  1. No Blom as AVAR of van Boekel. Punishment for Wolfsburg- Sevilla??

  2. Wow, big appointment for Karasev. This can be very difficult game, I just hope he's ready for this task. Still doubt his management skills in a game like that, but this could be a good moment to prove it.

  4. Israeli High League

    Maccabi Haifa - Hapoel Beer-Sheva

Ref Leibovitz (UEFA 3rd) VAR Adler (very experienced ref, retired a year ago, never got a FIFA badge)

    https://youtu.be/zicjNQjo8fo

01:20 - disallowed goal due to offside
01:30 - PK, even after OFR the ref didn't change his decision.
    02:45 - RC after OFR.
06:13 - massive confrontation between the players, four YC's
    06:44 - PK+RC after OFR.
    08:10 - PK+RC.

    1. 1:30 - Nothing for VAR, I agree with the ref who stays with his decision
2:45 - Good intervention by the VAR IMO, RC
6:44 - correct intervention IMO, clear handball
      8:10 - easy decision

Leibovitz will be disappointed that he need VAR in two key incidents, but in the end the right decisions were taken IMO.

    2. 1:30 - VAR has tried to help as it’s a clear simulation. The attacker pushes leg into defender and falls over. Surprised he stuck with his decision.

Generally seemed very frantic / indisciplined from both teams.

    1. I think the German doctor will be appointed as a deserved last appointment

    3. Brych in Turkey today and then the final on Sunday ? Hardly

  6. I am genuinely not sure whether to be surprised by this appointment or not! (lack of precedence for NL final fours, status of Karasëv according to the committee, how seriously both teams will take this match, et al.)

In any case, a week after the last Italian trouble for UEFA referees (Çakır in the same stadium), for the second time this year, Karasëv is (surprisingly?) trusted by Rosetti to ensure nothing goes too wrong in an Italy game. At least for me, that's quite an interesting detail / subtext.

  7. The under 21 game for Ivana Martinčić (CRO), reported some weeks ago on this blog by Forlan (if I'm not wrong), will be Latvia - San Marino in 7 October in Riga.

    Referee
    Ivana Martinčić (CRO)

    Assistant referees
    Goran Pataki (CRO)
    Sanja Rodjak-Karšić (CRO)

    Fourth official
    Zdenko Lovric (CRO)

Very easy game (in theory) for start, I hope she performs well. Last week in 2nd divison she gave (debatable) two 2ndYC to one team with debatable management, but luckily for her the 9-man team won so not much discussion afterwards.

  10. Any chance Karasev will get CL final this year? I’m not too sure anyone else except Makkelie is ready.

    ReplyDelete

    1. He got Super Cup, difficult to get two finals in the same season, it never happened recently, however for sure he is at moment candidate for both EL and CL final on next years.

      Delete
    2. He is 42 so he has enought time left to get a CL or EL final. Surely a candidate. I remember that years ago there were some awards here on the blog. We could do it again. Karasev would get the Comeback of the year award from me. It is incredible, not many people would have foresee his boost after some mediocre years.

      Delete
    3. A CL final without English clubs and I think Taylor or Oliver would be considered ahead of Karasev. But of course its more likely that at least one English club will reach the final and then yes Makkelie, Karasev and probably Turpin are my candidates. Turpin didn't have the best Euro 2020 but in general he is very good.

      Delete
    4. Agree with anty75, Makkelie and Taylor are also my favorite for CL final. Turpin will take CL final in the future for sure (if maintain high level of performance). IMO Karasev is not the best option for CL final this season, next year probably

  11. So it is definitely full love by committee for Siebert, and he is considered even more than most of all Elite referees at moment.
Differently from previous edition, we will not see Brych, at the end of his career, getting this final, like it was for Undiano Mallenco.
Now to me looks quite clear that Taylor will handle it.
    We will see.

    1. Because it would make sense after having been forced to stop at EURO for England national team, then this is an occasion without English teams, he has already a certain age, so he could get this honor by committee, that's my view. In addition, in case of Italy in final, 100% perfect choice regarding the difficult management of Italian teams by committe.

      Delete
    2. Maybe, Siebert shall be made ready for the World Cup next year by appointing him for a couple of major clashes. Although having refereed at the EURO this year, one must say that he is still rather inexperienced with regard to top matches.

      Delete
    3. I don't think that Siebert's appointment can prevent Brych from having the NL final. After all Makkelie had the Euro SF and Kuipers did the final.

      Delete
    4. Exactly my point @greek ref!!! Chefren your logic might not be the case here as we saw at the Euros!! Siebert and Brych are treated independently irrespective of the fact that they are countrymen as was much of the case for Kuipers and Makkelie

    5. Well deserved for Siebert, and I hope he will be at the WC in Qatar.

  12. No - what a ridiculously absurd decision not to instantly promote the no.1 referee of the last EURO to the highest category.

Sorry but I really can't help but get the feeling Rosetti makes it up as he goes along way too often.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ridiculous appointment indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I have to agree with Mikael. The management of the categories is ridiculous but this appointment isn't.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Clearly, Siebert couldn't be promoted because then Germany would have had 5 Elite referees, that is not possible. They had to demote somebody, they couldn't do that. Now with Brych out and Siebert in problem will be solved. With hindsight, Stieler would have never been promoted, committee would have waited for Siebert. A very poor management, but still unknown why once promoted, referees mostly can't be demoted.

  18. Kuipers told what happened at Wembley before the final began: "I was warming up and Chiellini was doing it too. So he came to me shaking hands and he said: 'Bjorn good luck, we are very happy that you are here to referee the final, congratulations. 'So I took advantage of that moment to say to Chiellini:' Captain listen to me, don't come on me to put pressure , don't ask me to pull out stupid cards, because if I have to be strict, I'll be, so just focus on your game '… ".

Words that obviously can only be pronounced by a referee of great charisma and experience. Then he continued, explaining what happened at that point: "Chiellini resumed the warm-up and then went to the locker room. When he returned to the field, he said to me: 'Bjorn, I've talked to every single player, don't worry' … ". Obviously there was no special treatment for Italy, as Kuipers did the same for England: "I also spoke to their captain Harry Kane and I must say that all the players, both Italian and English, had great respect for each other and for me, so I have to congratulate the players and coaches. "

    1. Great anecdote, Chefren. Also, do you think a new section could be added to the blog for "Domestic Competitions" or even "Miscellaneous Matches." I wanted to write about the no YC during the Liverpool-Man City match the other day but hadn't a place to do it. And the latter page could be used for refereeing decisions in things like the Futsal World Cup and other types of competitions. Refereeing assignments wouldn't have to be listed, and each poster could identify the match at the beginning of the post. It would add some variety to the blog and perhaps increase postings. Please discuss with the other admin(s). Thanks.

  19. 5' Bernardeschi with a clear reckless challenge, Karasev decides to wait before booking.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I like Karasev's high line allowing very physical play, but challenge will be to keep control in intense and emotional match and not let players push the line too high.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Some issues a few minutes ago (minute 30'). At first I think Karasev didn't find the right moment to whistle a foul missing an advantage, but before that there was a possible foul for the opposite team. Then, after the missed advantage, he whistled a foul against Italy and I think it was very soft if not wrong, maybe he didn't see properly. Good that in this occasion he immediately booked a player for protest.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And now second YC for Bonucci: reckless use of elbow.
100% correct, but now protests because of the first YC.

      Delete
  22. 2nd yellow for the Italy captain. Elbow jumping leading with into an opponent.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Fantastic management of 2nd YC to Bonucci by Karasev! Very calm, clear, confident, perfect control of the situation!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Karasev already losing control completely. Now ruining the game because of two very soft YC’s to Bonucci. Proof he is definitely still way too lightweight for these type of matches. Hyped after some quite okay performances during Euros but he can’t hide his lack of personality now

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What are you talking about? Have you seen Cakir or Orsato with Italian teams lately? He has very good acceptance from the players. Moreover, 2nd YC absolutely supportable.

      Delete
    2. are you joking Marko33? delete your comment, pls

      Delete
    3. I don’t know ‘bout the comparison with other referees but my impression is that these YC’s could have been easily avoided by better management and better foul detection earlier on in the game. Maybe not wrong on itself and not smart by Bonucci but the ref plays a big part. Karasev as we knew him before Euros

      Delete
    4. The second YC is more than supportable for me. But yes, questions about the first one. So all in all maybe too harsh, do you think he was aware that it was a SYC when he took the YC in his hand?

      Delete
    5. You want him to manage players to not blatantly elbow the opponents? Get out of here with your lack of knowledge. He hasn't lost any control at all.

      Delete
    6. Dont "get out of here", its ok to disagree.

The point here is that in this type of refereeing, it is important to let the game flow and not so much technical precision. And I agree, a RC is partially a fail in that context, but he couldnt do much in that 2ndYC situation.

      Delete
    7. I'm italian, but the two YCs to Bonucci are more than deserved and the decisions of Karasev were perfect !!!!! A dissent is NEVER soft; Why an experienced player is so stupid to dissent continuously to be booked. I see more supportable the 1st YC than the 2nd. Dissent must never exist !!! and the 2nd is correct too because Bonucci jumped with the elbow up.
Very good performance by Karasev to me

      Delete
  25. Opinions on second YC? My first thoughts was it was unintentional and looked worse in slow motion

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unintentional is not a reason for NO CARD...

      Delete
    2. It is to me a very clear YC but in the perception of the game looks absolutely unexpected and soft because the same player had been booked very quickly by the Russian a few minutes ago.

      Delete
    3. I saw a few replays of elbow for second YC, and the problem is that one can't judge a foul by the reaction of the fouled player anymore because of acting and diving, etc. So one has to try to separate the foul or contact from the reaction, and here the reaction of the player is so extreme it perhaps colors one perception of the contact. YC is supportable though perhaps influenced by acting.

      Delete
    4. In my opinon you cant whistle that foul without a YC. Its a clear elbow...

      Delete
    5. 100% yellow card offence.

      Delete
    6. IMO 100% second yc but still i think that the 1st one followed a no-foul whistled

      Delete
  26. Just to clarify, I totally agree that it was a second YC, I just didn’t think it was intentional.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Second YC: https://streamwo.com/kPwluzG

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, same view at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hP-dcRsDGMg. I was wrong, it was definitely reckless and borderline serious foul play, but then one must wonder what was said to warrant the first YC.

      Delete
  28. Now Karasev in trouble for the control of the game, I think he deliberately wanted to avoid some cards in the last minutes, but now he has been forced to book again.
I think that the second YC is a correct decision, but indeed about the rest not the best performance by the Russian today. He failed in reading the game in some key moments. Not totally accepted by players.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This 2nd YC reminds me the RC in France-South Africa WC2010

    ReplyDelete
  30. And now a possible violent conduct by Spanish player moving the knee in face of opponent, who was lying down. VAR doesn't see this as RC.
One can have doubts, but surely nowadays with modern refereeing...

    ReplyDelete
  31. We don't know what was said so can't say whether 1YC was right or wrong. But 2YC is 100% right you can't blame Karasev for Bonucci's stupidity.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I won't be surprised to see a straight RC for that. It is supportable from my view

      Delete
  32. Now missed YC for a reckless elbow as well by Spanish side. I think he could't assess properly the foul.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Not so good Karasev tonight. Apart from the RC, i found him like… he had fair to decide

    ReplyDelete
  34. Some thoughts on Karasev's performance: first, I didn't realize it was the Nations League semi-final and that Italy was on a world record 37 game unbeaten streak, so this was a very big match. I didn't know much about Karasev, so I looked up some of his last matches at https://www.sportsmole.co.uk/people/Sergey-Karasev. I appreciate EUFA wanting to give opportunities to more referees in top matches, and Karasev's getting the EUFA Super Cup shows his rise in EUFA's eyes, though it was perhaps a little surprising to not see a usual suspect like Brych in the Italy-Spain match. That being said, I don't think Karasev had a bad match by any means, but refereeing often comes down to a few key minutes, and Chefren noted that perhaps he didn't read the game during them. His high line of allowing very physical play was perhaps a little risky with so much at stake in the match, since as we know it is hard to regain control once lost. Regarding the Bonucci YCs, I wanted to see how they were received in the media, and a Guardian reporter wrote, "Hmm, I can see why the referee gave him a second yellow but it feels a bit soft, especially as the first booking was for dissent." Now, the consensus here was that the second YC was entirely justified, but as was seen in the Liverpool-Man City game, some referees turn a blind eye to a second YC, which makes some expect all referees to do the same. In terms of the first YC for dissent, someone above wrote that because we don't know what was said, we don't know if it was right or wrong. And here perhaps brings into focus two different types of refereeing styles: the more by-the-book approach of a Cakir, which I myself prefer, or the more lenient style of a Brych. Now, everyone has their own preference, and each match calls for its own adjustments, but as we have perhaps seen by Cakir being sent home early in the Euros (many would say unfairly) and the criticism of his recent performance, perhaps there is a time to be by the book and a time to be more lenient, and knowing the difference is key. So, how does that apply to the first YC by Karasev? Well, I have to admit that I don't see many elite referees giving YCs for dissent. And this might be controversial, but I hate to admit that I've turned a deaf ear to many insults directed at me for the simple reason that giving YCs for dissent simply tells my assignor that one or more players didn't accept my decision(s), which I'd rather them not know. Now, of course, there are some words that are either inexcusable or that would lead to a general disrespect of the players towards a referee that cannot be tolerated, and perhaps Bonucci said something to another player, but perhaps if Karasev could have let Bonucci's dissent go with a stern warning, ("That's enough. Any more and it will be a yellow card," which brings to mind the brilliant pre-game warning Kuipers gave Chellini before the Euro final that Chefren noted above), it might have been beneficial to him and the match. Now, I am no refereeing expert, and I must admit I sometimes like to stir the pot to elicit lively conversation, so let's hear it!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Italian players (Club and National) start their protest before the referee's whistle. LOL.

    1. Thank you!
A short resume, I think 5' was a clear YC because tackle was very late and ball away, 13' a moment in which game could have escalated due to referee's approach, allowing too much and when he finally decided to whistle for the infringment by Spanish player this looked like another clear YC. At least in this case he tried to be consistent, without booking the Spanish.
28' another key moment, wrong timing in whistling, then after that in my opinion phantom foul, whistled without a real perception, and the YC to Bonucci. We can't question on that.
Then, the second YC, in my opnion correct, as said, but with all the situations occurred before... well.. referee could have acted more in prevention.
In second half, I think the action by Spanish player close to violent conduct (knee movement) could have been punished by RC, but rewatching it I understand why VAR didn't intervene. I'm curious about your opinion regarding this incident. The rest in second half in my opinion was quite problematic, but luckily nothing extra-ordinary happened. Overall I think we saw rather the "old" Karasev, missing in some soft skills he had shown in recent games, or maybe the recent games he handled had been by far easier than this one...

  49. I don't blame Siebert or Dingert / van Boekal at all, in their position I'd do the same thing, but - like SVKESP - that should never, ever be a penalty IMO (clear defensive freekick to be given).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the two situations are not very similiar. SVKESP the defender wants to clear the ball, doesn't see Koke coming from behind and Koke puts his foot in. Here, Griezmann is in a better position and Tielemans can see him all the way. In my oppinion, a defensive free kick is not an option here, as Griezmann has every right to put the foot where he put it.

What are your arguments for a defensive freekick?
I think you are consistent with your judgement, because I think I remember you saying, that Soucek fouled Wan-Bissaka (WHM vs. MU, PL) and not the other way around in the box.

      Delete
  50. I would have liked to have seen Griezmann get a YC for simulation. If he had no reaction, and contact didn't look significant, then OFR would probably not have been given.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I hope Siebert has the courage and confidance to keep his style of refereeing. he allowed a high amount of physical play so far and let the game flow, what I personally really liked.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think he will keep his style, because that's what makes him get such big games also in Germany. For example his refereeing of Bayern-Leipzig is always quite perfect, because you see a very fast, but also intense and fair game.

  57. Would Frappart be an option for third place game or not because of her VAR appointment in Andorra? It seems like the type of game for which UEFA likes to appoint female referees so far (low relevance, high exposure)

    1. You can be sure that Frappart will not be there because there is the French national team, appointments were made before, so all referees from all countries involved couldn't be called.

  58. Anybody watching USA vs Jamaica? It seems mr Reon Antonio Joshua from Grenada doesn't know DOGSO rule, 2 Jamaicans should be off already for such fouls but only YC were given. Unbelievable!

    1. It's VERY common in CONCACAF! The reason is that their head of referees, Brian Hall, doesn't want even the clearest red cards in CONCACAF games! I watched some games before the Gold Cup (Preliminaries and Champions League) and it was extremely shocking experience for anyone involved in refereeing. One can say that they don't use the LotG in CONCACAF.

30 seconds in and 2:30 in. The first decision is slightly more questionable consider the larger distance from goal though I would have still shown red. The second one to me seems quite obvious.
@anty75 more concerning is the management of the situation in both cases. Looks very unsure and lots of chaos.

    1. Hi ESR, what is your decision in 85' Witsel stands on the knee of Griezmann?

    2. Yes. SFP for me as he deliberately jumped in in such a manner. Most likely everybody missed it. Also the reaction of the fouled player didn't indicate that something bad happened. We know that Witsel could do the worst things when frustrated (Wasilewski).
