  1. An excellent appointment for srdjan Serbia

  2. Some interesting choices:

    - Glenn Nyberg, a very good referee with elite skills but before the final promotion, sent to roughly playing KAZ vs Čeferin's SVN that will try to fight for promotion with DEN and FIN. Important Karen Nalbandyan will observe him. The Swede will have to be very focused in this game but fortunately he has the skills to handle such difficult games.

    - Srđan Jovanović trusted by UEFA to handle ITAENG, not only a prestigious but also very important game given that there is also Ukraine in group C. While I don't deem the Serb a strong manager, UEFA is of a different opinion and give him another big game, this time with important Frank De Bleeckere as observer.

    - Daniel Siebert given a top Scandinavian clash in Group H. A similar speech like in Jovanović' case - theoretically two best teams of the group but Slovenia will most likely fight for advance as well. Not so big observer for the German though.

    - Donatas Rumšas with a tight and important game of Group J. It's going to be a nice fight for the second place in this group - POR will most likely finish 1st but then we have BIH, ISL, SVK.

    - Tohver, Bogár, Eskås and Obrenovič with remaining, less significant games.

    1. Indeed a very good appointment for Rumsas after not getting much in the club competitions.
And Jovanovic's appointment should confirm, that he has the chance for a CL QF as well as for one of the finals.

  3. Do we know already, whether there will be VAR in this competition?

    1. Yes, I think the appointments will be published two days before, differently from referees (3 days before), as it was for the last WC qualifiers, if I'm not wrong.

      Delete
    2. For the last EURO qualifiers, there wasn't VAR.
But indeed it is likely to be the same as in WC qualifiers as the pool of potential VARs has increased in the last 4 years.

      Delete
    3. Indeed I was wrong, this already happened in Nations League appointments (not from the beginning, though).

  4. OT :

    Surprised there was no comments about De Burgos' performance in El Clasico. Here is my opinion;

Very mediocre, too much inconsistency, if Real had players like Pepe, Ramos and Casemiro like in the past, then he eould have lost the game completely.

In the opening minutrs clear bookable offence to Roberto, he choose to let him go.
Then some moments later Nacho makes YC foul and this time he gave it.
Gavi had plenty fouls, how he ecaped without booking is ridicoulous.
No clear mistakes, but referee who has no consitency and no charisma at all.

Now next Clasico is within month, maybe Sanchez or even Lahoz could handle it imo

    3. I am more with borja. "No Charisma" ist so wrong in my opinion. His decisions were Well accepted by the players because of his good communication.
There ist a reason why they chosed him as la liga referee of the year 2022 in front of CDG, lahoz, martinez, manzano and so on

  5. About the yesterday poor Dabanovic 's oerformance n AEK-PANATHINAIKOS.

In 99' he has given penalty and after communication with VAR (probably, we don't know), he changed his mind without checking the VAR (!!!) and he gives offensive foul. The joke is that the explanation he gave at AEK's players is that he never gave penalty!!! Unbelievable!

    The controversial penalty at 99'

Also a controversial penalty at 1st half, which not given for a Hajisafi's handball

I would read your opinion and your comments about that!
Greetings from Greece to the best page fore referees!

    1. It can be a communication with AR and FO also. Anyway, I would say that the final decision is correct, calling a foul for a previous incident.

      Delete
    2. If you have to whistle a foul, this is clearly in favor of defender, so at the end correct decision. Yellow player suffered an injury but it was him to arrive later on the scene. About the decision making process: referee could have been easily deceived by assessing it, we should think about two "legal" options: either changing idea my himself (very rare) or an advice by a teammate, AR or FO. Nevertheless, this is very gard to believe, given the position of the incident. If he changed idea after VAR discussion, that's clearly a violation, if not sure before, he shouldn't have made signals.

The penalty for handball a very clear one, at least in Italy, but definitly impossible to see for referee live, VAR stuff.

  6. High reputation for Jovanović by committee, I must say that after his promotion to Elite he has convinced to gain more credit. In the very recent times maybe he has shown some weak performances but in the overall context says that he deserved what he achieved. Very nonchalant style by the Serbian, sometimes you think he is there and that should be already enough to avoid incidents. It is a referee with an important skill: being always cool. I think, first of all, committee noticed that. Technically, maybe not at the level of the other well-known big Elite names, but he's in a very good path.
With De Bleeckere observer in Italy - England, one could have easily guessed either him or Schaerer for this big match. The Swiss seems to be on a similar level of good consideration by committee, but clearly less than the Serbian. (that's of course my opinion).
Philipp is right when he writes that we could see him in CL QFs, maybe the only "different name" if we assume that there will be all the Top Elite we know.
About the rest of appointments: the development of Nyberg continues with a foul that one can predict full of fouls, and he will have to be aware of that. Not the ideal assignment for a referee trying to reach Elite, but I read this choice as test for the Swedish, with a special advice by committee to be always ready to change approach in case of need. We will see.
Below expectations games for Eskås, while I think standard for Obrenovič and Tohver. Given the experience of the latter one could say still disappointing for him, but I came to conclusion that committee now realized which games are for him and he will not make progress, just being very satisfied of officiating at that level.
The appointment of Rumšas is very good: indeed we must say that he was very often out from assignments in recent times, without known reasons, maybe he was not avaliable. I expected something good for him, now he got it. Bosnia and Iceland two teams that attended big tournament and with a certain pedigree, but still not a very top clash, you can easily understand what committee found in this game, perfect for the Lithuanian.
Normal appointment for Bogár in San Marino, we remember when Collina sent Brych to Serravalle :D this will not happen again.
Then, Siebert: very clear choice by committee, Nordic "derby" and on paper a classic game in which you see an Elite but not one of the very top. Unknown whether this is a test for getting something more after, but most important thing to underline is that committee has now understood that the German needs to officiate "calm games", at least on paper.

  7. Slovak FIFA referee Martin Dohál banned for 6 games and then relegated to the 3rd league for this mistake: https://twitter.com/FutZakulisie/status/1635009413760323584?cxt=HHwWgMDU-cWZ3LAtAAAA
He blew the whistle too early and therefore VAR Filip Glova could not intervene.

  8. Mitrovic charged with Voilent and improper conduct for the incident with Chris Kavanagh yesterday. Nice long ban and maybe get him to do some work with referees. Same with Marco silva however abusive language rather then voilent conduct.

  9. Just wondering, can anyone tell me why Jovanovic gets all these big appointments. In all his matches, I never once seen him do something of which I thought, now this is a top level referee. Not management wise and certainly not foul detection wise. He is just wrong so many times. But please, tell me what I'm constantly missing!

    1. That's your opinion, and of course one must respect it, but I think that if you really want to understand why he got this reputation by committee, you must look back at ALL his games starting from before his promotion to Elite. He showed in my opinion some very good performances, and one can say that he has certain skills, especially in terms of firmness. Then, maybe he is not the best referee in the world, but he managed to get a certain trust, coming also from a very neutral country at top level (easy to appoint him in almost all games), and that's another factor but of course just a minor one. You see him as you described, but if you keep on this view, youi will not see why committee sees him differently... for me he is a quite good referee with a possible very important development.

    2. I agree, they try to create another Mažić but he is a long way off that standard. Also I don't understand why he is always getting important matches in Italy, Roma vs Leicester, Inter vs Porto now a very important NT match. Leiceter and Porto were not too happy with his performance in those matches to put it mildly.

    3. Marko23, anty75 - why the hatred towards one of the best UEFA referees at the moment!?!?

      Delete
    4. Hatred is not the right word, I just think he is good but not that good. The problem is not him but his overpromotion

    5. Hello.
I would not necessarily compare Jovanovic and Mazic at this moment.
First, Jovanovic is only halfway (at least) in his career as an Elite referee.
Second, they are diametrically opposed in terms of "type of judge":
Athleticism, relationship with players on the field, management, assertiveness, character, temperament, the way they present themselves on the field... They also have totally different refereeing style.
In this momment, we can possibly compare what Mažić was like in the middle of his career compared to what Srdjan is like now. A completely different pair of sleeves is the one whose refereeing style we like better and which is closer to our concept of a top referee and a top refereed game.
We will have to wait another 8-9 years to judge who achieved more success as an Elite referee.
In the end, it is a huge success that a small country like Serbia has two elite UEFA referees who enjoy the huge trust of the refereeing commission. I also believe that there are more names in Serbia that we will see on the big stage in the future...

      Best regards.

  10. An unfortunate situation arose yesterday in soccer in my country, Costa Rica.

San Carlos and LD Alajuelense were facing each other, when FIFA referee David Gomez did not sanction a very obvious penalty for San Carlos.
Given this, the assistant (also FIFA) raises the flag and sanctions the penalty, to which the referee ignores, returns and argues strongly with his assistant and they almost come to blows...

Let's see if I can find the video and put it here.

Today it was reported that the 2 will be suspended for the local tournament and for the Concacaf tournaments.

This is not new in the Costa Rican refereeing, a conversation was recently leaked where several referees (including Gomez) talk about the situations that arise against Saprissa, it may even imply a "plot" against the club.

In addition, Keylor Herrera (FIFA referee) filed a complaint saying that several colleagues indicate that he is in charge of filtering the conversation

The issue of refereeing in Costa Rica is terrible

  11. What's the situation of VAR in Northern Europe / Scandinavia? Will we see VAR's from (for example) Sweden, Denmark or Norway anytime soon? I feel like it's the only region of Europe that still relies on other VAR's right now

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Very weird that UEFA doesn't trust Danish VARs considering they have used it since 2020. Norway is introducing it in the coming season (they play April-December) and in Sweden there is a big opposition to introducing it, with nearly every club having annual meeting motions passed to work against it. The decision is not in the clubs' hands though as it is in many other leagues, and the federation can introduce it with every club being against it, but I don't think that is likely to happen, at least not right now

  12. Yeah, Nyberg was very good, surely will be promoted soon.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think both Nyberg and Ekberg deserve to be promoted to elite. I'm happy to hear that Nyberg continues with great performances as I observed him in Lazio - AZ and it was masterclass by him. He should be not only elite but also a top elite given his skills. I will watch KAZSVN later and cut highlights from this game.

  16. Good advantage played before the Italy goal

  17. I must admit very poor officiating by Jovanovic in this game, delayed cards, very often not clear who was booked during the game, allowing players to make all protests. He must change his style to achieve something more.

  18. Logical consequence of waayyy too insecure performance by Jovanović... everyone can have a bad day, but honestly this is more 'a feature not a bug' for the Serbian (too choatic foul recognition, no significant personality skills -> Kulbakou 'flow-based' approach).

Rosetti's vision of trying to create a star ONLY by appointments, not by skills, bares the natural fruit too.

  19. I can report a good performance by Donatas Rumšas in the important BIHISL. The game wasn't so challenging overall but some hot moments occured. The Lithuanian was alert and due to quick and firm reactions there were no bigger conflicts. Well done!

  20. I do not remember if it was Chefren or someone else who used to post video clips from some situations with yellow or red cards.

I would need now huge help if someone could send mi a clip from game Slovakia-Luxembourg when referee Obradovic gives in minute 93 yellow card to Luxembourg player L.Jans.

I need it for protocol to see if this card was before or after final whistle .

    UEFA says before.

    2. WOW first legs will be definitely something to be watched.
About the timing, if they have planned Jovanovic for a game, and this is possible, I think they didn't wait for yesterday's game... let's wait for knowing. At moment after Italy - England, appointing him for a CL Quarterfinal seems unlikely due to his form. In second legs, based on observers, we could see all the big Elite.
