    1. Really strange. He is Head of VAR in Cyprus.

      Delete
    2. Actually the idea, that heads of VAR still work in that role, doesn't sound too bad. In that way, they keep closely connected to the practical work and can include those experiences in their leadership role.

  2. Rosetti will be observer in Monaco - Sturm Graz!
Make your prediction if you want!

    1. Wow, there must be something special. I predict a (pretty) young elite german referee: Stieler/Zwayer. Both are 40yo. The chosen one will be nr. 2 after Siebert of course. I personnaly prefer Stieler.

      Delete
    2. Or maybe Ekberg to confirm his promotion. Siebert is observed by Sajn and Guzubuyuk by Dallas.
It would not be strange if Rosetti will observe Ekberg and Batta will observe Madden

      Delete
    3. I think there will be Zwayer in Monaco. Stieler has his AR Gittelmann with Siebert, and Zwayer would be the right option: I see him getting back in his standard so far. VAR could be Stegemann.

      Delete
    4. My prediction for Monaco-Sturm is Kabakov or Rumsas.

      Delete
    5. My prediction: Lawrence Visser

  3. Đurđević is in Serbia one of the best main VAR in this season from the beginning of the VAR project. And he is all the time appointed for the Red Star or Partizan games... Most experience..

    ReplyDelete
  4. So I was right with Rumsas being observed by Rosetti. After his appointments in qualifications this wqs expected IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  5. First observation: it seems as some games are covered from Nyon, while other ones with VAR at stadium. For sure main reason is that there are too many games played simultaneously but clearly choices have been made...

    1. seems to be so! also, do i see some new observer names? Saliy and Kos i havent seen before...

      Delete
    2. I remember having seen Drago Kos' name in earlier appointment sections, but indeed it's the first time I see Pavel Saliy (KAZ)

      Delete
    3. Kos is observer for years now and Saliy since for more than two years now. Most recently he was appointed in WC qualifiers Albania-San Marino.
Still no new observers, all appointed observers are active for at least 2 years.

  6. Really an interesting set of appointments! On the one side, referees with a long history like Stavrev. I really like that he gets this matches.
On the other hand, prospect referees like Pejlto, Tohver, Ekberg and Rumsas.

Also, interesting to see Blom as VAR under the eyes of Rosetti. That might mean there is more trust in him than shown at EURO.

  7. Very happy for Rumsas. Early test for the Lithuanian under the eyes of Rosetti, I still have the big question mark of his 16 YCs in Anorthosis-Maccabi Haifa (he was good in UKR-KAZ 2 weeks ago though) but I think that he's very talented and has Elite potential, hopefully everything goes well.

After the 'fever' of Spanish referees in WC qualifiers window, zero Spanish appointments in UEL/UECL MD1, besides Hernández Hernández's VAR role.

    1. Take into accound that Spanish referees (upper cat 2)like De Burgos or Cuadra are appointed as AVAR in CL this round, so doing AVAR on Tuesday/Wednesday and UEL (on the field) on Thursday, it´s a bit tight ! Gil Manzano / Del Cerro, not expect to see them in these first UEL rounds (reserved for UCL). Martinez Munuera, he´s actually a VAR referee for Uefa. The other Munuera (Munuera Montero) has not the trust of Uefa, seeing his few appointments. So I expect appointments for Cuadra, de Burgos and Hernandez Hernandez (this last one, maybe a debut in UCL ??) in next rouds.

      Delete
  8. Interesting: the same spanish VAR and AVAR team (Alejandro Hernández and Guillermo Cuadra Fernández), wednesday for Champions League in Portugal (Sporting-Ajax) and thursday for Europa League in England with a portuguese field team (Leicester-Napoli).

  9. Surprise is not seeing Bebek for a very long time.
He is not injured anymore so the only reason is his bad performances in past, but that is still not convixing reason to not appoint him.
However, now it is obvious that focus is now on Jovic and Strukan

    1. Bad performances from 5 years ago? He had qualifying round and Conference league play-off. Maybe he will be appointed on MD2…we’ll see

      Delete
    2. Yes, he had 2 not so big and important matches, maybe he is very low on the uefa radar.

On the other hand, Jovic has a big match, will be interesting to see how he performs.

      Delete
    3. I think you should delete "maybe" in the comment above...Bebek is no longer the committee's favor

      Delete
  10. That was a clear penalty in favour of Legia, surprise VAR didn't get involved. And VAR Jovanović was also a referee in the Spartak vs Benfica match a month ago, he didn't whistle at least two possible penalties in favour of Benfica.
I think UEFA should avoid situations when a referee is appointed for consecutive matches of one particular team...

  11. Good match for mr. Bognar. Good to see him in Europe with VAR. He was convincing 3rd round and playoff in last weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Minute 8' crucial decision by Jug: Muslera booked for SPA following a desperate attempt to reach ball. The reason for YC can be that player indeed kicked the ball to get the foul, so he wouldn't have reached it again. I must add, during the live sequence it looked like Muslera had used a certain force, but replay says OK to YC in this regard as well.

  13. Betis - Celtic Jovic (CRO)

12' Disallowed goal for Celtic for an attacker's foul. IMO the goal is valid.

    1. After VAR intervention, the goal counts. 0-1.

      Delete
  14. Correct VAR decision in BET CEL to give CEL goal after on field given handball. Nowhere near a handball

    ReplyDelete
  15. Missed 2nd yc IMO for CEL 12. Correct to book BET 18 for dissent afterwards tho

    ReplyDelete
  16. The goal scored by Celtic, allowed after OFR:
    https://streamja.com/JLQB4
One can indeed have perception that attacker scored by arm.

  17. I must say that I'm very impressed by Jug presence and officiating in recent games. He looks definitely a different referee than the past.
Now maybe the experience helped him to develop, but it is a pity because he had many years to make the big step in Elite and he didn't manage that. Very convincing, firm, solid, at least so far (but in his previous games as well, in my opinion).

  18. Fran Jovic struggling in Seville big time

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Totally agree he is losing control big time, first goal is really hard to see, understandable to give incorrect but, Celtic 12 should have been sent off for 2 yellows. Good decision for penalty. However Betis players extremely angry and losing control now. Expect a fiery end to this game

  21. Penalty by Peljto in Lokomotiv Moscow - Marseille and straight RC for DOGSO:
    https://streamja.com/EZpwq

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Actually Peljto showed YC for SPA.
RC is a SYC, and not a straight one for DOGSO.

      Delete
    2. Was it clearly shown on tv that the sending off is due to a second YC? UEFA website still mentions a straight RC (which would be the wrong decision for me).

      Delete
    3. No room for doubt, on TV you clearly see Peljto showing the YC then the RC. UEFA website got it wrong.

      Delete
    4. OK, no complaints in that case. Thanks!

      Delete
    5. UEFA still reports direct RC. Sorry for the wrong info!
YC is indeed more appropriate decision, however RC wouldn't have been removed by VAR, I think (not a genuine foul and you can read it as DOGSO).

Beaton penalty to Crvena zvezda. I'm not convinced. Serbian (fouled) player puts the leg and then what happens? Almost nothing.

    1. I do not think this is a penalty, but let's wait for a more clear replay. At least I am not convinced from this replay

      Delete
    2. There was better replay. Enough contact for penalty. Often situation. Beside that, excellent performance from Beatom in not demanding match. I didn’t remember any mistake, nor there were protests (beside this PK).

      Delete
    3. Here's from another angle. https://streamja.com/zPnPL

      Delete
    4. Very wierd movement indeed!
Based on the pictures, defender cannot be penalised in my view. Attacker makes a movement towards the defender and falls down..

      Delete
    5. Thanks for this video, still the same idea for me. The contact justifies NO VAR intervention and I agree, but actually I disagree. The contact is caused by attacker who puts leg there, defender does nothing.

      Delete
    6. If it is given for tripping, no YC because of a genuine attempt would even be better by my understanding. A YC for leg offences should only be given if they are clearly intentional (in case of SPA & penalty), I think.

      Delete
    7. Expected and supportable decision IMO, although a play on would have had to be supported by VAR also.

      Delete
  23. 6 subs, injuries, goals, time wasting and somehow only 3 minutes of added time in Betis v Celtic!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Very good performance from Peljto.
The Bosnian has shown a very sharp display - management, disciplinary control, body language - all on a high level. I was impressed by his confidence and natural authority on the pitch.
Correct PK and SYC concerning KMI.
Great evening for the referee and his crew.

  25. Kinda surprised for the VAR correction in FRA-FEN, thought that AR2's offside call was correct but at the end it's a goal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. https://streamja.com/d5L5q
Complex situation. Which offside was reported by AR2?
It seems as the player in front of keeper was assessed as not punishable, one can discuss, despite of having disinterested in playing ball, maybe he obstructed keeper.
Or maybe wasn't he offside at all?

      Delete
    2. Looks like the player is in the line of vision and offside in these pictures.

  26. Correct decisive PK by Mariani in Frankfurt but I hate when referees spend too much time warning players and goalkeeper about invasions.

At the end PK missed (it was expectable after so much delay) and goal disallowed after VAR intervention as Berisha invaded the box before the kick.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Now a (well-managed IMO) mass confrontation, what a game!

      Delete
    2. Indeed this story that players must be always instructed can be a bit annoying if you ask me. Referees must always make the same things, talking, giving warning, and time is wasted. I would leave the knowledge of LotG to players themselves. Would be fair enough also because, you can see, such warnings mostly don't have any positive result, as players always commit infringments...
Having said that, I didn't watch the game but I'm happy if Mariani had a good performance in a difficult context.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, the effect of the ¿almost two? minutes spent warning since the ball was planted in the spot was 1) Pelkas to deconcentrate and miss the PK and 2) the PK area invasion to happen anyway.

      Delete
    4. There was one Frankfurt player inside also. I can’t believe how Irrati missed it.

      Delete
  27. I can report a good performance by Tiago Bruno Lopes Martins in Leicester - Napoli, wise card management, correct second YC issued for a blant holding in the last minutes of second half, game was mostly fair with both teams focused on football. He showed also alertness in a few moments in which confrontations could have happened, everything was always under control. AR1 with a correction by VAR, missed offside for a goal scored in second half. VAR disallowed it, tight offside, maybe could have been seen, but not a big miss.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mariani in Frankfurt today :-(

    - Inconsistent foul identification throughout the match
    - Cards correct
    - Correct (IMHO) offside decision on Fenerbahce goal, absolutely no idea why VAR deemed it correct
    - WAY TOO long warnings about encroachment after somewhat acceptable, though also questionable, penalty. Psyched out the penalty taker; then VAR took the goal thereafter back (correctly).

Not convinced by him today, though also not the very worst performance I've seen for these kind of matches with that kind of crowd.

    1. How was the VAR intervention on penalty incident correct?

      Delete
    2. it was quite tricky: first var needed to check, if there was an offense by he gk. but the gk stopped the penalty with one foot on the line correctly. then var needed to check, if the attacker who then scored the rebound-goal entered the box too early. from my perspective i want to say: how can a referee make so much fuzz about encroachment prior to the pk and then miss almost 2 meters of encroachment in front of his eyes and give the goal? also var should have seen, that there was also a defender in the box. hence IMO the penalty should have been retaken.
so this was to the penalty. maybe a bit quirky but in the end most important thing was not to allow the goal.
i still have no idea why there was an intervention with the fenerbace goal? ozil was not offside, that was shown in the replay. but the other attacker was clearly obstructing the gk's line of vision and was half a meter offside?

      Delete
  29. IMO expected performance by Rumsas in front of Rosetti, players focused in playing, no big issues in match control and little to zero crucial incidents to assess. Only 3 cards (MON14 in 32' - reckless challenge, STU5 in 64' - SPA holding and STU8 in 90+3' - reckless challenge, I'd had liked to see a YC for STU10 in 1H for persistent infringement after he commited 4 fouls without even being a defensive player, only got a strong verbal warning after the last one)

  30. Excellent Bognar in Athen. Match was totally under control correct SYC in min91.Very good AR2 disallowed goal. Expect next appointment in UEL.

  32. Here are two pictures about the offside and penalty situation in Mariani's game.

    1. I think both decisions were wrong. First goal of Fenerbahce was offside IMO. Because Fenerbahce player is in the line of vision.

Second one, still i don't understand why ifk was decided. Fenerbahce player invaded before the kick but also Frankfurt player did. LOTG says if two teams make an offence penalty kick will be retaken.

      Delete
    2. LOTG and VAR protocol are not the same thing.

      Delete
    3. First situation: Player is clearly in line of vision in my opinion. The question I have is if it's really offside? Impossible to say without calibrated lines from VAR.

Second situation: Penalty should have been retaken in my opinion. Encroachment by defending and attacking players.

      Delete
    4. I might be wrong, but I believe (to put it simple) that for VAR only players that later influenced the game are relevant. Besides, only feet are relevant for restart/fk/pk encroachment, so I would say that only defenders 37 and 13 could be inside, but they do not influence anything.

      Completely correct VAR intervention IMO.

      Delete
    5. I believe the same as Forlan, but struggle to find the source.

      Delete
    6. You are correct, Forlan. VAR will only get involved if the encroachment is by someone who becomes directly involved in play.

In my opinion, this point in the VAR protocol is there to ensure that VAR is only used if it is really necessary. But if VAR has the opportunity to review, then surely the correct decision must be made at the end, right?

      Delete
    7. Philipp, it's in the glossary at the end of the LOTG

Restart position: A player's position at a restart is determined by the position of their feet or any part of their body which is touching the ground, except as oulined in Law 11 - Offside.

      Delete
    8. Thanks, that's what I meant.
So it's not even only VAR, but in general: The position at a restart is the position of the feet.
So it's not that clear in the picture of yesterday's game.

      Delete
    9. About the second situation, indeed VAR can only start a review when one of the offending players becomes involved after the penalty has been taken. But once a review has been started, a completely correct outcome should be produced. So in this case the review is started because of the attacker encroaching, but once started the review, the defenders should be considered as well.
Then the question remains whether or not one or more of the defenders is/are inside the penalty area at the moment the penalty is taken (at least one foot inside or on the line of the penalty area). I couldn’t see that in the picture above.

      Delete
    10. LOTG and VAR protocol are not the same i get that. VAR should have intervened after goal because the attacking player invaded before the kick. But the law says if both team players invaded retake the penalty, that is so simple. The only tricky point here of VAR, they had the key point of intervention because the invaded player made the goal.

      Delete

  34. After watching a great game Betis-Celtic, my impressions about Jovic and his team:

Good performance by Jovic in dynamic but not too difficult game. Apart from wrongly annuled goal (hard to see, it could seem that there was a handball), it is hard to find major mistake. Pk correct, consistent lenient criteria, mandatory YC issued correctly, ARs with 2 correct important decisions, especially onside before a goal for 2-2 was very tight. Few YC for dissent in 1H absolutely correct.

Potential 2nd YC mentioned above - SPA + (reasonable) advantage given = no caution, IMO correct.

"loss of control" mentioned above- natural nervous reactions of Betis players after loosing 0:2 at home early. No problems in general.
