does anyone know if var will be handled from nyon, or if they will be on tv-compound?
ReplyDeleteAllegedly, with some single exceptions, VMO’s for all CL and EL matches perform their duties in Nyon, and could be appointed more than once in a single matchday.
ReplyDeletethank you for quick response :) very sure then that we will see double-appointments. with two "var-competitions" now that means 8+8+16 var-matches, hence 64 people would be needed...i think it would be impossible to manage this. also - hopefully - having less people manage more games will lead to an even more consistent quality when it comes to interventions. less people need to be briefed beforehand and var-supervisors can go more into detail in analysis afterwards. i think this is good, as we saw it in euro2020 likewise!

ReplyDeleteI was about to ask for knowing more about the very particular appointment of some AVARs (Irrati, Di Bello, van Boekel), but we have already the answer. All will be in Nyon so it is easy to appoint big names in both VAR and AVAR roles for some games.

With the Retirement or prospective retirement of 3 big names in European Kuipers, Skomina and Brych, there is definitely a change in the hierarchy of Elite European referee which Oliver is probably benefiting from already!
ReplyDeleteAlso there has been a change in the VAR team….. although there is no exclusive var Team for a referee, Christopher Kavanagh has worked exclusively with Oliver and Attwell with Taylor,, this probably shows that Kavanagh isn’t trusted as VAR for the game Oliver was appointed for, or something is up with Kavanagh because he hasn’t officiated a single game this season!

DeleteGillet hasn’t done an England PL game yet but when being REnominated to FIFA list (rather than first time), can technically be in Jan of first season (rather than usual 18 months).
DeleteInterestingly this would take place away from 1 of two possible refs (probably England) who could fill our usual quota of 10 places.
Or could Gillet be given an ‘11th’ place as an unusual exception - does seem a shame not to use his experience, if he is willing / available for international games.
After a disgraceful period of never getting close to having enough referees eligible, England suddenly have a few to choose from!!
Big game for Oliver!
ReplyDeleteQuite surprising appointments. Frankowski with a big game for a first group referee, it is only his second CL appointment. Strange management to not appoint Polish VAR's, it seems UEFA has only trust in 10-15 VAR's.
ReplyDeleteOliver with the first big clash of the group stage, deserved IMO after a very good EURO. However a quite disappointing match for Taylor.

DeleteAbout Oliver and Taylor, the order of their appointment is indeed surprising and shows that they are at least on the same level now for UEFA.
Makkelie's appointment is below "normal" for his level, I think. But probably he is still recovering from the EURO SF.

DeleteI must admit I am confused on how the committee see Oliver. On one hand he never seems to get appointed far into the UCL following the JUV-RMD QF, yet then was given a Qf at Euro. Though I think he also got a top clash at the start of the group stage last year. I just find it difficult to predict where he will pop up? Any insights on how Rosetti rates him?
ReplyDeleteI think, Oliver is rated highly by UEFA at the moment, otherwise he wouldn't get those appointments (EURO QF and now Barca-Bayern). Problem for him last season were the English teams, therefore nearly no space for English referees in KO stage - and apparently Taylor was rated even higher.
DeleteWill be an interesting "battle" between them for England's no 1.
And the fact that he hardly can see Italian teams is surely another factor to consider. However, if not Juventus, I hope that he can meet again some Italian clubs this season. He had Atalanta two years ago if I'm not wrong, but then nothing else.

DeleteMost of the players of 2018 Juventus have now left though. Buffon who he sent off is left. Kuipers refereed Verratti 2 months after he told him to ‘f*** off’. I think enough time and circumstances has gone for Oliver to get another Juventus game.

I think too much conclusions/assumptions on referees’ statuses are made only after the appointments of a half matchday of CL…
ReplyDeleteIt seems reasonable that Uefa makes the ‘risky’ appointments early in the Group Stage, as nothing will be decided there. And if ‘lower rated’ refs get serious appointments, that means ‘higher rated’ refs can get a less sonorous game. If for example Oliver gets three games like Barcelona-Bayern in Group Stage and Taylor three less important appointments we can draw a conclusion about Oliver’s status vs Taylor’s, at this moment that’s complete nonsense for me.
Makkelie still recovering from Euro SF? Recovering from what? Recovering is something a referee does after a period of sub-par performances… You don’t recover after a single soft penalty decision, much discussed but hardly to be blamed for (and not even wrong in the eyes of Uefa’s refereeing authorities). So that’s nonsense for me as well.
Quality comment, absolutely correct. The Champions League will have been looked at as a whole, key matches appointed. Not every MD are there loads of big games (as I have talked about with WC Quals) but the Elite refs will be appointed, otherwise there is no point having categories

ReplyDeleteAlthough this point may not be too important, I have to say I am surprised by the appointments for 4th officials among the English referees. Although replacements just before or during games are thankfully very rare, God forbid something happens to Oliver on the night we would see Darren England in charge of BAR-BAY. Nothing against England but he is new to SG1 and has little to no experience of 'big' games. Why not send Pawson with Oliver just for extra security? Or even Tierney, rather than using him as AVAR?
Anyway, good luck to all referees.
It would be a way for him to make his mark. He's done a couple of big games like Man City vs Brighton last year. But was surprised he got appointed 4th for a huge match but saying that David Coote (Michael's 4th during the international) has a youth champion league match.

DeleteFrom what I saw live the Leeds player got the ball with one foot as he caught Elliot in the back of the knee with his other one. Could be wrong though, like you said no replays. Also bizarre presentation by Pawson, wondering if he wasn't sure which plyaer it was. Not sure if there was a VAR intervention or not.

DeleteI think that RC should have been issued but I agree with NO VAR INTERVENTION. Should have been issued directly by referee.
DeleteThere are a few arguments in favor of YC: the unexpected tackle by opponent, too short time to react and avoid the contact. Extremely borderline. Basically a RC, but YC can't be assessed as 100% mistake.
We should talk abiut this, who are the candidates for the UCL and UEL finals this season? For UEL I would go with Vincic, it seems a safe choice. But I'm not sure about UCL. All experienced referees have already had a final. Taylor would be available but it would be a miracle not to have an English team involved in the final. Could Makkelie be called sooner than he should? Depending on the performance, another logical option would be Turpin, after last year UEL. Who else? Oliver, Hategan, Del Cerro and Karasev are backup but I don`t think they are ready for a final. Not yet.

I think, you (matei) already made a good analysis. Based on experience and previous appointments Turpin, Makkelie and Taylor should be the frontrunners for CL final, if they have a good season and their nation is not in it.

ReplyDeleteOT: Croatian football federation announced on their website today that Ivana Martincic is appointed for EURO Qualification U-21 match in October. I must say I am very proud as Croatian that she is appointed in UEFA's man competition, expecialy considering that only Frappart and Monzul are in the same situation.

Excellent if Letexier directly spotted it, possible help by both AR1 and FO, but they were not so much closer than Letexier. So I'm very happy that they were able to see that, not easy!
For sure not AR1. At the end of the footage you may observe that AR1 is not looking at the spot of the foul; he is following the ball.

Very much agreed, but for me the situation in 11. is not a missed YC because I considered the tackle between careless and reckless. Given the moment in the game and nothing happened before I thought he used the grey area very good.
DeleteWOW, what a game for Kulbakov. First penalty correctly given after VAR; I have some doubts about the second one. I'm sure many other referees wouldn't have given that one but for sure supportable and no VAR stuff. Third and forth (after VAR intervention) correct.
ReplyDeleteI really don't like Kulbakov's body language. He seems to be almost bored, very passive, for example the way he walked to the monitor is just not a great look for a referee imo.

DeleteI must say that maybe my opinions about holdings are not always 100% objective because in Italy we have the attitude to study the behavior and reaction of fouled players instead of analyzing the holding itself! 11' penalty appeal (pushing); basically, the litte push would justify a penalty call, the defender panics and pushes his opponent to the ground, but not enough in that context (bigger picture refereeing) for me
35' penalty appeal (impeding), quite a lot contact produced by the defender here, but all in all again not enough for a penalty, clever defending in my view
Lille - Wolfsburg: missed throw-in by AR1 before a goal scored, goal annulled. I think that assistant referee had his view obstructed by a player, he was very close to the incident.
ReplyDeleteLILLE / WOLSBURG = completely disappointed by VAR intervention to disallow goal for allegeted throw-in missed by AR 1. Not clear evidence that ball was really out. Perhaps last replay but not clear. For me, pitch decision had to be supported. Not clear mistake !
ReplyDeleteIndeed what I wanted to add is that in such situations VAR should send the evidence for the changed decision. When this kind of incident (ball out before goal) happened in serie A, this was never shown. I don't understand if they can be really 100% sure, but we should trust... Rosetti instructed them very well. My curiosity would be to know how they can be sure. I was told that in such circumstances they use the same software for offside.

DeleteI agree that there wasn't enough intereference in the last situation but they punished an offside position before. So correct decision without OFR.

If that is the VAR output that means it was the interference that was supposedly punished!!! Because that is what Chris Kavanagh has given to the VAR operator to distribute to broadcasters!!! If this is so then I must say this is horrible, first of all An OFR should take place and that interference is in no way punishable!! UEFA has to realease the proper image that was deemed offside if it wasn’t the image shown!!!

DeleteCorrect decision, VAR graphics is related to a previous pass, it was the player who then made the cross, to be offside when he reached ball (shown in the video I linked at the end).
So there were two different moments, and AR2 missed this previous offside. No uffsides later, everything OK.
Objective decision, without need of OFR.

ReplyDeleteYes. I think that it happened because the face of DKV19 (Garmash) is quite similar to the one of DKV5 (Sydorchuk), who already had one YC, so without looking at the shirt/shorts number he mistake the players.

DeleteRegarding all the crucial decisions in such challenging game one could be surely satisfied if not more, because he needed a "real" VAR intervention only in one situation and you can even understand why, but what was missing was surely the connection with players and game management. In first half game was about to explode after some fouls (25', 28'...).
About the OFR, I think he had assessed a shoulder / shoulder duel, but this was the missing particular that allowed Dankert to intervene:
