  1. A nice match for Erik Lambrechts.

  2. Kruashvili: after YL on the first set (MD1 and MD2) he got now ECL.
Definitely among the best games of this round, but still no Europa League for him, after the great summer he had. Something maybe has happened, I expected a different treatment for him, but surely he has time as Category 2 referee.
Then, some words must be spent for Madden: a quite regular CL referee on past seasons but now two ECL assignments in this season. An extremely radical change for the Scottish. Very particular. With Collum out for injury at moment, no Scottish referees at the top.
Aghayev seems to have been totally forgotten by committee, focus on him for some reasons is over.
Stéphanie Frappart after a quite good EL game, with mostly supportable and good decisions, gets ECL.
For the Italian team, AS Roma, a well-known name, we should also say something about Palabiyik, he looked to be in a good path as well with CL debut, but then something changed.
For some referees it is definitely impossible to analyze their path.
Last but not least (and maybe I should have mentioned him before all the rest), excellent game for Osmers, with Tottenham playing in the Netherlands, as the most sonorous game of the round in my opinion, along with the already mentioned Feyenoord - Union Berlin.

    1. For Ali Palabiyik, he is not performing well this year in Turkish Super League as well. He made critical mistakes 2 matchday before and he will not be assigned for 4 games. This might be one of the reason that he is appointed to ECL. Maybe UEFA will use this as recovery period/path.
It seems from UEFA point of view Umut Meler is ahead of Palabiyik.
On the other hand Turkish Super League Teams are not happy with referees and refereeing committee. This week presidents of clubs, TFF President and Refereeing Committee president will meet and discuss.

    2. Also to underline - first UEFA game at all for Vad since 2019(!) since they roasted him internally for only booking a Gibraltar player who pushed him in their WCQ in Denmark.

Stunning that Vad got NOTHING, including qualifiers, after that until now... I guess they will demote him and this is maybe a final test to potentially 'save himself' or even a final present before inevitable relegation.

    3. Thanks Marrkoo, yes I see now that Vad has been very on-and-off with injury, a few insets and then a long stop again and so on. So maybe not such a bad signal as I initially thought; nice for him to back on a UEFA fixture!

  3. Erik Lambrechts for sure now been considered as second best Belgian UEFA referee after Visser. The AR's from Visser are used whenever possible by Lambrechts too. They should develop in my opinion 2 sets of good VAR's for Belgian international arbitration. Moreover strange that Visser did not get a match after his first CL appearance in Madrid.

    1. Why strange? Visser was quite bad in Madrid.

    2. I don't think Visser was bad.

In general, it was the Belgian ref as we know him - very good, tactically proficient, decision taking, combined with a weak manner / lack of natural authority.

The two penalty box situations in quick succession were both very tricky, but according to big picture refereeing, I think the (video) officials solved them sensibly.

Visser will obviously get appointed in the fourth round of games a fortnight from now, and we can judge from him being in CL or EL then.

  4. Not Spanish ref´s yet appointed in ECL. I was expecting opportunities for Munuera Montero, who has not the trust of UEFA committee, as he´s only appointed as 4th official in UEFA competitions...

  5. Sorry for offtop, but why doesn't Vladislav Bezborodov get a game for almost two years?

  6. I hope that one of the Cat 1 or even a Cat 2 referee gets a shot at the final. I would hate the tournament to be refereed by Cat 1 and the odd 2 only for elite level referees to come into the latter stages. A tournament very good for the exposure of referees needing European experience as well as the clubs

    1. Good point and I'm very curious about that as well. So far with Rosetti we saw many changes in terms of categories, most of the past rules have been broken, but nothing regarding the big finals, always officiated by Elite referees. We will see whether something like a Category 1 or even 2 will get this game, I think there are chances, but at the same time in reality I expect still an Elite referee.

    2. Would it not depend on the teams? Say that it will be Tottenham - AS Roma. I'd find it hard to imagine without an elite referee. On the other hand, it Would be a great chance for say, Jug or so. But is it also not a bit unfair to let elite referee end without final in their career, and do give it to a first group?

  7. Sending-off of FCK keeper for handling outside of the area. I have my doubts but would like to watch a replay.

    2. The raised arm above the shoulder makes it an expected foul and red, however there was no position he could have his arm where the ball wouldn't have struck it.

    3. If that is the case, CWY, it sounds like there is a case for “no handball” here?

I have my doubts about the infringement itself. He does spread his arms wide initially, which gives me very little sympathy, but by the time the ball hits them they seem to be (I think) within the body? And I’m not really convinced that this is deliberate either because there is so little time to react.

As for the red card, we’ll even if it’s a handball I don’t see how you get DOGSO or DOG out of this. For DOGSO, likelihood of control of the ball is obviously missing with the ball kicked so far away, and for DOG, we have a better angle than any of the refs here and I can’t say that the ball is obviously going into the goal.

I know that “goalkeeper handball outside the box!” can be really tempting, and laymen expect a red card here, but I don’t think that’s correct. We don’t have the requisite elements of DOGSO or denial of an obvious goal here; if this is a handball I would have only yellow here. IMO red card is clearly wrong here and I’m quite surprised this didn’t go to an on-field review.

    4. Edit: ignore my comment about on field review, as VAR isn’t present here.

    1. I didn't watch game.
      Newspapers report:
9' and 28' good calls by ARs
      33' correct YC
37' wrong YC, not even foul
69' wrong corner (ball already out before last touch)
90'+1 correct play on, not punishable handball
