  1. I start with Turpin in Barcelona, easy to understand that in this case committee made the appointment based on recent performances by the Spanish team and this game can be absolutely open to all results, so we have a big name. Good appointment for his countryman in London for Chelsea - Malmoe as well. Here, it is particular to have Millot as AVAR and Hernández Hernández as VAR.
Marciniak absolutely expected in Manchester, he is in a very good form and he gets a great game, and, as expected a Category 1 in Russia for Zenit - Juventus. It is definitely easy to understand how committee assess the games with Italian teams and the relative appointments!
The rest is normal, two big names, Oliver and Orsato, in a fully open group!

    1. You predicted the appointments of Italian teams very well! :)

  2. I feel like this time all appointments are rather expected/normal. No big surprises.
I'm glad to see Letexier again, I really liked him in YB-MUN. Am I missing something or is there any particular reason to have Hernández Hernández as VAR and Millot only as AVAR?

    1. IMO, Turpin and Orsato and to a lesser extent also Karasev and Oliver are surprising appointments, because in all games also a less prominent name seemed possible.
I mean, group G is quite open, but we are not yet on the last matchdays and those are rather small teams involved.
But apparently UEFA wanted to play it safe after some controversies in the last matchday, e.g. also with the penalty against Wolfsburg.

However it means, that 10 EURO referees (+ the CA referee and Marciniak) have already been used on MD3, so only 6 EURO referees remain (assuming Grinfeld still out) for MD4 under normal circumstances.

      Delete
    2. Dear Philipp :as you know, there are no "normal circumstances" anymore since Rosetti. So, a lot of the same referees will be used again on MD4 in my opinion. I wonder by the way if Cakir isn't near the exit : he gets 45 y. in November and he isn't part of the UEFA pre WC 2022 Quatar group. Is Cakir stopping due to age restraints (considering that, theoretically, he could move on cfr Kuipers who left the scene at 48) or because he has to by UEFA ?

  3. IMO the strongest games are for Hațegan, Marciniak and Schärer.

  4. Bastien could definitely be worried now

    1. Sorry to be Honest He shouldnt be in Elite :)

    2. I don't think that Letexier appointment strictly implies the fact that Bastien must be worried. For a country like France, three referees in Champions League (2 Elite + 1 Category 1) is the minimum we can expect. Buquet is surely now the man of out focus mostly to age, but the rest must be still decided.
I'm curious about the next assignment for Bastien, though, given that he can appear in CL on MD4, I think he will get rather Europa League. We will see.

    3. All right thanks for your answer Chefren !
      About Buquet, agreed

Marciniak will be a ref at the Arab Cup 2021 in Qatar (30 November - 18 December)

  8. Michael Oliver officiated his 300th Premier League matches this weekend at the age of 36. He is on course to break the record of most matches officiated by an English Referee. To put into context how incredible his numbers are, Danielle Orsato officiated his 248th Seria A match also this weekend….

    1. Who is the PL referee with more match refereed?

      Delete
    2. Mike Dean has 541 matches and still adding on, so Oliver will need at least 8 years to reach that.
Also Atkinson, Marriner, Poll an Dowd have more than 300 matches.

You can't really compare Premier League with other leagues, because elsewhere the referees mostly are appointed only every second matchday, while PL referees can collect around 30 games per season.
So maybe Dean even has the world record of most top division matches? Does anyone know?

      Delete
    3. You are right but, none of them reached the 300 Milestone at that young age, that’s why he is touted to surpass them, if everything goes to plan because of course anything can happen, and I realized that Oliver has officiated only 5 championship matches… that is really shocking 😂😂. They are only a hand few of FIFA referees in England who do not officiate the second division matches.

      Delete
    4. Yes, I didn't want to disagree, but answer refplus' question.

worldfootball.net has 54 Championsship matches (since 2008) for Oliver though - in the two seasons before his PL promotion, he regularly officiated there, as one would expect.

      Delete
  9. Roelof Luinge did 544 highest league matches in Holland. That is more than Dean.

Emmanouil Skoulas (UEFA, 3rd) announced his retirement from refereeing today. He wrote a letter blaming mostly Clattenburg and said that the whole situation in Greece is the basic reason for his decision.

    1. So today's Maccabi Haifa-Zalgiris from UYL was his last match? Wow.

All my support to Greek referees!

      Delete
    2. Really sad for this choice. If a FIFA referee takes this decision, there should be very strong motivations behind, for sure. Particular that he made this announcement in the day of a UEFA duty.

      Delete
    3. All in Greece know there is no future for refereeing with Klattenberg in HFF. CRC is kontrolling by clubs.

  12. No problems for Turpin in BARDKV. Extremely boring game, even worse than many pre-season friendlies.

    1. Agree. Easy game for Turpin, who showed a good concentration during the whole game though. Any first category could have handled this game.

  13. Good onside by Listkiewicz for Atalanta goal :)

  14. Clear penalty to Chelsea whistled by Letexier, reckless and dangerous challenge.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would say, there are arguments for no foul (ball was played) and for SFP (quite dangerous action), but penalty+YC probably is the best decision.

      Delete
    2. I fully agree, it is indeed a very particular situation, I realized about the foul only after second replay, but it must be definitely punished.

      Delete
    3. Chefren, do you think the PK after OFR (92' PSG Leipzig) was 100% correct? Does it not matter in this instance that the ball is touched, because the ball is not played?

      Delete
  15. Correct PK and YC for DOGSO to Chelsea by Letexier.

  16. Does anyone know for English teams do they use the VAR hub at Stockley Park (EPL) or do they use the Nyon base.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you mean for CL games? UEFA games are covered either from Nyon or VAR at stadium, UEFA doesn't use national VAR hubs.

      Delete
    2. And they should be in Nyon as some of the appointed VARs had also matches yesterday.

      Delete
    3. I did wonder. I just thought it might have been easier to use the set up in SP but as phillipp said some had matches yesterday.

  17. Bayern scored by arm, should be disallowed afer VAR intervvention.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Still a bit of confusion when Hategan acts with VAR, it is evident that he isn't too much used with it. After the communication he made at first a wrong signal of goal allowed, indicating the midfield for a new kick off.

      Delete
    2. As I know, the 'new' rule says that a goal can't be scored with arm, of any kind. So I'd say correct VAR decision.

      Delete
    3. @Chefren In fact, he showed the place of the free kick not the centre of the pitch. He went there and then raise the hand. The same for second disallowed goal. He moved in the box than raised the hand. If someone need a video I can paste it.

    1. What did you think of possible push by #28 for Atalanta on #39 for Manchester United on the second goal (corner kick)?

      Delete
  19. Very calm game for Schärer in St. Petersburg. No penalty incidents or big decisions to make.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Marciniak having an excellent game so far, I believe he has got every decision right so far.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Good YC decision to N66 ATA by Marciniak now. SPA and not DOGSO.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What happend ? 2 YCs in 1 minutes

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don`t understand Hategan`s movement after VAR`s interventions. Now why he walked into the box to raise hand for offside? It`s unusual in comparation to other referees...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Another penalty to Chelsea, correct decision.
Maybe a missed YC to MAL2 though.
Also a possible foul in APP, but no replays were shown.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Apparently a YC was given.

      Delete
    2. Penalty was obviously the correct decision, but wasn’t this a DOGSO without an attempt to play the ball? I think so to be honest.

      Delete
    3. Well if there was a YC, my mistake, I simply missed it live.
RC for DOGSO would've been deemed as correct as well.
The more I watch the replays, the more I think it was actually a RC.

      Delete
    4. I also think, this a quite clear DOGSO.
And it was charging, not tripping, so it should result in a RC.

      Delete
    5. In my opinion clear RC for DOGSO, not genuine attempt to play ball. VAR should have intervened, I think supporting YC was a mistake.

  25. Anyone think Marciniak is a contender for the CL final? He is incredibly experienced even though his form has been questionable at times.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think if he will be in This form it s big chance for EL or CL final

      Delete
    2. For me, Taylor will get a final if an English team isn’t present. If an English team is present in the CL final, it should go to either Makkelie or Turpin and Taylor will do the EL. If an English team is also in the EL final, Marciniak could be the favorite for that one, but I think the 3 I mentioned are in front of him for the CL final.

      Delete
    3. After Super Cup and Nations League final, it is difficult to think that Taylor could get another final in a so short time, at least for this season, it would be too much in a too short time, I believe that committee will make different choices, we never saw a referee during the same season with 2 finals.

      Delete
    4. In that case Marciniak is definitely a contender for the EL final for me, but do you really think the committee would let an opportunity without English teams go, especially in the CL?

      Delete
    5. Yes I think so, there were similar situations with Mateu Lahoz, he had the chance to get CL final at least twice in past, it was unexpected that all Spanish teams had been eliminated, but he didn't get the game. So, now it is possible the same with Taylor, but mostly due to NL assignment in my opinion.
I agree that Marciniak is on a good path for being EL final candidate.
Let's also remember that we will have a third final this season, ECL final.

      Delete
    6. ECL Final is very difficult to predict right now. Does UEFA go with a referee who is just behind EL final referees (e.g. Hategan), talented referees (e.g. Siebert), referees who have no realistic chances on a more prestigious final (e.g. Sidiropoulos)? Maybe a female referee (Frappart) or even a ‘last honor’ (Cakir)? Probably quarter final assignments and onwards will tell us more about that, I would guess.

    1. He was great tonight. Lot of YCs in 2nd half (3 YCs for Atalanta from 55’ till 57’), all fully correct.

  27. Fantastic Marciniak tonight. Calm night for Turpin.

  28. I watched Barca-Kyiv and I must say, it was a very very boring game. The game never started to 'flow' and in my opinion also the ref (Turpin) contributed to that by applying a very low line of physical play. He whistled a lot, also for too small things in my taste. I noticed quite some dives from Kyiv players. The game was dead over and over again, which dissapointed me a little bit.

  29. José María Sánchez Martínez will handle the “El Clásico” between Barcelona and Real Madrid, on saturday at 16:15.
Cabañero Martínez and Gallego García will be his ARs whilst at the VAR, two formers like González González and Iglesias Villanueva.

Another confirm for the referee from Murcia.

    1. 18' Clearly correct IMO, dangerous tackle from behind, it shouldn't matter that the ball is slightly touched; I rather see some aspects of SFP fullfilled here with the attacker's leg bending, but Letexier's decision is surely the expected here.
55' Penalty again correct for me, clumsy push in the back - but indeed a RC is necessary here IMO, the action is in no way targeted at the ball. Mistake especially by Hernandez Hernandez here I think.

      Delete
    2. I agree with the consensus here, first one PK YC is the best decision,

second one VAR should have recomended an OFR for DOGSO.
