  1. Congratulations to Serdar and Benoit with the appointments for the semi=finals.

  2. Acoording to the Spanish CTA, Carlos del Cerro is the referee of the UECL Semifinal between Roma and Leicester with Gil Manzano as fourth official.

  3. Bastien is a small surprise at this stage after not being used in CL KO stage. So he still seems to be the French number 2, unless Letexier gets Frankfurt - West Ham, of course.

Gözübüyük is an expectable appointment, I think.

A very interesting question is, whether the fourth officials from this week are excluded from refereeing next week. If yes, this would give a lot of hints...

    1. Totally agree. Taylor, Turpin, Vincic and Gil Manzano still in a race for final 3 matches.

  4. And makkelie in a race with them

  5. Well, if Turpin gets the CL final it is political bullocks(!).

Makkelie AND Marciniak are way more experienced than Turpin in high profile matches.

If Makkelie doens't get the final, it is a political choice OR mr. Al-Khelaifi is the one to blame.

  6. What a season for Gozubuyuk. For a long time he struggled in First Group and a lot of people doubted his capabilities. From last season he showed why the committee kept faith in him. This season: 3 UCL Group Stage, UEL R16, UECL QF, UCL QF, UEL SF. Well done by the Dutchman and his team!

    1. Serdar Gozubuyuk: years and years of struggling in Category 1, no option for Elite, then suddenly a golden year. This means that if you put trust in a referee, in long term, sooner or later, he will do that. So why not the same treatment for all referees? Let's remember how many chances got the Dutch before this season? Is that fair?

  7. Why Turpin as 4th official ?

    1. Because they are saving him for either the champions league SF leg 2 or the final!

  8. Differently from Gözübüyük I don't see particular reasons for Bastien to deserve a semifinal appointment, but it is also true that one must consider him as France nr. 2, still ahead of Letexier in terms of experience, and preselected for WC. He is used as "standard referee", but he doesn't give me any particular impression.
For Gözübüyük, as somebody wrote above, the best season so far, he justified the promotion to Elite after a very long time in Category 1.

  9. OT finally UEFA fixed in their database the name of Willy Delajod, always and wrongly reported as Delajod Willy :) Glad for him!

  10. My reading is that Makkelie won’t have the CL final this year. Why? Because he is Dutch.

As often written on this blog, UEFA and FIFA are politically minded. The CL final is often “used” as preparation for the upcoming WC & Euro final.

    *Examples: Merk (2003>2004), Webb (2010), Proenca (2012), Rizzoli (2013>2014) and Clattenburg (2016).

Most referees in the Euro/WC finals had a CL final experience.

Just have a quick look at the referees nationality at the EC/WC finals this century:

-Euro 2020: Sweden. WC 2002: Italy. Euro 2004: Germany. WC 2006: Argentina. Euro 2008: Italy. WC 2010: England. Euro 2012: Portugal. WC 2014: Italy. Euro 2016: England. WC 2018: Argentina. Euro 2020: Netherlands. WC 2022: …?

Based on this ‘unwritten’ rule, it is impossible that the Netherlands will have a referee in the WC 2022 finals, neither at the Euro 2024. I think, the first opportunity for Makkelie will be in 2026.
My expectation is that UEFA will appoint a different referee for the CL final 2022. This referee will be prepared to compete with (for example) Orsato at the WC 2022 to reach the finals.

I hope I'm wrong though, and let me clear, I terrible hate(!) such political decisions. Makkelie is IMO the best and most versatile referee at the moment (together with Orsato). Had a great steady season. Capable to officiate the most complicated and hot clashes. Always respected, always in control.

However I’m afraid that Makkelie is just reeaaaally unlucky that his compatriot just had the Euro final. :/ :/ :/

    2. You have some good point, but let me show you some stats. These are UCL Final referees’ paths in last 10 years:

      6 Mateu 2021: 4 GS, QF, F
      6 Orsato 2020: 4 GS, R16, F
      5 Skomina 2019: 2 GS, R16(1&2nd leg), F
      5 Mazic 2018: 4 GS, F
      5 Brych 2017: 3 GS, R16, F
      6 Clattenburg 2016: 3 GS, R16, SF, F
      4 Cakir 2015: 2 GS, R16, F
      4 Kuipers 2014: 2 GS, R16, F
      5 Rizzoli 2013: 3 GS, R16, F
      5 Proença 2012: 3 GS, R16, F

It’s uncommon to see Final refs to officiate more than one KO match, and they never have more than 6 games.

Makkelie is now at 5 games
      (4 GS, R16, … )
      Other candidates:
      Turpin 6 games (4 GS, R16, QF, …)
      Marciniak 8 games (4 GS, R16(1), R16(2), QF, SF)

The only chance to NOT see the Dutch in Paris is a RMA-VIL Final , in that case Taylor could be a serious contender.

    3. This is the most annoying thing I have ever read!! UEFA has simply chosen their referee for the final in Makkelie and you are worrying about the future. The present needs to be attended too and Makkelie is that person, Lahoz can go to the World Cup and join Orsato in your list but as Kuipers was already stamped as the euro’s referee for the final, all my money is on Makkelie, there is regally no other choice. He is the most experienced of all the referees present in elite and most deserving!! End of story.

      Delete
    4. If this is true, i don't understand the appointment strategy.

Why protecting Makkelie in the QF's at all costs, if he is not anticipated for a final, and using Siebert with Atletico Madrid? That's weird.

This only makes sense if Makkelie will officiate a high profile SF CL. Maybe Real - Man.City?

      Delete
    5. Makkelie cannot officiate Real City, because Kuipers is Ref Observer for that game

      Delete
    6. Well, if they kept Makkelie in the shadow for VIL-LIV, I really don't understand committee's strategy.

At the same time, they are re-using Kovacs with Man City again, whilst Makkelie is the more logical 'experienced' choice (if he doesn't get the final...)

      Delete
    7. Maybe Orsato is available next week

      Delete
    8. Makkelie will be in charge of Villarreal - Liverpool next week.

  11. Turpin in the CL final? Hell no. I hope not.
In the CHE-RMA game, he interrupted a Chelsea attack because a Real player had a cramp. The same player was able to run again after a minute break. Referees were asked to PROTECT the game?! The French is fooled too easily, for my taste and whistles more small contacts than Marciniak or Makkelie. Come on. The final requires a strong personality

    1. Thank you Mikael and Chefren. Iván Barton had a good match in the middle of the CONCACAF Champions League Final first leg. Very good discussion with VAR team in all three OFRs. FOX Sports commentary team had an ex-FIFA referee/instructor on the panel and he was giving high praise to the Barton for all three OFRs. Barton has a good chance at going to Qatar for CONCACAF.

    2. I see a different use of VAR in CONCACAF, if compared to other confederations. I wouldn't have expected an intervention, at least talking about OFR, in all three cases. First one: infringment by keeper should be directly spotted by VAR without the need of OFR. Second penalty: for me never clear and obvious mistake before the penalty whistle, the previous possible foul by attacker should have been whistled only directly by Barton, he missed it indeed, but no VAR stuff, at least for me, impossible to question about intensity. Third penalty: for me not a 100% clear situation, first argument is the long time they needed to check it, then I think a closer replay from a better position (goal line) is missing, this would have helped in understanding more the intensity of the contact. Yes, it can be absolutely foul and maybe penalty better decision, but still to me not a clear and obvious mistake. In a more general comment about all three situations, I would say that in this game, maybe because it was CL final, VAR was used without limits and for all possible infringments, to have everything clear until final whistle.. in our (European) ideas, this should be different...

      Delete
    3. VictoriaGooner, if you are referring to Machnik, he is a former match inspector. During the OFR for the second penalty he said on FoxSports "clear attacking foul", so not sure how that could be praise for Barton?

      Delete
    4. In CONCACAF, the bar seems to be have lowered some with respect to using VAR without limits. This has been the policy Concacaf VAR has been used for CCL and WCQ through 2022 watching both competitions this year. Depending on the stadium, some of the VAR cameras were not installed in the best locations, like Pumas' high behind the goal where the third OFR was used the most in determining he contact in the box.

I know speaking to some people within CONCACAF officiating world, they are planning on fine tuning the VAR process ahead of this summer's continental competitions and next year's Gold Cup.

      Delete
    5. @VictoriaGooner: I'm not convinced about your statement.
If Barton were to lead the matches at the World Cup in this way, we would always have matches of 100 to 105 minutes.
And that is precisely what FIFA does not want.
It's first to the referee to spot the law infringments. His body authority didn't convinced me at all.
Apart of the third case which is for me a 'question mark', both other final decisions were correct.

  14. A suggestion for blog administrators:

What do you think on putting UEL and UECL appointments, particularly those from late KO stages (QFs & SFs, I think until Round of 16 every competition should have its own post) together in one single post? Matches in both competitions are played at the same time (Thursday evening) and IIRC last time there were some 'unwittingly offtopic' comments of e.g. people commenting UECL performances in UEL appointments post, etc.

    1. Thanks for this suggestion, I understand the point of view but personally I think it would be unfair because we are talking about two different competitions and I prefer to have different topics also because there can be many comments and for this reason space issues, as it often happens for blogspot.

    2. Deleted the following anonymous comment for adding no value and seeming just like a vindictive attack - I think the right approach to such (lack of) contributions(?), even if the line can be thinner on other occasions:

      "Gözübüyük has got the experience.
What he lacks is the understanding that the teams are trying to play football, not ballet. Experience he has.
Plus of course the obvious YCs against WHU. A very one-sided affair sadly."

  19. The policy regarding removal of comments is beginning to be very random. If you start deleting all comments “adding no value” you’ll have to be consistent. In the past worse comments kept standing, while “seemingly” just a vindictive towards other referees as this deleted comment.

      Delete
    2. Maybe you can elaborate Anonymous 22:54, why exaggerated? I saw 2 fouls by WH which could/should have been YC’s. Within 2 minutes after the 2nd situation 2 fouls by EF (which can, but not must be YC’s) which were sanctioned with YC’s. For me that’s not examplary for keeping a sensible balance between both of the teams.

    4. His disciplinary was too reactive.

Warning to Antonio (23mins) was fine in the end, but he had to caution Rice (78mins) after advantage, it would have also calmed the game down at a hotter moment. Sow's booking a minute later was mandatory/expected and came at a good moment for the Dutch ref, but Hinteregger's foul (81mins) was definitely not more than careless, and he was cautioned because Gözübüyuk needed to calm the game down (if he had cautioned Rice, there would have been no need!). Dawson's reckless striking (90+mins) was a missed incident. Also, I had the feeling that the 'not-kicking-the-ball-out' scene rather overtook him a bit.

I mean, it all worked out okay in the end, but it wasn't the most tactically proficient performance by any means (with ENG/GER teams, fine, with others...). It all comes back to this point I touched on below - Gözübüyük never seems secure in what he sees on the FoP!

      Delete
    5. A very inconsistent and one-sided performance by Gözübüyük in an easy game.
Missed 2-3 clear YCs against WHU, gave a questionable one on EF (Hinteregger), called a foul where there was hardly any contact that led to WHU's 1-1, gave 3 incorrect throw-ins on both sides (one of them abundantly clearly wrong where he failed to overrule the AR1 who was 30m away).

Compared to the likes of Jovanovic and Soares Dias, his performance fell short.

I trust this comment adds value.

  24. A very PL/BL-type semifinal for Gözübüyük tonight, great atmosphere generated by both home and away fans, very football-focused and fair attitude of the players. The Dutchman performed okay in the end, but definitely not more.

More than individual decisions, the big problem with Gözübüyük's refereeing is that he doesn't really seem to trust his own perception of incidents. It is like instead of viewing the incidents through 1080HD60fps on the pitch, the Dutchman is on sth like 360/480pxl streams. His hesitancy in even basic calls (see three clearly wrong throw-in calls tonight), and disciplinary control, seems to all stem from doubt in how he is perceiving what happens in front of him.

To be clear, he did fine tonight, no big controversies, delivered the game, etcetera. But, and I want to say this with all respect: if Gözübüyük really developed from the 1st Cat official who couldn't really make the jump to Elite, to this ref whom UEFA now trust to handle CL QFs and EL SFs this season, then I definitely missed that improvement myself.

  25. Gözübüyük's performance is absolutely fine ! My opinion !

  26. I haven't seen the WHU-FRA match, but as a Dutchman I can fully agree on the main feedback's for Gozubuyuk.
Its typical for him. In Dutch league, he can be inconsequent and hesitating, or looking worried when he has to make decisions, issuing delayed yellow cards, etc. He did whistly only 13 fouls and that's in line with UEFA 2022 style though ;)

I watched the Liverpool game (QF CL) and in general, I noticed that Gozubuyuk is often paired with English teams. The English style (fluent, fast pace and almost no fouls) suits him very well. Better than the Dutch football, I must say. Just 22 players focused on playing football. It allows him to be on the background, being the isolated man, just focused on taking decisions. I think he will definitely struggle in the typical 'foul games' or when players try to influence him.

In Dutch league, it was Makkelie in charge of all hot ("violent") derby's, el Classico and the cup final, and I totally understand that. For some reason, he is always on his best in hot clashes. Looking at the appointments in general, this committee obiously has a few go-to choices when games are potentially problematic. Orsato, Marciniak and Makkelie are the first ones that come to mind.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is exactly why Makkelie deserves the final - being at his best when cirumstances and hot & tensed - but I'm afraid it will a French party. Based on the domestic league appointments, it's clear.

      Delete
    2. Rosetti Will make a fool of himself when he doesnt at least give Makkelie RMA-MCI in case of a non final (which would be the case cause Kuipers is observing) IMO its very clear that Turpin has to wait and he will be the one observeren by Kuipers. And rightly so. Makkelie in this form IMO even should get the WC final if it was played right now (its months ahead but Just saying) Im not seeing anyone near his level atm

      Delete
    3. @ Anonymous 08:09 - Unfortunately I have to disagree. Turpin has a match on Sunday and usually, a referee is never appointed on Sunday when he has a CL SF assignment. IMO it's too early for him.

      Delete
    4. It’s called favoritism, or lobby-ism. Whatever you like. The performance of a referee isn’t the most important thing nowadays.

At EURO 2020, it was one big Dutch party. A NL ref in the SF, a NL ref in the final. UEFA and their ‘political minded’ board will never allow another Dutch in a “grand final” in such a short time.
Bjorn Kuipers was already “chosen” as the EURO 2020 final referee before the tournament even started. We know Rosetti’s love for him and his low-profile / not-too-problematic appointments are telling the full story. On the other hand, his compatriot Makkelie was never really anticipated for a semi-final. He was subject to high profile assignments: the opening game, GER-ENG at Wembley, and a potentially problematic RUS-FIN (neighbours with history). We know what happened. Makkelie succeeded in these matches – or at least stayed away from controversy and headlines. In the end, the most important detail: no Spanish/English/Italian refs available at the semi finals and Cakir was sent home. Makkelie had to be appointed to the SF; no other ‘trusted’ options available.

Turpin officiated the 2020 EL final and at the EURO 2020, he was anticipated for something ‘big’ in the knock-outs as well. WAL-SWI and RUS-DEN are not assignments that really ‘stand out’, so they obviously wanted to keep him clean, but he was sent home after the 2nd match.
I dare to state that Turpin was also anticipated for the 2020 EL final. His appointments were pretty “safe”, and he already handled a SF in 2018 (Makkelie’s first SF was in 2019) and the Kuipers just had the EL final in 2018, but Turpin ruined it with a phantom penalty in the QF, and then the focus moved to Makkelie. If the is now appointed to the CL final – without ever officiating a CL semi-final – it is obviously a political choice. And bad management by the committee for sure!

Honestly, I really dislike it when referees are kept under the radar for a big final. Referees that can officiate the most tough, complicated matches DESERVE to be rewarded. Now it seems that the committee always tries to destroy great referee that are not in the running for a final by appointing them in the most challenging matches. My opinion.

  27. OT question to the real experts here:

Was Collina's appointment strategy (in general) very different from Rosetti's?

    ReplyDelete
  28. At Euro2020, Brych and Mateu Lahoz were also great options for the final, but Rosetti used them in very challenging games. Kuipers wasn't.

I think Collina has a different strategy. In 2018 he appointed Pitana to the opener and (on paper) a challenging QF !! For him the performance is more important !

    ReplyDelete
  29. I always thought that a referee must be very glad, very proud and very trusted when being appointed to challenging games or a high profile games...

And that a great performance in a complicated match should always be rewarded...

However, under Rosetti, a referee should be dissapointed when appointed to challenging games in early stages of the tournament (final chances reduced to a minimum)... while other refs can be very happy with typical fair games and all appointments 'under the radar'...

    What a joke.

    2. Based on domestic appointments, its pretty clear that Orsato will be in Madrid and Makkelie in Villareal.

IMO it is ridiculous that Makkelie, after his masterclass in RMA-PSG was appointed to a QF conference league, to get the 'weakest' out of 4 semi's. I assume he has the play-off final (A) on 5 June though.

  31. “EGOS”

I hope egos don't get the predominance. Kuipers was 41 years old when he whistled the UCL final. If he wants to remain the youngest Dutchman we won't see Makkelie in the final for at least the next 3 years. In fact, if Kuipers wants to remain the only Dutch referee in a Euro final, then Makkelie can forget about that final. He will have to focus his hopes on Collina in FIFA. It would be ridiculous that personal interests can affect careers of referees, especially fellow countrymen.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think its an Ego thing. Rather politics.

After Kuipers reached the EURO final 2020, you can already predict that his compatriot Makkelie is not a candidate for WC 2022 final, neither for the EURO 2024. His first opportunity is WC 2026 (at the age of 43). I bet his CL final also will be postponed until 2025 or 2026.

      Delete
    2. I don’t think that finals in UEFA affects chances in FIFA. Totally different competition. Besides that its my impression Collina won’t be guided by decisions made by Rosetti.

    3. They never repeat the same nationality in the WC/EC finals though, in such a short period. There is always 6 years in between (even for Italians! :).

UEFA obviously changed course - Makkelie, IMO the best referee of the season, is not the preferred option after Kuipers just had the EURO final.

My reading is that UEFA is obviously trying (and pushing!) to prepare the French for the WC final in Qatar - this year attending the Club World Cup, followed by a CL final, besides the fact that he never officiated a semi final CL and just had the EL final just one year ago.

Very strange management by the committee. Politics at its best.

    5. Surely if UEFA were to "prepare a referee for the WC final", they wouldn't choose a referee from the country that won the previous World Cup and has arguably the strongest group of players though, would they?

    2. Why not? You can write and answer yourself as anonymous. Many people do that here.

    1. Apparently nobody watched him....
German magazine kicker rates him with a 2(good), which roughly translates to a 8,4-8,5.
Not always the biggest experts, but probably netter than nothing.

    2. To compare: Gözübüyuk with a 5(deficient).
"No line in foul detection, many small errors, wrong free kick before the 2-1"
      So basically a 7.8.
