  1. Russian ref for Kazahstan and German for Austria match could have avoided IMO

    1. I know that German referees used to be appointed just for friendly matches of Austria's national team and vice versa for a very long time but I never understood the reason for that kind of policy. Maybe with regard to the times some 80 years ago? Our common language should not be an argument, under such circumstances Swiss referees would not be allowed to handle Germany, Italy, France and some other countries.

  2. Slavko Vinčić will officiate Ukraine - France, a game that in 2013 (WC PlayOff) was a real problem for another Slovenian referee and his assistants, you all remember what happened there... but now no worries with VAR.

    1. Damir lost the WC because of that game...

    2. @Rokyrr

      That is not completely true.

  3. With Fuxman the first Third Category referee is appointed in this campaign. Maybe caused by Grinfeeld's injury (i.e. Reinshreiber was planned for this match)?

Rather weak matches for Treimanis and Visser.
On the other hand, a very good appointment for Frankowski.
The rest are normal appointments IMO.

  4. Dutch VAR team in Gibraltar- Turkey while they are in the same group as the Netherlands

    1. Yes, particular indeed.
Don't know whether UEFA and FIFA were aware or not when they made this appointment, however it is possible that for some reasons there weren't other options and they consider Gibraltar - Turkey as a game that on paper shouldn't create any trouble to Turkish team... but still one can discuss.

    2. This (VAR in group with team from his country) also happened frequently in CL last season.

    3. Yes, but with clubs it can sound a bit different, in the case of national teams, the association with the nationality is more direct.

  5. Croatian team with obvious goal to give VAR experience to all 3 prospective referees, usually in Croatian league there is always one main and one assistant referee in VAR room.

  6. Frankowski with an important match, a surprising nomination for me, but good luck to the Polish team

  7. frappart first female var in a fifa men's competition, right? i remember steinhaus being avar in ucl/uel sometimes. but never as "main" var, and never in a nationalteams competition, right?

    1. She was main VAR in both U17 World Cup 2019 and the Olympics this year

  8. Is Brisards AR2 a non-FIFA Assistant Referee?

    1. Indeed NO FIFA, very particular choice for a WC qualifier game.
Given this appointment, I think he will be FIFA since 2022.

  9. Rather soft penalty by Fuxman in Latvia - Norway, but no VAR stuff.
Very long time before Grinfeeld's confirmation.

    1. And even softer penalty in Slovenia vs Malta. Just the usual corner routine, everyone pushing everyone but I saw nothing that would have justified penalty decision.

  10. Normal game for Jérôme Brisard. One minor Ireland's penalty appeal acceptably rejected (52'). Three correct YCs: 17IRL for reckless challenge on GK, 18AZE for dissent and 14IRL for SPA-holding.

Azeri goalkeeper was wasting time on several occasions but was well warned in 47' and further attempts were cunning enough (pretending injuries after small touch, etc.) to avoid a caution.

Brisard had a rare manner of running to the place of infringement after several minor incidents. Perhaps he expected a hot game and thought it's going to help him prevent potential conflicts. Nothing against if it helps the referee. Today it worked well and didn't have a negative influence on the game.

Good, expected level performance of this first category referee.

    1. @anty75, defender clear holds the attacker. What argument is against penalty. In front of the referee; clear view. Well done by the Latvian referee

    2. I don't see holding, defenders hand is on attackers shoulder but thats all, no holding. You will have 10 penalties each match for such "fouls"

      Delete
    3. I don't think it's a wrong call but definitely a soft one. I.e. no observer would lower a mark for not giving this penalty. Treimanis was perfectly positioned, therefore a stronger impression of what happened.

  12. Correct intervention by Stegemann in Israel-Austria, handball before goal. Difficult to see on the pitch, I would say.

  13. NED - MNE
Penalty by Gil Manzano, confirmed by VAR

  14. Good VAR intervention in Faroe Islands - Denmark, tight offside before a goal, correctly disallowed.

  15. 58 ‘ : hum hum Dropped Ball and Pogba touched the ball clearly before ball to ground…Vincic wasn’t concentrated and his team too…Not very important but unbelievable technical mistake at this level…

    1. If you get hit by the ball you want to get on with the game, and not be THAT referee who calls it back because technically ther restart was not correct IMO

  16. Extremely boring football game for Bartosz Frankowski. A minor handball penalty appeal rejected, no replay shown but even live one can see the handball was stick to the body (48').

Good stepped approach: warnings in 14' and more serious in 28'. Everybody knew it's the last warning. Three mandatory YCs given: 2SVK for reckless tackle, 9SVK for wild dissent (he argued that AR1 flagged for offside after throw-in but in fact he flagged offside after 9SVK's header to another teammate, quite funny scene) and GK CRO for time wasting.

Some points for consideration. I would prefer a strong warning after dissent at AR2 by 7SVK (50'). There was a missed careless-reckless use of arm by 9CRO where I think the fourth official should have helped Frankowski in spotting that (66'). A missed pushing close to pk in 72' was another lapse in foul detection.

Frankowski was very fit, agile and able to quickly change his position. Not a type of players' friend but rather a distant, focused but also feeling the game type of referee. I would compare him to Makkelie.

In general, a good, expected level performance by the Pole from first category.

  17. GIB - TUR, 1'
Interesting situation with a penalty reported to Tohver by AR1.
You can see him making the OK gesture to his teammate after the whistle, that happened a bit later.
If not the foul, AR at least surely reported that the incident had occurred inside the box.
    VAR confirmed.

    1. Very soft PK IMO, I'm not even sure I want VAR to confirm. I think the PK is wrong. What's your oppinion?

      Delete
    2. The penalty is extremely soft, for me rather wrong or, better to say, not to be whistled, but VAR is forced to confirm in this case!

    3. Remarkably nervous, insecure acting referee with many gestures.
      IMO it's a play-on.

  18. Penalty by Fuxman in LVA - NOR.

    Long check by Grinfeeld.
In my opinion wrong call, but VAR couldn't change this decision.
