  1. Excellent appointment for the Polish.

Vincic as 4th offical is particular. I think we won't see him in a semi-final CL. He will be the final referee of the Europa league. The fact that Dallas will be in Villareal next week as observer subscribes that argument. I think we will see a very suprising name in Villareal. Category Jovanovic / Gozubuyuk or even Siebert.
I predict Turpin in Madrid next week.

    1. After the appointment yesterday (Kovacs after a good QF) I wouldnt be surprised to read Gozubuyuks name next week in VIL-LIV

    2. CL final 2022: Makkelie
Marciniak in a first leg SF means that he is the first back-up.

I bet he will be the fourth official in this year's CL final - and in pole position to get the 2023 CL final (together with Turpin!)

      Delete
    3. Yes. I think Chefren mention that last week? Messner in Liverpool suggest very experienced Elite (which was a correct assumption).

Dallas in Villareal will be a more unexperienced name :) Probably committee thinks that this game won't be very tight?

The 2nd leg in Madrid requires the most experienced name of the bunch. Normally Orsato, but if he is out - Turpin.

      Delete
    4. Yes, Jovanovic or Gozubuyuk may have been chosen for LIV-VIL, but I think the first leg would be more appropriate. In addition, Cakir may have been considered for this match, perhaps in order to prepare for the World Cup after his absence of 1.5 months.

      Delete
    5. I really don’t understand the Jovanovic / Gozubuyuk hype. Imo no chances whatsoever to see either of them in a CL semi, simply not good and not experienced enough at this moment in time.

      Delete
    6. I think the first leg in Liverpool vs Villarreal will be harder to referee than the second leg.

This will be the opposite in the other game, hence Turpin on the second leg most likely

      Delete
    7. I think this appointment means that Orsato is back.

      Delete
    8. @Anonymous 10:47 What’s the reason you think the 1st leg in Liverpool will be the more challenging? Usually the underdog playing at home is anticipated to be the most challenging?

      Delete
    9. @Matei14 What makes you think that? :)

I don't see Turpin in Villareal, because Dallas already observed him in QF.

      Delete
    10. Not sure, whether this is such an excellent appointment for Marciniak. IMO this is the smallest of the remaining 5 CL matches and it was quite expected that he gets one of them.

      Delete
    11. @Anonymous 11:19 Because, I don't think UEFA will take the risk to give a UCL second leg to Jovanovic / Gozubuyuk. You can't be sure that Liverpool will hammer Villarreal in the first leg. So I guess that Orsato announced Rosetti that he is available again. Otherwise, I rather see Siebert here, despite of the questionable performace in Atm-City, than the 2 names I wrote above. But again, my guess is that Orsato is back.

      Delete
    12. Why wouldnt Gozubuyuk be an option after a good CL QF... Kovacs got his SF too. I dont think it would be that deserved. However i am not excluding Gozubuyuk totally. The chances of seeing him are IMO much higher than seeing Orsato or Cakir

      Delete
    13. There is a big difference between Kovacs (great season, MCI-RMA in QF, BAR-NAP in EL R16), and Gozubuyuk (the easiest CL QF, not deserved at 100%).

      Delete
    14. Maybe Siebert in Villareal isn't a bad guess at all. That game would suit him much better than ATM-MCI (QF) imo.

      Delete
    15. I agree with MdN, Gozubuyuk had a good EL RO16 and was generously rewarded with a replacement appointment in Liverpool, while other referees who could have been taken into consideration were left out (Schärer, Letexier). Before even considering the Dutch for even a CL SF(!!) let’s first see how he will deal with really challenging matches.

  2. May be new elite referee in semi final in villareal such as kovacs in Manchester we will see next week

    ReplyDelete
  3. Reckon we could see Siebert or Zwayer in second leg of Villarreal Liverpool.

  4. Gozubuyuk will referee Feyenord-Olympic. Hahhaha

  5. I'm in trouble to think that Orsato could be appointed for a second leg, he is still out from serie A, not officiating a game in the last month. The forced option would be to see him in serie A for a game on next week end after more than 1 month of stop and then 2 days later CL semifinal. Not possible if you ask me... for sure Vincic, despite of this assignment as fourth official, should get a game in second leg, I don't find other options to be honest...

    2. What about Makkelie in Madrid, Siebert in Villarreal and Turpin on the Final?

      Delete
    3. @usaref Bjorn Kuipers was reported as observer in Madrid. I don't expect Makkelie there.

      Delete
  6. At the same time, with another big assignment such as CL semifinal, Marcinak at moment again candidate nr. 1 for EL final in case of good performance at Anfield. Waiting for the next step of Vincic...

    ReplyDelete
  7. In particular, I think that Cakir is not going to get any first leg. Instead, he occupies a little more minutes on the field. My prediction that they will give him a UECL match (ROM-LEI)

  8. Don't really get the love Zwayer gets in this blog all the time. He currently is Germany's number 4 or 5 at best, after (apart from Brych) Siebert, Aytekin, Stieler and, given the recent high profile appointments, Stegemann. I know UEFA sometimes evaluates this a bit differently but seriously nobody in his right mind would give Zwayer a match beyond group stage.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Love? Are you talking serious? Zwayer is one of the most hated here. Everyone criticzed him here, no one admire him here, difficult seeing someone prizing him.
Zwayer is current the number 2 of Germany, and he is more advanced then stieler and aytekin. He performs/performed very well on this season (in germany and uefa), passing thought the hate and death threats.
I don't know if you are seeing the matches I see. So please review your content.

      Delete
    2. Love, hate, everything depends on what you want to read with your eyes :) You are missing the neutral view, that is is a very important skill for a referee. I think that on this blog, Zwayer, like almost all the other referees, has received in the years both positive and negative comments, as it can happen.

      Delete
    3. Almost never see a positive comment of Zwayer here, Chefren.

      Delete
    4. Read again the discussion about Siebert in his last CL game.

      Delete
    5. That's why I put almost never see. When he backs of covid, everyone criticized his performance on LIV x POR.
When he was on such hard phase on uefa, everyone criticzed him.
Also, when he did very well on the group stage and on the knock- out phase I think just 3 4 people said good about him.
The true is everyone loves one and the other is fully criticzed.

  9. Predictions 2022
-UCL final: Makkelie (4th official: Marciniak)
    -UEL final: Vincic
    -UECL: del Cerro Grande
    -Supercup: Kovacs

    ReplyDelete
  10. Very good selection for Marciniak in LIV-VIL 1st leg. This match will suit his refereeing style and could set him up for a UEL Final appointment. Vinčić's appointment as 4th shows the lack of options by the committee and will most likely be given a UCL SF 2nd leg appointment next week.

    Remaining appointment predictions
    UCL SF 2nd leg
    RMA-MCI Turpin, VIL-LIV Vinčić

    Finals
    UCL: Makkelie
    UEL: Marciniak
    UECL: de Cerro Grande

  11. The fact that Vincic has the role of the 4th official in Liverpool on Wednesday excludes him from being appointed in the second leg in Villareal - that's my point of view. I also do not believe that he will handle Real - City, this will be for Turpin. So the clash VIL - LIV will have some other name in the middle - Siebert, Orsato,... ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. It is more “logical” to appoint a ref as 4th official who is in charge of, for instance, a 2nd leg Europa League on 5 May.

      Delete
  12. Makkelie has a game on friday. So no european appointment for him this weekend. Not even SF UEL/UECL.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In theory, he could be available for the game in Villareal next week, on Tuesday.

But last week he had a game on Friday as well, and it didn’t mean anything. Maybe it was a coincidence or reserve spot.

      Delete
    2. Gozubuyuk has a game on Sunday. At least he won’t be in Villareal. ;)
Makkelie in Villareal doesn’t make sense to me tbh. If they want to use him in a SF, I’d rather expect the other (bigger) game.

      Delete
    3. Gözübüyük: EL SF (first leg) this Thursday.
      Makkelie: Villarreal - Liverpool.

      Delete
    4. Yes indeed, a game on Friday is a good indicator for a (midweek) CL international assignment. On the other hand, a Friday game is also a well-known strategy to keep a ref in the shadow for a high-profile assignment the week after. The 8 May games (AZ-AJA / FEY-PSV) are very important for the standings.

Besides that, Makkelie whistles every week. Based on the 21-day rule, you can already exclude him on 6 games. The game on Friday involves two teams he didn’t whistle for like >8 weeks and its actually a very tight game and very important for European play-offs. However this argument doesn’t exclude him for CL, of course. But I’d say, logical appointment.

      Delete
    5. Appoint Makkelie in Villarreal Liverpool would be a risky, nonsense, bad management choice. They keep him away from stages in QF, and in SF 1st leg too. Why would they risk some trouble in a game where they can appoint Orsato (if recovered), Vincic, Siebert, Jovanovic?

      Delete
    6. I agree. If Makkelie is anticipated for a SF CL, then better to appoint him to MCI-RMA, to avoid that Kovacs is paired with MCI again after just 3 weeks…

In QF’s, committee “protected” Makkelie (the best ref at the moment together with Orsato) at all costs, by assigning him in the conference league… To use him for a SF game in Villareal? That would be a strange strategy. I don’t think so.

      Delete
    7. Maybe conference league was not protection but punishment for no-foul in RMA-PSG?

      Delete
  13. In my book a good first half of Osmers. The first YC seemed a bit harsh to me, the other two cautions were perfect. Also two very good play-ons, one in each penalty area. (43' potential handball of Salzburg, Osmers saw perfectly that it was the shoulder area; 45+2' GK of Benfica got all ball).

    1. Agree. Also a good 2nd half. Very good performance with a correct penalty whistled.

    2. I don't think Turpin is working next week.

      Delete
    3. Why not? :)
Björn Kuipers once officiated a cup final on Sunday evening, followed by a semi final CL on Wednesday. Isn’t a game on Sunday a normal prep for a game on Wednesday?
Moreover, the games on Saturday (in Ligue1) are not available for Turpin. He recently officiated Nantes and St Etienne.

      Delete
    4. We at least can exclude Makkelie for CL SFs since his AR1 has AVAR duty on sunday. Kuipers is observing in Madrid wednesday so that excludes Makkelie completely for the CL SFs as expected

    1. Why would the third one be a foul? Sometimes we need to use common sense.

It's an accident. The attacker is running away from goal fully and isn't a threat. The defender simply lands from his jump and happens to make contact with the trail leg of his opponent.

There's no careless action. There's not even a "challenge." What would the foul even be?

Not all contact and/or unfortunate result constitutes a foul. Good for Miguel and the VAR for recognizing this. Calling this a penalty would be a horrendous outcome.

  16. Normally we won’t see a SF referee in the final, however Clattenburg followed the same stages. I think after Siebert performance committee wants safe hands for the SF’s. It would be a big risk for Makkelie, meaning he has to do another good performance not too loose sight on the final. This shows again how limited the elite group is.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Makkelie should normally be out since Steegstra (his AR1) has AVAR duty this sunday during the Go ahead- vitesse match. IMO although Van Egmond has shown not to be that wise, i dont think he would send Steegstra on VAR duty 2 days before a CL SF given all the different options for AVAR in the eredivisie matches . That would be one of the most stupid things for Van Egmond to do, after making Kooij a new FIFA ref.....

    ReplyDelete
  18. @ Anonymous 05:20 - nonsense argument. He also worked as AVAR in the weekend before MIL-LIV earlier this season.

The Dutch crew in Villareal would suprise me though. Extremely low profile assignment in conference league should lead to a high profile game. VIL-LIV isn't.

Btw, Makkelie in Kuwait yesterday for a relegation game.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @ Günter: IMO a referee that handles a SF return can NEVER be in charge of the final. He 'indirectly' influenced the outcome of that match.

Having said that, I don't expect Makkelie in Villareal based on the observer (committee member). DM is very experienced and its not a big game on paper. Makes no sense to have Dallas in Villareal to observe the Dutch. The experienced Marciniak is also not observed by committee member. I rather expect a referee in Villareal that is handling a Semi final for the very first time.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I would expect Turpin and Vincic. Alternatives might be Kovacs for a second semi-final, Zwayer, Soares or, and I think this could be a serious option: Aytekin. He was praised for his performance is Praha, has shown to be a reliable referee and its a match that would suit him. I think we might see a German in VIL-LIV.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why not Siebert? He had some troubles in Madrid, too passive, but IMO Villareal-Liverpool would suit his style very well. Vincic also an option.

      Delete
    2. Two SF in a row is too much for everyone, it would be crazy for Kovacs.
Soares was replaced as 4th Official in MCI RMA, due to injury, so i think he is still out.
Aytekin and Zwayer… idk, if you want to pick a German, pick Siebert to give him some confidence.

I think we will see a surprise in Vilarreal (Jovanovic, Cakir)

    Conference League:

Leicester City - AS Roma: del Cerro Grande (4th: Gil Manzano)

    2. I’m starting to think that he might be recovered and assigned to the game in Madrid next week.

Turpin in Madrid is not impossible, but he is on Thursday in Leipzig (I guess by plane), on Sunday in Montpellier. On Wednesday in Madrid…? That’s a busy schedule. Also a game on Sunday is in the Knock-Out stages always a clue that a referee is not appointed in CL, as it doesn’t allow committee to make a last minute swap after the 1st legs.

On the other hand, Makkelie has a busy schedule as well. Last Friday in Eredivisie, last Monday in Kuwait, next Friday in Eredivisie again, to Villareal on Tuesday? Almost no time to work at the police ;) But I assume he just likes to whistle a lot. He has officiated so many games in 2021/2022… Wow. Nevertheless, a Friday game is usually a clue that a referee has international duty. VAR van Boekel is with G (hard name!) in England on Thursday and not appointed in Dutch league this weekend. Another clue.

Since Kuipers is the observer on in Madrid, I assume we can expect Orsato there. Or maybe Vincic? He has no game this weekend. Although my gut feeling says, Vincic is saved for the EL final.

    3. We can’t fully exclude the 4th officials for a semi final appointment. In QF’s, there were are few that worked as CR ánd 4th official:

      -José María Sánchez
      -Felix Zwayer
      -Srđan Jovanović
      -François Letexier

There are (2 x 6 =) 12 semi finals. So they need 24 Elites. Should be possible to avoid duplicate assignments though.

    4. Predictions

      Villareal-Liverpool: Cüneyt Cakir

      Rangers-Leipzig: Mateu Lahoz
      Frankfurt-Westham: Halil Umut Meler

      As Roma-Leicester: Srđan Jovanovic
      Marseille-Feyenoord: Felix Zwayer

    5. No info so far, we must wait tomorrow at 12:00 PM, when serie A appointments will be released (ion Thursday because today there are some very crucial games and Rocchi wanted to wait). We will see, in case of appointment for a game on Saturday, even serie B possible, then we could think about CL semifinal, but in normal conditions and in past years, committee would have never forced. If we will read his name, after having been out from the pitch since the end of March, it will be simply for emergency reasons.

  27. Very very hard to make predictions.

My safe bets for next week:

-Schärer - his performance in QF was praised
    -Jovanovic - yes please
-One or two Germans. Aytekin’s performance was praised, Zwayer’s performance wasn’t. Siebert, I really hope he has a game to re-gain some confidence after Atleti
-A second French (Letexier not appointed this week, neither as 4th official, so he has a game next week or is with Turpin in CL)
-A Spanish (Mateu Lahoz or Gil Manzano)

    Doubts:
-An Italian? (Orsato big question mark, Massa - ??)
-Vincic - 4th official in Liverpool, no game in domestic league. Yes, why not?
-Makkelie (?) - game on Friday
-A Turkish? Cakir after a long time or Meler after a performance below par? I’m in for a surprise

    ReplyDelete
  28. @usaref: Then it is a French ref in the final. Obviously a political choice and IMO undeserved. He has no semi final experience. Sth that almost ALL referees had this century before whistling a CL final. Maybe this is a compensation for the French football association after having no referees at the EURO 2020 KO-stages? For me it’s clear. Kuipers just had the EURO final, and therefore Makkelie is no choice in the grand final and is “burned” by Rosetti in the PSG game. :’)

    ReplyDelete
  29. If Makkelie doesn't have the CL final (for whatever reason): Why don't you give him the second-biggest match (Real-City), where it seems to be difficult to find a referee anyway.
I don't find an explanation for that. Unless some of his recent performances were assessed worse than we expect and/or his general standing with UEFA is not as high as most of us think.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @ Philipp: +1

If Turpin has the CL final, I don’t see a reason to hide Makkelie in conference league, and then appoint him to VIL-LIV. Worst strategy ever.

  31. Are we sure that Kuipers can’t observe a Dutchman?

If I remember correctly, Dallas once observed an English ref?

  32. I predict Makkelie on a SF CL and a play-off final in June
    He deserves CL final though

  33. About Kuwait:

    - Not only Makkelie has been there to handle games; so has Jovanović, Soares Dias, T. Martins, Bebek, Conger and finally Gomes for a cup final (not necessarily an exhaustive list), always with local linesmen helping them; unfortunately, unlike Saudi or UAE, the association there are very opaque when it comes to reporting referee appointments

    - I watched Jovanović's game [VAR: Bebek], and he did a good job in a basically normal difficulty match, with a consistent approach to disciplinary. In addition, the Serbian ref correctly awarded a penalty in the last minute of the match for a clear handling (textbook positioning):
    https://youtu.be/VYBz_HKsX-E?t=5791

    - I didn't watch Makkelie's game in full but I spotted three interesting penalty area incidents, all worthy of discussion I think, see below:

    2. Yes, I did too (you can see it from the video I linked to as well).

I am the first person to note that officiating in the Arab world can be extremely challenging (less eyes on it than, say, CL, but often much more difficult), but to be honest, it was extremely exaggerated to send Makkelie for this game. You can just ask Mads Kristoffersen how tough SOME games there can become, but despite this being an important relegation clash, the football level was very weak and a UEFA Elite referee (not least Makkelie), was hardly required for it.

      Delete
    3. Thank you! Amazing job. Hard to find these videos when the titles are in Arabic.

I really like Jovanovic’ and Makkelie’ their styles.
      Regarding Jovanovic, clear penalty.
Regarding Makkelie, I think situation 1 and 2 are pretty clear, situation 3 leaves room for discussion. Need a better camera angle.

Almost strange to see Makkelie so relaxed and smiling so much (in the beginning of the video). I always find him so serious when he officiates. He looks like a very nice and friendly guy in here.

    1. I don’t expect two Romanian referees attending the WC. Simply impossible if you ask me. And Kovacs is better than Hategan.

      Delete
    2. The president did not said that Hategan is ready to come back, only the press understood that! Hategan wants to return (meaning not to end his career, unknown when) and he is in permanent contact with Vassaras. He is waited to come back as soon as he will be fit.
Kovacs was congratulated by the president for his performance yesterday in the UCL semifinal. Media in Romania is in ecstasy, this great performance was a very important moment for us yesterday. Many praises by everybody.
Of course, 2 referees at WC is very, very unlikely. It is obviously a declaration for the press, good for his image, so people will like him more - he does not enjoy too much appreciation for now.

      Delete
  36. Thanks. I disagree about Makkelie's incidents, I think it is quite possible to imagine a different decision in each scene!

44' - You could argue simulation by the attacker, trawling his legs to be clipped after running the ball too far. Not for me though, clear penalty to be given (more Al-Ghamdi's MEXFRA than SUICHI for WC2010 experts :)).

65' - I understand that you have to get DOGSO+(+) in order to reach a sending off nowadays, but how is this not a deliberate last-man foul and hence red card? :D. The attacker is alone with an open goal and only runs wide to try and break free from the very blatant holding. I don't really blame Makkelie for giving a YC, this is the 'spirit' of what they are taught, but still...

68' - Very good, even excellently seen, play on for me, after attacker tries to win a penalty by putting his legs where it would generate contact with the defender. However, can also understand the view that defender's actions are too clumsy / careless and hence a penalty should be awarded anyway.

About appointment predictions: to be honest, I am not very good at them, so I leave that to others who are simply better at making those educated guesses than me!

  37. Mikael is refereeing by the book, without football understanding :-) Football doesn’t ask for book referees, they want referees who had feeling for the game.

Please read carefully what I wrote - "not (simulation) for me though, clear penalty to be given".

    1. Dear Mohamed, if Makkelie has a SF CL, do you think he will still get the final? Most of the times your predictions comes true.

  41. ‪@Mikael. Big thanks for these videos!
I just watched the KMI’s and I tend to agree with your comments. ‬

‪Off-topic: fun fact, a Dutch friend of mine is interested in ‬genealogy, and ‪told me that the name ‘Makkelie’ is not common in the Netherlands and actually from Scottish origin. Apparently all Dutch names starting with ‘Mak’ are from Scottish origin (‘Mac’). For example the name of former attacker ‘Makaay’ is a phonetically adaptation of the Scottish name MacKay. The BBC are always pronouncing his name as ‘MacKelly’. I bet that could be pretty close to the original name. ‬

‪*Sorry for the off-topic. I found it too funny to not mention it :) ‬

    1. Well in that case it would be nice to see Makkelie in Scotland - Oekraïne for the last WC ticket :-)

    2. What is the correct pronunciation in Dutch of Makkelie?

    3. Hehe :D I prefer a Scotland-Wales clash.
Without joking, no issues of course. I assume this name was introduced/adapted a few centuries ago

    6. Danny Desmond Makkelie, the son of a Dutch Royal Marine Soldier, was born on Curaçao an island in the southern Caribbean Sea. His second name “Desmond” is a typically Antillen name and he’s called a Makamba (white man) by his black country people.
