games so far is the fact that they officiate in male domestic top league (Frappart and Monzul).

      Delete
    3. agreed! however, all of the above named received their fifa-badge for female-competitions. if their national fa's would need to choose between the male and female refs going on and counting for the same list, i am very sure we would all know who they would choose...i also think we all know that uefa does this for political and image reasons. to propagate some sort of female empowerment and equality even to the highest level...i really like frapparts management, it is top-class even in her own country...monzul, i think we agree has no right to be anywhere near a fifa spot in male refereeing.

    4. Thank you so much!
43': looks soft, but without further replay impossible to judge, I think not 100% wrong.
51': Correct YC but the fouled player who made the gesture of YC should have been booked as well.
68' Good timing by AR1 with VAR. Waiting and then raising flag. We must remember that this shouldn't be taken for granted by assistant referees from countries without VAR, correct decision.
      74' Correct YC.
90'+3 A couple of great ONSIDES first pass, and then ball in the middle, but what about this third offside, punishable?
      https://ibb.co/JFSQrpW
From 01:02 video minute. Maybe defender who tried to make the very last save was a bit impeded by attacker movement... however this would be a very harsh and "by book" call. :)

      Delete
    5. 90+3' - The position of the blue player at the moment of shot is indeed very problematic. If he wasn't there, would the yellow player have had a chance to make a save? Possible. But I don't think it's all clear enough for VAR to intervene.

      Delete
    6. 43' Debatable YC, I prefer no YC here
51' I disagree the player who made the gesture of YC should be booked as this is a "minor" gesture rather than a protest. Good decision for me
      68' Correct
      74' Correct
      93' Wonderful onside decision

      Delete
    7. Excellent cautions by Rumšas - I would highlight 41' especially as a brilliant call. Of course, on a EURO level, that would be an absurd booking, but in a KAZUKR game you simply have to act as a law enforcer (against such deliberate kicks); the Lithuanian was well prepared for a KAZUKR game. Good work from the assistants - I agree with Chefren and ESR re. +93'.

      Delete
    8. IMO all YCs are spot-on, the assisant's work looks great, absolutely correct offside prior to KAZ goal, decisive goal correctly allowed. Well done.

  14. Hot start for Jug and we have a possible RC for Cristiano Ronaldo!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, the OFR is for the penalty, there was something close to a violent conduct by Cristiano Ronaldo as well!

      Delete
    2. Too long OFR by Jug in front of monitor, this is not how VAR should be used.

      Delete
    3. I agree, that UEFA probably doesn't like that intervention - and by your comment I assume, it's also not expected in Italy, so surprising action by Valeri.
However I have some sympathy for it. As it is indeed really hard to determine, it seems sensible to let the referee take that critical decision - especially if the referee had a wrong perception (e.g. of a clearer foot contact).
Once at the monitor, it's understandable, that Jug took so much time as the different perspectives gave different impressions on whether the foot or the ball was touched first / at all.
As there is an angle, where a decisive touch on the foot seems quite likely, it is correct IMO to stay with the penalty decision.

      Delete
    4. The CR7 incident lacks intensity for a VC, I think. If the referee completely missed it, an OFR for a missed incident was still possible, but not necessary IMO.

      Delete
    5. Regarding the first part of your answer - let's also remember that these are FIFA games, WC qualifiers. So the "conflict" between FIFA and UEFA about how to use VAR could be the reason behind such intervention! I don't know whether in such games Rosetti & Co. give guidelines for VAR, or it is something managed directly by FIFA. In the second case, we would have an answer about Valeri's call: in line with what we saw at Olympics... but surely the confusion about VAR and this dualism don't help in looking for consistency.

      Delete
    6. Interesting point. If there are really specific FIFA instructions in place, they must have delivered them somehow to all the VARs appointed this week, ideally with at least some video training.

  18. VAR acting as Goal line Technology in awarding a goal for France initially missed by the referee as the ball crossed the line… no conclusive pictures but it was very well more in to the net than out of it. VAR already justified

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But I really hope, that VAR found more conclusive pictures than the TV director. Otherwise the intervention is doubtful, because the VAR needs a proof and can't just make a good guess.

      Delete
    2. Hopefully they had a goal line camera as you'd expect the national stadium of France to have and the length of time the check took was just clearing the APP. Because you are right that awarding a goal based on the camera angles we saw is very dubious even if it really does look like a goal.

  19. It been a while since i saw Marciniak but his fout detection is very poor tonight. It looks like he is not 100% fit so that he must gamble somtimes. Also AR many times not on the right place to make the right judges

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The foul detection is not the best indeed. But even more serious was no disciplinary sanctions after those two fouls in 10' and 11' I mentioned above. If the fourth official is not able to help in 10'... But we also must mention positives: correct YCs for holding (18', 25') and reckless scissor tackle (43'). Also good warning to Depay for UB after whistle (33').

It's hard to say but his choice of teammates is not the best. Listkiewicz who openly says that he doesn't like Paweł Gil in social media (shocking and highy unprofessional, like watching Olympics on smartphone when being AVAR...) or Musiał who is after a one-year break (lyme disease) and never presented high level both domestically and internationally.

  20. 2nd yellow for simulation for Cyprus. He certainly tried to sell a PK, but there was also some contact on his foot which to me makes the simulation yellow harsh.

Fabio Maresca is the most strict referee of the world regarding simulations!
I agree with you, but this is his style. Be sure that even after rewatching it, he would take same decision.
      Correct NO VAR intervention.

    2. I even had the impression, that the attacker immediately signalled, that he doesn't want a penalty.
I agree that the YC is a harsh decision and that this was nothing for VAR (who could only intervene for a missing penalty, but not for a wrong 2ndYC).

    3. I actually doubt Maresca see the contact, IMO this is not a harsh but a wrong decision

    4. Very harsh, I dont like this decision

  22. Incredible that Ronaldo didn’t get RC for that VC. He strongly punched (or was very close to punch) oponent in the head by his fist.

    1. By my perception, he only hits the opponent's arm - without real brutality. The opponent (who previously kicked the ball away) then simulates a contact at the head.
Therefore YC for both players would be the best solution IMO.

Replay at 10:43, if anyone wants to make a clip.

    2. I agree with Philipp. YC for both players is the best solution. Sue, Red if he would hit him in the head but he touched only his arm.

    1. I like it. Those challenges that go through an opponent and pin their ankle to the ground can cause major ligament damage and often go under punished.

    2. A RC can certainly be justified (high intensity and danger), but I don't think, the YC was a clear and obvious mistake.

    4. Well done by OFR, 100% RC from my view

    5. Basically for me a RC to be preferred, but I think YC not a 100% clear mistake for VAR, something like a 10% - 15% would be still missing.

      Delete
    6. I disagree Philipp. This is a 9/10 on UEFA scale for me. The lunge at high speed directly into the opponent. The lead leg is high with knee locked and studs exposed and the rest of his body/trail leg goes directly into the opponent taking out both legs with excessive force and endangers the opponents safety by pinning his ankle under the force of his challenge.

    7. I like the intervention, well done by 'newboy' Fedayi San IMO :)

    8. As french, 200% RC here. Look at leg torsion ! Clear violent tackle.

    9. I agree with the most of earlier comments, RC preferred but not sure if YC cannot be supported.

    11. I would highly praise the VAR for that correct decision. We cannot justify YCs for such dangerous attacks because there may be some doubts that it's 100% clear. The FRA player jumps into the opponent dynamically and with high intensity without a real chance to play the ball. The BOS player's leg buckles severely.
The FRA player seriously endangers the opponent's safety - Red Card.

    1. Correct in my opinion: Unusual action, but in the end a clear foul.

For the first penalty of the game (without OFR), the replays are not conclusive: I can't detect a contact, but it seems quite possible, that there is one. So we need to trust the referee and hope that the VAR had better pictures.

    1. I'd urge you (and anyone else) to watch this again. I'm seeing one of the most sophisticated and successful dives I've ever seen.

#16 starts to drag his right toe prior to any contact--FAR prior.

He then flicks his left leg outward into the tackling player to ensure contact in the hamstring region.

Look, it's a silly challenge. So I don't have a ton of sympathy for the defender. At the same time, in no way whatsoever is his tackle what brings the attacker down. The attacker could have easily hurdled or went around this challenge. I completely understand why the defender protested in the manner he did, while his teammates probably felt it was a stonewall penalty.

    2. Very particular incident, indeed. In my view, I share usaref view, attacker had in mind to simulate before any contact with defender, and he started to fall down without any contact (this is clearly visible in the first replays), then there is for sure at least a touch by defender with that tackle on the other leg when attacker is already falling down, VAR had to support for this reason. We can draw conclusion that attacker was lucky he could "mask" the simulation.
However, in reality it was impossible to see for referee, and VAR was right in supporting.

      Delete
    3. I would prefer an OFR for this - and here I fully agree with usaref - dive. What is VAR for, if not for incidents that are impossible to detect without replays.

      Delete
    4. It's in line with the VAR interventions from the last months, to stay silent here - BUT those are the scenes I strongly prefer a OFR for.
usaref explains very well, why I think that this penalty is de facto wrong.

  29. Interesting situation in POR-IRL, 87':
A shot on goal is deflected by the defender with the arm and the ball comes to a player who has a OGSO and is in an offside position. After the delayed flag, the referee gives a free kick for the handball.
In the LotG, we have this quote
"A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent."
So if the handball was deliberate, it could not be offside afterwards.
However I think, the decision still can be supported, because the handball doesn't have to be deliberate - "unnaturally bigger" is sufficient.
But I am interested in other opinions on that.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think the simpler answer is that this was a deflection and a save. Personally I don't think this is a handball offense, but you open up an interesting point. I guess it's a lot like a player scoring with their arm. We need to decide how accidental it was to whether we issue the yellow.

      Delete
    2. The handball must be deliberate or the offside will still be active. It's 100% clear in the laws of the game what they mean so don't misunderstand it. Unnatural position is absolutely not sufficient and will not cancel the offside at all.

    1. To be honest, i was not impressed by Marciniak at all tonight! Seen him far better! Missed a lot of minor fouls, and i'm sure iff this match was more intense he would have lost control totally, a lot of late whistles, and control was there because off the good behavior of the players, not because Marciniak was there.

    2. Indeed. This was not the best Marciniak and the whole team has not the required fitness

    2. In my opinion this is penalty but referee should have whistled it on the pitch. No VAR stuff because, despite of being evident, it is always a question about intensity of the charge and VARA is ruled out. It should be assessed as mistake by referee.

    3. Thank you. I think it should be a VAR intervention, it just looks too clumsy from the defender to be ignored.
