  1. I didn’t like Siebert, but of course Rosetti gave him a top clash, again. Brych is a safe pair of hands, whilst Kovács, Jovanović and Vincic get a match they can all handle.
Makkelie in Milan will have a busy match: correct choice to appoint the Dutch here.
Top clash for Guida: didn’t expect him, I expected Massa, and not in a big game: the committee now has him in focus.
Gíl Manzano in front of a committee member: Possible demotion or something bigger?

  2. IMO poor game for Makkelie but after last season completly deservedly, interested to see Siebert with big game again, I m sure he will be new Elite referee when Brych will retire, Interested match for Guida, last season in This two matches PSg-Leipzig we had 2 Elite referees

    1. I think Siebert will be one of best inside 2 - 3 years.

    2. Considering the current standings, Makkelie's game is an absolute top clash: Sheriff Tiraspol has 6 points, Internazionale Milano just 1. Meaning that even in the case of a home win against the Moldovans the Italians will stay behind them.

    3. Ok, but it s not a game for Elite referee

  3. Very good appointments for First group referees Guida, Jovanovic and - as usually - Siebert.
So apparently UEFA continues to test them resp. prepare them for a promotion to Elite.
The two Italian teams indeed with top referees after recent problems.
Gil Manzano with another good appointment after Juve-Chelsea and even with a top observer. Seems like he is making a comeback in the fight for Spain's number 1 spot.

  4. I couldn't expect a different name in Porto than Brych, considering all what happened before, there weren't other names, unless committee wanted to ignore the protests against Cakir by Milan. As expected, Makkelie back with Italian teams as well and I must say it is a good choice by committee in this game, it became very, very important for the group after the wins by Moldovan team.
Siebert continues with the top clashes and he is surely setting a record, as Category 1 referee with the most of big assignments, never happened before. Now he will join the maximum UEFA level and he will be immediately candidate for a final, one could say.
Regarding the Italian assignment, I didn't expect Guida but Massa.
Good game in Paris, but in my opinion the committee still sees this game as an expected win by French team. The German team is not at same level, but surely one can say a bit more than a "standard" appointment.
Based on recent assignments, it seems to me that Jovanović is among the first candidates for a promotion to Elite, big trust by committee, I must say sometimes his performances have been not the best, but surely he is better than other candidates for Elite, and I would even say by far. Hot game in Ukraine, after the unexpected loss by Real Madrid, big assignment.
Kovacs and Vincic are normal assignments, we should understand then why Dallas will be in Amsterdam for Gil Manzano. An important game for the Spanish.

    1. About Massa: I watched him in KAZBIH last Saturday, to be honest his performance was rather okay/fine but not more than that, with some clear yellow cards missed on a perception level etc.

I missed the 'extreme' concentration which he needs to succeed in his games with his quite charisma-less style, and thought it was more by fortune than skill that this game didn't get away from him a bit.

To be fair, it was 'only' Kazakhstan vs. Bosnia, and such clashes have pretty little relevance to top CL/EL matches. But I hoped for a bit more from this potential Elite candidate, I must be honest.

What is his form like since returning to Serie A, Chefren (or others!)?

    2. You are for or against, but Siebert will get the same 'UEFA treatment' as Makkelie.
We had Kuipers - Makkelie, and now for a while Brych - Siebert. Next year Siebert - ? for Germany.

      Delete
    3. Mikael, I didn't watch the game KAZ - BIH, but what you are describing seems to be the "classic" Massa I know, a good referee but very often missing in something more. The perception is that in case a game becomes hot, he could risk to lose it. Most of the times he ends without troubles, but when he was in challenging contexts he struggled many times. Technically I think he is a bit better than Guida, but I think he is missing in something that the latter has: the communication with players, maybe a bit of personality and some other skills.
Regarding physical condition, Massa is by far better, you described exactly the main problem of Guida, most of the times afraid of taking a sprint, and this doesn't help.
For all these reasons, I'm not convinced about a promotion to Elite, both have different arguments against them... we will see what will happen in future.

  5. My guess is: Siebert still needs to prove himself in big clashed therefore logical appointment.

Brych and Makkelie with Italian teams were already predicted by @Chefren and some readers, based on the commotion in Italian press after the first matchdays. It is predictable, but as some of us mentioned, it is almost a shame that noise is rewarded :D

    ReplyDelete
  6. As expected, Brych in Porto. I don't think committee really had another choice there after what happened. I also think Siebert in Madrid is a logical appointment given his current standing. I didn't expect Guida in Paris; let's see how he does.
Makkelie expected given the standings in that group; good game for Jovanovic. Maybe a possible promotion soon?
Standard appointments for Kovacs, Vincic and Manzano.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, Lasse Koslowski isn't a FIFA AR, right? Is Jan Seidel injured?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Another top clash for Siebert. This time with Lasse Koslowski (non-FIFA) as AR2. It seems as his regular AR Jan Seidel is again (or still?) injured.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It really looks like Seidel is out for an (to me) unknown reason. Siebert was in Leipzig in Saturday and his assistants were Koslowski (normal) and Jonas Weickenmeier.

  8. My thoughts:

    - quite a nice appointment for Kovács, will be quite intense atmosphere in Bruges I think (sth like the Feyenoord vs. Man City game for Marciniak with lots of potential SFPs); Romanian was VERY good in Shakhtar vs. Inter, too

    - expected appointment for Vinčić, 'classic' game for him, more intense than top quality football

    - WOW, I didn't expect Guida at all! I would say that this fits into the article I wrote last year... to be fair, I think the Italian is a very intelligent referee with great football understanding, but he struggles with fitness so sticks in the middle of the FoP and 'cuts corners' a bit; I wish him well!

    - excellently predicted and read by Chefren, Brych in Oporto, can't add more :)

    - UEFA didn't take my advice regarding Siebert :D he again looked comfortable in his previous top assignment, BELFRA, even if his performance was not 100% 'top' this time; I hope they don't burn him out for nothing, even if he absolutely has the level for Atlético Madrid vs. Liverpool generally speaking

    - how to read Dallas with Gil Manzano... given that Rizzoli had Bastien during the internationals, JMSM had a CL debut and AHH got top observers and appointments in recent times, in addition to (IMO) showing in Juventus vs. Chelsea that he has not made the necessary progress since his promotion three years ago, the ultra-fit Spaniard might be a bit worried as I see it…

    - Makkelie’s appointments since the EURO have been a bit… indifferent? I know Sheriff are top of the group and Inter are under pressure on one point, but it just feels a bit ‘weird’ that they keep him away from top, top assignments, and use him more (also in WCQ) for not-that-in-focus-but-potentially-problematic games; one to watch as the season goes on

    - I need to watch ITABEL from last Sunday, which I haven’t gotten round to yet; I am not really sure where Jovanović really ‘is’ at the moment, to me, he feels a bit out of form, losing the feel for his games to succeed with his mostly lenient, more distant style, and now he has this really big game… to be honest, I don’t like this sensation that everything, who is pushed etc., is too arbitrary under Rosetti, and performances/esp. development is not so important as it IMO should be

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Great analysis as always! I'm strongly interested in your opinion about Jovanović and his progress. Watching ITA - BEL you will probably find a mixed-bag performance, where you can see both positive and negative arguments, but in my opinion he is mostly a good referee, committe has a trust in him and it seems he is on a good path for something more.

      Delete
    2. +1

      Great analysis!

Regarding Sheriff, I think this is, although logical, somewhat debatable appointment. It looks a bit like the committee wants to be sure that Inter is in safe hands, because Inter or Real being knocked out would be a (financial) scandal.

Regarding Jovanović, absolutely he hasnt showed enough quality for elite group lately. Maybe it is just temporary, because he showed certain capacity before (EURO U21, for example), but still too many discussions and questions after his games...

  9. A few notes about the VAR appointments. Vincic with Jug as a VAR in the Champions League, before he only got foreign VAR's; very good development! The number of Italian and German (and Spanish/Dutch) VAR's is way too high.

San as AVAR for Kovacs should suggest that Scharer has a match on Wednesday. We should also see at least one English referee based on the AVAR appointments (maybe Oliver and Taylor in group G?)

Blom is out as VAR of Makkelie this round, this should be a punishment for the last matchday. Good to see Kamphuis back in action.

  12. Is it normal for Spanish refs to have 2 games in 48 hours? Today at 21:00 Barcelona - Valencia for Gil Manzano and Tuesday at 21:00 Ajax - Dortmund already

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, indeed we talked about that several times on this blog, RFEF seems to be the only federation allowing that, referees appointed in both domestic competitions and international stage twice in less than 2 days, in my opinion it is a very poor management, because the referee will miss a physiological recovery time between two games.

      Delete
    2. Indeed. Imo the UEFA must act in here

      Delete
  13. Apparently Nations League performances don’t influence appointments here. Both Siebert and Jovanovic rather unconvincing but they definitely are pushed!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Too short time to think that these appointments were made after Nations League games. Unless extremely poor performances, I think it is fair to get appointments at least for a set of games, even more in case of a not too long time between the matches. Then, committe can draw certain conclusions after that.

  14. Juventus - Roma. Orsato whistles penalty and moment after that, the goal has been scored, and then penalty is not scored. I think, Orsato will be criticisied for that early whistle.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And in addition to that AR1 with a wrong offside flag, he didn't realize that ball came from a defender so deliberate play and no offside. At least this mistake was "overruled" by VAR, but nothing to do with the early whistle by Orsato, so no goal and penalty. The penalty was then missed...
When you are so close to goal line, you should ALWAYS wait one second or two, in this case we had two hurry decisions: offside AR1, before the end of action, and whistle for penalty by Orsato.

      Delete
    2. https://streamja.com/V3aAe

Yeah, looks like a bit of a mess indeed. Maybe Orsato can be "saved" by Mkhitaryan's handball. Obviously, you would need to assess it as deliberate which I can't really comment on based on the replay tbh.

      Delete
    3. Maybe VAR could have helped by recommending a retake? Chiellini is already in the penalty area at the moment of the kick and then clears the ball.

      Delete
    4. Orsato is always reluctant in admitting his mistakes, he said to a player from AS Roma, explaining his decision, that "there is never a possible advantage on a whistled penalty...".
      Well, that's wrong of course.

      Delete
    5. @chefren I think First of all, I don’t think Orsato followed the flag, I watched the match and he immediately brought out his yellow card to give the goal keeper and never rescinded it even when supposedly a flag was raised, and to @philip, it was a goal kick that was given which means it was a Roma player that played the ball only if chellini played it of the Roma player.

I’m a level one referee in my country. We have VAR in our league. Unfortunately, I’ve missed the only VAR course that our FA organized two years ago. They have issues now and cannot organize another one for the foreseeable future.

Is there a website or anyone that knows if any country is having a VAR course for referees. My FA are willing to get in touch in order to send me.

Any information would be really helpful. Thank you.

  17. 1-1 by Beşiktaş: attacker jumped on defender before scoring, VAR shouldn't intervene but for sure a foul that Vincic could have whistled.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Not the best half for Kovács and his team, wrongly booked Laporte (it was a clear dive by Club Brugge player), wrong offside call when City player was onside.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Mixed performance by Kovacs so far. Good YC earlier for shoulder into De Silva's face, but missed foul at 26" when Brugge player was hit hard in back as Man City player went through him to get the ball. Then YC at 32" minute for tactical foul on Brugge player on breakaway but contact not clear. Would have to see replay.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree. Mistake at Laporte's YC, it was not foult. The YCs for home team both correct. I support the 32' decision. Also 1 wrong offside by AR2, the rest of them seemed to be correct. It is a pretty difficult game, a lot of contacts and Bruge's defending line is very high so a lot of offside situations. Mixed is the best word tobdescribe Kovacs performance in first half.

Extremely tight offside, very difficult for AR1.

  22. Solid 2nd half by Kovacs. Good foult detection and correct YC. Anyway, per toatal, several mistakes by AR2, wrong corner(changed decision by Kovacs), 2-3 wrong offsides and insecure sensation. But, in compansation, sensational performance by AR1, without any mistake. IMO, he is the best AR from Roamania and today Vasile Marinescu was just perfect. The 5th goal onside was pretty difficult to spot but he managed to do it correctly. Alos, corect offsides and throw-ins during the whole game. I`d say that overall it was a good performance by Kovacs, maybe 2-3 fouls misses during first half and a clear mistake free kick for Brugge (+wrong YC) Laporte). But really good 2nd half. Also good disciplinary management. The difference between teams was obvious, nothing to add more.

    1. For me, and I believe at least 95% of football fans this rule is ridiculous, rather stupid. The defender wouldn't play the ball if the attacker wasn't behind him, and Benzema was offside. So he indirectly influenced the defender to react. Similar situation with the one in France-Spain. This rule should be changed immediately.

      Delete
    2. Yeah because if Benzema's not there he obviously tries to clear the ball like that and doesn't let it run through to the goalkeeper...

How can anyone think Benzema hasn't influenced how the defender has tried to deal with that?!

      Delete
    3. Because there was no influence in the way the LotG mean it. Benzema didn‘t challenge his opponent, therefore - similar to the scene in the NL final - no offside according to present rules.

It's not that Brych's performance is good today. Far from that to be honest. He is still able to somehow control the players (i.e. that they don't get completely furious) but the number of sometimes weird and sometimes simply incorrect play-on calls is staggering, even knowing his style of officiating.

03' play-on call after challenge by MIL player in a SPA scenario and YC 27POR for SPA; no replay of the former scene shown by broadcaster.

Same action as 3rd goal from Liverpool against Atletico which caused PK scored by Salah. Remember also Cakir giving PK to Atletico after Atletico player pushed the ball with his hand on AC Milan’s defender’s hand which cost Milan the defeat, not easy to stay calm after 2 big mistakes which led to 0 points (and +2 to both Atletico and Porto). 1. If you enter in this field, removing soft penalties due to attackers behavior, you should intervene in too many situations... and it becomes very difficult to find objective criteria.

      Delete
    2. That‘s a good argument. The problem is in real time it‘s extremely difficult for a referee to decide if a contact is enough or not. But also for VAR to determine if he should intervene or not gets impossible then, you are right.

  60. Easy game for Gil Manzano but he could not convince me. In particular his card selection should improve. Also missed some quite blatant fouls. KMI's (No penalty call and possible DOGSO) were all correctly handled.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I watched alternative the games from Paris and Madrid. I liked Siebert tonight. On the other hand Guida seemed to have a hat too big for him. I have not seen any of Porto - AC Milan but as I see here this was not Brych`s best night. Total silence at Milano, I guess Makkelie had no problems.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I really understand the debate here about the OFR in Madrid. It was a soft call, but there was a light push. I doubt that this was causing the fall but that's not what I wanted to say. Chiagozie mentioned it above and I think he is right: In my opinion the VAR intervention was for "wrong perception". Siebert was hesitating with the call and whistled the penalty with some delay, he immediately signaled that VAR has to and will check. I am quite sure that Siebert and/or Foltyn thought there was a contact with the attacker's feet or leg, which is not absurd considering the falling movement. However, VAR could not confirm such a contact and probably told him that there was no contact with the foot but only a slight push in the back which could be not enough for a penalty.

So, without considering the perception and communication of Siebert and Dankert, the VAR intervention would be rather wrong. If it is a case of wrong perception, I'd support the intervention. Independent of this, the no penalty decision after OFR is the "better decision".

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Besides all that, I personally saw a strong Siebert being ready for the match. Trying to solve most things with communication, then the "unlucky start" with the correct RC (we have to praise that he immediately showed the RC without any VAR support) and the penalty decision. The YC for Milner was rather wrong, but understandable considering the context (penalty decision some minutes before, foul in front of the bench). The decision to take back the penalty is debatable (see above), but for me the "better decision". AR2 with some good no offside calls.
So overall, a (very) good impression by Siebert showing that he is able to be in charge of big matches, showing that he does not hesitate to take inconvenient decisions against the home team.

      Delete
    2. The perception of referee regarding an incident, that can allow or not the intervention by VAR, in my opinion is a dangerous argument. Thhis would justify every call. I think we should always try to stay at what happens on the pitch. If the incident itself is something that allows VAR to take a certain decision, this should be enough. Otherwise you can intervene for removing a penalty when you have the chance to confirm it.
Also, I would say, I'm not sure that all VARs from all countries act in this way, I would rather say that in Italy this is never used, while indeed I remember that for Germany it was reported by some people in past for some incidents.
But again, if we add what referee saw to what happened on the pitch, the assessment becomes difficult and we make things even more complicated, that's my opinion. VAR process wouldn't be clear.

      Delete
  63. Bad image to see:
    a) Ibrahimovic with only YC after studs-head challenge
    b) Brych smiling and joking with Ibrahimović afterwards.

Safety of the players, blah, blah, blah unless UEFA deem it as another mistake by referee and VAR like with del Cerro and De Bruyne.

Furthermore, two controversial incidents involving the assessment of charging. Possible foul before 1:0 goal and penalty incident - play-on at 80' after similar challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  64. IMO Dankert's intervention against Siebert's last PK-call was absolutely right, because the attacker jumped into the defender for getting a PK, it was a diver, and he could have seen YC for that IMO, a PK would have been incorrect, so Dankert called Siebert to review and he changed his opinion after seeing the pics. Well done - all in all Siebert brave as always, with some really challenging situations, he did nearly everything right and never lost control. He still is on a vefy, very convincing way to the Top and to WC, too. All whats missing is a bit more selfconfidence and natural authority, but this "aura" will come with more ecperience. Germany has the luck of a great number if refs officiating on a really high level at the moment, with Petersen the next big talent following.

    ReplyDelete
  65. What do everyone think about the first goal scored by atletico Madrid? I think the goal should have been ruled out because the Liverpool player would have played the ball in the absence of the Attacking player in an offside position.

    1. Agree VAR at least should have invited Siebert to watch it again. Overall tough match for Siebert, some contentious decisions yes but I liked his confidence, he never allowed the crowd to influence things.

    2. It's 100% offside per the way we are supposed to interpret Law 11. The attacker is either challenging Matip by being in close proximity or he's made an obvious action that impacted Matip. He's perhaps guilty on both counts. Kind of shocked this goal stood.

      Delete
  66. I don't understand the red card for Atletico. Yes, the leg is very high which is dangerous, but player's intension was obviously to play the ball and point of contact was light-medium intensity. I have seen plenty of similar situations being punished with YC. As someone mentioned earlier, the challenge by Ibrahimovic' was harsher, punished with YC by Brych. Ref's are apparantly not on one line. Unity is missing.

I like Siebert his style and his future is bright, but can someone explain me why he is pushed SO much? It is good to test him and I understand that Germany is looking for Brych's successor, but right now it is clash-after-clash-after-clash, before he even whistled a KO game in Champions League. Why? A clear built-up is missing. He should earn these kind of 'big games'.

    1. Indeed, his push is without precedent, not even Makkelie enjoyes such treatment. But as long as he can handle this games, the fans don't protest. We are almost in the middle of a transition between generations. Lahoz, Cakir, Orsato and Brych will soon retire and Rosetti is looking for theirs substitutions. Obvious, from January he will be promoted to Elite. About the red card, come on, it is clear. For me foot on the face is red card no matter what.

      Delete
    2. And still, I doubt if (for example) Brych or Kuipers would have issued the straight RC.

Nowadays in advanced stages of UEFA tournements we see top refs who can bend the LOTG, for the sake of the game.
Great managers who can read and feel the game.

It is a very dangerous challenge by Griezmann for sure, but I have the perception that a straight red card must be very obvious and not debatable. No intention to play the ball and more than a medium contact seems to be required. Another example is DOGSO+.
I don't say it this should be our taste :) Let's see how UEFA decides.

      Delete
    3. Even if the contact is light-medium, it is potentially dangerous, so a RC is meant to prevent future actions that are positively dangerous.

      Delete
    4. hmm interesting. If you don't think getting straight leg kicked in the head is a red card than what is. As for your argument that other Elite referee's wouldn't give a red card for this I suggest you watch Clement Turpin's red card for Thomas Muller in the champions league.

      Delete
    5. IMO you can't compare (the intensity of) Müller's challenge with Griezmann's.

Müller was a much harsher challange. RC is not debatable. The point of contact is much more 'intens' than Griezmann's. Also Müller could clearly see his opponent and took a very big risk.
I don't think Griezmann actually saw his opponent coming. A bit more unlucky. That's why I think that some elite refs would issue a yellow, based on the player's intention and intensity of the contact.

But let's agree to disagree :)
