  1. Second game already for Balakin, while his higher-ranked countrymen have none so far. Probably a category update is due there - and obviously Balakin's EL debut.
Frappart also with a second appointment - will be interesting, how she will be used this season also in CL.

Rather weak appointments for First Group members Kehlet and Verissimo.

More experienced VARs used this time with Aranovsky the only debut, I think.

  2. Taylor with the biggest one in this set.

Balakin, Kehlet and Kuĺbakoŭ for potentially hot games. Especially the usually lenient Dane is a very risky choice for Andorra - San Marino. Players of both teams often play in a brutal manner, I remember many SFPs in games involving either Andorra or San Marino.

The Poland - Albania game could be very interesting too. Many injuries in Polish team, journalists are negative about the Portuguese coach and a potential loss or draw will significantly decrease the chances for advance for Poland. It will be interesting how the game will look like and how Mariani will handle it.

  3. Interesting appointment also for Gözübüyük. The first match between these teams involved quite some controversy with some unlucky penalty decisions by Vincic. I'd say it's an important chance for Serdar to show his ability in a higher profile match, maybe with some perspective on becoming the second Dutchman in Elite group?

    1. or maybe this is a last chance after his very public criticism a little while ago, when he basically said, that apart from him nobody would really see his "potential"...

  4. I don't remember whether VAR is used or not in Denmark, but given the German VARs for Kehlet I would say no? In this case, the game could be exclusively used for allowing Kehlet to make experience with VAR in UEFA competitions, no matter the teams involved.

    1. So it is particular, that, differently from other appointments, there are VAR from another country. Maybe VAR still needs development in Denmark.

    1. I'm sorry, no info. I must say, until a few years, about WC qualifiers, FIFA site always reported all assignments before the games. Now it seems as everything has changed. We know the appointments thank to UEFA, otherwise we would have the same problem. FIFA doesn't publish appoitnments anymore.
      You should contact CAF...

  15. Surprised VAR didn't recommend an OFR for a Spain penalty for the incident in the 33rd minute

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I agree, that this should be a penalty. The holding by #2 might be ignorable but #7 clearly puts his leg into the path of the attacker and is fully responsible for the contact.
Taylor had a clear view, so the barrier for intervention is expected to be high, but it's hard to find arguments against a penalty.

  16. First 15-20 minutes of POL-ALB were very difficult for Mariani. He decided to only manage the reckless studs challenge by Frankowski POL (2') and some seconds later a reckless tackle by Abrashi ALB followed. Big chaos after this foul and he had to give a card for that. Albanians were very unhappy at this point (4'). And shortly afterwards they became VERY unhappy after another two yellow cards for holding SPAs (7', 11'). Fortunately, the game calmed down later. Many small fouls but nothing major (maybe apart from potential YC for stamp not given to Trashi in 41'). Poland is very lucky to have this 2:1 result now, Albania were playing better after Poland scored for 1:0. We'll see how the second half will go!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Second half was less difficult if we talk about disciplinary matters but several key match incidents had to be assessed. They were:
      52' - POL's penalty appeal after tackle
      54' - play-on prior to 3:1 goal
      65' - ALB's penalty appeal after tackle
68' - POL's goal disallowed due to offside (well done, AR2!).

While the two first incidents are rather correct play-on calls, the Albania's penalty appeal in 65' is very controversial. I think penalty should have been given and VAR intervention was required.

    2. I don’t think it’s a penalty, or at least I don’t think it’s VAR stuff. If you just focus on the attacker, his last step with the right foot before being hit is clearly in the direction of the defender, not towards the ball. From my point of view, it could’ve been whistled, but it’s never a clear mistake.

  17. Handball penalty by Frappart (50') clearly correct

    ReplyDelete

    1. And another penalty in 61', this time with the help of VAR. Probably she had the wrong perception that the ball was played first, but replays showed that wasn't the case - so the penalty is correct.
Quick VAR process, game was even stopped for the OFR and it took overall 80 seconds from the foul to the final decision. Some delay was caused by the monitor being hard to find...

      Delete
    2. And in 81' the third penalty, this time given directly and a supportable decision IMO. Also correct not to give a (2nd) YC for it, because it was neither reckless nor SPA (just a bit stupid...).

No var intervention!! How it is possible

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I can give you the motivation, given that it was an Italian VAR and so I know how they work: it is not a clear and obvious mistake because the intensity of touch by attacker on defender is not clear. Mostly, interventions for missed penalties are for steps on foot but very rarely for other situations if not very blatant and missed by referee.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Chefren about the VAR aspect, but nonetheless, I see a penalty here. The defender is in the worse position and tries to play the ball away, but he fails to do so. Penalty is the correct(er) outcome IMO.

  19. Maybe excellent game Gozubuyuk and excellent advantage 1-1 Bulgaria 👍

  20. SWE - ESP the situation mentioned in first half.
    https://streamja.com/2z4e6
Trying an explanation for VAR missed intervention: defeder puts leg, but he doesn't create directly contact with opponent, the contact happens only after a movement by attacker, so in this regard, one can't say how much this contact was sought. I know that it is a harsh reasoning and penalty would be expected decision here, but in my opinion extremely borderline decision, and VAR can have his small arguments. Taylor made gestures and was close, but surely he didn't see that, he rather saw what the other defender did (and in this case of course, never VAR stuff). VAR will never be perfect in such situations, because not 100% objective cases. The very clear situation are when defenders make a movment and they hit drectly opponent, especially on foot. The rest can be discussed, but surely VAR can't be faultless in its application and some pitch decisions must be accepted.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Both defenders make clear fouls. The first one holds and pushes the attacker and the second one trips him. It’s one of the most obvious penalties I have seen this year.

      Delete
    2. While I understand (and approve of) Chefren's explanation about VAR's shall doubts, the penalty is quite obvious IMO. How is the attacker supposed to continue his way to the goal with two players clearly impeding him in doing so. He certainly seems to want to proceed, but he isn't able to do so. He is stopped unfairly, penalty to be issued.

  21. Stéphanie Frappa penalty incidents in LTU - NIR.

    50'
Good decision, live the perception of punishable handball stopping a shot on goal was high, VAR confirmed.
    https://streamable.com/rbhrzg

    61'
OFR, forgetting for a while the position of monitor at stadium :)
And to add, I don't know why monitor was covered, maybe because in Lithuania it was the very first time they used it?
About the incident, I think she was surprised by the fast break into the penalty area by attacker, following a lost ball and for this reason she couldn't make the best assessment.
    https://streamable.com/xxq33g

    81'
In my opinion supportable call, as well as NO CARD decision, in case it would have been the second for the player involved.

    1. I agree with your assessments. 61' is a bit tricky, as the defender is ball oriented and the attacker just puts his foot inbetween, but I still think VARint is expected.
